I'm a barbecue hound and I live in Athens, but somehow had never been to the Saucehouse. We engaged them to cater my daughter's wedding this past weekend knowing the reputation, but short of actually tasting the food, so it was fingers crossed! Let me tell you they absolutely blew us away! It was a feast of delicious, moist, smoked just-right pulled pork and white meat chicken. On the side was the best mac n cheese I've ever tasted, baked beans made from scratch and a fantastic cole slaw, buns and rolls. The meat was complemented by their signature sauces. We had some big appetites, about 130 people eating and we had mounds of food left over to take home. The catering staff, three young ladies were sweet, friendly and worked tirelessly to serve our guests. At clean-up time they went above and beyond to help us. And the crazy part, the price was the best quote we received. I honestly don't know how they do it for what they charged us. I can't say enough good about the food AND the catering service of the Saucehouse. I highly recommend them for your event. Great bark on smoky flavored pulled pork. Hash n rice was delicious and the best I've had this west of South Carolina. Green bean casserole was heaven sent and the best I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Big basket of tater tots was well received. Service was agreeable and the joint almost too clean to be a bbq joint. Large menu had it all... chicken, ribs, brisket, stew n hash with meat combos to fill the hungriest of patrons. We tried this restaurant when we came in with my daughter for UGA orientation. It was close to our hotel and looked like a cool place from the outside. We were tired from the day's events and just wanted a sit-down meal. First of all, we were a little confused about the layout of the restaurant entrance. The parking was in the back and you felt like you were walking in the back door. There were two entrances to eating areas or you could walk directly onto the patio. There were no signs saying to seat yourself or wait on a hostess and no one that greeted us. I assumed that one side was the restaurant and one side was a bar. When we walked in it was to order at the counter and was set up like a cafeteria line. The menu was a little awkward to understand at first and the teenagers behind the counter were of no help. I decided to try and keep it simple and ordered a stuffed bbq potato. Baked potato, with butter and sour cream, shredded pork on top and then cheese. All the sides were served out of warming dishes and just looked sad so I skipped those. Upon trying to eat, the food was barely warm. It wasn't even hot enough to warm the cheese when mixed in. The sauces had a decent flavor but they were very funny(not what I'm used to in Georgia but ok). As we sat there eating we were also confused because we kept seeing a worker going back and forth with trays of food out across the porch to the other building entrance that we assumed was the bar. So I'm still wondering was it a sit-down and order style restaurant on that side. There was no way to know. I even looked for signage that we might have missed when we walked in. I wanted to really like this restaurant because it had such a cool presence from the street but was severely disappointed overall. read more

Our office caters lunch in for the employees on the last day of the month. Today we were treated to Saucehouse BBQ. I am not a BBQ fan but today I became one! I just finished my second plate of food! It was so delicious! The sauces were amazing! I tried the Eastern NC Vinegar Sauce and the House Sauce. The salad and pulled pork must have crack on it because we all could not get enough! This place is huge. We stopped in to check in out. Servers were friendly and helpful and courteous. The menu was a little pricey but the food was great. The green bean casarole was fantastic, the pulled pork was cooked just right. The sauce bar has something for everyone from hot to mild, vinegar and horseradish sauces from different states. There's plenty of parking and lots of big screen TV'S to watch the game or something else. The patio is a wrap around and features beanbag toss to entertain you and the kids. There's a full bar separate from the dining room with fountains and seating for eating or casual get together with friends. Pets are welcome in the outside bar area and TV. Serendipity brought us here for breakfast. Good time to enjoy a few minutes of quiet on a Saturday morning. Food was really good. Grits were perfectly seasoned. I got the Hot Mess with brisket (eggs, brisket, sausage gravy, cheese and jalapenos on an opened biscuitll. One of my favorite breakfasts ever! Athens needs a good BBQ joint and this place has the looks to meet the need, but man the serving line needs some work. The building is awesome, but I walked in at 2:15pm and it took 40 minutes to get from the door to the cash register. While I was eating, I counted 13 empty tables, but the line was all the way to the door. Been open five days and they were out of brunswick stew, baked potatoes, ribs and cheerwine. And why the heck are they a Pepsi joint in the heart of Athens? Come on man, Coca Cola Baby!!! Trying to run it like a chipotle where you create your own plate, but the process has too many delays. Shelf for the servers is too narrow and they have to focus on making sure trays don't fall instead of putting food on the plate. The poor kid trying to get the nachos into the basket was using worthless tongs. You got gloves on, use your hands man. The drink machine is tucked into an alcove and it's too crowded. House Sauce ok, but there is no top on the Carolina style, so you can't shake it up. Sauces are on two bars. Put some sauce on the tables, so I can squirt it on my plate. Speaking of plates, they don't have any, just baskets and styrofoam to-go boxes. Get some plates and move the line. I had brisket and instead of slicing it, they scooped it out of a stainless tub. More like pot roast with a smokey flavor. A friend had pork and it didn't have any flavor. I thought this was going to be the place, but no such luck. They have a bar for 21 and up, going to give that a shot next weekend. I hope they make it, and I hope they change it up. I think they are trying to be a little too fancy. read more

I'll get to the point with this review. The restaurant itself is a nice place to eat. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food however was pretty average. Unfortunately, the 'cue here is par for the course for Athens. It's good for an occasional bbq fix, but it's so average. The plus side is, there are tons of tasty sauces to drown the meat in. The mac & cheese was the only dish that really stood out to me. If you're not a bbq snob, you'll probably like it. I rate 3/5. Great BBQ stop in Athens. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, and the food is delicious. It's not a normal BBQ place, you can choose the "vessel" you want your meat on (taco, bun, potato, roll). I got the Tofu Taco (the Taco shells are vegan), and was able to add all the toppings I wanted. I will be back! read more

The food is mediocre. The bread/buns are given to you cold. The portions were small for what we paid for. They were out of most of their sides. It's a fairly new restaurant so I guess they are still experiencing "growing pains". The best thing about this place is the atmosphere and the courtyard. read more

Have been eating at this place for a few years. We book in advance for our dinner group witch usually has 20 to 30 dinners. We change restaurants every week with a 10 week rotation. This past Week we told them we would be coming on Wed. They never told us they had a large party booked and there would be NO PARKING. Shame on them as they are just greedy. If I were to choose my last meal I would choose bbq. I have had some amazing bbq so I am pretty picky. The bbq here was just ok...sorry to say it's not anything special. I got their ribs and a baked potato with their cheese sauce.... Which is pretty yummy and a side of their collards. My husband got pulled pork on nachos with the cheese sauce. Overall the meat was a bit dry... And not as flavorful as I expected. They have an odd concept of choosing a meat and then choosing a vessel.... So you can get your meat on a potato on nachos on bread on bun on tacos.... You get the point.... They have an ok assortment of sauces... Like 10 or so... Quite a bit spicy..but decent if you like a bit of a kick. Overall a good Athens bbq place... Just don't expect that " this is the best bbq I've ever had" experience.... Saucehouse catered our son's wedding reception last weekend, and they did a phenomenal job! The food was outstanding! Many of the guests said it was the best brisket they'd ever had, and the chicken, mac & cheese, Georgia hash, and salad were all absolutely delicious. The servers did a great job of recommending the best sauces for each meat, they kept the buffet full and clean, they packed everything up for us when dinner was over. The whole process from the tasting to the payments to the final count to the actual day of the wedding couldn't have gone more smoothly. Worked with Mary Beth at the Athens location to cater our tailgate for 120 folks. We were out of towners and first timers to Athens so we needed a lot of guidance. They were able to to provide a 10x20 tent to cover the food and serving area as it was a warm day and didn't want the food in the hot sun for 4 hours. Worked with me on the menu and flexible on the headcount up until 2 days before hand. She along with our game day crew of Kyle and Noah were fantastic. They set up in no time and all the food was great. Called me on the day off to check in. All the guests raved about the food and the service. I would almost give this 3.5 stars. Overall food was good. It will be easier to order once I've been there a couple of times. Being that it was my first time I was a bit confused by the fact that there were options on the serving line that were not on the menu. Thinking I had my mind made up, I set to the line and then had to hastily make adjustments while ordering in the line. What we liked: Fried green tomatoes were delicious, but having sat on the bar they were a bit soggy. Brisket was tasty and moist. Pork was also tasty. Slaw was decent, a little sweet Side salad was just lettuce. Sauce selection was good. What could be improved: Nacho chips were thick and hard. Nacho cheese was meh, certainly not worth the calories. Would pass on these all together. Menu was too diverse. Stick to the BBQ basics and make tweaks to improve. It was our first time here, visiting Athens from out of town and all i can say is WOW!!! The whole experience was top notch! It was fun to pick out and try so many different sauces to put on our meat, but it was truly the atmosphere that made it so much more than just eating out at another restaurant! The staff and owner personally welcomed us and made us feel right at home! The kids enjoyed playing bean bags out on the deck and swinging on the deck after eating our meal! And the deserts!! Amazing! We aren't typically desert people but being from out of town wanted to try something peach and decided to try the peach cobbler! The owner explained to us, everything is made from scratch in house even the whip cream! It was so good we also tried the banana pudding and bread pudding! For as much money as it cost to build a location like this it would seem the sauces would have a diverse taste. But they dont. Sugar or Vinegar that is the choice all under a different label. I would give this place 4 stars, but they have really strange operating hours. They're closed on Monday and Tuesday. The quality of the BBQ is up to par with Shanes Rib Shack. Saucehouse was delicious! Very friendly people and nice atmosphere for a mid-afternoon lunch. The food was pretty tasty as well - we really enjoyed the barbecue pork! I had the barbecue pork with a baked potato as the "vessel" (they were happy to put the pork on the side so I could enjoy the potato by itself, with tons of free topping options). I also had the green bean casserole which was tasty as well as the Mac and cheese - the Mac was pretty greasy, but apparently other batches are better and we just didn't have the best batch at the time. Not a deal breaker. We brought our food over to the bar area where there were many good drink options. We also had a wonderful time with the bartender/assistant manager, Cristina! And in my opinion it was over priced for what you got. The last time we ordered in and the brisket was so salty it was inedible.
