On my recent trip to Houston!…read more When I was searching for dowtown bars and dancing, Behind Closed Doors popped up. It looked dark, clubbish, and fun (exactly what I was looking for) and I couldn't wait to come here. After a 25 minute Uber ride we were downtown and walking to our destination. At first we could not find it but thankfully a nice gentlemen showed us where it was. Upon walking in, darkness with these bright lights paved our way. We sat down at the bar, but realized dancing did not start until 10pm. The bartender came over and said to us "we have a speakasy behind door #3" we were like WHAT! Let's go. So, we walked down the dark hallway and pushed open door #3 (hence the name) to find this super cool speakeasy bar. Dim lights, really modern decor, comfy suede chairs and best of all, some really great cocktails. If you are ever in Downtown Houston, I highly recommend you coming here. I promise you will have the best time. We did not stay for dancing.

The drinks were solid, and the overall atmosphere was definitely a vibe. We went on a Saturday evening, so it was pretty crowded, but once we found our spot in the Gold Room, we stayed there most of the night. Great music, great energy, and a unique concept. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something different for a night out. Not sure how it took me this long to stumble in here. Parking is what it is downtown so, there's that.

This place is extremely small and intimate, it's basically a home they converted into a premium cocktail bar. We were seated and the shenanigans began, in a good way. We ordered the innovative cocktails that came with lights, camera and action. This isn't a place to come eat, as they have small bites, but you should eat before you come. We definitely enjoyed the experience and the ability to have intimate conversation without all the racket during most happy hrs. Check them out if you're in the area.

Same name, different vibe. I was a huge fan of the old Diversion, so I was really looking forward…read moreto this reopening. The original had this secretive, exclusive vibe that made every visit feel special - bidets and mouthwash in the restrooms, feminine hygiene products thoughtfully provided, and jars of preserved fruits and homemade concoctions lining the shelves. It was quirky, refined, and full of surprises. The new Diversion feels more mainstream. It's still a beautiful space and date night appropriate but it's missing some of that original character. They start you off with hot towels and a "Japanese green tea," which is actually a cup of dashi broth. I did not mind - it was tasty. The glowing menu is still around, though I don't remember the weird green backlight that honestly does not make anyone look attractive. The old Diversion also knocked it out of the park with every single cocktails in terms of creativity, including caviar on the side, beach/sand concepts, bone marrow cocktails, cereal and milk. Every one of their cocktail was a concept. Here, the cocktails are pretty... but normal. I chose the most exciting sounding cocktail on the menu - Operation White Flame. The server came with a card that prompts you to say a secret phrase. I was stoked. A secret room? A secret menu item? Are they lighting my drink on fire? No. The drink comes with a piece of paper clipped to it. The server gives you a lighter, and you light the paper on fire. The end. Unfortunately, our server also couldn't have been less interested. We were excited, inquiring about the menu, chatting about the reopening, trying to engage, but every interaction was flat, curt, and monotonous. Seems like he just wants to go home. Maybe that was his secret mission. Finally, the one dish we ordered - steak tartare - took almost an hour to come out. My friend was done with her drink and was dying waiting for something to eat. Kind of silly since, well... tartare is raw. What are y'all doing back there?
