My mother, afflicted with dementia, spent the past 3 months of her life being cared for by the people at Saunders House. It was the very best care she ever had, and I can recommend them without even the slightest hesitation. To a person, from the custodians to the registered nurses, everyone was capable, kind, professional, accommodating and absolutely focused on giving my mother the very best care. For that I cannot ever be grateful enough. Saunders House is an "older" building, last decorated in the 1970s. It does not smell of potpourri nor does it have fake Chippendale furniture. Some things may be worn or dinged up. I have learned while caring for my mother that this matters less than you think The facility is clean, the dementia unit is super-secure, and they take amazing care of their people. She never once fell, never had a sore, was always clean, well dressed, her hair was always brushed nicely and they always made sure she was happy and content. They also really understand the needs of the dementia patient. For instance: At meals, they play upbeat music loudly. Why? Because they learned having a certain 'beat' helps their patients feed themselves better. They asked for preschool toys to be donated because the patients are at this cognitive level and enjoy them. They play only old movies and Andy Griffith on the TV (fun to see the residents enjoying the Andy Griffith theme by the way). They have a piano player who comes in to play old standards. We were the recipients of so many kindnesses, from the nurse who brewed coffee for us from her own personal pot she brought in for herself to the receptionist who held me so tightly and told me how sad she was that my mother was passing to the aides who kept my mother clean and talked with her animatedly, telling her what they were doing and joking with her. Don't be fooled by places that look like the Ritz. This is great care, and I would highly recommend them for anyone who has a family member in need of Alzhieimer's or Dementia care. This is a nonprofit facility, it's a skilled nursing facility, and they accept Medicaid. read more

- HIPAA VIOLATORS!, TRUST! Staff leaves Patients sitting in urine, feces for hours & hours. Food is barely edible/legal. CNA's are from subpar Agencies w/ nasty attitudes. These "nurses" were aggressive and confrontational, Nurse "K", (she refused to tell her name) lied to my Insurance company and set me up to be discharged from pure envy, jealousy and hate. She is aggressive, obese & bitter. I'm medical fragile (back surgery 1/15/25) & she was retaliating because I had to call 911 for EMT's because "Nurse K" refused to respond to my Bell in minute 18 of heart infarction. Had 2 go 2 Lankenau Emergency Room on Xmas!. She was ignoring me on purpose, They ignore all shouts, screams or request for Nurses to come right away...They just smacked their lips, kissed their teeth or shrug!. MEAN! Ratio 1 to 15 for CNA's?!!! with 1 Lazy inept, Supervising Nurse. PLEASE find another place, Your family is NOT SAFE AT SAUNDERS. Praise God I made it out alive. I highly recommend Saunders House Assisted Living in Wynnewood, PA. I was given a tour by the admissions Director, Carol C, who had a people personality; she appeared very sincere and caring. I was given a facility tour and noticed the occupants seemed happy and free. The place was clean and decorated for the season. My Dad is there, and I could not have found a better place for him. He has bonded with his roommate, although nothing will ever be like home. Due to his health, it is an excellent environment for him to participate in. There are activities, and the staff have him up and dressed for his daily routines most mornings. I loved the piano in two recreation halls and the occupants there who played so beautifully. Disgusting, appalling, and vile. My father is a recent stroke victim, and we entrusted Saunders House for his care as he faces the battle of his life to recover from his stroke. Firstly, they claim that due to COVID, ALL VISITORS ARE BANNED. You mean to tell me that my 70+ year old mother is NOT allowed to even so much as SEE my father face to face, to help him through the most traumatic event of his life?!? My 70+ year old father currently has full right-side paralysis and aphasia, how could he be expected to use technology to "facetime" his family members? Secondly, they were COMPLETELY INEPT at communicating his progress and status. My mother was kept in the dark THE ENTIRE TIME. If you don't call them within a specific window, their voicemail tells you to call back tomorrow. You aren't even able to leave a message! Fed up with the NEGLECT, we transferred him home, less than 4 miles away. In what world is it appropriate to deliver my father, on the day of his release, to his home at CLOSE TO 10PM AT NIGHT?!?! WHAT WERE THEY DOING ALL DAY?! And, on top of that, the first time we changed him, we discovered that he had DRIED FECES on his person. He developed a UTI and we had to rush him BACK to the hospital. So, they weren't wiping this man, either?!? God forbid I'm ever in a position that I need to go to Saunders House. I'd be better off in a wheelchair with a dented wheel, abandoned on the side of a highway, with a sharp stick in my hand! read more

The worst place the aides and nurses are uncaring and nasty their doctors are less than helpful and not up to Medicare standards

If you're looking for attitude and incompetence, all wrapped up under one roof, then Saunders House is the place for you. I was an in-patient at Saunders House for nearly 3 months while rehabbing my legs. And, I must say, their Rehab personnel are outstanding. On a scale of 1 to 5, their Rehab is a solid 5 star. They take their work seriously, care about working one on one to help achieve measurable results. I can't say enough about their OT and PT personnel that worked with me 5 - 6 days a week. Their Rehab personnel are not employed by Saunders House. They are employed by an outside agency, which is why I believe their program is so awesome. Most of the other personnel at Saunders House, including Nursing, Nursing Management, Nursing Assistants are all disgusting. They all have attitude, lack people skills, lazy and annoyed. There are a few individuals that stand out as good caring people, but the vast majority are horrible. Asking for fresh water takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, if they remember, at all. And the annoyed look on their face, tells it all. They don't want to be here, they don't want to serve and all they care about is a pay check. Nursing management, exhibit attitude, as well. Personnel on the 3-11pm shift are, without a doubt, the worst. On several occasions, my evening medications were not available. Reason? They ran out and decided to reorder. Any competent organization would have checks and balances in place to insure medications are re-ordered well in advance. But, not Saunders House. Their MO is when the medication runs out, reorder it. On those occasions where my medications were not available, the only response I get from the Nurse is a shrug of the shoulders with an attitude like, it's on order, period. Towels and linens are in short supply. Asking an Assistant to make my bed usually becomes an uphill battle. Food service at Saunders House is poor. The quality of the food is, for the most part, terrible. Soups are watered down with loads and loads of salt. Breakfast omelets are usually burnt. They usually forget to deliver part of the order. Calling down to Food Service, sometimes is impossible to get through and when someone does answer, they're usually annoyed that you're even calling. Upper management visited my room on 2 separate occasions to get my feedback about my overall experiences. The individual left her card and told me to reach out to her with any issues. Later, during my stay, I started to have issues and when I telephoned her, of course, she just blew me off by nevere returning my call. Typical MO at Saunders. I could go on and on with various other issues, but venting my frustration would not serve me any good. It is what it is. Does upper management care? Probably, but is in no position to carry out the rampant attitude and incompetence that wreaks throughout the facility. Infrastructure at Saunders House is fractured. I would not recommend this facility for anyone looking for in-patient rehabilitation. Their attitude and incompetence just doesn't cut it for me. read more

I have a Spiritual Mother here at Saunders House and I find it to be a clean facility. The staff is very nice and one day I brought my dinner so I could eat with her and they made it possible. She's kept very well and her living quarters is clean. read more

So very happy to have read all of these reviews bc we were trying to get my mom in here simply because of convenience, but had forgotten all of the bad experiences we had here during a previous visit. My mom had become sick needing to be hospitalized. They said it wasn't necessary. Made an appointment with her doc but when he heard how she was bresthing, he said to take her to ER. She ended up being admitted with pneumonia and stayed for 2 weeks. They wouldn't let her back in bc they said we "kidnapped her" Arrogant, insensitive, and uninformed best describes most of management and definitely admissions, yet there are a few good nurses (Jackie), CNA's (James) and others. read more

As I continue my journey through aging I reflect on the beautiful life I've lived . However because of a recent unexpected illness I had to come to Saunders Rehabilitation and Nursing Home . What started out as a pleasant experience has turned into a nightmare. With the takeover of a new corporation we the patients are experiencing a decrease in staffing, lack of care , cut back in supplies, low quality food, and the creation of a hostile environment which has resulted in high turnover of staff. More patients are falling because of unanswered call bells. read more

***They DO NOT protect the residents from COVID*** My uncle was sent to Saunder's House for rehab twice after being released from Lankenau Hospital. I called and spoke to someone (Marjorie or someone with an M name) to specifically ask about their COVID plan. She told me when arriving, patients are tested and put in a separate area until the test comes back negative. I then asked how the workers were monitored. She said they did temperature checks. My uncle was rushed to the hospital Friday, October 12 for respiratory distress. He had COPD but I wasn't worried because it happened a few weeks before and the Drs. at Lankenau stabilized him and sent him back to Saunder's. This time the Dr. told me he was positive for COVID which he got at Saunder's House!! Unfortunately, he did not survive. If I could sue them I would...already looked into it! read more

My mother recently spent a couple weeks here for rehab. First, she found the food inedible. But worse, the staff were inattentive to her toileting needs. She was reliant on them and they failed her horribly, causing trauma. I am aware that these places may be severely understaffed and the staff, too, severely underpaid. I suppose in this case this must truly be true, because she was not able to get assistance-- not only did this cause trauma and discomfort but it worsened her medical condition considerably. If I could give a rating of zero stars, I would. This facility was horrible. My father was there for a little over three weeks after being in the hospital for sepsis. My father had diarrhea for the entirety of his stay there. He notified them of the situation, and he often had to be cleaned up by the CNA's, so they were very much aware of his condition. Early on in his stay, I contacted the social worker to let her know of all of my concerns, including them not treating him for his diarrhea, the fact that he was not eating the awful food and needed some additional nutritional supports, the fact that he was not receiving consistent physical or occupational therapy, as well as a host of other things. The social worker reached out to the heads of all of the departments with whom we had an issue. Everyone followed up with me rather quickly with the exception of the doctor, with whom I played phone tag for at least a week and a half. When I finally got him on the telephone, he acknowledged that he saw that my father was dehydrated during his visit three days prior to our call, but he wanted to wait another three days to see if the situation improved before he would send him out to the hospital for IV fluids. I insisted that my 80 year old father be tranferred to the hospital immediately. The doctor said that he would call the nurse's station to arrange for the transport to the hospital. When the nurse came into my father's room, she asked me if I had been there all day (I would generally work remotely from his bedside some days out of the week)? When I told her that I had been there for several hours, she stated "öh, I guess I was not where I was supposed to be" indicating that she knew that she had not stepped foot inside of his room for all of the time that I was there. The dehydration caused his blood pressure to drop significantly and caused some kidney issues. He got another infection as a result of the dehydration as well. All of this happened roughly three weeks ago and he is back in the hospital again. DO NOT, under any circumstances, send your loved ones to Saunders House. The care is beyond sub-par and my father complained of CNA's who were rude and insisted that he do things which he was physically unable to do because of his condition. This is a horrible place that does not provide good patient care or rehabilitation. DO NOT leave anyone that you love at Saunders House!!!!!! read more

I went to visit my favorite uncle who has been residing here for some time. I like that it's located on the grounds of lankenau hospital so the area is pretty nice. The nursing home is spacious and it was neat and clean when I arrived. The nurses that helps my uncle was friendly and knowledgeable on explaining my uncle's condition and how they're helping him. When I asked my aunt how she felt about the place, she said she really liked it and felt comfortable with my uncle getting care here and this is coming from my aunt who has moved my uncle from a few nursing homes d/t unsatisfactory conditions. In regards to long term care I would recommend Saunders house. read more

DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE send your loved one here!!!! I give this place -3000 stars!! They did not take care of my mom when she was there. Because of covid we couldn't see her teeth because she had a mask on. Now that she can take her mask off, her teeth were horrifying! My moms teeth were so nice people thought they were fake. Now her teeth are turning black and her gums and lips are swollen. Her heels of her feet are in horrible shape as if no one has cleaned her feet. I was visiting one day and talking to one of the workers and she was talking about her mom. I asked her if her mom was at Saunders house and she screamed out HELL NO!!!! She tried to clean it up and say that she didn't mean to say it like that. They said she wasn't eating her food and wanted to put her on HOSPICE!!! I went up there and she ate EVERYTHING off her plate! They basically tried to kill my mom! Now that she is in. A new facility, she told the CNA "don't hit me!" What the hell!!! So now I find out that they were hitting her!!! Please! DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE THERE! If they are there take them out IMMEDIATELY!!! read more

I had my mom here in the dementia unit. They took great care of her despite the fact that she was less than cooperative. The staff was caring and the building was clean and well kept. Don't let anyone you love go to Saunders House - at least not the Rehabilitation floor. One nurse is really, really good, but she can't be on every shift. The head nurse on day shift is good. The rest of them can't tell a doctor when the patient last had a catheter changed. They kept giving her medication for constipation when she had diarrhea. She'd refuse it and they'd still try to sneak it in. Nurses removed dressings - twice - after surgeons ordered that they shouldn't be removed. The head nurse on the evening shift explicitly ignored instructions about how to handle the situation, simply because she could not believe that the patient and family member might know something that she did not know. When she realize her mistake, she didn't apologize for making a mistake, but for "what had to be done," except that it didn't have to be done - she wouldn't listen to what should and should not be done, even though I told her that I had the surgical resident on the other line. After her insincere apology, she demanded that my family member accept her apology sincerely. What a piece of work! My family member is still traumatized, months later. The therapy department is a joke. Almost everyone who works there is an assistant. PTA means Physical Therapy ASSISTANT. OTA means Occupational Therapy ASSISTANT. Some are good, and are caring, but they need more training. Patients are set on a task and then left alone - not nearly enough one-on-one work. The director makes promises and then hides so you can't follow up. They use Frankenstein wheelchairs put together from the parts of old, dead wheelchairs. The Social Worker manager tells bald faced lies about wheelchair delivery dates and locations, and about discussions with the delivery company - and it's all recorded on tape. While their hands may be tied by Medicare rules, they don't say that - they pretend they'll do what you want and then pretend that the delivery company made a mistake. Then they schedule the delivery company to deliver a wheelchair to your home at a time when you told them you'd be at the doctor. The food is abysmal. Lunch is reasonable for an institution, but it's the only cooked meal of the day. Most people don't eat their main meal at lunchtime. Breakfast is around 3 choices - the same three choices every day. The only eggs are hard boiled eggs. No breakfast style eggs. No oatmeal - just cream of wheat. Dinner is sandwiches and burgers, every night. And they wonder why my loved one didn't eat and lost weight? She ate fine after she left. read more

Not an acute care facilty. They do not monitor patients adequately. Forgot to put Moms oxygen on, hooked Mom up to empty oxygen tanks, think they can treat Congestive Heart Failure without a trip to the hospital, Delayed Moms physical therapy for weeks and weeks because they did not think she would ever walk.(After I insisted they gave therapy and Mom walked 100 feet down the hall with a walker). If you need oxygen on any other floor beside fl 2 it's an issue. They have machines that don't work. Refused to call for an ambulance when it was needed yntil threatened. Mom caught pneumonia there as well because everyone in the place was coughing but no one was wearing masks. i caught it as well. Mom was found unresponsive and wound up back on the ventilator because of their carelessness. I repeatedly asked for an xray which was refused. Waste of time being there. Medicare 100 days used with no results and Mom almost died there twice. Don't go there if you are really sick. They cannot handle Acute at all. We later wound up at another facility that was a million times better. How is this place still in business? read more

Avoid this place like the plague. You cannot grow here. Lots of CNA's were laid of because of pay being to high after being employees for 10+years, and new hires were brought in at lower rates just so they wouldn't have to continue to pay their currents. read more

The Staff is warm and friendly with plenty of access to Mom. Mom gets plenty of social interaction she was not getting at home. The cost is supplemented by Medicare or Medicaid but she'll only be there a short time and go home read more

My mother was a patient at Saunders House while recovering from a major surgery. The care she received was outstanding and the staff were very kind, accommodating and helpful. Any questions or issues we had were attended to in a timely fashion. I would definitely recommend Saunders House to friends and family and have already done so.
