Update to my review: after finally getting a hold of the manager Rebecca Issa two days after we…read morearrived home, like in other reviews, she attacked us and accused us of harassing her and abusing her. Rebecca's, as it turns out, is in total denial and can't accept constructive feedback. She immediately started yelling and screaming at us on the phone and made excuses for everything that was wrong with the room. She claimed to work 60-80 hours per week but if that were the case, there wouldn't be multiple reports of blood on walls and sheets in the reviews of this hotel. In the end, after she screamed at us for 7 minutes, she hung up on us. The owner hides behind the internet and is basically unreachable. You can learn about him and his connections on ChatGPT however. It seems he also owns a hotel revenue pricing software that is in use here and so it makes their pricing suspicious to me. I've also left reviews on Google, but they keep taking them down. The bottom line: this place is filthy, the management is incompetent and has no customer service capabilities and if you stay here, you will likely regret it!

Because of the age of the building (which is very charming!) shower steam can set off the fire alarms & apparently one of the guest came in late & decided to shower without using their fan. Luckily it went off after 20 seconds, but it was quite a startling way to be woken up. We would definitely go back.

The hotel is definitely older but extremely clean which is super important to me but it shows some wear and tear. It's a good value because it's fairly close to the beach and Boardwalk. During the first part of our trip we stayed in the single story motel type in located near the office. I think we were in room 110 and unfortunately there was a lot of noise outside our window worsening each night and our air conditioner was on life-support so we left our window open. This made it a little bit difficult for sleeping. The room and bathroom are a decent size and there's a small refrigerator, (smaller) microwave, dresser drawers, a Keurig, TV and a full length mirror along with I believe an ironing board. It's also located right next to an extra mile gas station which has a lot of items. There were a few things that were not in working order when we arrived and we tried to live with them. When we reported the light was out in the bathroom they came and fixed it immediately. Unfortunately we couldn't get the Keurig to work (no power) because it was plugged in behind the dresser so my friend went down to the office and they moved us across the street to the nicer Continental Inn. We did not know but this building is where the pool is located. This was a much nicer room and I did a video that I will post. There were some better things about the first room and better things about the second room but the second room had a great air conditioner and windows down both sides of the room so a nicer aesthetic and we had a very quiet nights sleep for the rest of our stay. The new room across the street had covered parking where the one near the office you parked in front of your unit. The one across the street had an elevator and was very secure and the original hotel was right by the office so both are secure. The 2nd room across the street also came with the same amenities including a full length mirror and I remember this one had an iron and ironing board. The people that run the motel are super, super, super nice and they try very hard to make it a nice stay. Even though we experienced some problems, I would stay there again. One thing to note the pillows are terrible (I think because they wash them) so bring your own pillow! We went to Ross and bought a pillow.

They had plenty of space where it looked like they used to provide some sort of amenities like breakfast or at least coffee, but all of that was closed and empty. The only thing in that area was a table with snacks for sale and even that was not very well set up. Our first room had an overwhelming chemical smell. It smelled like the cleaner they used to clean bathrooms. Fortunately, the staff was able to give us another slightly better room. There was only one small rolling chair. We had trouble with the remote control and went to the reception area to talk to someone at the desk. They said they would be up in a little while, but after an hour we wound up having to leave for dinner. We suggested when we went down there that it was probably a battery that needed to be replaced. Rather than take the time to check that out, he said he had other people he had to take care of first and would come to our room, but as far as I know he never did. The next morning we called, and they said someone would be right up. Again, no one came right up. We waited for 15 minutes, and no one showed. We called again, and finally someone arrived in a few minutes. He pushed the buttons a couple of times and looked at me like I was crazy or stupid, because they seemed to work. I told him to go ahead and push a few more times. Eventually he realized it was the battery. Finally, he replaced the battery, and we were able to watch TV for the next 2 days. Finally, the parking was difficult. We were almost afraid to leave, because when we returned, there might not be enough space. We actually looked out on the street for parking one night, and none was available. By the time we got back, we found one space. The room was very Spartan. There were virtually no amenities. The coffee machine used coffee (tea-type) bags rather than an actual coffee maker (only enough for three small cups). One tiny bar of soap on the sink. Very Disappointed.

They eventually brought another refrigerator up to our room with a working freezer, but now the fridge wouldn't get cold! I can't make this up! Later, we discovered that the handle on the microwave was broken which posed a minor challenge. Apparently, this establishment spent several months upgrading the property prior to our stay. The hotel had a lot of unhoused people nearby which I feel should be mentioned. Positives - Clean room. Comfortable bed.

(Check the filtered/hidden reviews.) Wellstone is marketed as a retreat center for aspiring writers, but it does indeed feel more like a shoddy youth hostel. The main house may have once been majestic, but it has fallen into a state of disrepair. The accommodations were poorly maintained and unsanitary, with ripped furniture, non-functioning lamps, and mildew in my bathroom. The grounds were in a sad state, with a filthy pool and unusable hot tub that had only a few inches of dirty water. The mattress was so old, uncomfortable, and sagging that I simply didn't sleep. The bedding had some unidentifiable stains that appeared to be fluids, which was quite concerning. When I brought it up with the hosts, they seemed completely unconcerned and dismissed me. The bath towels were old, scratchy, and smelled of mildew. As others have mentioned, the hosts request that you use cloth napkins - which is great, except that they do not wash theses napkins between meals. They instead instructed us to re-use other guests' napkins at subsequent meals, which is dangerously unhygienic. Reminder that I came here to write. It was a terrible place for me to write, in part because there's a loud family that lives in the house, and in part because there were no lights. That's right -- no lights bright enough to read by. A few mood lamps, nothing more. I am not a morning person and do most of my writing in the evenings. At sundown, I was forced to be done with all reading. It was too dark to read my book drafts, which I'd printed out; let alone any primary sources, books I was using for research. Unless you happen to bring a headlamp or a bevy of your favorite floor-lamps, you will also be out of luck. Make sure to read the other reviews that have been filtered out before you decide to apply for this "writing retreat." For me, it was neither a retreat nor a useful place to write. I wish I'd booked a hotel instead. You might want to consider the same.

One of the world's best hostels! Definitely best hostel in Santaa Cruz (the only one!) (:-) Very nice Victorian Cottages at a City Park. Fantastic trees! Close to Main Beach, Pier and Boardwalk; not far from City Center. Bus stop nearby. Best surfing spots (and surfing museum) within walking distance. Beach Volleyball down the street. Santa Cruz is: THE Surf City USA! Hostel is in a beautiful setting, it's clean, inexpensive, it's an HI. We try to keep it friendly, but alcohol (or drug) abuse won't be tolerated. No age restrictions. Biggest gripes are 11PM curfew (neighbors had to be placated) and no onsite parking (but it's nearby). Lots of things to do and see and be seen in Santa Cruz, definitely a Weird Place!. Great volunteer opportunities at hostel for local students and seniors. Very biased (but true) review from volunteer board member. read more

THe location of this hostel is in a tourist area with difficulty parking and a few blocks from gangland and drug havens. The staff is NASTY! The 23 ish woman with long blond hair who claims to be a manager should not be interacting with the public;she is incompetent, rude, ignorant and arrogant and abusive to people. She must be fired. The rooms are OK but the place is dirty. The staff are lazy and do not represent the hosteling spirit. If you must stay for the night here, prepare to be hassled. read more

I said 3 times that I didn't want to give that information but she insisted on it so I hung up and made a booking through booking dot com and advised early (after midnight) arrival. When we arrived we were informed they were full and could not accommodate until after 3 pm!! This after a SIX hour drive !!! We cancelled the room so they could rebook it, (like around 1230 am when we arrived) but they kept the $200 plus tax anyhow. Had Reservations just quoted me a rate and taken the reservation instead of insisting on my home address she woukd have figured out my travel plans - which now that I think of it, she probably never had a room. The information she requested was most likely to fill a quota. Horrible. Absolutely Slimy but in line with the reported exorbitant parking fees. If you have a chance look elsewhere.

Only two glitches: finding the door to the room, lol, it was adjacent to the recessed door to the room next door; being on the coast it's hard to escape mold/mildew and altho I'm pretty allergic I didn't have any symptoms. Rm. 304, in case you need to avoid that. Never saw a staff member, so if you'd like to be contact free, there's that. Clean facility overall. No bugs. No damage to room. Great price for a great location.

There are also tables outside. Unfortunately they do not have a spa or pool. They do have some rooms with a spa tub. Our room was on the smaller size. There are no air conditioners in the room. In the closet was a fan and a space heater. We had our window open at night for the fresh ocean breeze and that kept Us cool enough for an August evening. We had a mini fridge, microwave, and safe in another closet. No coffee maker or complimentary water in the room. That is all located in the office. The bathroom was a great size for two of us. It was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and soap. I don't recall seeing a blow dryer. The bed was ok. Not uncomfortable, but not comfortable. Location is great. The pier and boardwalk are all walking distance. Lots of restaurants and shops. The hotel is on a cliff so there is not direct access to the beach. You do need to walk a little bit down the street to gain access, but it is a very short walk. I highly recommend staying here. I can not wait to go back.

We stayed in the cottage studio for a weekend which was fine but also not cheap - however needed with our kids and wanted the large patio/balcony. We booked directly on their site and saw the photos and they did not include the reality. Instead of an ocean view we had large plants blocking every part of the view except for the far edges. We were the only balcony with this. It was frustrating as there was no hanging out with a nice view while there. There is also no beach access and the walk up and down the hill to the pier access is steep and tedious. Just fyi. So if you just want to chill and don't care about seeing the ocean stay in the cottage studio, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. We were disappointed.

The rooms are comfortable and every one of them has a wonderful view of the beach and Santa Cruz Wharf (and the Boardwalk a bit farther away down the beach). Love that they offer a complimentary selection of e-books, audio books, meditations and podcasts (QR code to scan right on the bedside table) and that they've eliminated all single-use plastic water bottles on their property. The weather was perfect during our visit in early February. Staff were all friendly and helpful ~ special shout outs to Elaine and Shannon for all of their help leading up to our stay. Everyone is nice and helpful so I'm not checking the corners of the bathroom for rust lol it's not that serious. It's CLEAN and the perfect place to stay with kids on the beach. Walking distance to the boardwalk and who doesn't love valet! They had fun activities for the kids at the pool and the poolside service was great. The SO booked a stay here for one night, since we'd be in Santa Cruz til late evening and didn't want to drive the 2 hours home. Since it was Labor Day weekend, rates for the largest room on the ground floor was over $400! Craziness! Anyway, we checked in around 4PM with Adriana, who handed us a key and showed us to our room. When checking in, you fill out a form with basic info plus what time you want to be present for breakfast. We chose the latest (9AM). We stayed in the Empire room, the biggest room on the ground floor with a fireplace and its own bathroom. It's decorated with art either collected by Constantin or created by Adriana... very eclectic, very classical, very quaint. I loved it! The bed was bouncy and super comfy, and it felt like home. The next morning, we sat in the breakfast room to start the rather gloomy day. Our table was dressed in antique, hand-woven placemats and tablecloths, and cups of fresh fruit sat above. Adriana personally served us. I have to admit the breakfast was kinda basic - fruit, Costco blueberry muffin, Costco croissant, and scrambled eggs. That's about it. No meat portion or anything really home-cooked (except ~maybe~ the egg). Really nothing to note... which is a bummer! In the end, a totally cute bed-n-breakfast that's close to the Boardwalk. Would recommend, but don't hype yourself up for the breakfast! PS. I believe you can rent the house for intimate weddings! So adorable!

Then I discovered the floor was filthy! I was walking around barefoot in it and my feet were black on the bottom. It would take weeks to get that bad. So disgusting! Don't let kids crawl around or sit on it... And they obviously didn't clean the shower because there was a good amount of hair around the drain. The dresser with a missing drawer was interesting but I didn't need to use it so whatever. The mattress was hard as a rock so I really didn't sleep well for the 3 nights I was there but I know some people prefer that. The only reason I didn't pack up and leave after the filthy floor thing was the worry that the other ones in my price range were equally bad. Next time, I'll save up a lot more money for a good hotel that cleans the rooms! Never again for this crappy place. The only redeeming quality was I didn't see any bedbugs.

The manager, Allison, was very accommodating and she gave us all the information we needed about our stay when we booked the room. One warning- if you're a light sleeper, avoid unit F. It sits right on Cliff St. which is fairly busy. The weather was warm, but we couldn't sleep with the windows open because of the street noise. I would recommend to the owners that you invest in some tower fans for your units. All in all, we were very pleased with Surfside Apartments.
