Sara Jane is my happy place. Both Sara and Leslie are great at suggesting options that will be the most flattering. Sometimes it's great to let them show you something that might be outside your box or you might not think to try on. They make the experience fun and care about their customers. Sara has an incredible eye for color, styles that surprise, as well as any basics you may need. While color is one of the most fun things about her store, she has more toned down pieces if you feel less comfortable wearing some of her more sassy pieces to work. You can always tone it down with just a little kick, if you like. In other words, her collection is diverse, fun, and practical. Clothes for every occasion. As you can see, I'm a big fan. You know those days when you just hate everything in your closet? I've been having a lot of them lately. As I was staring at all the clothes in my closet this morning that are "so last year" I remembered the $50 coupon (off a purchase of $200) that came from my favorite boutique, Sara Jane, just the other day. I grabbed my husband, dog, credit card, and coupon...and we were on our way to do some shopping! As always Sara Jane did not let me down. I found a cute sweater and dress within minutes and Sara was giving me recommendations on how to spice the adorable dress up with a belt. My husband and dog made themselves at home on the patio of Old Town Pub just right next door with the bears game, a beer, and a plate of fries. I think my husband was surprised when I walked out with a bag so soon, but that's the beauty of Sara Jane....with fabulous merchandise and even better service they make shopping easy (and fun!). read more

In an era where most stores do not have customer service, this place goes way beyond that and more. The owner, Sarah, and her salesperson, Leslie, are two of the most knowledgeable people of what looks good on a certain body type and really knows style. They are both so much fun to work with and you feel like you've known them forever. They kept me laughing the whole time while not being pushy at all. so it started with a gift from a client... as a very devout vegan and stylistically a bohemian yogi I was gifted leather gloves and a wool sweater; things that I would never in a million years wear. I called the store and I am assuming I talked to the owner considering she referred to it as "my store". I was attempting to explain my situation and ask about the return policy. She was curt and rude, flat out. She began by stating how she was embarrassed of her website, as I informed her I looked before calling and confirmed that style-wise, this is not somewhere I would ever shop... that is weird. Then she proceeded to say they have lots of jewelry. I explained that I do not wear jewelry. Then she said she has tons of other things. And I again expressed that none of it appealed to me. With that she proceeded to blame my relationship with my client who gifted me was the issue. This wasn't any of her business to comment on. She has no idea why my client does what she does with her gifting choices. She has no idea of the nature of this relationship . I did however explain that my client in fact knows my very, very vegan position and is aware of my style preference anyway. Even though I should not have had to... that aside, she continues to then snap at me that "she had 3 other customers in the store to take care of" and "what did I want?" I was pretty certain I asked directly at some point between her impatience with me, or that somehow it was pretty clear, that I was inquiring about the possibility of a refund. I know it may not have been policy, but I saw my situation as a fluke. Had she worked with me, I may have returned another time to buy something for my sister or someone who would shop there. Now, never. I ended up hanging up as she went on with her attitude of uncaring and snippiness toward me. She did ZERO to try and work with me. She was rude and inflexible and pushy. I recommend not to spend your hard earned money with someone so rude and impatient. There are plenty of other boutique stores in Chicago that would be happy to work with their customers and be grateful for the opportunity to potentially make a new one. I felt like I was in her way. I will never support something like that. Life is too short to be treated poorly by someone you'd be supporting by shopping there. She could have invited me to the store. She could have said she would take a look and see what might suit me, but she did nothing of the kind. Again, just rude, snippy, and impatient. Awful. Especially from one woman to another. The level of excellence that is consistently present in the store's support of customers is truly remarkable. In addition, I think it's important to support local businesses so that is why I decided to become regular in this shop now. The prices are very reasonable also for such high-quality clothing. In addition to this, the location is very convenient for me as it is situated in close proximity to where I work. The previous week, I went shopping and came home with a cute sweater and dress. Last week, one of our super fashionable Yelp execs rocked a jacket that I knew I had to own. I'm not usually one to copy a look, but you don't understand... this jacket is edgy, chic and so flattering. Andrea said she didn't mind if I purchased the same one (hey, she travels 24/7 anyway so we're usually not in the same place at the same time) so off I was. Upon walking in, I was greeted by a helpful staffer who offered to show me all the jackets. She led me to the coveted jacket, but it was a size small in a form-fitting cut. She did find a medium, but in the cream color and I wanted black! And then, she showed me the sale rack and grabbed a cropped black motorcycle jacket. Zippers! Grommets! The body-conscious feminine cut is exactly what I had in mind. And don't forget the key word: sale. PLUS an extra 20% off! Lots of cute dresses and tops caught my eye after a quick scan of the boutique. Though, my one-track mind couldn't focus on any of the other clothes today. Thank you to the yelp fashion show, I found Sara Jane! I went to the "Snooze, you Lose sale" this past Saturday, at 9AM sharp. We woke up super early (for a Saturday) to take advantage of the 40% off the entire store! That is just an amazing deal! I got a super cute bold printed silk dress, a pair of jeans, and 2 pairs of hanky pankys, all for just above $200!!! My friends got a very sleek and sexy black top, a necklace, and a pair of jeans! The jeans were absolutely the best deal, already on sale and an additional 40% off! The hanky pankys were also on sale for 40% off!!! You can't beat just over $10 for hanky pankys! Make sure you double check your receipt though; I realized that I got overcharged and had to get it corrected. Good thing I caught it! Sara also gave us a recommendation on where to get our jeans hemmed with "original hems". We'll see how that turns out! I'll be visiting Sara Jane every time they have a sale - unfortunately I can't afford things at full price :( read more

I love that Sara Jane is a small boutique where personal shopping attention is common. I've visited twice and have been laden with outfits to try and cajoled, which is exactly my shopping style. The folks working there seem to be casual and fun. If there's something I dislike about shopping (in general) it's going through racks. Sara Jane has walls lined with racks (in case that IS your style). I am extremely appreciative that the employees at Sara Jane coddle me and put me into a fitting room and hand me outfits so that I can curtail the racks. Speaking of the fitting rooms, they are curtained off from the rest of the store. The curtains are hard to close and there is a gap along the mirrored wall where you can see clearly into the neighboring fitting room. The clothes are pretty unique. It's nice to know that you won't see any other person wearing the same thing as you when you purchased it from Sara Jane. It's easy to tell that the person (or people) who do the merchandising at Sara Jane has a distinctive style. There are funky patterns, colors, and flowy/stretchy fabrics. I noticed a few items with leather-like accents during my last visit. There are large pieces of jewelry such as bangles, cuffs, and bold necklaces and a few daintier accessories. Although I'm not au courant, I have a vague sense of what works on me. I am short, slender, and have an athletic build. I have nothing to camouflage with pleats and drapery. I need structured clothing to help create curves where there are none. That said, I need to be careful about fitted clothing that is aimed to showcase a tiny waist or length (both of which I don't have). Most of the clothing at Sara Jane is probably intended for women with curves. The first time I went to Sara Jane I tried several pieces and came away empty handed. The next time I tried on at least eight outfits and came away with a dress, two pairs of earrings, and a bandeau (a one-size-fits-all strapless bra) for $150. If it weren't so time consuming, I would like the shopping experience even more. I am a fan of the prices at Sara Jane. I wish that there were more selections that worked for me. read more

Delicate, that is what Sara Jane is. Not delicate in the form of china plates that will shatter if you accidentally bump into it after you've told yourself to stay a good 3 feet away. Delicate in the form of fashion elegance. Word of mouth brought me into this shop that offers quite a bit of carefully selected items that are unique and effortless beauty bunched together in the form of an entire wardrobe. From silky and colorful dresses to flimsy crochet half sweaters that could dress up an off the shoulder dress and make the outfit flawless. Upon walking in I was immediately welcomed with a warm hello and smile, almost immediately followed by a passionate desire to figure out what exactly you are looking for. Loved this, loved it so much I went in with my budget in line and was seriously considering blowing it. The store is small but the layout is set up so that there are more deep colors off along the wall by the entrance. Think blacks, whites and grays. There was a gorgeous red jacket that could spice up a fall night out, not to mention the grey dress towards the back with a somewhat ribbed neck that is ribbed with wound ribbons. Now cruise over to the other side where there are items with a little more color like a muted purple, light browns and teal print dresses. I happened to notice a darling purple and off white print dress that was silky smooth, but my body type is funny and it was a little snug unfortunately. This does not deter me from coming back to this shop though. The jewelry is equally as noteworthy of the clothing and the toned down gold and brushed over silver hoops and chandeliers were tempting but sadly I didn't walk out with a purchase. Walking down on Wells the other day with the bf and spotted this adorable boutique. I popped in and the friendly ladies informed me that they are having their summer sale. This store is well-organized, but unfortunately there were not many extra smalls left on the sales rack. No worries, I still managed to score 2 dresses and some super cute jeans all for $200! You can tell the quality of the clothes here is superb; this is not your forever 21, wear it one time and everything falls apart kind of deal. The sales ladies were very laid back yet attentive. Most of the items here are reasonably priced. I was able to find casual weekend dresses as well as work outfit here. I will be stopping by frequently as they seem to update their inventory quite often. It would be nice if they carry more dresses for petite people like me. read more

My friend and I came here on a sunny Sunday morning. There was one person working who did not bother to even speak with us until we had something in our hands. She didn't check on us while we tried clothes on. The clothes are very expensive and to be honest, prefer my experience at Handle with Care versus this one. My favorite store in Chicago!! Super cute dresses and unique jewelery and accessories at very reasonable prices. They always have a few new things in stock, which can be a tad dangerous (especially since the store is across the street from our apartment). I'm proud (I think) to admit that I've never left this store empty handed!! My latest Sara Jane find was a new brand of jeans (anoname) that fit great and are about half the price of typical premium denim. The owners are really sweet and very helpful - love that they clear off the couch for my husband whenever we walk through the door. They give you a warm welcome when you enter, but they don't push you to buy anything. I love that approach!! read more

Sara Jane is the reason I shop in Chicago! Just returned from a girls weekend in Chicago. I was on a mission for some cute spring looks. Not only was Sara Jane our first stop, it was the only stop necessary. The owner and manager were incredibly helpful and led me (not pushy at all) to some amazing pieces. She even offered to show me all the pieces from a trunk show that had ended earlier in the week and were already boxed up. The jewelry is amazing as well- not the typical stuff you see everywhere. Dress after dress, my jaw dropped. Seriously the most adorable dresses I've seen this spring. Amazing skinny cargos, jeans that are affordable AND cute plus some sexy tops I can actually wear! I have curves and I often avoid boutiques where I think you have to be a size 0 or 2 to find anything. Not the case with Sara Jane. Plus, I really felt their advice was sincere as well. It wasn't the typical "that looks great on you" if something didn't fit well or look good. Trustworthy advice is hard to find- more often people just want to sell you stuff. The owner and her team help you but don't pressure you. They key into your style almost immediately and offer options. I REALLY like the merchandise in this store. What I don't like is the owner. I've shopped here on and off for the past couple years and every single time I've gone in, I've experienced nothing but rude, brassy and quite frankly obnoxious behavior from the owner. I've always overlooked it because they do have a great selection of unique clothes, but I decided to write this review because I just called to get the name of a designer for a dress I liked there, as my husband offered to get it for my birthday. She answered the phone, told me she "doesn't know who makes the dress" and I asked her to please check - to which she replied "why do you need to know the designer of the dress??" - rudely. I was shocked that she wouldn't answer me. She's the owner. She knows who makes the f*ing dress. Secondly, when I asked her to check, why the hell should she care why I wanted to know? Then I told her my husband was coming in and I wanted him to get the right dress blah blah blah - way more than I cared to go into - to which she replied - again, rudely "I'll put it on hold for you - what's your name"? I woud like to say that most of the sales girls I have encountered there have been great. Wish I could say the same for the owner. I will not be shopping here again. read more
