I am having a problem with double vision. I have ocular implants for distance. I also have a lazy right eye. I went to Acuity Eye in Palm Desert and saw an Optometrist who told me that I could not have double vision because of the lazy eye. He prescribed glasses. $300.00 later, I still have double vision. I called Acuity Eye today and I have to wait one month to see an Ophthalmologist!! Are you kidding me? I don't recommend SCAN. They will let you go blind before you get help. read more

I have always had scan as my insurance since getting on medicare years ago , i have had no problems with the doctors or test centers , my care is administered by the doctor at Facey medical center. While i was living in LA County i was paying 0 for medical premiums and 16.00 for the optional dental and had a 0 Co-pay , when i moved up to Ventura county the same care started costing me 55.00 per month for the medical and dental combined and my Co-pays increased to 8.00 per Doctor visit and 10.00 for a specialist and my health benefits did not change just the cost. i forget the actual cost but i also got hit recently with around a 100 to 200 bill for a colonoscopy and endoscope which was ordered by my doctor and was done at a Facey facility. As far as the care i have had no problems with approvals for referrals my doctor has sent or the care i received from my doctor or the other providers the only complaint is the extra cost just for moving 15 miles to another town across the county line. In fact every year on my birthday i get a call from a Scan representative wishing me a happy birthday. My 3 rating is because of the cost change from 1 county to another that Scan charges not the care i received from any doctors. read more

I wasn't informed of that when I enrolled, just that I could chose one Dec 1st. SCAN advertisements "claim" to be Senior and Member oriented, BS! Their employees LIE every time they PROMISE that a Manager will call you back because NONE are ever available when you call for help dealing with your healthcare agency (like Monarch) or your Doctor's Group! I've called these jerks (SCAN) in Long Beach 6 TIMES now in 60 days regarding a Denial of Payment for a Lab Test both Monarch and OptimOne Medical Group FAILED to submit for an Authorization prior to the test which is Required to be covered by Medicare! I filed a Grievance with SCAN against both Healthcare providers, SCAN did NOTHING! Since I pay SCAN (with my Medicare) they are MY employee and are supposed to Advocate for ME with Monarch and my doctor's office. They have done NEITHER! The Arrogance SCAN has making Promises to return calls from their PAYING Members is staggering! This situation has been going on for 8 MONTHS! Since April 2019! SCAN is worse than any government agency I've ever dealt with. The DMV is more honest and helpful than SCAN and that says a lot! You cannot Trust SCAN, don't even think that they are there for you as a Member, a Senior or a paying subscriber to their insurance. I've been with them for THREE YEARS! Updated Review. I originally gave them one star. I have to say that Scan stepped up. My initial experience with SCAN was not stellar, but after they read my review here and on Facebook, they got in contact with me and things that were delayed were put in motion. They got mother connected with a home nurse who came by and checked her out. They got the medical group and the doctors moving on approvals and appointments so that my mother could actually get treatment and they listened and addressed concerns that we had about the doctors the facilities and how we were being treated. Today my mother got a procedure at a very nice in network hospital and there was no hassle. Sabrina at SCAN called us afterwards to see how it went and give us next steps. I'm happy to see a healthcare company that's actually concerned about the patient. Thank you for hearing and doing. ----Original review. SCAN Turned this around---- Scan is horrible. My mother's primary doctor found a mass and Scan delayed and outright denied more tests. She went to the emergency room because she couldn't eat and was weak and her stomach was firm and distended. Doctors put her on an IV and told her that they wanted to admit her for a biopsy. SCAN blocked the admittance and said that she had to go to an oncologist ( who had privileges in that hospital) before they would allow it. So they put this clearly Ill woman out to wait until she could make an appointment for a consultation (not treatment). Skip forward 3 and a half weeks and the oncologist says that it's stage 4 cancer and unfortunately he doesn't know how long he's going to have to wait before SCAN approves a biopsy or PET scan. We begged him to directly admit her because she hasn't been able to eat anything for a week. Doctor says that direct admit from SCAN takes at least 4 days . Because of my mothers state, he directs us to go to the ER at a hospital that he has privileges where he can do the biopsy and a PET scan. My mother is in the hospital for hours and is about to get a bed when SCAN blocks her admittance and says they will only cover 1 particular hospital. We relent so that she can get some IV fluids and pain treatment. The hospital that they send her to is substandard to say the least but they at least she's admitted somewhere. The oncologist sent orders for the biopsy and luckily, this time it's not blocked. But (get this), to have the biopsy done, she has to be transported by ambulance to the hospital where we attempted to have her admitted like a month ago. The one where she was sent home when we initially wanted her admitted for a biopsy. All of this time, she has yet to be treated for the cancer, still cannot eat. We have to wait unreasonable amount of time for anything and SCAN BLOCKS TREATMENT AND PROCEDURES DOCTORS DEEM NECESSARY FOR PATIENT HEALTH. SCAN has been paid, doctors have said what needs too be done yet SCAN chooses to delay, divert and deny treatment until the patient has lost hope. At several points in this ordeal it became quite obvious that SCAN throws up as many roadblocks as it takes to get the patient to give up or die before useful treatment is provided. Okay, about an hour ago, I called Member Service to change (yet AGAIN) my PCP. Why would I do that for the 4th time in one year? Well, because either the PCP OR the specialist dropped out of the group, the PCP just wanted me to come in EVERY two weeks for no apparent reason. The worst group I've seen in my time seeing doctors at all, ever, has been the Temecula Valley Physicians Group. I could give you the litany of reasons why that is true, but for now--& since I've left THAT do-nothing-inadequate outfit, we can focus on today's biggest issues. I called & spoke to someone named Rene (male) He took down ALL the info, confirmed it, and then said I had to speak to the person who would ACTUALLY enroll me in the newer group. (What? Isn't Rene "member services?" Isn't that HIS purpose, function, etc.?) Well--being happy to accommodate Rene, I said "okay." After a rather lengthy wait, I get the one I will call "another guy." He sort of mumbled his name and was obviously eager to get on with the task. He asked me EXACTLY the same questions as our boy Rene did earlier. Okay, I still went along for this strange ride. He asked me to hold on for a "brief" moment. I guess the word "brief" is subjective. For me, 12 minutes is waaaaay longer than brief--especially when no nobody comes back on to apologize for the wait, or WHATEVER. So, after this, (and by now I am not quite as happy and perky as I was at the outset) this guy asked me if I had anything else he could do. To be fair, I have asked this of 4 previous member services persons over the past 10 days--none of whom gave me a "workable" answer. So today I tried again. You have a new (but very unimproved) website. It is SO not right that it may be violating the HIPAA rules for patient confidentiality. I actually told the guy that I would not argue with him, because he was not sufficiently informed (with regard to the IT setup) to help me. So, ultimately, I asked for a SUPERVISOR. OH BOY! Another wait. After 6 minutes, I got someone named "Cynthia" who sounded like I woke her up and that she was sort of bothered. In any case, she gave her name and asked how she could help. (My confidence in good ol' Cynthia was greatly lacking) I said, "Hi, Cynthia, are you a SUPERVISOR?" She said, "I'm management." Me: "A supervisor?" Cynthia: "No, I'm a senior member services person." OMG! Cynthia was obviously too bothered to want to pursue this issue I have, so I said, "Cynthia, you are NOT going to be able to help me. I truly need a SUPERVISOR or one of your IT guys." Humorously, she danced around that request and said, "We have a protocol for IT." I said "But you DO have an IT department right?" She said, and I kid you not, "We do, but we don't." Okay--where on earth could I go with THAT answer. I asked if she could connect be to the IT department that IS. (I know I lost her somewhere there.) But then, I could see/feel the spark of brilliance that she had--as this would be her ONLY way to get me off of the phone AND her back. She said. "I could TRY to connect you to a supervisor or I could make sure that one CALLS YOU BACK WITHIN ONE HOUR" Hmmmm, that sounds like a commitment to my learned ears. I said "okay, lets do that." She then summarized here previous statement by s saying..."to call you back as soon as possible." (AHA! That is NOT the same as ONE hour.) So here I sit--and I've got this "offer" of sleepy Cynthia on the clock. We have about 50 minutes to see if this actually happens. Most importantly, the SITE IS NOT WORKING AS YOU I AM SURE INTENDED. Next, I am sure that if basic info is not present, that my patient confidentiality is clearly violated (HIPAA violation for sure) I want to get to speak to one of the responsible members of your company (circus?) and I want things corrected. In order to do things, I absolutely DO use the services of the people I consult with which include, among many, congressional representatives, media, and attorneys. In closing I do believe that if MEDIOCRITY is your goal at SCAN then you have been successful. If you are striving for excellence--you've missed the goal by miles. Thanks, Lucia Bartoli P.S. The main reason I signed on for SCAN was the benefit of a ride from my home to doctor appointments. Yesterday I used the service for the first time and ended up standing outside in the cold 50 minutes then having to find a neighbor to drive me as the ride provided by SCAN never showed up. I want to just quit and find another health provider as this experience was so unprofessional, from the way it happened to the way the personnel handled it. One phone call from a woman who said, the driver would "be there in twenty minutes, I mean forty minutes" then 50 minutes later he still was not there, and I'd been standing outside at the front entrance most of that time because I did not want to make myself anymore late than I already was going to be. Then I had to pay a neighbor to drive me and I got there late and it affected the entire appointment as I was so rattled. So that is my feedback on SCAN's transportation service. I would have been better off taking the bus. As for the doctor, if I go back, I'm going to ask to see a physician's assistant, as I found the nurses here in Lancaster to be Very Professional caring and willing to listen. Then the doctor entered the room, and the appointment was all down hill from there. The doctors they hire are all from third world countries which makes their interviewing skills really bad. I have been to worse in free clinics, when I was without health insurance. AND the rest of the staff is great. An older relative of ours has had Scan HMO medicare insurance for years and experienced adequate service while they were healthy. Now that they are very sick, we are learning all about Scan limitations. By law, they must offer and cover all services covered by Medicare, however they do it at low costs within their network which means options are limited and you may end with 1 star facilities. Zero out of pocket expenses sounds good, however care quality may suffer. Independent patient advocates are needed to oversee that care is complete & fair and not cut short. The Scan case worker and Scan assigned hospital doctor are not independent causing a conflict of interest when determining care options. read more

I sent SCAN a copy of my mother's advance directive and power of attorney via certified mail when she enrolled a few years back. She is now in the final stages of Alzheimers so I need to make decisions for her. The nitwits at SCAN and their contractors state they cannot find these documents. Seniors, beware. Without these documents SCAN can do whatever they want to your mom or dad. Even though you provide them with notarized power of attorney and advance directives, the idiots in the office conveniently lose them. This is unacceptable. If you are thinking about choosing Scan as your Health provider think again. I was with Kaiser for many years before deciding to leave due to their influx of new patients. I wanted a small but well rounded Health Plan and I decided upon Scan. Let me tell you they say that they have a network that range from physicians to specialists in all areas of the health industry. Don't believe them! You set up an appointment two weeks in advance just to learn that the doctor you are scheduled to see is no longer in the network. What kind of middleman health plan does this to it's patients? I had a cold that was so bad that I had aches and pains from my neck to my lower back. I couldn't get an appointment for 2 days. When I'm hurting I want to see someone now, maybe the next day but how long does a body have to wait for care on their network? Scan doesn't even have a hospital or clinic they just farm the customers out to local sites and you never get a feeling that Scan is there for you. I have had my issues with Kaiser in the past but by far Kaiser was always able to see me the same day even if I had to wait 2-3 hours in the ER. And with Kaiser they have Hospitals and Clinics to go to. When I had an issue with one of the staff at Kaiser I could always ask for a supervisor. Can't do that at Scan. Scan is not accountable for anything. It makes me ask this question to all of you. Does anyone at Scan have Scan as their Health care provider? You can see there are a lot of negative reviews of Scan and I am sure there are plenty more that their older customers wish they could make known. I'm reading the reviews, and am actually quite surprised. My experience with Scan has been Very different. I have an Excellent doctor, who I can get an appointment with at the drop of a hat. I've been in for back pain, and other concerns. I received Excellent treatment, with my doctor. He's the the first insurance doctor I've had who actually gives a rats behind. He takes the time to actually listen to me, and than takes action to get me well. I was sent to physical therapy, which was also covered by Scan. Great Therapist! . My prescriptions are covered, with No hassles. Most importantly, I've been to the emergency room Twice this year, for the first time in my life. The co pay was $65.00, ambulance paid for, and my care at my hospital was excellent. Three day stay, and out, with no billing hassles, or bs. Customer service calls are always helpful, and I find the people at Scan quite helpful. Maybe it's because I had another health care provider through my employer who royally Sucked!!! You'd have to see your Primary, than be transferred to other, "Specialist's," before they would probably deny what you needed anyway. I''ve not experienced this here. I guess I picked the right doctor. Pick your doctor carefully, and I think you'd be quite pleased. Oh, I've Never received Any kind of letter from Scan, threatening to cancel me. I have Scan Classic as my medicare advantage plan and i have literally spent approximately 70 hours of my time trying to resolve an issue and I haven't received satisfactory resolution to my problem. I joined Scan so that I can receive behavior health (without a copay) and I have had endless problems having my concerns addressed. Scan refers me the subgroup Apple care, whom they say is in charge of my concerns with regard to my services. They say that the appeal and grievances are addressed by Scan. I took my grievence to Tabiana, the head of the appeal and greivances department and she said my grievance has been noted, but i never received a response from someone higher up at Scan. Basically, I was first referred to Windstone Behavior Health and I had a lousy therapist and after giving that therapist more than enough chances, I was switched to Harbor Psychology where i encountered an even more incompetent therapist. Now, I am with a different provider and he is providing me with good counseling. Windstone and Harbor Psych included many false statements in my notes and I have been trying to get my concerns addressed and also, I tried to talk with people at Scan about not continuing their relationship with these two organizations. Scan puts the blame on subgroup Apple Care and they tell me that Scan is responsible for addressing my concerns. I have spent the last six months try to get my concerns addressed and I am unable to receive a response from someone higher up at Scan to assist. read more

First, they are suppose to be for Seniors, yet the policy of the Lakewood IPA is to give Seniors a longer wait time than for all other clients for the approval of referrals -- can we all say "age discrimination?" Second, they pull bone-headed stunts such as denying treatment from a provider when the patient is in the middle of a treatment and providing a referral to a provider which does NOT do the procedure -- the end result? The patient is harmed because there is NO treatment while the denial is under appeal. Thank you, again, Lakewood IPA...you suck to the max! Does anyone know when open enrollment starts! I need to get off of Scan Medicare Advantage! I have had more issues with them in the 6 months I have been enrolled that 29 years with Blue Cross. I wanted dental and they said I had to sign up within the first 2 months to look in the book . I told them my wife nor I ever received a book and I did not see that requirement on my online page. A woman called and said she could show me where. I am thinking it is too late now and it should have been right up front easy to find. I am not sure where they get their doctor's from. One tells me to get off Scan and go to Humana. (I should have listened).He also without a check up drastically reduced my meds ordered by specialists. The second doctor said lets set up a physical I want to stick my finger up your ass!! I was admitted into the hospital with chest pains. The cardiologists wanted a follow up visit. I go to a 3rd doctor for a referral and I got referrals for a urologist and tests. But nothing for the cardiologist. I had to call back and they said they did not put in the referral. I told them that was the main reason I came. Using the vision plan is no fun either. I get an eye test and the prescription for glasses was bad. The optometrist would not do a retest and said the glasses were good. I told her I could not use them that it literally hurt my eyes. I wanted to get a second opinion but was told I would have to pay since I used my one checkup per year. I cannot believe this. The doctor gets paid for incompetence and I have to pay. I put in a protest but it takes at least 30 days. So I go without glasses! read more

Need a referral to see my Opthamologist and Primary can't get me in to for a referral until mid to end of this week:( UNACCEPTABLE and SCAN told me to go to urgent care, where I know I will see either a PA or Nurse practitioner...for generalized 'One Size Fits All care , for something that requires an Opthomologist! This is ridiculous , have vision in only one eye and Glaucoma in the other! I DO NOT SCREW AROUND WITH MY VISION, PERIOD! My trusted and established opthamologist immediately prescribed antibiotics with a phone call to her and I see her Monday..on my own $120. Once again insurance a huge failure and dangerous due to this policy! If this is SCAN's idea of safe and quality 'health care' in an urgent situation I don't need it! DO NOT FEEL SAFE at this point. So far SCAN now has 2 strikes against them in less than 9 days... it just keeps getting worse! rating would be a negative 5 if system allowed for that... primary UPDATE: AUGUST 13th I got a referral just in time for my Opthomalogist appointment this afternoon. THANK YOU CARLA! This lady cared enough to call my primary, get the referral, send it to Meritage and follow up until they approved it. Someone with SCAN saw the reviews and started the ball rolling. I still think their referral policy is dangerous but now I have my Opthamologist's office who says referrals are often slow, a week or two slow! but that they do everything they can to move the process along in urgent cases. That is a relief and knowing that SCAN agents can also step in, if they care enough to bother.One should not have to jump thru so many hoops to get good and appropriate medical care! The good news is my Opthamologist said there has been no damage to the eye:) Thankfully she called in the Prescription antibiotic eye drops Friday afternoon when I called her about the entire situation and I was able to start them Friday evening! For now SCAN Is on PROBATION and I am still not feeling completely medically safe with them, but, I'll see what happens with the One Touch testing strips issue and I have the next three months to make any changes during open enrollment......My insurance agent has been contacted am preparing for other options just in case...... read more

My Mom has been seeing a specialist regarding her hip pain who recommended certain treatment which seemed reasonable to us. SCAN denied it stating that there was no evidence supporting that treatment for that condition. So, the doctor countered with evidence showing that the treatment was appropriate. SCAN denied it again, this time stating that other treatments should be used first. We called SCAN and explained that we tried those other treatments but that they were unsuccessful. Their reply was that we should write a letter of appeal and include supporting documentation. We did just that and you guessed it; SCAN denied treatment again, with a letter whose content indicated that no one even read the last appeal. The bottom line is that my Mom continues to be in pain month after month while being denied by SCAN the treatment which experts believe would help her. Conclusion: Stay away from SCAN! They seem to be a lot more concerned about minimizing their expenditures than they are about providing health coverage. read more

I had actually written him two times, and neither time he or any of his staff had the decency of responding to me...utterly disgusting. My husband and I have been SCAN members for two years. We've been on Medicare for four years and when our UCLA HMO moved to SCAN, so did we. We receive the same care as we did from the insurance provided by my husband's employer but instead of $450 per paycheck ($900 a month) we pay $187 a month (we're both still working and premiums are income sensitive). My complaint about SCAN is the incessant nannying in which they engage. They telephone me or my husband more than once a week to nag us about taking prescriptions, getting tests, etc. We're old, not dead. We have lives. We have careers. We do not need coddling. We need not to be annoyed, interfered with, interrupted, or otherwise communicated with unless we initiate the communications. I feel harassed by SCAN's continuous interfering calls which persist despite my requests they stop. I have been downright rude to the SCAN callers, something I deeply regret since it is not my nature. But they call at work, they call as I'm putting dinner on the table, they call when we're watching a movie. If our HMO accepted another Medicare Advantage company, we would happily say "good-bye" to SCAN and I will happily raise that issue with our treatment team to see if they will explore alternative insurers. In the meantime, we have no problem with the insurance. We have zero co-pay. Our prescriptions are all covered and with minimal co-pays. My husband takes advantage of the included gym membership. We have obtained timely appointments and referrals and are very happy with our physicians. If SCAN can get their act together regarding not sending us monthly advisements that our premiums for dental and vision aren't paid when they are automatically paid through our bank and stop harassing us with unwanted and uninvited calls, we'd be very happy. read more

Do not sign up with this company! If you have to go to the ER or Urgent Care you will need authorization from Scan first. They will decide if you need medical treatment or not. You could end up paying the full cost of your care. I went to Urgent Care for an infected arm and was denied payment for the visit. Scan said it wasn't an Urgent Care matter. If they allow you to, you maybe able to write an appeal and hope for the best. They may also require your medical records. Do not believe the commercials on tv. Their members do not come first. It is all about the "bottom" line. I would never recommend Scan. read more

He was denied the one Cardiologist.... so he went to another doctor , who turned out to be a surgeon only.... all they could offer was group discussions in how to take care of yourself, your medicine follow up.... and other groups that have had surgery, and to discuss with one another about your surgery... I am beyond livid... I am so fed up with this insurance ...and the group Desert Oasis... if I ever hear that name again, it would be to soon.... They do nothing to follow up to help you except call you constantly, 2 times, a day, everyday.... everything is helping you to use their services only , Desert Oasis.... and they are limited and have few good doctors.... we are soon learning, that we regret this insurance.... they have done nothing to help get my husband a cardiologist doctor to for follow up after surgery....he is trying to do everything himself... and this is so totally wrong... we have all the wrong help, and he has to be seen by a doctor, before I loose him, next time.... I do NOT recommend this insurance to anyone... I have been with them for 10 years, and it wasn't till me and my husband moved out here 6 years ago, that we started having problems with the insurance and more the group, DESERT OASIS...they are the worst... they pester you , while they really don't get anything done that is truly needed... I am 71 and a long term diabetic and am losing my vision. I went to the hospital and eventually to UCI and was seen- got a diagnosis. The Medical Group (Heritage Victor Valley) is REFUSING to give me a referral to a specialist who is a member of both SCAN and Heritage VV. The doctor wants 45 minutes and Heritage will only authorize 30 minutes. This is obscene. My primary care physician cannot even get it changed. Heritage is refusing to provide me a referral- and they will not give me a reason, nor will they give my physicians office a reason. Political games being played at the expense of patient care. TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE. TOTAL FRAUD!! They insist on referring me to a group that other patients will not even go to, they are so rude and so bad. These people are totally incompetent, they are running some kind of scam (Or they would tell me why the PCP code is being denied) and they are taking my money and refusing me service. I had a phone interview with someone from HR about an entry level CSR position and the woman interviewing me was very rude and uncaring. I see that those who have employment seem to get off on talking down to candidates that are seeking entry level positions. It is my honest opinion that the better your resume is the more likely you will NOT be hired at SCAN. They are lots of talented, educated and professional people who are out of work that can very easily outperform the current staff at SCAN. I got SCAN through a great agent. I let him advise which plan was best for my needs while being inundated with massive amounts of mail and phone calls. Had never heard of SCAN yet I went with them. I picked Doctors myself. I have the classic plan with Desert Oasis Medical Group. What is striking, is that SCAN calls often concerning my health and programs/facilities that are available. Scan Health Medicare Advantage plan has saved my life on more than one occasion. First, my doctor noted an increase in my prostate PSA marker in a routine blood test. She referred me to a urologist who took a biopsy and sure enough I had cancer of the prostate. I was offered all of the usual treatments and chose laparospic removal of the prostate. This was done 8 years ago and I am completely free of cancer. Cured! Second, Scan recommended a colonoscopy which revealed some 14 polyps, some of them precancerous. After that I had a colonoscopy every two years revealing more smaller polyps until the last two colonoscopies in which I had no more polyps. Saved from colon cancer! My cardiologist monitors my carotid arteries for an increase in plaque, monitors heart performance and medicates my blood pressure to normal levels. Third, I experienced my feet going numb while walking, to the extent that I had to either sit down every 20 yards or so, or lean against something to prevent falling due to loss of feeling in my feet. I was wheelchair bound! My back surgeon diagnosed "spinal stenosis" from an MRI. He performed laparospic surgery on my back, removed a bone spur that was impinging on my spinal cord and cleaned up three vertebrae. Very short recovery and now my feet are normal, no back pain and I am able to do pretty much everything without a problem. Saved from a wheelchair! I suddenly became disabled recently and had a significant battery of tests. Since I can NOT walk and am in a wheelchair, my doctor ordered PHYSICAL THERAPY when the tests proved to be positive for the patient. Although PHYSICAL THERAPY was ordered as early as May 6, 2013, I HAVE NOT HAD ONE SECOND OF PHYSICALTHERAPY to date. I feel like I am slowing dying because I HAVE MORE THAN 35 DAYS WIHOUT ANY PHYSICAL THERAPY. Why would they do this to a senior citizen? read more

I was very happy with this insurance for the first year. I had one prescription which cost me $20 for a 3 month supply. The second year they reclassified it and it now costs me $140. I am changing companies ASAP. No help, no support, no explanation. read more

I have been a member of scan insurance plan for the last 7 years. I just don't understand all the negatives from current members concerning drs. co pay and other issue. First we pick the medical group. Fortunately I picked memorial care medical group. The drs here are wonderful especially Fred balguma he really cares for his patients . It could be the medical group and not scan who is causing the problems . I have a basic hmo plan with scan. The premiums are paid by Medicare . I have no co payments for my primary physician no co payment for specialist drugs are minimal $5.00 at most. No co payment for urgent care. $75.00 for ER I have no problem seeing a dr on short notice. Note I had heart failure 5 years ago and I was admitted and stayed in critical care for 7days with a battery of specialist looking out for me. The bill had to be at least $100k. Guess what my out of pocket was? It was $0 The only out of pocket I paid was $75.00 for the ambulance service. I'm really puzzled by the bad reviews I've seen on Scan??? I am dismayed by some of the reviews here. I have Scan and am with Scripps. I was told sometime ago by Scan and Scripps both that it is up to the Drs. Group to approve or deny a treatment not Scan. This does not seem to be understood by many of the reviewers. I have not been denied any treatment or service including intensive care for a heart condition I developed. I would definitely consider looking into a different group if you are getting denied treatments or do not like the condition of the facilities. Let Scan know about your providers, they can't do anything about them unless they know. I have received excellent care from both Scan and Scripps. Right now I am being seen by some of the best doctors San Diego has to offer. read more

Can't get in to see the doctor. Treat with symptoms, not causes. Do not get test results EVER. Can't get flu shot until LATE in the season. Very unresponsive at the highest levels. Although the telephone contact people are very sweet, they have no power to make anything happen. I'm switching providers. read more

I have been a SCAN member since qualifying for Medicare, and had been very happy with them. However, when planning for a vision test for new glasses in June, 2017 I discovered I needed a "medical eye exam" (Opthalmology). Due to the fact I was in Arizona I called SCAN, explained the problems I was having (will go into that later), and was told I needed to go to Urgent Care. I did so that very day. I explained to the doctor that while driving to Flagstaff I had been unable to see which way the freeway was curving, and had to slow down all the way to 25 mph (dangerous, yes?), and when I exited the freeway in Flagstaff I was unable to see the lines for the individual lanes of the streets. The doctor gave me as much of an eye test as he was able to, even asking me to look at things in the office and tell him what I could see - not much! He was so concerned that he personally got on the phone to an Opthalmologist close by, insisted to the staff that the Doctor call him back, and, even though it was a Friday afternoon, got me in for an appt. The Opthalmologist was so concerned with the results of his examination, that he sent me to talk immediately to the staff of the eye-surgeon who performed the particular surgery I needed. They scheduled me for the surgery for the next available appt - he did those surgeries every two weeks at that facility - and for the next appt date after that for the other eye. They sent all the information to SCAN about 1 1/2 weeks before the surgery date. After 5 p.m. the EVENING BEFORE THE SURGERY I was advised by SCAN that they would not cover the surgery. I had to send an urgent email to the facility so that the surgeon's staff would see the info the next morning when they came in to work. Let me explain the surgery: I had cataract surgery a number of years ago, very successfully I might add, and apparently there's this condition than can occurr after cataract surgery that badly affects the eyesight, due to a space being created behind the new lens and the space filling in with "stuff" - I don't remember exactly. So, SCAN was sent all the information; I personally spoke to numerous people at SCAN and explained my problems very specifically. I was told that the only way I could have any kind of surgery "out of the network" was if it was "an emergency". My question of "I'm in another state, I have to drive home, and you don't think that not being able to see which way the freeway is curving is an emergency?". The procedure I needed is called 'YAG Capsulotomy"; I was refused 3 appeals. Then to add insult to injury, the letter I received from M. Deykayla in Appeals, iterated that "cataracts are not an emergency", indicating that he or she did not even understand what the problem was (still is), and did not know what a "YAG Capsolotomy" is. Even though I had stressed that I had a working commitment in Arizona until late September, they sent me a referral to an Eye Clinic in Long Beach. I AM ON MEDICARE, which is a Federal Program, and yet the Appeals organization, Maximus Federal, sided with SCAN. They too apparently have incompetents working for them but if SCAN had done their job, no appeals would have been necessary. From the time the surgery was denied, I was unable to go out in the evenings, and I had to drive back to California on a schedule that made sure I was not driving after dusk. I am totally disgusted wtih SCAN for everything they put me through, and now I find out there's even a problem getting to see the doctor who originally did my cataract surgery, and who I like very much, and, more importantly, trust with my eye care. I hope someone with some authority, and some medical sense READS this and doesn't just "scan" it in order to justify their decisions. read more

I was a member of SCAN for a approximately year and 1/2. It all sounded good what they offer. I have a very difficult time walking, I am a 62 year old man. My primary care physician, referred me to a neurologist. That referral was denied sever times. Then finally after several appeals, I was allowed to see a neurologist. That neurologist wanted to do a nerve conductivity test on my legs and an MRI on my brain. Both those tests were denied and no amount of appeals allowed the tests to be performed. The neurologist actually performed the nerve conductivity test -- with no cost to me. He wanted to show SCAN/Regal Medical group that the electrical impulses did not make it from my brain to my legs... and to demonstrate the need for a MRI. The MRI was even denied after that. It seems to me SCAN/Regal Medical Group has no moral compass. I am a Medie Medie so I was able to switch "mid stream" to Easy Choice. My primary care physician referred me to a neurologist, right off the bat I saw a neurologist and the MRI was approved immediately. With the results of the MRI the neurologist diagnosed me with MS. I will be starting my drug therapy shortly. My current neurologist said had I received earlier treatment for my MS, my motor skills could have been preserved at that point. The sad thing is, what I have lost in the way of motor skills cannot be recovered. Had SCAN/Regal Medical Group approved the tests, I could have received treatment earlier with less loss of my walking ability. read more

As soon as open enrollment comes around I will be switching back to my other insurance. I've had issues with medications since I started with them and now I am stuck without some of my medication..No one seems to know what they're talking about ,so you get many different answers to the same question.At the other plan I never experienced any thing like this. My frustration with what has been known around here as SCAM healthcare has truly been damaging to my health. The anxiety of having to call them and deal with the personel always raises blood pressure. This is not the place for details, but each issue I've made attempts to resolve only became more complicated and were never successful. After absorbing 50% increases in fees one might think member service quality might have improved. This past week proved that wildly inaccurate. It wouldn't be sufficient to simply quit, to locate an alternative. It requires something more...like getting this information out beyond Yelp. My most recent letter will copy relevant Medicare offices and folks up the line at SCAM. Otherwise they will just 'disappear' the paper as they have done earlier with me. read more
