I was SUPER tempted to adopt another dog, but my BF talked me out of it, since we already have Payton at home & she's already a hand full. A year later, I visited Saved Me again with my BF & a couple of friends. That was when I met Maggie, one of the sweetest pitbull mixes you'll ever meet. My GF & I fell in love with her instantly. We wanted to adopt her on the spot, but agreed with our BFs that we'll sleep on it to make sure we won't change our mind. I sure as heck didn't change my mind. Jessica at Saved Me was very helpful over the phone. I emailed her my application & provided her all the information she needed for me to be an approved adopter. I've had Maggie for over 2 weeks now & I LOVE her. She loves people & has an outgoing personality. She gets along with dogs easily & is so easy to train. I love that Saved Me allows you to get personal with the dogs before you make an inform decision. I played with Maggie for an hour & that's when I knew she was perfect. In the end she wasn't eating and drinking so we brought her to the SPCA for end of life services. They asked for vet records. I had them sent over immediately. The nurse read the paperwork and said it was only an "inflamed esophagus " it's treatable and we don't feel comfortable euthanizing her. The dog could barely lift her head. I said she hasn't eaten and now she won't drink. She won't take any meds. She wouldn't even eat doggie ice cream anymore. The nurse shrugged her shoulders and said we could just leave her there or take her to another clinic. By 11 pm she was dead at home. I do not recommend the SPCA. The nurse never paid the dog an ounce of attention. She read the vet report and didn't ask any further questions. When we tried to volunteer information, she just kept shrugging her shoulders.

I believe her name was Snow and she was grey. The women who denied her adoption to me had a less feminine look and it felt as if she was trying to intimidate me or coerce me to violence even though I showed no aggression. The blond woman who was at front desk when you first walk in got up and walked away from the desk without saying a work to me during checkout. I feel she was very disrespectful yet I remained calm and cooperative. I would hate to feel as though I was discriminated against for my race for being more "aggressive" as I did not discriminate against the brunette woman who denied me my first pick kitten for her possible sexuality. Neither racial or sexual orientation discrimination is right yet I felt racial on my end with no disrespect to either women. The red head woman who had to finish my checkout was much kinder and made me feel better about adopting my second choice Shadow. Both the brunette and blonde seemed much nicer to the Caucasian couple that came in as I was leaving who there to pick up foster kittens. Everyone should be treated equally whether race, sexual orientation or disability. They also should not be denied an adoption due to feline hiv as it is very treatable. While being fostered, we visited him and decided to adopt him. The paperwork and adoption process was very smooth thanks to Mica. Mica was super prepared to answer our questions. Morris sent a lot of resources and instructions on how to set up his microchip information. It was also nice having all his medical records. I had a very good experience especially for a first-time cat mom. I would consider adopting from Morris again.

From seeing "Scampi" on their Instagram, to communicating about her and coming in to meet her, we had a great experience. No pressure was put on us to take her home, they let us spend time with her downstairs and let us get to know her, which made us more confident in our ability to make the right decision for her and for us. Clearly we elected to take the chance and make her a part of our family - and nearly five months later, she has become an integral member of our little pack. Despite her early story being unknown and having had babies before she was taken in by Street Tails (by way of ACCT), she's seemingly a happy and healthy little one who just didn't get to live her best life soon enough. We are happy to give her just that - but we have Street Tails to thank for allowing us to be her paw-rents. I would definitely adopt from them again when we are ready to add to our fur family.

Yay City Kitties! I adopted a cat from this group (a local non-profit, no-kill cat rescue) last…read moreyear. I have many, many good things to say but will try to limit the list... Thing 1: the cats! I was genuinely impressed by how well they take care of their rescues. Every stray they pick up gets top-notch vet care, including spay/neuter and screening/treatment for health issues, and is placed in a loving foster home (as in, a real person's home). It's amazing how scared, pathetic-looking cats get transformed into healthy, friendly ones by the time they're judged ready to adopt out. The $75 adoption fee covers all of this care, and it's honestly worth it. Thing 2: the support. Because each cat's "foster parent" knows the cat's personality, City Kitties is good at suggesting matches for what you're looking for (eg, playful cat always up in your business, quiet lapcat, etc) and what your home is like (other pets, etc). They really care where their cats end up and both screen potential adopters carefully and make sure you know what the cat is like. Before you adopt, you get to 1) read cute online-dating-like profiles about the cats and 2) visit them in their foster homes. And because each cat has been screened by a vet, you're likely to know about any ongoing health issues before deciding anything. Also: Even after you adopt, City Kitties is great about being available to help with concerns or questions. I've asked about routine health issues and even about cat drama when introducing the new little cat to my resident cat, and they've always been very nice and helpful. Thing 3: the people. Oh man, are they great. You'd never guess it from how professional and organized they are, but City Kitties is just a small group of people in West Philly, who started this and keep doing it as volunteers because they care. (The business address up there is for someone's house!) You can feel really good about where your money's going if you donate, and their benefit events are genuinely fun even if you're not at all a crazy cat-lady/cat-gent. She suggested I come and look when I return the next day. "No", I told her. If the dog you're seeing is all that, then go ahead, otherwise we'll come in together and she'll be gone, and we'll weep. I came home the next day and there was Rosie, a small reddish pittie girl in rough shape. She'd just had a litter, probably to fighters. Tip of her tail was raw. Her hind quarters showed where she'd had flea infestation while living on the street. Her ribs were sticking out. That said, my wife was absolutely beaming, and nursed her back to health, beginning with lots of hugs, comfort, good food, and more love. Rosie has been with us five or six years, curls up with us constantly, and is a ferocious protector when we have unexpected visitors. That said, we have an acclimation routine where she is introduced to people, slowly. Once that is done, she will protect THEM as well. I waited in the waiting room for 2.5 hours while watching numerous people who arrived after me get helped and go in front of me. At first, I assumed the shelter was simply busy, and I was willing to be patient. However, after waiting for such a long time, I finally asked why I had not been called. I was then told that my check-in apparently never went through. This is incredibly frustrating because nobody notified me that there was a problem with my check-in. I sat there for 2.5 hours thinking I was simply waiting my turn, while other people were being helped ahead of me. If my check-in hadn't gone through, someone should have noticed or at least informed me rather than allowing me to sit there for hours. I understand that animal shelters are busy and that the staff have a difficult job, but people coming in to adopt are also giving their time and are trying to give one of these animals a loving home. After waiting 2.5 hours because of what appears to have been a problem with the shelter's check-in process, this experience has been extremely disappointing. I came here excited about adopting a cat and giving an animal a home. Instead, I left feeling like my time was completely disregarded. ACCT Philly really needs to improve its check-in and adoption process and, most importantly, communicate with people when there is a problem.
