I had Bonnie for my first time first aid class which was mandatory for my job. I wasn't going to make a review but I just couldn't stop thinking about how fun she made a simple first aid class. I can't lie, I was prepared to just be in and out but when I tell you she took her time on explaining, showing, and sharing her our experiences I would truly sit in any class she taught! CPR. First aid! They are both vital skills to know what to do in the case of an emergency. Between the two I have been rectified at least 16 times. Most of the classes are dull and BORING! Usually some control freak that wants to scare you and ride you a$$ while you're trying to focus. Not this time. Today I had the pleasure of attending a Safe-a-Life course. Based out of El Cajon, Vicki and Chris have a friendly, funny and outgoing team ready to assist and guide you throughout the session. Poor Chris. She was our go to. "Chris, call 911. Go get the AED and come back!" Imagine 77 voices simultaneously blurting in unison. Each time she would eagerly act her part like it was the first time. What a terrific team player. Bonnie did a remarkable job keeping us entertained and informed throughout the day with her comical humor. We were taught everything in an multi-sensory fashion where you were eager to understand. Imagine being in a room of actual professionals, many retired that include retired fire captains, nurses and educators. The entire team was there to make sure we understood it all. It seems they continue to create new updated videos with the staff actually starring in a few. I have to say I'm definitely impressed with the easy handout. Wow! It's clear and they simplified the task to find whatever you need or weren't sure you did. Finally a book I think the rest could get help from who haven't ever been certified. Thanks so much! No wonder they have such high ratings. Right now I'm good for two years, but for once I look forward to renewing my certification. I bet you will too! I work for the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA and I have had the pleasure of working with the Save-A-Life instructors for the last 5 weeks to have our "Leaders In Training" CPR and First Aid certified. Bonnie and Inge have been stellar working with our groups of kids ages 12-16, making the classes fun, interesting, and age-appropriate. I also personally learned a lot from these classes. I have been CPR/First Aid certified for 11 years and I can't say I ever remember being taught some of the things they go over in the Save-A-Life courses. A few days ago I was able to successfully and confidently perform the Heimlich maneuver on a family member as a result of Bonnie's amazing teaching! This CPR and First Aid class was great! I was dreading going to renew my certifications and had been putting it off for as long as I could- last thing that you want to do is sit in a classroom on a sunny Saturday SD morning/afternoon! However, if you have to, I would highly recommend sitting in this classroom! I had actually forgotten to even register ahead of time and ended up just showing up for the class- Vicki was wonderful and even though the class was full, she still let me attend the classes that day. Chris was a fantastic teacher and made the class as fun as it possibly could have been. It was like being at a comedy show! She is a great instructor, providing us with detailed information that was easy to understand, and was great at answering any of our questions. The class size was small and intimate, and we each got to practice CPR compressions and mouth-to-mouth on adult and infant dummies with an SD firefighter (Gabe, who was awesome as well!). Also, we got a take-home instruction manual in case we forget any of the material we learned. read more

VERY IMPRESSED! NOT ALL SCHOOLS ARE CREATED EQUAL! This retired Fire Chief has created a Fun, Interesting, Curriculum that I will not dread going back to for renewals like I have in the past with other schools. The staff was happy, friendly and warm. The room was large, air conditioned and clean and she has filmed her own movies to go along with the lecture. Each one of us had our own infant and adult manikins to work with on tables so we could move through practices quickly, rather than having to take turns like other schools have you do. There was also a lot of very important and interesting information given to us that I greatly appreciated which was not given to us at the last school I attended in La Mesa. 2 years ago at the "other school" I had to repeatedly step in to answer (from my EMT training) questions the instructors DID NOT KNOW, or had left out. It was very irritating. I don't like being a know it all or being put in that position but the students were asking vital life or death questions that had to be addressed! Bonnie our teacher @ Save a Life Educators has been doing this for 15 years so she has this down and has a great sense of humor. Vicki the owner is very upbeat, positive and attentive and you can tell she puts everything into this business to ensure professionalism and efficiency which is something I can really appreciate. I never felt like I was falling asleep once in this class which is saying a lot for an 8 hour course on a Saturday after working a hard long week of running a daycare. Just to give you some prospective of what that school in La Mesa was like in comparison - it had a TINY room and the instructor was a very young ambulance driver who had been up all night working. We sat on SUPER hard chairs for 8 HOURS. I calculated how much money the school made per class x several weekends, and it is enough to buy better chairs believe me. The rent on that dinky place must be pretty low. My bedroom is about the same size. We were falling asleep due to the lack of inspiration and wisdom from this very tired, sweet young man who was trying to get through the long course. We had to kneel on the floor to take turns with the manikins and a LOT of people were doing the CPR wrong over and over who were NEVER corrected! These are people who are supposed to be saving lives of children who walked out certified! A couple days later we came back for another course there and the owner was saying terrible things about our last instructor out loud to our new instructor for the class to hear. She was cold and ruthless and blaming others for her poorly run school. I had left numerous messages for her in regards to receiving a refund for my vouchers, having turned in my paperwork on time. I was repeatedly ignored and the female owner claimed she never got my repeated messages. ONE YEAR later I spoke to the YMCA about all of this and finally with their help I received my money. When it was time to renew my certifications, only my partner received a reminder card in the mail and I am pretty positive, she deliberately removed me from her list to spite me for forcing her to pay back what she owed me. You cannot be paid by the client AND the YMCA as that is being double paid. Dealing with that owner on the phone was never pleasant either so you can see why it is extremely important to go to the right school for the right training, comfort, and to be treated with respect and professionalism. read more

Since I just finished with the CPR class 45 minutes ago I figured no better time to write a review then right now. Chris was basically awesome. She made the class fun, informational, easy to understand and answered every question to satisfaction. I have not taken a CPR class in years and am so happy to say that some smart folks have simplified it so that anyone can perform CPR in any circumstance. I always was confused about compressions and breathes and mouth sweeps and feeling for pulse and the difference between CPR for adults and for children. No more! I hope I never have to use what I learned today but I feel confident that I can if the need arises. read more

I recently participated in an AED, CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens class that is provided through my work, this was not mandatory for me but I wanted to take one of these classes to prepare myself if the unfortunate were to happen. I am extremely happy that I did. I had Chris the retired fire chief and she was excellent! She was very funny, kept everybody's attention and made the class very entertaining.
