I usually don't like chicken teriyaki, but today my gf ordered it for herself, I tried and and ended up eating it all. The food here is totally worth it, at least for the bento box that we ordered. They really packed it, so I was very very stuffed after eating it. Another great thing, quick quick quick, I literally placed the order, the platter got passed down and then bam it was ready. I've been to a few Sarku's in my lifetime, but there's something special about this one. Typically at Sarku, it's pretty similar to a fast food restaurant. You order at the counter, someone will come out the back with a bento box sized plate of chicken teriyaki and rice (or something else, but this is probably the most popular order). However at THIS Sarku, even in a mall food court, it feels more authentic. The chefs cook the chicken right in front of you, and give you portions that are big enough that make you feel like you're getting your money's worth. This may be one of the most popular fast food restaurants in Staten Island; whenever I go, the line extends well past the end of the storefront. The main complaint is the service. They might as well just throw the food at you. The workers are unfriendly and harried. They hand you a folded brown paper bag in which you are supposed to pack the food yourself. This is in a mall where people are already holding bags from shopping. Worse though is that the food containers and pick up area are covered in spots of cooking oil. It's a mess and Just asking for a napkin turns into an argument. I went there twice and both times there were people in line having negative experiences. Contrast this with "Bistro Thai" which is also in the same mall where the workers are pleasant and it is a positive experience. Sarku Japan however is exactly the kind of place that makes you not want to leave your house. Have been going here since I was a teenager. They are still great eats, however not as great as they used to be. Now they are the most popular eatery in the food court (and the only edible food) and that is to their detriment. The lines get long but go very fast and that's the problem. They take your order very quickly and don't even give you your utensils now. And the food is now produce en mass, reducing the quality of the preparation. They must put heroin in the teriaki sauce though, since I will swear on everything I love that it's the best I've ever had. I will keep on coming back as long as they keep up the good work. This is one of your typical hibachi type restaurants you'll find in any food court of any mall in the US. The prices are dirt cheap, it fills your belly, and the food is delicious! As an American, I find it appalling that someone can work behind the counter and not know how to speak or understand English. Although I shouldn't expect much from a chain inside a mall, I do think that being able to understand the words "two orders of chicken teriyaki" said three times , is important. This was the second time in a month that I had waited on a long line with my son, in my arms and didn't pay attention to the receipt. Except today really rubbed me the wrong way and I will not be eating at any of these chains again. I waited with my son in my arms and he was extremely cranky, so yes I was distracted and placed my credit card and recipt in my wallet straight away. I waited after receiving my first and said I was waiting for a second to which the man cooking said " then where recipt" so I pulled it out and handed it to him,not thinking she had once again not understood "two orders". He then proceeded to throw the recipt back at me and said " this say one go to back of line order again" at this point i was beyond embraced. I said to him" once again I told her two orders can I give you the cash and you can ring me up since the line is long and I just ordered?" The man responds with " an you go back to back of line with money give to us again" I was disgusted. They are there because of our money. Disgusting that not only can they not speak well enoug English to get an order right, but then to speak that way to a customer, who honestly was not trying to get over(obviously I handed them the recipt) is rediculous.
