This plan covers transportation for elderly patients to visit their doctor. BEWARE that they hire untrustworthy drivers. My 91 year old mother was taken to the wrong address and dumped there. I was on the phone for hours with Scan and they left her there for 3 1/2 hours. The original taxi service never came back. Finally a Lyft driver picked her up and took her home because she missed her appointment and was in bad shape physically. The next day I called Scan to reschedule and asked for the medical transport service this time that she was familiar with. I was informed by the supervisor, Johnny, that since she only uses a walker she has to take a taxi again. How Cruel. SCAN Transportation service for wheelchair patients is TERRIBLE!!! On several occasions I have waited for my arranged transportation to show up and they never did. They also were not courteous enough to let me know that no one was coming. On other occasions they have been a half an hour late to an hour late picking me up. I have also been left waiting in parking lots for 1 1/2 hours and 2 hours on another occasion after my Dr. apppointment. I have used several of the contracted transportation services and I have not found a decent one yet. Britos, MODA and Express Transportation have all provided BAD service in the past. When I ask SCAN representatives to let me talk to Upper Management I received a response that they did not know who their upper management was. On another occasion I was transferred to Upper Management but was left on hold for more then 15 minutes. I have had to reschedule countless appointments due to their inability to show up or pick me up in time. The contracted drivers do not always comply with the hands free law with cell phones. They also speed to get you to the Dr. when they have shown up late. This is nerve racking especially when you are sitting backwards in one of their vans. I signed up for SCAN 1 1/2 ago after retiring as I could still stay within my network, from my old insurance co. I could use my current Drs . and Hoag Hosiptal , if needed. It was a simple change over . The SCAN employees were very helpful and knowledgeable and very pleasant. I've had to see a couple of specialist since signing up and also had a minor outpatient surgery with $0.00 out of pocket. I can't judge anything about perscriptions or dental, so not sure how good those $ are. I had recommended SCAN to 3 other retirees , who researched for their needs and then signed up! read more

I just switched to Scan health care. The doctors in the selection list are the same as my other plan. But I choose another doctor, she is very nice and is the only doctor that I have never have to wait for hours. Choosing a doctor is the key issue, good or bad is depending on your luck. Prescriptions are charged with small fees where I used to pay nothing on my previous health plan. But, Scan includes Slilversneaker membership which I can use the membership to join LA Fiftness and 24 Hours fitness clubs for free. I am happy with the Scan doctor, the LA Fitness and the 24 Hours fitness clubs. read more

My 91 year-old father was discharged prematurely from a rehab facility after having had two surgeries within a week of each other. I appealed through SCAN's sub contractor appeals department. Appeal DENIED. They reported that the rehab facility staff physician agreed with the discharge date. My father ended up on life support the very day he was discharged, due to a pulmonary embolism. His life support was removed approximately 3 weeks later. I lost my wonderful, life-loving dad right before Christmas. Prior to his two (successful) surgeries, my father was living alone, driving, traveling...enjoying life. I honestly do not know if there's culpability here, but I intend to find out. Today I called the number on my SCAN health card. I have an ingrown toenail and needed an Urgent Care Facility since my SCAN doctor takes two weeks for a visit. I have a hearing issues and not only was the operator not knowledgeable about issues, she spoke very fast and I asked her to slow down several times so I can understand her words. She did slow down but then immediately started increasing the speed. Suspect the call center are on the clock with a schedule amount of calls per hour. After several phone calls did get the number of the Urgent Care local unit I can visit in my area. This Insurance was recommended by an Insurance salesperson. Will switch to Kaiser ASAP. read more

I just turned 65 and joined SCAN after talking to a healthcare adviser. These was a HUGE mistake. If you join SCAN you will literally receive third world medical care. I can't believe that Medicare A and B is accepted by the best doctors at UCI and Hoag but the SCAN Medicare "advantage" plan will lock you out of those choices. What are all you people talking about, I have never had any problem with Scan Health Plan, I would think its the area you live and the doctors you have chosen I have Greater Newport and all the doctors are wonderful, never a problem getting in to see a doctor on short notice. If you want a really horrible senior insurance go with AARP's United Health that is the absolute worst insurance I have ever had to deal with, one moron after another. read more

My elderly mother used to have SCAN coverage. When she was healthy it seemed great. She got to go to the same doctors she'd had for years and she was happy. Then in July of 2008 she had a pretty bad stroke. She was sent to a seemingly great rehab center with truly great physical, occupational and speech therapists. The MDs at the place seemed like real schlubbs, but the therapists and support staff were great. We were told she could stay up to 100 days as long as her recovery progresses and she doesn't plateau. Sounds fair. But the fact is that it was a SCAN/SCAM! They discharged her after 23 or so days, saying she'd plateaued. All her therapists, nurses and even orderlies kept saying how much progress she was making. One orderly kept saying; "I hope they let her stay." Why wouldn't they? They have that 100 day rule. It turns out no-one getting rehab is allowed to stay over 30 days. The MDs were evil little puppets of SCAN and they said she was "custodial," even though anyone with reasonably functioning eyes and ears could tell she was getting much better every day. One PT at the next place she stayed - who was not allowed to work on her - said; "Oh, my uncle had SCAN, it seemed fine until he got sick, then we switched him off of SCAN as soon as we could." Long story short is that she died 7 months later. I would highly discourage anyone from using SCAN and if you or someone you care about is with them, switch to something else. United Health Care, the ones that AARP endorses, seems pretty good. read more

I can't speak for the complete SCAN experience but for my in-laws' part of it. I absolutely believe that the quality of care you receive depends on the continuity of doctor care. I totally agree with the negative reviews if the wrong dr. group is chosen. It is prudent for all of those who get SCAN to investigate thoroughly the Physician group they choose and even the doctors within a certain office, the wait times, the amount of time it takes to get an appointment, and the quality of care. My in-laws have been with SCAN for over 30 years with a particular Dr. group. My mother-in-law received negligent care and ended up dying needlessly of bladder cancer even though she had been complaining to her Dr. about her problem over 2 years. It wasn't until I got involved that she was allowed to see a urologist and by then it was too late. Note to friends and family -- get involved. I complained to upper management within the Dr. group. The doctor was gone within the month; my dear mother-in-law was gone within 6. Recently, the care within the office my father-in-law was connected with has deteriorated markedly. Again, for the third time in a year, my father-in-law has been referred to a new physician when he could not wait for 2 hours for a schedulted appointment to see the results from his physical from a doctor he had been assigned in January who was seeing clients for his last week with the dr group (which was another thing of which Dad had not been informed). The wait to see a new dr? A month. I finally interfered which I should have done years ago and got Dad transferred to a doctor at my doctor's office who is from the same doctor group as his old dr. but a different office (confusion reigns when the Dr. groups start being swallowed by each other) and comes highly recommended. Wait time? 3 days. When you're 96, there is little wait time when you arrive, and you only have to wait 3 days for an appointment, it's time to break out the happy dance. My point is -- the quality of care you receive varies even within the doctor groups who serve SCAN. It behooves both recipients and family to investigage the quality of care each doctor gives and to make an informed choice. read more

"SCAM" it is. The support staff is egregiously incompetent and rude. I need to see a specialist. My Dr.'s referral was denied. She told me she was going to look into it. When I hadn't heard anything for 6 weeks, I left a message for a support staff person about it. I never heard from her. Someone from a patient support team called about something else. I told her about the referral problem. Lisa from the Referral Dept. left me a message. I returned it 3x in 2 weeks with no response, so I called the team again. Lisa called me immediately. When I politely asked her why she hadn't returned my calls, she ignored me. She told me that I would have to jump through hoops (my words) for them to even consider a specialist. I don't have the health to continue to wade through the morass of unprofessionalism that is SCAM. Kaiser Medicare Advantage has a 5 star rating with U.S. News & World Report. It is for plans that have at least 4.5 stars. SCAM wasn't on it. I am signing with them. read more

My recommendation is similar to other posts here. In my case I requested to visit a specialist that is associated with SCAN, but out of my local network. I was told by SCAN to submit an out of network request (which was subsequently denied) or transfer to another PCP network 50 miles away from my home and attempt to get a referral that way. With no explanation, one day I received a referral to a local Dr. that doesn't perform the same procedure as the requested specialist in their network provides, followed by the denial letter weeks later. I appealed the original denial with detailed reason/logic and received a form letter from SCAN stating that their decision was "right" and your appeal is denied. It's now going to another reviewer called MAXIMUS to be re-evaluated. During the course of this, I received 2 phone calls from the Grievance Dept. (most recently from April) asking me to call them. My phone calls were "never returned" and after numerous attempts I was unable to speak to these individuals, only getting their voicemail. Dealing with this company is turning into an exercise in frustration. My out of pocket cost to see this SCAN specialist was quoted at $360 yet this organization spends many hours denying the request and is putting this plan holder through untold red tape. For simple routine care, SCAN was OK but be careful if you ever need or desire to see someone out of your network, even if they are affiliated with SCAN. They're rapidly pushing this customer away from using them as a Health Care provider and after reading these posts, I would not want to be in a situation where I needed care for a life-threatening situation as it's my feeling that SCAN wouldn't be there for you. read more

Do not be fooled by the positive reviews. I was diagnosed with Bladder cancer this year. I called all available specialists in my area. Either I was told they were no longer accepting SCAN or the wait for an appointment was two months. If I had not called member services and demanded a supervisor and demanded that they initiate an appointment I might be dead. Scan stinks. Ok the plan in my opinion and ive been a member going on 3 years is ok. However I think the customer service reps in many case need a bit more training. For example I had a simple question about a medication and it took 6 separate phone calls to get help. I was told they would research and call me back NEVER HAPPENED I then was told a supervisor would call me back that too NEVER HAPPENED so although the plan itself is good I think many of the customer service reps need more training, maybe on an on going basis? read more

The first Doctor Office I selected would not do anything to cure my Venus Ulcer and referred me to the Emergency Room where I waited for 8 Hrs. and never received medical attention. The current doctor I switched to last year told me I had high blood pressure and when I returned in seven days for an examination the doctor told me my blood pressure was fine and he examine my Venus Ulcer and told me everything was fine and never gave me a follow up appointment. 2017 I was transported to Emergency Hospital and found out I have type two diabetics and my venous Ulcer is critical. My doctor never told me I was diabetic. I was assigned home nurse service and the Home Nurse Service told me if I did not agree to have their Doctor see me at my home I would not be able to have home nurse service and it was cancel. I wrote a detail letter to Scan management and they sent me a letter accusing me of not taking my diabetic pills. When I called my doctor office to find out if I needed to see the doctor to get a refill the nurse told me the Pharmacist told her I was not eligible to get more pills because I had taken too many. Therefore, how can I take pills I do not have. Scan did not read my detail letter because they assumed I was complaining about discrimination which I never mention in my letter. If you are very sick and unable to complain you will have problems receiving medical attention because my Doctor office told me they have no control over the Home nurse service. But of course they do by not paying money to them. Beware of Scan. read more

No problem getting doctors apt, no problem with prescriptions , always a friendly voice when I call for information. I changed from another ins. This is a GREAT health plan! I only wished that I was old enough to join. Their focus is on Seniors and you can definitely see it that they have a different approach. My mom has been a member for many years and would never go anywhere else. That isn't to say she hasn't been to other plans...oh, no! We spent our time fighting with Kaiser, FHP (back in the day), Secure Horizons and Cigna. They are pretended to focus on senior services but NEVER delivered. When you call SCAN you get a friendly voice on the other end and they bend over backwards to help. I can never get a hold of anyone at my health plan the first time I call. I cannot figure my way through the computerized agent they have so I am forced to either push a button, leave a message or service myself on their limited website. Never once has that happened with SCAN. She has had to use their services a lot in the past and her cost have been very minimal....she does not have a deductible only small copays...I think like $5 to see the doc and about the same for medications...some of her medications are actually totally free. I wish that were the case with my plan. Oh, and I should mention that she was once charged for a service she wasn't supposed to be and when I called they took care of it...we didn't have to handle it ourselves which almost made me hit the floor. The girl, I want to say her name was Jackie took all the info and about a day or two later I got a call from the same girl and all had been taken care of. I had the same experience with my insurer and I have been bounced around...after waiting 3 days for a return call from the insurer they said I had to call the doctor and the COLLECTION AGENCY myself! Yes, my credit is being damaged and they could not care less! What is insurance supposed to be for anyway if you have to worry about paying the bill to prevent damaging your credit??? All HMOs should be forced to operate like SCAN and we would all be better off for it. My next review will be for my own plan and it won't be 5 stars for sure! Not only is my mom on SCAN but most of my aunts and uncles are too...My mom lives in the OC and my aunts and uncles are scattered everywhere from Victorville to San Francisco so there plan is large and there are plenty of doctors and even when visiting her sister in another state my mom was covered. One last RAVE before closing....my mom recently had to have a test at a specialized facility, there are only a few places that do this test and the nearest to us was like 30 miles away and she had to stay overnight....guess what???? SCAN sent a driver to pick her up and take her the 30 miles to the test. In the morning they had a driver waiting to take her home. It took one call to their customer service department and the whole thing was set up....the best part???? It didn't cost her one cent! What more can you ask for in a health plan? read more

I have been with SCAN health plan for the past 6 months. Selecting a PCP is not bad because there is quite bit of choice. But getting approvals to see a specialist is some thing else. The Primary care doc has to send a referral, then it may take 5 - 7 working days for the referral to be approved or denied. When they do approve the referral, most of the time, the specialists they contract with are very sub standard people. I got referrals for a urologist, orthopedic, and a dermatologist. All of them were very unsatisfactory. In fact the dermatologist, Dr. Hala Kudsi performed a unnecessary biopsy procedure on my neck thinking that I am some one else with a PPO insurance (her staff handed her the wrong patient folder who had a PPO insurance). These people should look at the patient reviews before signing up the specialists. I had enough of this circus. Luckily I am in a reasonably good health but if I should fall sick and hospitalized or need nursing home care, I have very little confidence in their specialists or services. It is a shame that they contract with Medicare and provide such sub standard service to their members. When a primary care physician gives a referral to see a specialist, why should it take 5 - 7 working days to get the approval? That layer should be completely taken out because the primary care doctor would not give a referral unless he or she deems it necessary. (I was with Kaiser prior to this and there is no approval layer there. The PCP gives referral to a specialty dept and in fact THEY call you in a day or two to make the appointment). And after you get the approval to see the specialist, you call the specialist office and most of the time, they cannot see you for several weeks or months and you may probably get a lot sicker or may even die by the time you get to see the specialist. And the emergency is not so great either because they do not have the specialists there and you may have to get referred again through the painful channels. Yes, Scan's premiums are low but their procedures are awful, so if you can afford it, ditch SCAN and get the regular medicare with some supplement plan and you will have your choice of doctors., read more

This is a warning to all who are considering joining SCAN. Just as most of the reviews, there is a real problem with this company which is in charge of taking care of our elderly. I especially have to agree with Gabriel, in order to get care you need to be close to death. My 85 year old grandmother has been denied 3 times for items to which medicare would not deny for her care. A hospital or bed rails, which you would think would be provided since she is bed ridden, unable to care for herself. In addition knowing she has a history of falling off her bed and breaking her leg on at least twice. Then denying her in-home psychical therapy for the broken leg which was caused from falling off the bed. Lastly, denying her short term care in a rehabilitation nursing home for her broken leg. To which, she had a doctor's note requesting that it would be in her best interest until she can care for her own. We went through proper channels and had all the paperwork necessary for all our request and now we have to appeal which can take another 30 days for them to tell us yes or no. The bureaucracy that this company puts you through is outrageous and healthcare shouldn't be this hard for the elderly. Luckily my grandmother has my aunt and myself on her side, I wonder how many other people are in the same predicament. I have advised my aunt to dis-enroll her in the SCAN program and put her in another medicare program, since this is the time period to do so until Feb 14. read more

My 93 year old mother, who has had MS for over 50 years and now suffers from 2 forms of dementia, broke her right femur. SCAN worked fine for the emergency room and hospital stay, but once discharged to a Skilled Nursing facility, it became apparent how bad SCAN is. The Orthopedic Surgeon at the hospital stated in a written directive, that he wanted to see her in 4 weeks after her discharge. His directive stated that he would be caring for her under a 90 day global period for the initial diagnosis and treatment. After 3 weeks and no appointment being made by the SCAN director at the the SNF, we were told that he was not part of the SCAN plan and that we could not see him. We were told to contact her Primary Care Physician, who would then request an appointment with an Orthopedist through SCAN. Finally, an appointment came through......with an Orthopedic HAND specialist!!! We contacted the original Orthopedist who again stated the 90 day global period and told us to come in right away. We were there the next morning and received the follow up care my mother needed which was a replacement of the long leg splint received at the hospital, with a better fitting long leg splint from her toes to her hip. 7 days later we told she is being discharged from the SNF because she can't stand on her right leg and therefore cannot due the physical therapy the SNF says she needs. I ask, could you stand on a leg that you broke 4 weeks earlier in a splint that covered your foot to your hip. Good luck! So, ok we move her to a facility that we pay the full cost of so that she can continue to recover. Today we received notice that SCAN won't pay for the replacement splint because the PCP did not do the replacement or authorize the replacement. Mind you the PCP was fully aware of the replacement. What tell me SCAN, we re we not to continue to see the Orthopedic who was seeing her under the 90 global period? Were we to go back to your hand specialist only to have them turn us away.. AGAIN? SCAN, sometimes you have to do what is best for the patient and that does not appear to be anywhere in your mindset. SCAN does not lookout for the best interest of the patient, they look out for what is best for SCAN! read more

I'm shocked to read the poor reviews! I've been with SCAN for 5/6 years and have not had one problem. I knew what the plan was before I signed up so there were no surprises. I continued with the same PCP and specialists I've had for 20+ years w/o a hitch. However, I will be leaving SCAN this year. With back problems last year, I improved this year until June when I realized I needed to have the surgery. The surgeon I was comfortable with had no appointments available in August and then he was off for a three week vacation. With possible urgent surgery, my PCP did not want me to wait and scheduled me to see another surgeon who I didn't want but had no choice unless I wanted to wait until the end of September to see my choice surgeon, which I did. Scary at times, but I waited and all went well. He had me in surgery 10 days after my office visit. I don't want to go through something like that again with any health issue so I'm leaving the HMO world. Other than that, SCAN is a great choice. read more

My elderly parents have been SCAN members for over 10 years. We have always received great service, over the phone (they have 24 hour nurse hotline available if you need it) and physician services including specialists have always been provided in a prompt, friendly, and caring manner. My folks are in the San Gabriel valley (Pasadena, Arcadia) California area - maybe that group is just extra good. Unfortunately ever since Obama has been in office, some of the benefits such as in home help and frozen meals were discontinued. The benefits that were substituted such as a gym membership, are NOT useful for my 89 year old mother. We needed the in-home help services that included things like laundry, light housekeeping, bathing assistance, etc. Now we have to pay out of pocket for that stuff. read more

I need to let everyone scan is for sucks! Its a fraud ,false advertising , commercials say ; we are different we answer the phone with a real live person. LIES, you get a recording and then music wait time up to six mins. on hold. And each time they send you to someone else, well starting from the gate again , no information goes to the next person. Why they give you an identification number , is beyond me ! I will offer to give it and they say well okay you may give that to me but it does not help one bit, so why have it? My average call to them last at least 30 mins or more only to hang up frustrated .No two reps give you the same answer. Nobody knows anything for sure. Even when I ask for supervisor one Rojellio knew anything about me or the subject. Why is that? Does not information get sent to the next person? Get a new system please .Omg when I needed to just cancel a transportation ride it took 20 mins. Plus it did not get done! I gave up. Maybe because Iam poor and cannot afford to enroll in a better plan that you are treated so bad but more like incompetence Its a nightmare!!! I hate those commercials that say such lies Scan is for Scam! Plus be prepared to get ton and tons of mail from, At least 25 pieces of mail per month, which does not help you at all. I have been with Scan for 2 years and have had no complaints. My doctors office is in Manhattan Beach and I can always get same day treatment. I have called Scan with questions and have either received the answer on that call or have received a same day call back with the answer. I have never used their ride to the doctor service I have seen people that are "not with Scan" who have waited out in the cold for over 40 minutes for their ride. read more

I filed a complaint with Scan regarding the nursing facility billing my mother incorrectly this has been going on since May 5, 2015. The nursing facility did admit to the Grievance section that we have been bill incorrectly. Don't pay the bill, you have a zero balance. Well I received a call on March 10, 2016 from the business manager that a bill has been mailed and to disregard. I have proof because his message went into voice mail. I receive the actual billing statement on 03/17/2016. I need to file another Grievance because they deceived me, my mother the member and the insurance company Scan . I don't trust the Grievance department to truly investigate and resolve this. The facility did not make the corrections on their billing system because once again on received a bill via mail 03/17/16. This is elder financial abuse. And harassment. read more

I am actually writing this review on behalf of my 91-year old mother. She has had SCAN for many years and when she was mobile, all was great! Now that she is immobile and unable to go down a flight of stairs to leave her condo to get to the Dr's office, they are IMPOSSIBLE to work with. Now, I'm speaking for the Dr's office who (in reality) respresents SCAN. She currently has a small bedsore so we requested either medication or a nurse to come look at it before it gets real bad. The Dr's office would not send a nurse out. Said she needed to go to the Dr's office....even if it's by ambulance. I've definitely learned that I WILL NOT have SCAN when I retire (which is sad because prior to her immobility, I thought they were great). read more

For the third year in a row I am fighting with SCAN to receive a Maximum Out of Pocket letter and reimbursement of monies overpaid. As of mid-March 2015 I had paid nearly $3600 out of pocket for my husband. Max out of pocket on his plan is $3200. For the past 4 months I have spoken with many customer service reps - none of whom is willing or able to help me resolve this issue. Many have assured me they will research and call me back - doesn't happen. I've never dealt with such an inept business in my entire life. Stay way far away. They will assign you a medical group that will put your health at the the bottom at the expense of their huge profits. These are sick people who put the elderly at risk. They will limit your care to physicians and health centers with whom and which they have negotiated ridiculously low payments and then limit your ability to see these losers. Scan sucks and bad. I am in Phoenix Az. My wife needed to go to urgent care center after a fall and needed an x-ray of her hip. We were overcharged $10 on the copay. It needed to be paid before services were rendered so I paid it. Getting the refund from Scan has taken many phone calls and rembersment paperwork submitted. This was 3 months ago and has not been resolved. I scheduled a appointment to see a specialist. The appointment day arrived..... and I waited 30 minutes in the waiting room. I was then taken to a exam room and after 45 min told the DR was not available. I was to see a nurse practitioner. I am not paying a specialist fee to be seen by a nurse for the diagnosis. I left seeking a new appointment. 2nd appointment same result .... and was told no record of my appointment and I would be squeezed in to see the nurse practitioner. I left and saw another DR. But I was not reimbursed for the copay fee. I filed a complaint with scan but nothing could be done they said. Nothing but thievery and robbery and substandard health care. Thank god next month I go to another company. BEWARE as if you are on medicare and sign for their plan you are stuck with it for a year till the next enrollment period. I get better service at my vet for my dog. read more
