All the negative reviews are true. I spent a lot of time gathering my medical records and preparing for my appointment, and I would never have gone in if I knew my insurance wasn't actually accepted. They told me over the phone that my insurance was verified before even scheduling the appointment, but when I arrived, I was told they don't take it. The front desk was extremely rude, especially Sophia. The manager, Kim, didn't seem to care and just defended her staff. I wasted both my time and time off work, and there was no apology or accountability. All the negative reviews are true. I like the doctor, but it is almost impossible to reach anyone at their office. They have no portal or online means of communicating. They close for lunch from 12 to 2, but at 2:30 they're still not answering, and there is no way to leave a message; the outgoing message just loops, never letting you record a message. Emergency line--a last attempt--will not take messages. Very frustrating. Have had this issue for a couple of years. Please answer your phones, or hire more staff! read more

Please read in its entirety. The front office staff and Cindy the office manager are money hungry, lack ethical values and professionalism. I called to schedule an appointment to see Dr. Santangelo and they told me that I had to pay $100 in advance because I had missed and rescheduled appointments dating back to 2014. Since we travel back and forth between CA and Reno, and being that Dr. Santagelo is an excellent doctor, we decided to take a 7 1/2 hour drive so I could have my yearly check up, and agreed to pay $100.00 in advance with the agreement that it would be reimbursed to me as long as I showed up to my appointment. The original proposal by the office was that they would refund me after my insurance paid them, which could be approximately 3 months! When I demanded to speak with their office manager, she agreed that the $100.00 would be refunded to me as long as I showed up to my appointment. On the day of the appt, I arrived late, and was told that Dr. Santagelo could not see me because she had an urgent surgery to attend to. They tried to reschedule my appointment, yet I was only in town for two days. Since Dr. Santagelo could not see me, I requested for my deposit to be returned since I complied by showing up for my appointment. They made me wait to speak to the office manager, to then tell me that they did not intend to provide a refund. I insisted that they refund me the $100.00 because I was there for my appointment, so their response was that they would only refund $50.00 and would charge $50.00 because I was late. I have searched for their office policy and there is no mention that a patient will be charged for being late. As I left the office, I demanded for my money to be returned and to date (a week later) they have not provided a refund. Even though doctor Santagelo is and excellent doctor, the lack of professionalism, ethics, values, morals, and care for patients from the front office leaves much to be desired. read more

I am a 69-year-old man, who just went to Dr. Santangelo for a bladder tumor resection. I can honestly say that I have never been to a more caring, professional doctor in my life. Only giving her a one star because I have to in order to complete review. Friday, January 19, 2018 I went to ER due to kidney pain. They completed a CT scan that showed I had a kidney stone in my right side and go see Dr. I already had a Dr since this stone has been sitting in my right kidney for 5 years. So called my Dr. Santangelo and got appt that following Monday. She told me stone was still too high and if she would try to take out it would get thrown back into kidney. She wanted to wait it out, and made appt for a month. Told me to pop some pain meds as needed, etc. So Month later went back, but day before I got a scan to bring back to her office to see if stone had moved. She felt the CT scan showed the stone at 9 mm, but other scan showed stone 6-7 mm which is passable. So told me to cont. and come back in another month. So keeping paying my $45 co pay and wait it out. Had appointment in April that I cancelled and tried to reschedule for May but office gave me run around cause I cancelled my April appt. Was sent to her nurse's VM and just keep getting run around. I wasn't in pain so wasn't forcing appointment since doctor never made it urgent. So July called back to get appointment and they couldn't get me in till Monday, September 10th. The Sunday night before my appointment my stone finally moved and I was in excruciating pain for 4 hours. My husband called Dr. Santangelos office after hours and she told me to take two pain meds, and Ibuprofen and come in Monday @ 8:30. Went to office and she told me "Oh wow why did you wait so long. You should have told my office it was urgent". So we set my produce for that coming Thursday signed some paper work, and then her nurse comes in and says.... "Oh you have HMO and are not covered, everything would be out of pocket". How is it nine months later you noticed I'm not covered?? So I had to get a rush referral from my HMO to find a new Dr. It has been 2 weeks and I have had the stone and stent removed. Stone was a 9mm and should have been removed from the start in January. DO NOT SEE THIS DR SHE WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER. STAFF IN UNKNOWLEDGEABLE!!! read more

Amended and updated. I was too harsh Regarding Dr S. This doctor won't win an award for being the most personable physician but she seemed capable enough. Her front office is atrocious! Trying to schedule a one year follow up appointment for my son, they could not find any record of his visit approx 18 mos ago. Both calls I was put on hold for 5 minutes. When the scheduler finally picked up, she ended up terminating the connection. On the second try at scheduling an appointment, I got put on hold twice during the call for extended periods. In all, it took over 30 minutes to do basic scheduling. The person also had a heavy accent and was difficult to understand. If I were doing it again, I'd look for a different provider. read more

I made an appointment with Dr. Santangelo's staff after being assured they were a preferred provider of Blue Shield. I went for an examination and was seen by Dr Santangelo and was informed I would require surgery, while being scheduled for surgery I was told Blue Shield was not in network or not a preferred provider and that there would be considerable out of pocket expenses. I informed the Dr I had checked with her staff prior to setting the appointment and was assured they were in network and that had her staff had been honest when I made my appointment I would have not chose to see her. Not only did I have a bad experience with the Dr and her staff when I declined to schedule surgery with her, I received several nasty phone calls and letters threatening negative credit reports if I didn't pay for services I had to see another Dr. that was qualified with Blue Shield to perform. I honestly do not know how anyone could give Dr. Santangelo a positive review when her office staff is so incomprehensibly incompetent. As far as a urologist goes she is as good as many, but you have to deal with her staff and that in and of itself should send you elsewhere. They are not truthful, they are too often dismissive and they cancel appointments (or say they canceled your appointment when you arrive for it). You will have no record of hearing from them and there you are standing at the desk being told to reschedule. It not only has happened to my family twice, we sat there and witnessed it happen to another patient as well at one point. People make mistakes, but more than once is inexcusable and with a dose of dry dismissive attitude to chase it down. Look elsewhere for a doctor who considers their patients' time as valuable as theirs. This office thinks saying they are sorry covers the time off work, the expense of travel, the time you invest as the patient and the stress of finding out your appointment was canceled in some "phantom" manner that never reached you while you are standing there at the check in desk. This level of incompetence is not something I have ever witnessed in any other doctor's office in my entire life, bar none. If you value your time find another doctor. read more

Don't waste your time. This office must think people have time to waste. I came as a new patient and completed all my tons of new patient paperwork. After a long wait, they told me the doc was really behind and they had to reschedule me. I'd that wasn't bad enough ( I get it things happen) I had to wait a month to get back in. They told me to have my ultrasound scans printed for the doctor so I came prepared. Once I was there they told me they couldn't find all the paperwork I completed the first time. I left and told them id find a new doctor that doesn't waste my time. On my way back to work they called to tell me they found my paperwork and asked if I wanted to come back. Unbelievable. I told them no, I have now left two honed samples for nothing and wasted my time. If she wants to see me she can do a virtual visit. I'm done coming in there for nothing and they have all my records and urine. No organization and no respect for your time. I'm sure they don't even care they lost a new patient read more

So any doctor can see you when you are well, but when you have an emergency or are really sick, it is so comforting to know that your doctor, more specifically, her nurse Xanath, will be there to take your call, or get you into the office quickly. I am so grateful for Xanath and I am sure that Dr. Santangelo could not do her job as well without her. She is always there to call in a lab order and a prescription to the pharmacy. Additionally, I have been Dr. Santangelo's patient for years because of her care and because she listens to her patients. I would recommend her to anyone. She offered to prescribe a second medicine in addition to what I'm already taking but she thought it wasn't necessary to take at this point in time so I opted against it for now. Returning on a Thursday from vacation in Europe, I developed a serious blockage of the bladder. We arranged from Seattle for a Monday meeting with Dr. Santangelo, who did not know me and with whom I have no prior history. I was stabilized, first in Seattle, then again in Thousand Oaks ER, intending to hold out for the Monday meeting. After a serious blockage again on Sunday, and a CT SCAN, the doctor performed emergency surgery to remove a large clot formed by continuous bleeding, followed by curative surgery later that week. From the quality of her work, and her responsiveness to someone's critical need, I can understand how an office schedule can become chaotic, frustrating patients who think their issue is the most important one on the doctor's calendar. Unfortunate, but too bad: She sets priorities according to patient needs. The office staff appears to serve several doctors, and could use some coordination training in a busy environment. For example, I was called to reschedule an appointment because the doctor had to commit to emergency surgery - which turned out to be mine! By my experience, she proved to have great hands, great communication, great compassion, and great judgment. read more

I kept feeling like I had a UTI but would test negative at my local urgent care so made an appointment thinking a female urologist might be able to help me. After examining me she told me she didn't want to run any expensive tests on me and alluded that it may be in my head. Man...did that make my head spin. Saw another urologist who bothered to do a cystoscopy and told me I had a lot of vascularity. Since them I've been diagnosed with IC due to mast cells. Doctors who think it's all in your head just don't want to bother, nor do they have the creativity, to find out what's wrong with you. Run, don't walk, away. read more

I ended up in ER in extreme pain from a kidney stone after being diagnosed via CT scan. I was sent home with the understanding that the stone was now in the bladder and would cause no further pain. Not true! I found Dr. Santangelo and called the office and they were booked a month in advance. After explaining my situation they retrieved my scan results from the hospital and got me in right away. Dr Santangelo was very knowledgeable and explained in detail why I was still in pain and after her very spot-on diagnosis i was treated successfully. Okay, this is a tough one, I've never written a negative yelp..so here goes...I just got home from Dr. Santagelo's office with my 10 year old son (her patient) - it was our second appt (a follow up) Our first visit we waited an HOUR - it was ridiculous - actually we waited longer as we got there early to fill out paperwork. At no point did the front office staff say - she was running behind or do you want to reschedule. We finally saw the doctor - who was nice - her nurse is EXCELLENT as was very frustrated as well at the wait. Today, we went back, I know things happen and just figured that first visit - was just out of the ordinary etc. Well, NOT SO -just got home - after AGAIN an hour wait - finally after over 30 minutes I asked - they said, oh it will be another 20 minutes. Well we waited 20 more and it wasn't - the nurse again was VERY FRUSTRATED as were we. My husband took off work to get my other children, i rearranged a carpool to take my son - all plans laid - and we waited and waited and waited. We finally left as we had to be somewhere else. I asked the front desk why didn't someone call us? Why didn't they, when we checked in say - we are running an HOUR behind? As we left the entire LOBBY WAS FULL! Again we were told, oh we had lots of emergencies today - I think what is happening is they are over booking every day and this is the norm instead of the rarity! -I tried immediately to get into the office my cardiologist had referred me to. Their first appt was 6 weeks away. I had a large kidney stone diagnosed via ultra/CT scans that needed to be broken up. Dr. Santangelo's office listened to my story and got me in the next day. Within a few days I went into surgery. The concern of the office to get me in, the caring nurse and Dr. S... made this a painless and thankful medical emergency.
