    Good morning, Runnahs!!
    Anthony D.

I can't think of anything better than a great run through Santa Monica and the usually sold out Santa Monica Classic is a great way to do it. Race Day morning was pretty laid back considering the amount of runners in this race. The race day bib pickup is a definite plus and was well organized and quick. You have 2 choices for parking, either close to the start line at Ocean View Park, or closer to the finish line by the Santa Monica Pier. Either way, it's about a mile in between the two. I personally opt to park in one of the structures closer to the finish and then take the one mile walk to the starting line area as my warm-up. Other than perhaps the first mile and the turn up on San Vicente, the course is within view of the ocean. It's a nice course, just not very exciting. It's pretty much an out and back. My only critique would be that the races start a little too late. The 5K started at 8:00am and the 10K at 8:30. It's still pretty warm in September and the course gets even warmer running UP San Vicente. Plenty of course support for the short races with water with post-race hydration and food at the finish line festival located on the world famous Santa Monica Pier. Medals are always nice and well done. A short sleeve tech shirt also given with registration and race day bib pick up is available for FREE! This race also happens to be one of the three races that comprise the Conqur LA Challenge. The Pasadena Half Marathon and the Skechers LA Marathon are the other two.

The race: A fairly easy 5k & 10k route, no hills or major inclines. A decent size local race organized by the group that runs the LA Marathon, the participant numbers cap off around 4000 people. It's a good race for beginners that want to get that first race under their belt, and good for experienced runners trying to get a PR time in an official race since the course is mostly flat. Leading up to the race the Conqur group & race sponsor Sketchers held free training/fun runs to get people prepared for the race. The end of each training run had guest speakers from Kaiser to give health and fitness tips/advice & Sketchers held a raffle where they gave away race entries, shoes, magic bullets, etc... Expo: The pre race expo/bib pick up was small local even with a few sponsors. The post race expo was on the Santa Monica pier with a few bigger sponsors & some good games to play to win prizes. Parking was pretty much everywhere, your best bet it to park in one of the structures close to the pier/finish line. The start line is a mile away from the finish line so you'll have a long walk back after the race if you park by the start line. Realistically the long walk to the start line before the race is a decent warm up.

So glad that the Santa Monica 5K/10K Classic is back in 2015! The Santa Monica race was held in mid-May from 2006 to 2013, but returned in mid-September in 2015. Benefitting the Santa Monica Educational Foundation, this race has one of the most scenic and beautiful race courses in Southern California. Running definitely doesn't feel like a chore especially when going down Ocean Boulevard with views of the Pacific right next to you. Start line is located at Ocean View Park and the finish line is located at iconic Santa Monica Pier. The 5k course is a nice and short run for beginners, and I suggest registering for the 10K course if you want a more challenging course. The first two thirds of the 10K course goes at a steady but slight uphill grade. Almost stopped to catch my breath during the first two thirds of the 10K, only to be saved by the remaining downhill third of the course. Happy to have accomplished my goal of finishing a 10K in under an hour at the Santa Monica Classic! For race day, there's plenty of parking available on adjacent residential streets and city-owned structures, but come early. We parked in the city-owned structure right by Third Street promenade, which was about a 20-minute walk to the start line, but a very short walk from the finish line! Also, shirts are not handed out at bib pick-up before the race, but rather after the race, so there's really no need to do your bib pick-up the day before.

My first Santa Monica Classic Run and it was a smooth 5K with my 7 year old daughter. I'm glad we've tried it. 9/13/15. It was a very warm and humid day and the water stop was at Mile 2. There was no difficult elevation at all. Smooth process. Started on time. Next time,I will park close to the finish line which is a mile away from the start. The expo was at the SM Pier. There were many stuff that they were giving away but the line was ridiculous and with the heat? No,thank you. We claimed our bling and shirt and we walked away. Overall, the challenge was the heat not the course itself. ;)

I ran in this event last weekend, I signed up for the 10k which kicks off at 8am, there is also a 5k segment that started earlier at 7:30am. Because of this, the starting area was not that packed and I was able to stretch on the grass area right next to the starting line. The course starts just south of the Ocean Park and Barnard Way intersection. The course snakes through Santa Monica (Barnard Way, Main Street , Colorado, Ocean Ave, San Vicente Blvd). The turnaround is up San Vicente Blvd at 11th street, where the 10kers turnaround and head to the finish line at the Santa Monica Pier. Freebies included Vitamin water, organic bananas/apples, raisins, fruit bars, Coke Zero, POM Pomegranate juice, and Powerbar. I saw several people with eco-friendly Heal the Bay bags but they were out when I got there. The free Nike dri-fit t-shirts were nice. Overall I had a good time and all for a good cause, Heal the Bay. They had a cool display with ocean life which included a sea urchin, crabs, starfishes, and jellyfishes.

Another great way to start a Sunday morning! The weather was perfect, the organization was wonderful. They honored the $10 discount to all 5k runners who requested it, due to the non-marking of the turn around point which added about another mile for some of us during last year's run. Great spectators who cheer for any/everyone at the finish line. Minus 2 stars for letting the "Under 21 Division" start at the front of the 5k. Another nightmare similar to the one we experienced during the City of Angles 1/2 Marathon. These brats made it a point to spend most of the time zig-zagging and sudden-stopping all over the place which really slowed people down, not to mention how unsafe it was trying not trip trip over them and trying to refrain from punching them. The 5 star rating is because everything else about this race is awesome! The expo rocks! The NIKE t-shirts are fantastic! Great music. Lots of goodies from Whole Foods (bananas, apples, granola bars, raisins, POM Pomegranate Juice), Free Photo booth hosted by POM, Coke Zero, Vitamin Water, Powerade, and water being passed out. Heal the Bay giving away bags. Most important: This race supports one of my favorite causes: HEAL THE BAY If you didn't get to do it this year, please join the fun next year! Cheers!

Ask the Community - Santa Monica Classic

How much elevation is there in the 5K? It looks like there's some in the beginning going over a bridge - or is that flat?

There's no real elevations, just a tiny incline at the beginning as you go over to the next street, & again around the 2nd mile when you're near Colorado.

Our party ordered mocktails and cocktails - the verdict on the drinks was half and half. I thought my mango mule was just okay. It was lacking the mango flavor. When we asked for an accommodation, the security guard was rude and told us that if my son wanted water, he could walk all the way to the entrance every time, despite the distance from the bowling area. Hoping to resolve the issue, I spoke with the manager, Luis Gonzalez, but unfortunately he was just as dismissive and uninformed about autism and disabilities. Rather than listening and showing compassion, he was rude and unwilling to understand my son's needs. Businesses that serve families should make an effort to educate their staff about disabilities and neurodiversity. With autism becoming more widely recognized, basic awareness, empathy, and reasonable accommodations should not be too much to ask. This experience left us feeling unwelcome and unsupported. I will also be reaching out to upper management, including Cynthia Torres, to make her aware of this situation and to see whether changes can be made. As an autism mom, it is my responsibility to advocate not only for my son but for other individuals with autism and disabilities as well. No family should have to experience being dismissed or treated without understanding when simply requesting reasonable accommodations. My hope is that this feedback leads to better education, awareness, and compassion from staff so that all guests feel welcomed and respected.

After I found out we were going I looked up the yelp reviews and was severely disappointed. We went ahead and downgraded our ticket from vip to GA since we figured it would be a bust and didn't wanna throw away more money. This event was nothing like last years! We had a really great time. There were no lines for anything. The tots were like buffet style? And I never saw people waiting for them. There was a little alley with fun old games and there was usually one open. They had a larger scale Jenga. Not the huge one but much bigger than the standard. There was a main stage on that floor and lots of fun seating around there. Mini golf we did not check out. It looked small and my boyfriend said it wasn't free. There was lots of music and fun seating all around. Nice large pillow fort where the karaoke was. The munchie station there was giving out cereal. They had an inflatable horse race I wanted to try out until I saw someone fall forward on their face (would have been me too!) the guy running that was really fun and nice, thanking us on our way out. They also had this weird room where you draw on everything including men in bodysuits plus another area to play with play-doh. There was a cool old hippie bus to hang in. We didn't take part in the silent disco or the prophet but the prophet always had people in there and we didn't want to interrupt. Cool concepts on both though. There was also a cool smokers lounge. There was lights and visuals everywhere that really make it feel like a kaleidoscope. They have obviously stepped it up significantly from last year and I wish I would have had some good photos to prove it but they also had good bars with strong drinks ( and I did I mention the cool smokers lounge?) I HIGHLY recommend this event and would even go next year if they keep it at this level and maybe add some different experiences. (Keep the mini golf, wanna try that 4/20/20)

For 2016, FPAC was held for the first time at Echo Park Lake, a newly renovated city park and a beautiful venue for the festival. I haven't been to FPAC for a couple of years, and I was a little disappointed at first when I checked online and found out that the festival is down to a single day. When the festival was held in San Pedro, it was a 2-day event filled with two performance stages, food booths, Filipino craft vendors, demonstrations, etc. Even though it's down to a single day, however, FPAC 2016 had the same degree of excitement and pride as in previous years, attended not just by Filipinos and Filipino Americans, but a diverse group of Angelenos representing all races and backgrounds. Throughout the day, the performance stage offered performances by Filipino and Filipino American artists. The emcee was the amazing and talented Giselle Tongi, the host of Channel 18's Kababayan Today. We got the chance to catch the dance troupe Kayamanan ng Lahi (translated "Treasure of our Race") as well as Broadway star Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon). Kayamanan ng Lahi is truly an L.A. treasure, offering dance workshops to all ages as young as 5 years old. The youngest dancers of the troupe definitely stole the show. Jon Jon Briones, who starred recently at East West Player's production of La Cage aux Folles and will once again star as the engineer in Miss Saigon on Broadway, is another Filipino treasure who graced the stage at FPAC 2016. Plenty of Filipino food was offered at various food booths at FPAC 2016. Vendors included Neri's Turo Turo, Kapamilya Restaurant, The Park's Finest, Magnolia Ice Cream, Manila Sky, Enseymada Project. Due to the long lines at Neri's, we chose Kapamilya Restaurant, located in Fountain Valley (4 Stars for the Chicken and Pork BBQ sticks). We also finally got to try Enseymada Project (4 Stars for the yummy desserts). There were also various Filipino vendors at FPAC 2016, offering a variety of crafts as well as clothing. Previous reviews stated that there was a lack of vendors when the event was held at Grand Park in 2014 and 2015, and this was definitely not the case in 2016. Why not 5 stars? FPAC 2016 happened to fall on a very hot day in L.A., and Echo Park Lake does not have enough shade. It would have been nice if organizers made more tents and canopies available for attendees. Also, there were not enough seats set up for the audience at the performance stage. Moreover, there was no consistency between the food vendors whether they accepted cash or FPAC bucks/food tickets. We were originally going to get The Park's Finest, but they only accepted FPAC bucks, but there was no clear signage where to get FPAC bucks/food tickets. Finally, I wish that there was more publicity for the event. FPAC 2016 was pretty well attended, but there's room for FPAC to grow. The FilAm Arts website, for example, was not updated with the FPAC schedule and vendors until the week of the festival. I would love to see FPAC grow and get even bigger and better in the future. Don't miss it in 2017!

I highly recommend a visit at FPAC 2014 for the food and cultural performances. There's also a…read moreculinary arts center if you want to learn how to prepare Filipino food and where you can sample free food and drink. A great way to get a taste of the culture and food of the Philippines! The setting this year is different from year's past in San Pedro over looking the sea. More of a central location this time and the new location seems to attract more non-Filipinos (including foreigners) than the more secluded San Pedro park location. Instead of charging an admission fee, the event at Grand Park is free! Set on three different levels (areas) below City Hall, the feeling is a lot different this year because you'll have to walk up and down some steps to reach each area. There's two stages, the main stage (Legacy) and Generations Stage. The big names such as comedian, Rex Navarette, cultural performances, and celebrity MCs usually are at main stage. To taste the food, you'll have to buy non-refundable tickets with cash or credit card. T-shirts are available for $15, water is $2, and malongs are $25 at the FPAC stores/information booths. There's also vendors selling different items at the event such as apparel. I recommend trying the tropical popsicles (calamansi, ube-red bean, azuki red beans), shaved snow or halo-halo. There's also vendors selling Filipino food such as lumpia, pancit, and Filipino-style BBQ. On the upper level, there some Filipino-owned food trucks such as White Rabbit truck. I recommend trying the sisig tacos. Ciclavia runs through Grand Park and FPAC 2014 on Sunday, so expect road closures around the area. I'd recommend taking the Metro (red line, exit Civic Center) or plan ahead to find paid or street parking and arrive knowing which streets will be closed. FPAC 2014 will be another hot day on Sunday, so don't forget to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, bring beach mats or blankets, hats, and sunscreen.
