I checked my watch and told her I still had 8 minutes, then continued browsing. She immediately followed up in an angry tone with, "Seven minutes!" I fully intended to leave by 4. She eventually walked away, and I continued looking around. A moment later, I heard her loudly say "We've been here all day!" and I noticed her speaking about me with her two coworkers while they all stared in my direction. I approached the counter and asked for her manager's name. She gave it to me, and when I said I would be speaking to the manager about her behavior, she again responded angrily, saying " I'll make sure to let her know." For a shop that claims to be a charity benefiting domestic violence victims, the attitude displayed by its staff does not reflect the mission they promote. I am a long time La Grange resident, and I've both donated and purchased items here over the years, but after this experience, I will no longer be patronizing this establishment.

I was finally able to visit this location after trying for quite some time. On my recent day off I stopped in and it looks like the hours were corrected, which is great because it made the visit possible. Walking in, I was honestly a bit amazed at the variety of items they have available. There's a pretty wide selection of household goods, décor, furniture pieces, and building materials. If you enjoy browsing or treasure-hunting for unique items, there's definitely a lot to look through here. That said, one thing that confused me was that several items displayed on the floor appeared not to be for sale. The main reason I came in was because I saw boxed plastic hedges displayed in the windows and thought they would be perfect for a project I'm working on. Unfortunately, those particular items weren't actually available for purchase. Still, the store does carry many interesting pieces, and if you're willing to browse you might find something great. It's definitely worth stopping in if you're working on a home project, decorating, or just like searching for unexpected finds. Overall, a good spot with plenty of items -- just be aware that some display pieces might not actually be for sale.

Many of whom are refugees. No one makes a dime here. And no one pays a dime. Getting ready for a major renovation, I went through every closet and nook and cranny and collected anything I didn't need anymore. It was the perfect time to buy new towels, so I donated all of my old towels. All of the redecorating I've done in the past, filled my linen closet to the brim with nice bedding sets. I bagged them up and donated those too. Clothes I don't wear anymore. Snow pants and coats that never get used. Dishes that were gifts that I didn't want. Old utensils that have been replaced. My closets have never looked better, and refugees without basic necessities can get help starting their new lives here.

The store is great for jeans and other types of pants: I found plenty in my size (29), and several beautiful skirts (M). I also snagged a beautiful Boden velvet dress for $19 that I would not have otherwise been able to afford. Most of the clothes here are from stores like Akira, Levi's and American Eagle, with a few nicer brands like Express, Boden, and Eileen Fisher. Some of the items are from lower rung brands like Forever 21. The shoes (very limited collection) are mostly mid-range, such as Nike and Adidas, though here too there are some nicer brands. There is also a separate rack for designer clothing. As far as I've observed, women's sizes mostly range from 0-20, though most clothes are between 4-14. The men's section is definitely much less extensive, but here too they have plenty of jeans and other bottoms. The shop is located in a university neighbourhood, which evidently influences the kind of items they receive. There are also two fitting rooms, which is something I always appreciate in a thrift store. The store also has books, CDs, DVDs, and home goods. I did not buy any of these because my cabinets and bookshelves are already overflowing. The store is very conveniently located, with a bus stop right in front of it, and is about a ten minute walk to the Metra station. This thrift store definitely fills a niche in the neighbourhood: Gilda's is another thrift store in Hyde Park, but has higher end items that are slightly pricier than those at Out of the Closet. Overall, I will be definitely be back, and highly recommend this place if you're in the neighbourhood and enjoy thrifting!
