It's…read morehoused in a quaint old church just a couple blocks off the Rue Principale Ouest and made for an interesting experience, browsing gin, vodka, and rum under stained glass windows. The whole first floor is arrayed with their many spirit options, along with cold cases for canned cocktails and mocktails. A distillery tour was just starting when we arrived, so we got to take a quick look around at the former sanctuary-turned-display area before it was cordoned off. If you want to take a tour, you need to make reservations ahead of time. Even with the tour going on, they still had all their offerings in a shop area right at the entrance. After browsing around, the Tall Man and I asked to taste a few options at the register area. (The staff recommended taking a look before tasting, since they have so many options.) We were excited to discover that their rums are made with sugar cane juice from Martinique à la rhum agricole (vs. made with molasses like other Caribbean rums). Although I speak enough French to travel, the staff helpfully explained the different offerings in English so that the Tall Man could better understand. In the end, we picked up a few bottles of the spiced rum for ourselves and as gifts (I usually don't like spiced or flavored rums, but theirs was really good!), as well as their whisky (interesting and super smooth) and one of their gins (very herby). We overloaded our suitcases from the start of our trip, but it was worth it. Everyone loved their gifts, and we've been enjoying this taste of Quebec at home. The mocktails are pretty well balanced and not too sweet. It was also a plus to see Cherry River spirits served at bars and restaurants around Magog. We will be back, hopefully for a tour! One note: We visited with a baby and stroller. Due to recent snow, the ramp was blocked. There isn't much space inside to push a stroller anyways, though, so we folded it up and put it in a corner while one of us hung out with the baby close to the entrance. (Very cramped quarters, but it worked.) In the future we would probably use a baby carrier or leave the stroller outside if it hadn't been snowing.

It has a bakery in the store and you can get some nice pies, breads and cakes. Since the store changed names, the selection of beer has increased dramatically. They now have beer from many of the microbreweries in Montreal. I even found (and bought) a bottle of Kissmeyer beer from Odense, Denmark but brewed in Ontario. We visited the Kissmeyer brewery last month when we were in Denmark. Other parts of the store include the dairy section where you can buy Quebec butter, milk and other products. Quebec milk is better than US milk for cappuccino frothing. They have a small meat department and produce area. If you are American, stop by US Customs on your way to Canada and become familiar with the produce you can and can't bring back to the US. There are lots of rules with produce.

More often we spend a few hours tasting and dining at the bistro. As for the actual tasting, Tracy knows what's up. She is very easy going and incredibly knowledgeable about the products from the black snake whiskey, and eden iced ciders to the jasper Hill Farm cheese. You pay a minimal price and pick a number of alcoholic beverages to sample off the list. Tracy will arrange your choices in the order in which they should be tasted and give you the history of each as you taste. They have wine, vodka, gin, and ice cider. Ice cider is NOT a beer-like cider such as angry Orchard. It is a fancy type of distilled cider made by an elaborate process of freezing and skimming off ice which leaves a concentrated, amazing cider. It's made somewhere else in Vermont, but we learned they recently started making it in the basement of the tasting center itself. All products are Vermont made. Next we move over to the bistro and visit "pixi" the bartender. We order the shrimp and corn fritters with maple butter and the chicken liver pate with apple chutney which Mike was allowed to take home (jar, spoon, and all). I've always loved the fritters which are to die for. "Pixi" brought us extra salted triangle shaped crackers for the pate and gave us numerous samples of various drinks including Hill farmstead's new beer, "Mary" and the "Magog sunset". Whiskey shots are $6. All products from the testing center as well as maple candies, bakery items, and cheeses are available for sale at the back of the store. They even provide maps and information on all their partners. Overall, this is one of my favorite places ever. Not just in the Northeast Kingdom, not just in Vermont, but ever.

We enjoy going to this store because you can find a nice selection of European foods that are difficult if not impossible to find in the US. Prices are good, especially with the US$/CAD$ exchange rate. They also have a very large selection of Quebec beers and European beers that are difficult and expensive if you can find them in the US. There is a huge parking lot that will accommodate even the largest trucks and campers. There are always people around who speak English and French if you need help.

The woman who was running the shop was very kind and told us all about each of the products. Everything is made from blackcurrants; they have syrups, gelato, preserves, and wines. We ended up buying one of each of the wines and a bottle of the syrup, all of which are very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend to anyone passing through the area.
