My friend Kalo is from Peru and on one of his visits to my place he noticed this restaurant. He asked if it was any good, but I had never been to it, so he offered to take me there. Which is awesome because I would never have known what to order. He did the ordering for both of us, and he ordered too much, but it was all quite good. We started with potatoes in a cheese sauce and ceviche. The potatoes were amazing. I've never tasted anything quite like them. The ceviche was good. Next we had something that was veggies, white rice and French fries in a brown gravy with beef. Also quite tasty. Then fried rice with various types of meat and seafood mixed in. I tried it and it was good, but by this time I was pretty full, so I only tasted it. I'll have the rest for lunch tomorrow. We drank Inca Kola, which is very popular in Peru, although now it's apparently made by Coke, but still, quite tasty. They have a diet version, but I don't touch artificial sweeteners. We passed on dessert as I had eaten too much already. I don't have anything bad to say about this place. The service was good, the food was good, the restaurant was clean. I can't comment on the prices because I honestly didn't pay any attention since I wasn't paying for the meal (thank you, Kalo), but he didn't say anything bad about the prices. All-in-all it was a good restaurant and certainly deserving of four stars. And one to add to my list of do-overs. read more

Very homey restaurant with amazing cooking and great entrees! Staff was polite. Came in on a Friday night and tables were spaced out, staff was wearing masks, inside was clean and well kept. Kitchen is open on the other side of the dining room. Lots of food options on the menu from meats to seafood, pasta to ceviche and soups. My friend and I were starving and wanted to try everything but we decided to order some signature dishes. Ceviche is a must for me when going to Peruvian restaurants. The fish can be upgraded to corvina fish if you choose. The sauce is tangy and refreshing. Came with fresh onions and a piece of sweet potato. Nice portion. The Jalea is a big platter of fried mixed seafood. The breading was seasoned and delicious. The sauce it came with had onions in it which I loved! It was a little too fried for me but not burnt so it was all good. The steak and pesto pasta was hearty. It's been several years since my last visit but the overall experience picked up close to how I remembered. I'll dispense with the unpleasantries first: upon arrival, hostess station was unmanned: after several minutes, had to flag down a waiter to be seated. And despite having reservations, after being seated for quite some time, no wait service was initiated. Once again had to flag down a waiter and ask that we get service, have drink order taken. After an apology for the oversight, things improved. Our assigned server was friendly and patient with my guests many questions and order changes. Drinks and the complimentary toasted corn kernels were promptly served. Due to the entrees ordered, our server returned and updated us it would take longer to prepare our orders. But in the end, the meals were worth the wait. I enjoyed the Chaufa that had large shrimp, large chunks of chicken breast and beef. The presentation of the whole fried snapper is spectacular and really impressed my dining partners who ordered that entree. The churrasco was not the typical long strip of meat, seemed like a half portion. The portions of all the other entrees were bountiful so to-go boxes for leftovers are a must. Our server was very gracious and accomodated with a smile the number of additional requests from my dining party. The service is excellent. My waitress last night was very pleasant and friendly. She also happen to be cute with a heavy Latin accent which made the experience even more authentic. She gave great recommendations on drinks and entrees. I enjoyed everything she recommended. For appetizers, I started with the shrimp causas and mixed seafood ceviche. The shrimp causas is like a potato salad with shrimp. The shrimp is a cold shrimp mixed with a dressing similar to thousand island and wedged in between mashed potato. Absolutely freaking delicious! For dinner entrees, we ordered fried seafood platter and tacu tacu lomo saltado. The seafood platter was fried to perfection. Calamari, mussels, fish, and shrimp fried tender, and served with a side of tartar sauce. The tacu tacu lomo saltado is white rice and white bean mixed together then pan fried and served with a side of sauteed vegetables and tender cubed beef. Everything was amazing. From the presentation to the authenticity of flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed my dish. In the past I have tried the beef heart, fried fish, and other seafood dishes and the consistency of flavor is always good. As far as the adult drinks, the pisco sour passionfruit flavor is good. For the first time last night I tried the algarrobina and chicha. The algarrobina is similar to a spiked egg nog or coquito, and the chicha is a drink made from purple corn. Amazing flavor! Saxsay Peruvian in Tamarac. We hadn't been in a very long time; I'm going to say at least five years. We ordered a leche de tigre, a sopa de pollo, a camarones a la piedra. And two pisco sours, one classic and one passion fruit. Ceviche was very good, very spicy, excellent as a small appetizer. We did not like the chicken soup and sent it back. It was clearly made with a commercial base and not a house made bone broth. They don't have much chicken on the menu and what they do have is breast, so I can understand not wanting to go all that effort to source bones just for soup -- so don't serve it. They have a lot of other soups on the menu made with seafood that they are known for. The camarones a la piedra was very good, nice and spicy, although heavy onion content with no other veg other than yuca. Was my first time trying this dish so not sure if that was the style, I think most other people would want to eat this over rice. Pisco sours were very good and strong. read more

I Yelp everything and I'm not sure why my opinion isn't on track with 4 stars that this place is rated overall but my experience wasn't great. The service wasn't great, maybe good at best. We were not greeted cordially, I'm greeted better at church for sure. The conchita (dried corn) was stale and we asked for a new one and that one was also stale. We ordered pulpo al Olivo for the appetizer and it was amazing. If you like octopus, this was tender and full of flavor and the pieces were good size. This dish would get 5 stars but then things went bad. Their wine list is like 3 choices I think because I didn't see a list but the server told us what they had. My husband had red sangria with fruit and he liked it ok, I had Pinot Grigio and it was extremely dry but I just drank it and shut up even though she said it was the sweetest wine they have. My husband ordered the whole fish, I believe it was snapper, he didn't like it at all. He said it was dry and it barely had meat on it. The server asked him how he liked it and he explained how dry it was and the server chuckled. Personally I don't think he u understood what he said, but it was rude. I ordered the ceviche mixto and it was one of the worst ones I've had. I love ceviche but this had little flavor and some of the fish was chewy. I had a craving for grilled octopus and this place seemed to have a great one, according to the Yelp reviews I read and pictures I saw. It is located in a small shopping plaza with not much going on in Commercial blvd. It is deceptively big and nice inside. We were seated right away and brought menus. I noticed they had two different kind's of octopus Al Olivo in the appetizers and grilled in the entree section. We got grilled. For $23 you get a good portion. Unfortunately the texture was not great. In fact it was so gooey. I have a bit of a fobia with gooey food, I could not eat it, hubby had no problem with it, the flavor was there, it was just the texture I didn't like. I ordered fish ceviche instead and it was very good. Both hubby and son got Churrasco and they loved it. Service was good, I would cone back, not for octopus though. read more

I ended up at Saxsay Cafe after perusing a list of nearby restaurants & chose this one because I really enjoy Peruvian food. The staff are warm & welcoming. I ordered a few items. To start, the mint lemonade was awesome; very fresh & refreshing. My server brought me some warm canchas to nibble on. I honestly don't think that I've ever had been served them warm at any other Peruvian restaurant before; I've always had them at room temperature. This was an exceptional treat. I also ordered a Ceviche mixto and this was probably the best Ceviche I have ever had. I got to sample a variety of the causas and while I applaud them on their originality & plating, they fell a little short on taste to me. Anyone who knows me knows that I don't mind traveling for good food so any of you foodies out there who may live outside of Tamarac who may be reading this...this is a place that you should definitely check out, it's worth the drive. What a fabulous experience! We took a shot because to be honest, my family was so tired of Italian. We were celebrating the new year and it's always a challenge to find a place that can accommodate everyone, let alone please everyone. Saxsay delivered! The food was excellent and the service even better. Our server Carol was wonderful. Attentive, generous with her time, helpful in making recommendations. We all had fish. My great aunt and I shared the red snapper. When it arrived fried I was nervous. It was light; crispy without a drop of grease. The garlic sauce needed a little salt but otherwise delicious. The yucca fries were equally lovely and crisp and tender inside. Desert was fun! Little caramel filled butter cookies and a homemade ice cream that had a fruit I can't remember the name of, but was lovely. All in all it was a wonderful evening. I really love Peruvian cuisine and though I haven't been able to try all of them within our area, that is at least not yet, what I can say is that Saxsay is certainly one of the better ones. It has a new location, completely new spotlessly clean interior and kitchen. Though the décor is rather Spartan, pleasant with a clean look about it. Their menu is large, wide ranging, full encompassing with every well know Peruvian dish along with some of those lesser known, but each authentic in every detail with both daily and chef specials. During my most recent visit to get a light lunch I went for their mix seafood ceviche with a glass of chichi. If you're not acquainted with chicha it is a purple corn juice with spice, usually cinnamon, added, and theirs is one of the best chichas I've had, possessed of a clean fresh cinnamon spice flavor. The mixed seafood ceviche (mixto) was served full plate, in good presentation, consisting predominately of fish, scallop, shrimp, squid, octopus and mussel in a pleasant blend of fresh clean tasting ceviche juice garnished with red onion and small side dish of roasted Peruvian big corn kernels. I also had their flan which with its caramel tasting sauce served in clean appearing presentation being one of the best ever. TLDR Food - 9 Service - 8 Price - 7.5 Decor - 8 Would I go back? Definitely It was a long aggressive day of paintball and I was ready to destroy some food. My first thought was that I should hit up the buffet and go for the kill, but a friend text me about dinner and saved the buffet from taking a hit. We had a few hours before game night so we made plans to eat somewhere nearby to it. He doesnt eat land based animal products, so we generally go for seafood when we go out. When pulling into the plaza, the place seemed a bit small, but upon entering, it was actually a good sized place. As you enter, the kitchen is completely open and you can actually see it from outside the restaurant. It's always nice eating at a place where you can see everything going on in the kitchen. The restaurant extended all the way back, parallel to the kitchen and it had a nice decor to it. The place was clean, spacious, and had a pleasant look and feel to it along with a live band to top it off. I was enjoying the ambiance. The waitress was very kind and the different sets of staff that provided us with drinks and condiments were equally polite. While reading the menu, prices felt a little high to me, but nothing outrageous. I searched through every single Yelp food picture in search of my meal and then I found it. The tacu tacus looked delicious and I just knew I needed to have it. My friend ordered the grilled squid (when was the last time you saw grilled squid on a menu) and I got the tacu tacu lomo saltado. I still had no idea what a tacu tacu was, but that's ok. When my meal arrived, it was unexpectedly larger than I expected from pictures, which is definitely a good thing. The octopus was about the size I expected. First, the presentation was great. My plate looked absolutely delicious and I couldn't wait to go in for the kill. I tried my friends octopus dish and it was really good. The last time I had grilled octopus was in December in Mexico and this reminded me of that. It was tender and perfectly cooked. It was time to dig into my meal and experience this mysterious tacu tacu. The giant mound on the plate was a mix of rice, mashed white beans, and whole white beans. The beef slices were sauteed with onions and tomatoes and the dish as a whole was great. I felt the rice and beans needed a touch of salt and more gravy, but neither one stopped me from devouring everything. Oh, bonus items that I almost forgot about. They give you complimentary fried cord and those were different and delicious. Unfortunately we kind of ate all of it before I thought to take a picture, but it just looks like corn lol. read more

Found this place on Yelp neighborhood. I've visited a couple of times and have ordered the same thing each time. That's the Jalea (fried seafood topped with lemon onions). This is a favorite Peruvian dish of mine. I love the fried seafood with the onions and fried yuca which is usually served with it. Seating is social distancing, temperature checks are done at the door, hand sanitizer is at most tables, so they try to provide as match safety as possible. The ambiance needs some improvement. Some nice music would help drown out the noise of other guests and kitchen items banging. The wait staff are not always friendly, and there is no check on you after your food is put on the table until it's time for the bill. The food is delicious as I've heard other guests comment on their meals. However, the welcome is not fully demonstrated for business. This is the key point that most businesses fail to deliver on. Making every customer feel that they are welcome and wanted for business. Will return to try other dishes. read more
