A multifaceted venue that is reminiscent of a club, lounge, and a speakeasy in one spot, Behind Closed Doors brings a kind of vibe that keeps the downtown Houston nightlife scene relevant. The lighting is dark, intimate, and behind every level and door, there is something else going on. There is an element of discovery in every corner and a new adventure on every floor. Ever watch the movie Tron? There are some areas of BCD that feel incredibly futuristic with neon-lit interiors and a legitimate sci-fi feel in some areas. The areas are ass follows: The main bar with a DJ and a spacious dance floor, the red room with a visualizer setup of big bass and pulsating lights, the gold room with a speakeasy feel and a curated cocktail menu, with the secret room that is a unique space behind a certain set of doors. Most of the music on the main bar is good, the DJs are energetic, and the bartenders are efficient while professional. It's not the easiest place to photograph anything, but the different (hidden) spaces make it a worthy destination for discovery. The one area that I don't love is that they rock automatic gratuity. I do love how diverse the crowd is on the weekends, which is a testament to the city. Drinks are solid, but the speakeasy drinks are the ones that stand out the most. Behind Closed Doors really doesn't miss. The fact that you can enjoy 3 very different vibes in one spot without a cover charge feels rare these days. Because it's centrally located on Main Street, easy to walk to after street parking nearby, and the mix of rooms makes it a go-to for me whether I'm with friends or a date. The Gold Room is a whole vibe in itself. Low lighting, luxe cocktails, and that kind of calmer crowd that lets you catch your breath while still feeling in the mix. The speakeasy menu is really creative and changes often. On my most recent visit (a Friday night), I had the Espresso Rapido and Mad Robot, and the ingredients alone made it feel a little more elevated than your usual downtown bar. Now the Red Room upstairs is where the energy shifts. It's loud, hot, packed, and fun. The lighting is intense but makes for some fire photos. The DJs are always solid. The 25+ age crowd was a mix of dancing or chatting along the perimeter of the bar and dance floor. It's a spot where you really get to decide how you want to enjoy the night. This bar/lounge/club in downtown near Market Square has been super hot since it first opened. They have so many great things going for them. There is not 1 but 2 DJs, although you can barely hear the one that plays near the front entrance. There are 2 main rooms, and 1 speakeasy area, and one random voyeur room that is probably the most quiet place of all areas. Upstairs can get packed since its like a free dance area with the best music spun by the DJ. Downstairs I think is even better if you just sit and wait for entertainment to happen all on its own. Their drinks were all pretty good. I felt the ones in the speakeasy room were the best. Out of all the bars along Main in downtown, this is one you will keep coming back to. My initial impression was that this should be the coolest bar in Houston. They had multiple floors, bisexual purple mood lighting, a DJ and large dance floor upstairs too. But after a while I felt like I was at an awkward school dance, with people mostly standing off to the side instead of dancing. Our group pulled up on a Friday night, ready to see what Houston nightlife was all about. The purple neon lights hit me and I thought surely all the cool kids were out here. We got our drinks and headed upstairs, following the siren call of bass, expecting to find a packed dance floor. Instead we find space. So much space you could maybe do a cart wheel in there if you were so inclined. The few people that were there clung to the walls like their lives depended on it. The DJ was trying their best, but the crowd wasn't lit enough. I'm not saying this place was awful. The drinks were good, the vibe was cool in theory and at least there was room to dance without elbowing someone in the face. But for a Friday night it wasn't lively at all. The "hidden bar-Speakeasy" The Gold room, was nice and a more intimate place to relax with a drink. High end liquors, nice bar tenders but the drink was about an 8/10. It was good but nothing special or that stood out about them. $38 for an Old Fashioned and a Sidecar, tip is automatically applied and that's fine. I appreciate them pointing that out. Main bar with all the fun lights and retro feel is a lot of fun as well and also has some smaller food options which was needed at this point. We got the dip which was supposed to have caviar but definitely didn't but was still good. We also got the Wagyu hot dog which was actually really good! The star of the night for me was the drink my wife and I both ordered "Burn After Reading" it was sweet, sour, smoky and spicy. A really incredible drink! Again, tip is included and drinks are less expensive at the front bar. If you leave the tab open it follows you throughout the venue- a nice touch. A cool place to check out and grab a drink at while in downtown Houston. It's very instagramable with a cool vibe. Maybe not the best for taking pictures of yourself though since its dark in there. However, you could tell the quality was good with just the right amount of alcohol to still taste good. People were crowding the pathways so you couldn't even make it across without getting elbowed in the gut by a half dozen people, much less have a chance to get a drink or look around. Your first stop will be the bar where you can enjoy some craft cocktails or lounge on some comfortable seating that surrounds the bar. Once you're ready for more adventure, on the weekends, there's a club upstairs. I haven't checked it out. Or, there's a hidden speakeasy of sorts with its own menu that seats about 15 people. Completely dead on a Monday night, but I can imagine that it must be a really exciting place on the weekend. My only real complaint is that the cocktails are relatively simple, but the prices are very high for Houston. Out celebrating a friend's birthday with a crawl. We ended up at this spot and it was super nice. I can definitely see myself coming here again. The vibe is just right. A mixed crowd, with some serious tunes. I heard stuff I had forgotten about. We were so turned up! I love the physical layout of the place. It's a multi floor, nook and cranny setup. It's got great space design. From the lights, to the color selection (my absolute favorite combo), it's got a lot of appeal. I really liked how the DJ was separated but in their own alcove. I setting the vibe and letting me know, folks will be jamming inside. I didn't get their name but S/O. There was definitely enough space to go up there and jam right in front like your own personal set. The crowd size was just enough for me. Just the right number of people to have enough space to move about. I ended getting one drink, a Tom Collin's with a Lavender Blueberry syrup twist. DELICIOUS. I believe the bartenders name was Steve. He was great. The restroom is pretty small, could have used a little touching up, but I understand it's Friday and heavy traffic. Overall this is a nice spot. He at least told me before he gave me the tab, which is why this isn't an automatic one-star, but the if I'd known this was their business model before I ordered, I would have turned around and left. I attended the hidden speakeasy in their Gold Room. They have some really interesting cocktails that have exquisite Brandies from around the world. The drinks were made fast and the service was great. The Dj was hit or miss. They had a really cool jukebox where if you press the letters L-G-B-T, the entire bar lights up even more with these neon lights. I always appreciate friendly customer service in the bar scene because sometimes it is hard to come by because most bartenders tend to be overwhelmed and rush.
