SCAN's Explanation of Benefits shows that "As of October 31, 2024, you have had $XXXX in out-of-pocket costs that count toward your $XXXX out-of-pocket maximum for covered services for 2024." Since my out-of-pocket shows considerably more than my out-of-pocket maximum, I called SCAN a month ago to find out why. Since I didn't hear anything, I called again today. They told me that my out-of-pocket costs doesn't really mean what it says. They say that I need to go back to my previous EOBs to find charges that they covered that don't count. You can't believe what the report shows? You can't expect them to call back with explanations? The website is slow and obscure. (Have you tried to FIND the EOBs?) I've been a member for five years, but now I have to decide within the next week whether to switch plans. read more

SCAN Healthplan is an excellent company. I have been a member since 2016 and I've had great care from them. I have Multiple Myeloma cancer and have needed a lot of hospitalizations and treatments at almost no out of pocket expense. They approve my doctor's referral's, and are responsive to my questions and requests. A wonderful Medicare Advantage plan! read more

I feel I am in a minority. I was with my company plan until I went on Medicare. I picked Scan since they have my old medical group as part of their plan. The switch was invisible. Same doctors, same clinics, same everything. Only I pay medicare about $170 per month instead of $1,250 per month and I have no co-pays. Never had a problem getting anything, including some expensive name brand prescriptions. Never had a problem reaching them or anything else. A lot of this has to do with the HMO group you pick. The HMO group has much to do with how your plan is administered. Maybe some of you need to get a better HMO group. read more

Today i witnessed a senior waiting in lobby for a Scan Medical Transportation at 10am. When I returned for my scheduled appt at 3p she is the same spot, same wheelchair. I asked her was she still waiting for a ride and she said she only had Scan Medical Transportation. I called, the doctors office had called 7 times. She sat their covered in urine and feces until they pulled up. No van logos, no apologies, just her all wet and soiled. Her appt. Was for 8:45am. Does this even make since? What a broken system, a company with no pride and drivers that don't seem to have to care. read more

This update is long overdue but I'm happy to report that SCAN handled my issue professionally and in a swift manner. I'd like to give the team credit for trying their best to do right by their customers. Special thanks to Toni, Caroline and Theresa. They were all very polite and pleasant people to work with. I enjoyed being a member for the last 3 years. I never had any issues getting things approved. Their customer service in my area was top notch. Overall, I still have very positive opinions for SCAN. If you have a problem with the provider Doctor for lousy service &let the scan knows about it & file for grievance, it doesn't mean anything! Scan never follow up, you don't get response after months of calling the grievance department! I Never suggest to join this Health care. I am getting out of this mess soon. read more

SCAN so far has for the most part been a very negative experience. I am new to Medicare and have always, previously had Blue Cross Anthem PPO. The referral times are outrageously long with SCAN. It recently took 17 days to get a referral for an apnea sleep study. Once it was in the system, I had to drive over an hour to get to their only dumpy facility with questionable technicians. The report back from the study assessment doctor looked weak and uncomprehensive compared with past experiences and what I am accustomed to. Once the study was done, It went back to my primary doctor with no further instructions for obtaining a new CPAP device. It's been phone calls, confusion, lack of organization, and frustration for the past 35 days and I still do not have a new machine. They really suck. read more

Scan has operated in bad faith and stated in writing that they would pay a claim and then did not do so. Their own correspondence is contradictory and demonstrates that they have acted in bad faith. I have filed two grievances with Scan with no resolution. read more

I feel compelled to review because the low stars here don't reflect my experience. My mother was a Kaiser subscriber and it was deny deny deny and they consistently get 5 stars. SCAN is WYSIWYG. You have to know how to navigate & be an informed consumer esp of medical care. I chose them because they are local and non-profit, with a buyback option. Typical HMO except they answer the phones, and care about service. If I need care in a hurry I can use urgent care for no copay. They even have virtual visits. I chose MemorialCare as my provider and my PCP is beyond responsive & excellent, although overworked. My daughter is paying $1000 a month for Kaiser and gets nothing. I give SCAN all the stars. read more

I have been with SCAN for ten years and they have never let me down. I've had two surgeries, one of them lifesaving. SCAN made sure that I had the best care possible and paid for everything. It gives me peace of mind knowing that when I need help, SCAN is there for me with compassion and concern. I also like the extra benefits that an Advantage Plan offers. I've been a SCAN member for a few years now. I find the benefits better and no co-pay for office visits compared to other health plan providers. I have no issues with getting specialist referrals. I have worked my entire life, when changing jobs, I had to change insurance companies more often than I liked. Now, I am retired and FINALY have the best health care insurance that I ever had! When I first joined the insurance, within a few days I had to have my gall bladder removed. I was soooo worried that my co-pays would be very high = nope! Not a dime! My wife and I have both been enrolled with SCAN Classic HMO for about 14 years, and have nothing but praise for them. In that time I've had multiple hospital visits, plus many other procedures, and my wife endured two years of treatment for breast cancer. We've had no troubles getting referrals or authorizations, and been able to access great hospitals and specialists in Orange County. Plus, we've had virtually no deductibles or co-pays along the way, and hardly any reason to need to contact their office about issues. We highly recommend them! read more

Cancer has returned. for 2 weeks my doctor and other offices have been trying to find an ENT surgeon under this insurance in the SF Bay area. They can't find any. I am going to die of insurance incompetence. Beware, stay away. And if you have not joined a medicare advantage plan yet, don't. I just signed up last week with Scan with Jaime Diaz the Telesales Agent. After I signed, he said any questions I have give me a call. He gave me his name and number and the next day I had a question on adding the PPO Dental. Called three times leaving voicemail and never heard back. May now cancel Scan if this is my first experience. I guess Jaime got his commission and that was it. read more

Recently, I went to the Scan office on 3800 Kilroy Airport Way to provide the Grievance committee with some documents they had requested and also to speak with a member of the Grievance Committee. I was shocked that everyone is working from home. I was able to speak to someone through Zoom. When it came to providing them with a copy of the required documents, you would think they would have someone in their office to make a copy for us. Not at all! Not even a human being who could make a copy for us. The lady at the front desk who was the only live human being we saw referred us to a copy place a few miles down the road where we made our copies and then we returned to the Scan office to give to them. It was like going to a fortress with a moat around it. Was this the CIA or the Pentagon? No, this was the Scan office on 3800 Kilroy Airport Way. read more

We got SCAN Healthcare for my senior mom and while the home visits are convenient and works for my mom's situation, the mental health department is HORRIBLE. We had to get 5 different referrals because they kept assigning us to doctors who were not in-network. My mom needed help and no one was able to figure out how to get her a psychiatrist that was in-network. This caused our family so much stress. It's unacceptable and this healthcare plan needs to get its stuff together when it comes to mental health becuase many seniors are suffering from mental health issues. read more

I am so happy with Scan as my health insurance. They are a company that really takes care of you. Last month, I tried to refill a prescription, and my regular pharmacy told me they were out of it, and it wouldn't be in before I ran out. I take this medication twice a day, so going without it was not an option. I called Scan, and they really came through for me. They called around and found the medication at another local pharmacy. And I had the prescription in my hands in 2 hours. It was a lifesaver (and I mean that literally). read more

Everything. Their transportation for wheelchair clients is atrocious. Had a surgery date, called in enough advanced time, was confirmed by the transport people I had the ride. On surgery date at 5:30 was told they had no driver for me and that I would have to CANCEL MY SURGERY. then when I blew up was told to be professional I told them "LIKE YOU WERE ON MY APPOINTMENT?" Returning home from rehab was the same night. Was told to reschedule a ride in another 48 hours. Sad part is I had to spend 2 hours on phone with the escalation team. I made them a promise that if one more rude was missed I was taking some drastic action, you will have to wait to see. read more

A NIGHTMARE FOR ANY CUSTOMER SUPPORT. My father has been trying to dispute charges from his in-network dentist that is covered by SCAN Delta Dental for months now in regards to his dentist charging my father full price for all the dental work she has done for him while at the same time not billing SCAN Delta Dental at all. SCAN and Delta Dental know this as they have repeatedly said that they have no documentation of being billed from his dentist, and thus it would appear to SCAN that my father had no work done at all. Supporting documentation proving my fathers payment for work done to his in-network dentist has been submitted to SCAN multiple ways, one through their document portal on their website and another through SCAN's supposed Grievance And Appeals department email address and finally through their Grievances And Appeals Department email address. All attempts have apparently failed to reach the Grievance And Appeals department successfully with representatives from SCAN stating that they have yet to receive any documentation proving billing. SCAN keeps dragging this grievance on for months now even though they should have the documentation proving my father was billed. Customer service is also huge issue as well, as others have said in previous reviews; unknowledgeable, inexperienced, and they seem to have amnesia whenever you get a hold of a representative in regards to any grievance claim that you wish to resolve. SCAN Membership Services will give you the "run around" stating that you need to connect with the Grievances And Appeals Department in order to discuss your grievance in regards to documentation submitted and progress made on the grievance, but they will never provide you a way to contact them. They will provide you with conflicting time windows for contact; One representative will say that the Grievance Department will contact you within 24 hours, another representative will say they will contact you within "3 to 4 business days", and another will say that they can only directly contact you ONLY after the grievance case has been closed. They will basically say ANYTHING. These membership services representatives are VERY sly and crafty or completely incompetent (maybe on purpose to deny liability) which basically insures that no progress is made in your Grievance case. Be warned, this insurance is a NIGHTMARE for Grievances! If you value your time and money I HIGHLY recommend avoiding SCAM Health Plan as this behavior in regards to grievances appears to be purposeful and leans in the direction of malpractice if I were to give my honest opinion. read more

I had Scan for over 10 years and they were an excellent company. I never had a problem with getting something approved, ...no or low co-pays and very little to no out-of-pocket & copays plus they took less out of my Social Security check every month.. I recently had to change to United Healthcare PPO because I had to have a PPO to do a procedure and they did not accept scan. This is the worst decision I ever made. I hate United healthcare and cannot wait to change back to Scan next enrollment. read more

To date we have received approximately $17,000. BEWARE their brochures and even speaking with an agent they will say "Do not worry you are covered 100% when out of the country! True what they don't disclose is you will only get the Medicare agreed amount. THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING and not fully disclosing these facts is not OK! My wife and I have been on Scan for many years without any problems. Scan now uses CVS for their OTC plan. Worst decision ever to use CVS. Took 2 wks and several calls to fix login problem. Only 1 person per email address. Prices charged are high. For instance a pack of ramen noodles at store about .30/35 cents. At CVS $3.00. I'm sure there are many other examples. Where do I begin on this nightmare? I am poor, disabled and elderly, and I've gone from one horrific experience to the next with SCAN. Practitioners are either extremely abusive or dismissive, and, above all else, incompetent. I'm gaslighted at every turn. I have a serious condition which they summarily dismiss, without being willing to investigate it in the slightest. One doctor prescribed an incompatible med which left me with a serious brain injury. Misdiagnoses abound. I have recently been referred to a specialist whose reviews are the worst I've read: He shouts, abuses, conducts procedures in a violent manner, and leaves people waiting for hours.
