We headed to Saxon Woods Park Trail Head this Saturday morning and had a fantastic time! It's a great spot for hikers of any level. I love that the trails are color-coded, which makes it easy to gauge the difficulty and mileage for each zone before you head out. The trails are very dog-friendly, which we really appreciated! While there is signage asking people to leash their dogs, we encountered a few people with dogs off-leash, and honestly, everyone was super friendly and respectful, which made for a great environment. One tip for fellow hikers: while there are maps and markers throughout the woods, they can be a little hard to spot or follow in certain sections. Since cell service can get pretty spotty out there, I'd highly recommend downloading your trail map beforehand just to be safe. Overall, it's a beautiful place to spend a morning--definitely worth checking out! read more

Saxon Woods Park is generally a nice park; it's especially good for hiking and/or walking in the off-season.   Tip: There's a pretty well-equipped kids playground here, and there's also a huge pool on one end of the park; the latter is really nice in the summer months. The other day I actually saw a deer here - imagine that kind of wild life sighting in White Plains! Visitors should note that the parking lot here is used for the City of White Plains' school bus parking, so you need to keep your eyes peeled for pedestrians and children. read more

If I lived nearby, I'd probably come here often. Please note: it's for Westchester residents only during the season, ending In September. As a Queens resident it was nice to be able to visit. They have a well sized playground area with picnic tables and mini golf for $9 a person, weather permitting. There are two- three mile loop trails and a working pay phone. You could hear cars from the white trail I took so I subtract a star. They have a pool which was closed for the season. Otherwise, the bathrooms are very clean and it's good for a quick hike or to bring the kiddies if you're in the neighborhood. And they have a clothing donation drop box. read more

I love Westchester Living! Hubby and I always renew our park passes so that not only we but our friends and family can enjoy the summer. We love coming to this pool. While there are more concrete areas than green spots as compared to some of the other pools, the sheer size of this pool is what makes our summer outings great. The pool is huge; I think it's much bigger than the pool at FDR. No matter how many cars are in the parking lot(s), the pool doesn't even really feel that packed. Granted, there are definitely areas of the pool that may be crowded, like the shallow end, the lap lanes and the kiddie section but for the most part, if you're able to venture inward from the edges, you'll truly enjoy yourself. It's quite large and the downside is that it's almost always cold but not as cold as the, now closed, Sprain Ridge Pool. On very hot days with no overcast, the chill of the pool is refreshing but it was definitely take a couple of moments to get used to the cold. Still love it. On weekends, it's best to either go early so you can claim a good spot for yourself before people start packing in, or you can go for twilight swim after 4/430 pm when most children are leaving with their families and the pool really empties out. I want to say that the pool boasts olympic-sized lanes because they feel like it (my chest hurts *cough*). We'll try to get a few in throughout our water fun days. How well we fare is determined by how many pool trips we were able to squeeze out during the summer months. We usually bring our own cooler with drinks, sandwiches and snacks. They have signs that warn they will not allow coolers bigger than 12". They will place your cooler in a 12" X 12" wooden box that they have just to "confirm". Funny thing about that...we have two coolers that are close in size and the only difference is one has wheels. We've never had an issue with the wheeled cooler in earlier years but sometimes these kids that they have at the ticket window are sticklers. We had one problem this past summer when a girl at the front entrance said our cooler was too big. I asked to see a manager because we did the box test and while the top of my cooler fit (because it's 12 X 12), the bottom did not because of the 1/4 inch that the wheels came out. Long story short, manager came out and let us in with our cooler. I took a pic of hubby carting the thing inside of the entrance so we don't ever have to go through that. Again, we've only had an issue like that this one time so, I'll call it a fluke. Regardless, the pool is great for leisure, the kiddies or your personal improvement of the breaststroke. It's worth it but, again, I urge that you go hella early on weekend days for a good poolside spot AND to ensure that you get a spot in the parking lot inside the park because when they fill up, they turn you away until "X" number of spots become available. They have handicap parking if you have your placard. Even if you get turned away, they have extra spacious parking in an executive parking lot not too far away. The offer a shuttle service by way of two vans that take guest to and from the external lot but you can also walk it because it's about a fifteen minute walk and sometimes the lot will have the only line for the shuttle van back to the pool. Despite some minor inconveniences, this pool is great. We've always enjoyed ourselves for these staycation. They have decent locker rooms with showers and spaces to change. The showers used to have warm water but now it seems they've gotten colder but not that ice freeze like most outdoor pools. Saxon will always be a family summer destination. read more

We wanted a nice decent-sized park to go hiking in, and we decided to give Saxon Woods a try. Like a number of parks in this part of the US, they have a season/off season fee structure. May through September, it is $5 to park for park pass (Westchester residents only) members, and $10 for out of towners. This is not really too bad for the size of the park. Saxon Woods is about 700 acres, and has a main northern and southern section. The time we visited, we spent our time in the southern section. There are a number of hiking trails, including the Leatherstocking Trail, which is a larger, 12-mile network of trails that goes around Westchester County. Blazing is relatively decent, and the general condition of the trails is pretty good, with a nice level of challenge. They're also open for cross-country skiing in the winter. There's also a pretty enormous picnic pavilion and other picnic areas. In addition to hiking, there is also a pool, a playground, some sports fields, and full-size and miniature golf courses. I'm mainly here for the hiking, and I'll definitely be back! read more

Wow, it's absolutely gorgeous in here. We went in via the entrance on Saxon Woods Road and walked the trail for about 45 minutes.The landscape is just beautiful! Our path wound around tons of trees, boulders, steams, plus, we saw heaps of animals too; deer, racoons, rabbits, you name it. The best part of Saxon Woods Park is that it's never packed. You may get the occasional biker or dog walker, but that's pretty much it. You'll have the place mostly to yourself. A real hidden gem in Westchester. read more

A large park with many trails that span for miles in the Middle of white plains. Except you will be fooled because you will think you are in a rural area. The trails are easy to follow too, (mile markers are visible) but these are real trails with rocks, logs and other crevices you will need to jump or hurdle over. Wear appropriate shoes. read more

Beautiful park. Walked for 2 hours and didn't cover everything. If your new to the park and using the trails I the fall it may be useful to have a stick to help clear paths. Leaves are everywhere and some places are very rocky but hard to see. The pool, park, and soccer field seem great though I haven't used them. There is also a mini golf course. Unlike other Westchester parks, you don't need a county park pass to access the park but you do need it for the pool and if your having a picnic. And there is plenty of free parking. read more

Park is extremely neglected. Trails are poorly marked and are fading. This is a tick haven since leaves are up to your knees on the trails. What a shame, it could be really beautiful if staff and management would actually maintain it. Shame on you!! read more

A refreshing taste of wilderness in the depths of suburbia, the trails in Saxon Woods Park are broken down into 3 loops: the 8.5 mile East Loop,the 9.4 mile West Loop, and the 12.3 mile Outer Loop which is comprised of the East & West Loops together. There is no charge for parking. They have small little grills if you want to have a picnic. And as long as you keep your furry companion leashed, the trails are dog-friendly. Taking a hike on a still-cold Spring afternoon, I encountered the occasional jogger, dog-walker or hiker, but for the most part, it is a chance to leave the outside world behind and reflect on the natural beauty of the New York that was here long before we were. You can encounter wildlife like frogs, snakes, ducks and more. There are some older man-made structures that have been swallowed up by time and overtaken by the forest. Be sure to bring a camera if you like photography, and wear a pair of hiking boots or sturdy sneakers, as there are a few hilly sections along the trails. read more

a nice large park in white plains that is far away from the downtown area and a stone throw away from the hutch river pkwy. i picked a good sunday to come as i assumed the giant size pool would be closed or empty which is my main reason to skip this park and i aint planning on getting a pass as i dont do public pools especially now. now for the highlights and positive things i like about the park, the large walking trails which goes a long way, the forest wooded area which might be a bit creepy or scary for some but not for a wimp like me. If you enjoy golfing they have a golf course and a mini golf course as well. the covered rest area has long benches to eat and relax but i prefer to eat as walking the trail is my way for relaxing. two thumbs up for city of white plains for keeping the park clean and safe as i notice trash containers all around and good simple to read signs with rules and trail maps so i dont get lost. overall a nice family friendly park that even if you dont have a family you will still enjoy visiting. Call or check website for parking fees and for pool pass fees , bathrooms are open but shower and locker area may be closed . P.S. if you bring your doggy please have the mutt on a leash or you will hear some yenta yell at you or call the cops . read more

This is a little gem of a hike. There are a lot of cool things to see on the yellow trail - boulders, fallen trees, chipmunks , creeks and bridges. The 2.4 mile trail is easy to follow and well marked. It is an easy hike, but has enough interesting terrain and fauna to make it pleasant. There are surpisingly few bugs - I was 3 different places in westchester this week and the midges and mosquitos were pretty bad, but this was almost bug free. The trails are fairly wide, so there is less change of ticks. It is a great trail to initiate kids or newbies or just if you want to spend less time in traffic - 20-30 min from queens. Lots of boulders to climb if you are with kids. There are some places where you can see houses or hear traffic noises, so you are not in the wilderness. The park itself also has a pool and some playgrounds and there are shaded areas to picnic or barbecue. Also good places on the trail to stop and have a snack. It is not everest, but it is a suprisingly lovely little day hike that I can fit into a busy schedule and will suit many levels. Highly recommend read more

Excellent park with great views and waterfalls. The park features great hiking trails, a pool, kid's play area, etc. We hiked for about two and a half hours and still didn't cover all the grounds. It's a beautiful tranquil park. read more

Great dog park! Big fenced in area, very well kept. Lots of big trees so pretty shady. Bring bug spray! There's also an area down the trail about 10 minutes where there's a creek. A woman told me dogs play off leash there but it's not fenced in. Will definitely come back! read more

This is a beautiful trail for running or a light hike. My husband and I run the 3 mile route every weekend in the warmer months. Beware of running on days after storms or heavy rain as the trees fall and can block your way. Late spring is the best time to go as the woods are a canopy of green and there are many beautiful plants and flowers in bloom. Also, there is no fee to park between Labor day and Memorial day. In the summer months, the trees give refreshing shade for runners and hikers. Saturday and Sunday mornings are busy, lots of dogs off-leash. A nice fresh air escape from the busier and more congested parts of Westchester. read more
