My 19-year-old daughter and I stopped in Sara Jane's on our all-too-infrequent visit to the city. When we came across this adorable shop, we were instantly drawn in. We loved the variety of clothes, bags and jewelry, among other trendy items. The shop reminded me of the unique boutiques in California. My daughter who lives in San Diego was in strong agreement. The best part was interacting with Sara, the owner, who was helpful, fun, and so friendly. I left with an awesome pair of pants and only regret not having bought a purse I kept eyeing. I REALLY like the merchandise in this store. What I don't like is the owner. I've shopped here on and off for the past couple years and every single time I've gone in, I've experienced nothing but rude, brassy and quite frankly obnoxious behavior from the owner. I've always overlooked it because they do have a great selection of unique clothes, but I decided to write this review because I just called to get the name of a designer for a dress I liked there, as my husband offered to get it for my birthday. She answered the phone, told me she "doesn't know who makes the dress" and I asked her to please check - to which she replied "why do you need to know the designer of the dress??" - rudely. I was shocked that she wouldn't answer me. She's the owner. She knows who makes the f*ing dress. Secondly, when I asked her to check, why the hell should she care why I wanted to know? Then I told her my husband was coming in and I wanted him to get the right dress blah blah blah - way more than I cared to go into - to which she replied - again, rudely "I'll put it on hold for you - what's your name"? I woud like to say that most of the sales girls I have encountered there have been great. Wish I could say the same for the owner. I will not be shopping here again. read more

My daughter-in-law and I came upon Sara Jane over the weekend. We were in town from Detroit to visit family. WE FELL IN LOVE!!! The store has something for everyone; all ages. Very cute boutique! They email me all the time about sales they are having and I try to go there a lot to see what they have in that's new and cute. Very unique items and they have great bags, and cute belts. I got this belt with a huge buckle with crushed flowers in the buckle- it sounds weird but I really like it. I love this boutique. I drive by it every day when I drive my daughter to school. The windows keep luring me in. The staff manages that wonderful balance of leaving me alone, and offering me suggestions. They are not pushy - yay! Last time in I didn't even notice the dress that I ended up buying when I looked around. It was the sales woman who saw what I was trying on, and my style, who suggested it too me. I like stores that carry a variety of styles and product lines. At Sara Jane I can find clothes that work with my look and body type. Most items are typical boutique prices. I'd say $50-150. The staff is friendly and helpful but never pushy (which is a big deal to me). I happen to work down the street and love stopping in when I have time. This was my first Well's Street Art Fair and my first time in Sara Jane's. Sara Jane's was a saving grace this past weekend and a great find. What a godsend. The weather warmed up much more than expected! Sara was offering complimentary air conditioning :-) and 20% off the entire store. I was able to grab a cami at a great price and get a wee respite from the heat. The woman that helped me was hysterical and gave me a great laugh. I loved the service and the offer of something cold to drink. Considering how crowded the store was I thought the offer was a nice attention to detail (namely my needs at the moment). Clearly, I was a little too hot (i.e. too gross) to try on outfits however, I liked what I saw. I'll definitely be back, not only because I liked the merchandise but because I also enjoyed the banter with the staff. read more

I attended an after hours shopping event here last week that my friend bid on through a charity. Whenever I attend events like this, I always plan to purchase something in support of the store or business. I ended up finding a gray sweater with faux leather and had to have it, purchase price was $125, great! The thing that I didn't enjoy about this experience was the attitude and unpleasant comments made by the owner throughout the event. When several ladies that didn't purchase items went to retrieve their coats from behind the register, the owner said "You didn't find anything?" in a condescending tone and also told my friend checking out "Nobody shopped." There were roughly 20 ladies in attendance and about 8 purchased items large and small during the event (6:30-8:00 pm). I'd say that's pretty good for an after hours event that you donated to a charity, so I'm not sure what all the rude undertones and comments were about. We were just a group of women, celebrating our friend's birthday, and looking forward to checking out what appeared to be a great boutique. Overall, the tone of this place did not make for a fun or comfortable evening. I love my sweater, but will not be supporting someone that treats customers like this. read more

This boutique is amazing!!! Let's just say, I've never yelped before but had to in order to tell others about this great boutique. I discovered Sara Jane just before Summer and fell in love. Everything is so cute and reasonably priced. Plus, they have a really good sale rack. My last shopping experience there was unbelievable! The sales associate helped me find several nice pieces for Fall. She took her time with me and helped me decide on the pieces that I would really need versus just trying to sell me everything in the store (which is easy to do because everything in there is great!) Did I mention I received top notch, first class service? Since I wandered in the shop while my bicycle was getting serviced next door, I really didn't have an intention of buying clothes because I wouldn't have a way to bring the merchandise home on my bike. Well, the owner and associate offered to steam my purchases and deliver them to my home! Not only did I get great service while in the store, they went well beyond my expectations! Sara Jane is by far one of my favorite boutiques in Chicago. The quality of the clothes is exceptional and price point is reasonable. I no longer live in Chicago but I make it a point to visit Sara Jane everytime in town. The owner is a pleasure to work with, she has a great since of style and remembers me by name each time I come in. This type of personal attention is always greatly appreciated. Not only does she remember me but she also remembers my "personal style" and always has the perfect suggestions as soon as I walk in the door. It's fantastic to see a woman owned business not only surviving but thriving in today's economy. This review is LONG overdue but I needed some time to cool off after the incident. What began as a fun shopping experience months ago, QUICKLY changed to a VERY negative experience overall. I expressed some discontentment with the quality of the dress that was purchased for me as the dress didn't hold up well after washing it ONE time. The issue was resolved; HOWEVER, the lack of professionalism that was displayed during the encounter left a terrible taste in my mouth to the point that I will NEVER shop here again. When there is an issue with a customer, don't make it personal; keep it between you and that customer. Don't harass the customer's brother who walks his dog by your store or discuss the issue with your family member who also happens to be a friend of that customer. This type of behavior does NOTHING for customer service. Additionally, when that customer returns to the store to resolve the matter (AT YOUR ENCOURAGMENT/SUGGESTION), the absolute LAST thing that customer wants to see is you (as the owner of the establishment) roll your eyes when she walks in. What happened to delivering service with a smile? WOW, all the best to you in your future transactions and encounters. I'm sure you'll be DELIGHTED to know that I won't come back to your store again. read more

Yet another encounter with the exceptionally rude staff. Door was propped wide open so I went in. Since the lights we're off i asked one of the women who was moving boxes around if they were open. she literally scowled at me like i was the enemy and said "no". I had a good shopping day today. After a friend told me about Sara Jane, I decided to stop by and see what she was raving about. They have some really unique pieces - trendy, but not too trendy where you can't wear it past one season. The sales people are very helpful - one of the ladies picked out a few things that she thought would look good on me and my body type. I would have never picked those pieces out myself because she was telling me that they look much different when you try it on vs. looking at it on the hanger. I came out with a couple of really interesting sweaters. One is really versatile, and I could dress it up or dress it down. The other one is a cool greyish-blue color that you don't usually see. I'm glad that I stopped by. The best part is that they are doing a promotion where if you spend more than $125 (I think that was the amount), you get a $25 gift card in the mail. I'm down for that! I just discovered this Old Town boutique. A friend told me about it, otherwise I never would have known about it. I walked out with a dress, top & jewelry. I know I'll get lots of wear from the items. The clothes are mid priced and it was nice to see brands that you don't find in every other boutique on Southport or Armitage.
