In the Long Beach area, if you are SCAN, you have ST Mary's Medical Center (see reviews) and St Mary's IPA. Do NOT expect decent answers or anyone who knows what they are talking about to answer or return your call. As an Employer, SCAN sucks, well at least in the call center department they do. They have really cool benefits, but the logging on and out of the phone, sucks. 5 minutes to go to the bathroom, screw you! I have been with SCAN since Jan. 1, 2014, and everything has been excellent: the service, the doctors, the specialists, the telephone support, the questionnaires, the risk assessment. I get flu shots and other vaccinations free or at a reduced cost. I have sleep apnea, and I see a sleep specialist for free and send him e-mails and ask Qs, and he always answers. I have a $1700-CPAP machine that is free. It's hard to beat free. The machine is the latest and best there is. I am with UCLA Heath, which is one of the best in the country. I see my primary doctor, whom I admire, whenever I want. She really knows her stuff. I also send her e-mails and get prompt answers. I trust her completely. SCAN sent a risk-assessment person out to ask me questions and help with my overall health planning. Very thorough and knowledgeable. I have only had one problem with SCAN: the medical specialists here in Long Beach are not as good as those up in Los Angeles, so I drive some 30 miles to see my primary care doctor and specialists: ENT, orthopedist, gastroenterologist, and ophthalmologist. But it is worth it. And SCAN has a free ride-service if I want to use it. BTW, SCAN was started years ago by a group of senior citizens here in Long Beach who were dissatisfied with the way healthcare was provided at that time. They have done a great job. This is crazy. Last Open Enrollment i was hired to be in the Scan commercials honestly saying they were great!!! My picture was on one of their flyers! After two years of covering my very very vital medication, they stopped my coverage and denied my reauthorization from my doctor. Soo i get mad at SCAN. Nope not their fault. I went into their headquarters and a very nice lady informed me that that in order to get coverage for use for a medical condition different then what med was intended for i need doctor to apply for it through the medical side Monarch, and not pharmacy side. Error by a doctor and i can get this fixed. So, so every time i have had an issue, SCAN has worked through it with me in a nice way. read more

I have had Health Care Partners thru Scan for a number of years. The primary care is terrible. I just tried to get an appointment and was told none are available before September. It is now Mid May. A person could be dead waiting to see your doctor. I have used the Urgent Care for injuries, and it was okay...but if you need to speak with a doctor about your health concerns you will probably be weeks or months waiting. Some of the doctors that Health Care Partners referred me to have been a disgrace. Unclean offices i wouldn't take my dog into. I thought when I turned 65 and was eligible for medicare/SCAN Health Plan life would be a breeze. Well I was sooooo WRONG! SCAN Health plan is the absolute worst. Everytime I see those cute tv commercials I want to throw something at the tv. It's all lies. They are not there for you in any way shape or form. My doctor ordered an MRI so he could diagnose what is causing the excruciating pain in my leg. I needed to utilize a facility with an open MRI. SCAN sends me to this dump called Bay Harbor who doesn't even follow CDS covid guidelines. I go and the technician tried to roll me in a machine that was 2 inches away from my face and was about to knock my face mask off. I say to her NO NO NO get me out, I cannot do this. I called my doctor and explained to him what happened. He requested that I go to Westwood Open MRI (the best in California) and they denied the request. The doctor calls them and explains that I need an MRI and it needs to be an OPEN MRI because I'm severely clostrophobic. Well months of going back and forth with SCAN and receiving NO to all my request and appeals, the doctor said lets try putting you under anesthesia. It will cost more but it's an option. Well SCAN comes back with an approval to spend money on an anesthesiologist, admittance to the hospital, paying for anesthesia to put me under, bring me back out of anesthesia and whatever the hospital will charge which is a total waste of money and a huge inconvenience. I tell them just send me to a real OPEN MRI. Nope, they rather throw away money. Today they called to see if I received the services I requested? Are you kidding me. When I told the representative what I had been dealing with, she say's the doctor should have submitted another request to go to another MRI facility. I say so he's supposed to keep writing request for MRI facilities until SCAN decides to approve one??? She said yes. I tell her, "I think my doctor has better things to do with his time". As far as I'm concerned SCAN is in breach of their contract because my policy says MRI's are covered. Not that they will review your MRI request on a case by case basis while you suffer from excruciating pain. I have a full notebook filled with names and dates of representatives I spoke with. I could write a book on why you should stay away from this crazy health care plan. So heed my warning and those already on this site. Oh I should mention that I reached out to supervisors who promised to call me back the next day. Well I'm still waiting for the call. Their employees are rude and lack compassion. I should have believed the reviews. But my mom who is deceased had good luck with SCAN so I thought I'd give them a try. Luckily it's open enrollment and I'm switching out of this SCAM insurance. I had to switch to another eye doctor, California Eye Specialists even though I was told I could keep my eye doctor. They said I had a "history" with my eye doctor so I could keep him. That was not true. The new eye doctor for glaucoma had really long waits, like 2 months. Although I followed their instructions by the time I saw their specialists I was already partially blind in my left eye. My back problems were never properly addressed and now repairing the problem may not be possible. My recommendation is to find a different insurance company! read more

My policy took effect on June 1st and I'm disenchanted already! Of all the doctors in my area, only three were taking new patients. After 3 DAYS on the phone, I was able to find one that could take me before the END OF JULY!! (The doctor they assigned me is a 30 minute drive away...too far). I was also told that there are alternative medicine practitioners that offer 30% discount to SCAN members, ie acupuncturists, nutritionists, chiropractors, etc. That may be, except there is NOT ONE within a 30 mile radius of me! They rushed me into signing up before I had a chance to research the plan. Now I'm stuck for a year and the people I've talked to are borderline rude! I had more options with Medi-Cal...no problems seeing specialists including acupuncturist and chiropractor. It almost makes you want to stay on welfare! I think that's really sad! Had to call several times to get a competent person. The first person said I couldn't change my PCP until new enrollment (wrong). The second person gave me a name of a PCP that is no longer a PCP provider (wrong). The third person said my health plan wasn't listed so they would have to contact them and call me back (wrong). (She NEVER called back.) The fourth person understood my situation and seemed to sort it out. Frankly, as a former H.R. Executive I have absolutely no idea who is hiring these people or what kind of training they receive. If I weren't so persistent, I don't think I would have gotten this sorted out. SCAN truly is a SCAM. I worked there for several years and most of the management team are two-faced snakes. They treat the call center employees like children, and punish everyone for the actions of one or two. For example, there was a time when radios were allowed, but because one employee abused the privilege by calling into radio stations during her work hours, they took away everyones radio. Why not just discipline that one employee? Morale is very low at SCAN, so if someone hangs up on you after you've been on hold for 30 minutes, you know why. As for their insurance, I spent every minute of my shift listening to complaints from seniors. Nobody seemed to like it. Scan doesn't pay their claims. They don't cover medically necessary prescriptions. etc. You name it, I've heard it over and over again. Stay away from them. read more

I have called to dis enroll from scan health plan on several occasions and I have been denied several times. I am bed ridden and the transportation department constantly not arrived to take me to my doctors appointments. I have also been denied for blood work, MRI's, Ultrasounds etc. Medicare has asked to call SCAN and dis enroll so that I can have medicare as my primary insurance. Medicare needs a letter from SCAN stating that I no-longer have SCAN insurance. When I called SCAN and asked to be dis enrolled they will not comply with my request. I no-longer want SCAN as my insurance. SCAN has proved themselves to be incompetent on several occasions. I have also filed several grievances with SCAN and their lack of ability to provide adequate services. read more

After 4 hours on the phone today to answer a simple cost of drug question I have learned my lesson about SCAN. The 'agent' that signed me up and all contacts on the phone had no answer for the cost of a drug, just the run around on how they could not provide the answer? This cost issue was not a tough question and i am concerned as to why they will not answer. Better to avoid Scan and find a reputable group that can answer questions without hanging up or putting on hold for hours. This health HMO is terrible. I have reported them to CMS for lack of responsiveness. Their physician network is below par. I will deal with that in another context (a malpractice action). I am healthcare proxy for a member with metastatic lung cancer and early dementia. I came out from NY to shepherd her through initial stages of diagnosis and treatment of her cancer. At her first chemo, she was charged a $1000 co-pay. She has met $400 of her $500 out of pocket expenditure for the year. However, SCAN has not yet notified the oncologist that she should no longer have a co-pay. I was told by SCAN that it can take 90 days (3 months!) for the health plan to notify the provider that the member has met their out of pocket obligation. So when the member goes for 2nd chemo in 3 weeks, she will be charged another $1000 co-pay. SCANS member services are terrible---hold times are meant to get you to hang up. Yesterday, I was on hold for 1 hour 45 min to speak with a supervisor. I hung up. When open enrollment comes in November, this member will disenroll in SCAN (known locally as "SCAM") and enroll in regular Medicare. Shame on SCAN. read more

I am writing on behalf of my wife. My retirement company did away with insurance benefits and we were required to acquire outside coverage. We did although we both had to go with separate insurance companies. She went with SCAN last June to begin August 1. Her ID card never arrived so on August 13 she called to inquire. She reached customer service where she was met with excellent service. This man took his time and explained everything in detail to her. Her pharmacy needs had to be addressed along with the missing ID card. She is new to SCAN and hopefully her contact and needs with the company will be few or if not, she will receive similar service as she did today. So far, so bad. Husband has Glioblastoma IV, an aggressive, recurrent brain cancer. He signed up for Scan after doing a lot of research, but unfortunately he didn't check to see his 2 oncologists were on the plan, and I thought he had done that. So I have spent the last 2 weeks struggling with Scan to get them to allow him to see his oncologist (who takes care of the chemo, monitoring blood work, etc). We did finally get a referral..which they confirmed by phone on the 11th, then sent a letter saying he was referred as of the 4th. Then they sat on the other referral for another day, after which they denied the neuro-oncologist..the doctor who monitors the brain and what is going on in there..the one who watches for recurrence. Even though both the primary care doctor's assistant and I have told them repeatedly that this is a serious condition, and that he needs to see his neuro-oncologist by the 31st for an mri, and when I look on the Scan website, this doctor is listed as in network...they say no. Now, they did give us a referral..to a neuro SURGEON. When I called his office I was told he didn't do anything with cancer. I have spent a lot of time on the phone calling them, and so has the girl from the primary doctor's office. One thing is sure. I will NEVER sign up for Scan! Two months later, and the end of the story: After multiple calls and another 2 weeks, we finally had the needed appointment with the neuro surgeon Scan originally sent us to. He was an excellent doctor, and I think I figured out why his office staff wouldn't just let me make an appointment the first time I called: he only works at that office one day a week, and the front staff doesn't really know what his specialty is. Yes, he is a neuro surgeon, he is ALSO an expert in glioblastoma. I now understand that the problem was that when my husband signed up for Scan, he was automatically connected with a doctor-group within Scan, because the primary care doctor he had was in that group. So even though I could look on the Scan website and see that the neuro-oncologist he had was in their system, he wasn't in the same "group" as my husband's primary car doctor. Another part of the problem was that when this illness journey began, my husband had a PPO, so he got referred to a good surgeon, who then referred him to an oncologist (who was not a neuro-oncologist), and then he found the Nero-oncologist on his own. This wasn't a problem with this PPO, but when Scan entered the picture, each doctor was in a different loop. Word to the wise: if you want to use Scan, be prepared to spend a few hours digging through the different doctor-groups to see which group fits your needs. I still will never use it myself. In the end, my husband got the needed mri, and saw the necessary doctors. His primary care doctor's office girl was wonderful and we were able to go onto the hospice care company of our choice which became immediately necessary, as the Cancer-Beast won the war and my dear husband died in March. Glioblastoma is a horrible cancer, and the 8 months he got after the initial surgery were ruined by the effects of chemo/radiation, which he was forced to do because it's the "standard of care"-- a standard care which all the doctors will tell you is ineffective, it buys you a month or two, and destroys whatever quality of life you had. But if you don't follow the "standard" set out by the insurance companies, then they won't support you. I will always wonder what our final months together would have been like if insurance would support alternative care. But that's another story. I still give Scan 1 Star, and hopefully will never be in a situation where it is the only option for me. read more

scan has gone downhill so fast...3 short years ago i was telling people, yeah, scan is great..no more..even to call them to talk to a rep now is ridicules..cant wait for the timeline to go with someone else. seems their drs are not the best, if fact ive had the same dr for 20 years, she used to be ok, but since she became part of scan shes become mediocre, so i went with someone else after all this time..referrals are a joke, and the time to wait to get in somewhere is beyond ridicules ..4 months to see a new primary care for initial visit, 20 days for a holter monitor which took 5 minutes to get put on..almost 3 months to see a damn cardiologist..omg. i just got done calling to have id cards sent to me with my new primary doctor i it..had to repeat myself about 4 times as to what i was requesting...whoa, unbelievable. for this to happen that a business has gone from someone you would refer someone to, to telling people, never use them, run...in 3 short years has to be being done on purpose, for what reason, who knows? but yeah, they had to put in the extra work to become bottom of the barrell. read more

On September 9th my mother passed away at the Skilled Nursing Center of what they refer to as failure to thrive. This is the lady Scan stated was good to go home and take care of herself. Then of all things I just got another call from SCAN today stating I didn't have the right forms submitted for them to talk with me. You can imaging my response. I found SCAN to be unprofessional and absolutely uncaring about their patients and clients. Thankfully I don't need their lacking-service any longer since the funeral home has her remains. read more

People, please do yourselves a big favor and never ever consider Scan as your health insurance. You will not die from any of your medical conditions but from the stress that Scan will put you through. The company has poor operations. All their departments are extremely disorganized, their employees definitely need more training since most of them are incompetent and they are only there to get paid providing poor customer service. From the transportation service, Over the counterdrug benefit, referrals, doctors' licensing and contracts, medical supplies orders and everything else is extremely poorly operated. None of these should be accepted nor tolerated. Do not expect from the supervisors and managers either. They will try to call you once just to have a record that they call but you cannot reach them when you return the call. And sending an email is a bigger joke. They ignore everything. Omg! I opted out of Scan and went back to my PPO after only being on the plan less than 3 weeks. It took three weeks, and six medical appointments with various providers to finally get a diagnosis of a fractured toe stem. Even when you do get the referral information from your PCP, it is the wrong information. You could be dead before you ever receive the proper care. I paid an additional $10. a mo. for dental/vision and at one month have yet to receive a dental ins. card or information. You get what you pay for. read more

I'm quite surprised at the negative reviews! I was with scan for a year and never had an issue at all! I was with dignity health in Camarillo. Loved the doctors and received referrals in a timely manner. I switched to humana last year because of lower co pays; actually no co pays for most visits. Also my drug coverage is cheaper with Humana but I'm thinking of going back to scan because one prescription I got through scan I cannot get at humana. If I could post a zero stars, I would. I am the neighbor of a SCAN user. She is an elderly woman and is having a hard time dealing with the absolute ineptness of the customer service reps at SCAN. I assisted her in writing a letter, complete with all the requested documents and a claim form, and they still said it wasn't enough, that they needed a complete 105 page patient care report. It's been a year. I think they just keep giving people the run around in the hopes that they will give up and just go away. Plan coverage is very good. Customer service is terrible. Three calls to customer service and I was on hold an average of 32 minutes for each call. Customer service representative told me they have a serious shortage of representatives and Scan won't hire more people. Customer service is vital for any health service, get it together Scan. read more

I signed up for SCAN in January. I was told that leaving Caremore and moving to SCAN would not disrupt my health care. When I scheduled my appointment with my PCP in January, I was shocked to find out that they didn't have me in the system. It took until 2/9 to finally be in the system and have my appointment. Now comes the good stuff. Scan put me in the wrong county so they had to drop my insurance (my PCP does not operate in that county) and reinstate it as of 3/1. I am an amputee and my PCP appointment on 2/9 was for a referral to a Physical Therapist to get a new wheelchair. I have called everyday, spoken to over 20 people at SCAN and over 15 people at Caremore...here I am on 3/10 with that referral still "in pending". I can not lift my wheelchair (I live alone) and it has been 2 weeks since I have been to the supermarket. No one can help me, no one at SCAN cares...they never call you back. I have been a SCAN member for 5 years and I always, always rave to family & friends about how wonderful & thorough my SCAN Plan is...& its the HMO Plan! Prior to SCAN I have always paid premium prices for Anthem PPO...so my expectations are high! My SCAN services from inpatient surgery to doctors to prescriptions to physical therapy & balance therapy have all been excellent!! . I rave so much about SCAN, I have considered (thought about) becoming a Sales Rep/ Counselor for SCAN. I have used SCAN services in the South Bay...and now in the San Clemente (OC) area. I am a provider who has to call Scan regarding patient benefits and billing. I can tell you from first hand experience that this is the worst insurance company in the United States. I call many insurance plans throughout the U.S. all day. With Scan, I am hold for over one hour every time until one of these clowns answers the phone. It makes no difference what day it is, even during the middle of the week and its the same automated voice "We are experiencing a high volume of calls." I am unable to obtain patient assigned medical group information and financial risk questions online and through the IVR so I have no choice but to call. They are understaffed and awful. I wish the insurance commissioner can just shut them down for good. This insurance company, as well as others, prioritizes greed over health. No wonder so many providers throughout California dumped you and refuse to accept your insurance. read more

I have had SCAN health plan for over 20 years and have been satisfied with their primary care services. But don't expect to get satisfied from their specialist referrals. I was recently referred to Dr. Kevin Ashby, Gastroenterologist and called for an appointment. The office doesn't answer the phone and won't return my call. When I complained to the health group customer service, I got a call from Dr. Ashby's "office manager" who told me to seek another physician. In other words "we are too busy to be courteous to our patients". I don't attribute this attitude to the doctor, but the "office manager" needs an attitude adjustment. read more

I am having a problem with double vision. I have ocular implants for distance. I also have a lazy right eye. I went to Acuity Eye in Palm Desert and saw an Optometrist who told me that I could not have double vision because of the lazy eye. He prescribed glasses. $300.00 later, I still have double vision. I called Acuity Eye today and I have to wait one month to see an Ophthalmologist!! Are you kidding me? I don't recommend SCAN. They will let you go blind before you get help. read more

I have always had scan as my insurance since getting on medicare years ago , i have had no problems with the doctors or test centers , my care is administered by the doctor at Facey medical center. While i was living in LA County i was paying 0 for medical premiums and 16.00 for the optional dental and had a 0 Co-pay , when i moved up to Ventura county the same care started costing me 55.00 per month for the medical and dental combined and my Co-pays increased to 8.00 per Doctor visit and 10.00 for a specialist and my health benefits did not change just the cost. i forget the actual cost but i also got hit recently with around a 100 to 200 bill for a colonoscopy and endoscope which was ordered by my doctor and was done at a Facey facility. As far as the care i have had no problems with approvals for referrals my doctor has sent or the care i received from my doctor or the other providers the only complaint is the extra cost just for moving 15 miles to another town across the county line. In fact every year on my birthday i get a call from a Scan representative wishing me a happy birthday. My 3 rating is because of the cost change from 1 county to another that Scan charges not the care i received from any doctors. read more

Their employees LIE every time they PROMISE that a Manager will call you back because NONE are ever available when you call for help dealing with your healthcare agency (like Monarch) or your Doctor's Group! I've called these jerks (SCAN) in Long Beach 6 TIMES now in 60 days regarding a Denial of Payment for a Lab Test both Monarch and OptimOne Medical Group FAILED to submit for an Authorization prior to the test which is Required to be covered by Medicare! I filed a Grievance with SCAN against both Healthcare providers, SCAN did NOTHING! Since I pay SCAN (with my Medicare) they are MY employee and are supposed to Advocate for ME with Monarch and my doctor's office. They have done NEITHER! The Arrogance SCAN has making Promises to return calls from their PAYING Members is staggering! This situation has been going on for 8 MONTHS! Since April 2019! SCAN is worse than any government agency I've ever dealt with. The DMV is more honest and helpful than SCAN and that says a lot! My initial experience with SCAN was not stellar, but after they read my review here and on Facebook, they got in contact with me and things that were delayed were put in motion. They got mother connected with a home nurse who came by and checked her out. They got the medical group and the doctors moving on approvals and appointments so that my mother could actually get treatment and they listened and addressed concerns that we had about the doctors the facilities and how we were being treated. Today my mother got a procedure at a very nice in network hospital and there was no hassle. Sabrina at SCAN called us afterwards to see how it went and give us next steps. I'm happy to see a healthcare company that's actually concerned about the patient. Thank you for hearing and doing. ----Original review. SCAN Turned this around---- Scan is horrible. My mother's primary doctor found a mass and Scan delayed and outright denied more tests. She went to the emergency room because she couldn't eat and was weak and her stomach was firm and distended. Doctors put her on an IV and told her that they wanted to admit her for a biopsy. SCAN blocked the admittance and said that she had to go to an oncologist ( who had privileges in that hospital) before they would allow it. So they put this clearly Ill woman out to wait until she could make an appointment for a consultation (not treatment). Skip forward 3 and a half weeks and the oncologist says that it's stage 4 cancer and unfortunately he doesn't know how long he's going to have to wait before SCAN approves a biopsy or PET scan. We begged him to directly admit her because she hasn't been able to eat anything for a week. Doctor says that direct admit from SCAN takes at least 4 days . Because of my mothers state, he directs us to go to the ER at a hospital that he has privileges where he can do the biopsy and a PET scan. My mother is in the hospital for hours and is about to get a bed when SCAN blocks her admittance and says they will only cover 1 particular hospital. We relent so that she can get some IV fluids and pain treatment. The hospital that they send her to is substandard to say the least but they at least she's admitted somewhere. The oncologist sent orders for the biopsy and luckily, this time it's not blocked. But (get this), to have the biopsy done, she has to be transported by ambulance to the hospital where we attempted to have her admitted like a month ago. The one where she was sent home when we initially wanted her admitted for a biopsy. All of this time, she has yet to be treated for the cancer, still cannot eat. We have to wait unreasonable amount of time for anything and SCAN BLOCKS TREATMENT AND PROCEDURES DOCTORS DEEM NECESSARY FOR PATIENT HEALTH. SCAN has been paid, doctors have said what needs too be done yet SCAN chooses to delay, divert and deny treatment until the patient has lost hope. At several points in this ordeal it became quite obvious that SCAN throws up as many roadblocks as it takes to get the patient to give up or die before useful treatment is provided. In trying to return a call from a Scan Member Services person I tried 3 times and gave up. I kept getting put into a Mailbox message and I didn't have a mailbox number just her EXTENSION NUMBER which should have connected me. WHY can't this company get more modern phone service??? read more
