I was happy with Scan. I recently got a letter from Scan (Irene Lozano) condolences for my recent death. I'm not dead but it was my wife of 41 years who died a few months ago. I never got help after her passing. I've also have had doctors in canceled 2 days before the appointment they are no longer in the plan. If you are healthy, by all means, go SCAN. But if you get sick, beware! They go out of their way NOT to pay for legitimate care. Last year it took me over 2 months to get an approval for an MRI to check for recurrence of my cancer. They said the "system" was down, and then they lost it altogether. As I periodically need diagnostics to check for cancer, SCAN/Optum made the last two years extremely stressful and frustrating for me. I just knew if I didn't die from the cancer, I would surely succumb from the stress of dealing with this hostile, incompetent company. I also needed behavioral health. That was a joke. They told me they had no psychiatrists in the area and that their psych system was "under construction"? What? They really should be banned from administering Medicare. I switched to United Healthcare PPO and it is worth it to pay small co-pays than to have to do BATTLE with Scan/Optum just to obtain necessary treatment. Not sure where their high ratings come from. I'm so much more peaceful now that I quit SCAN knowing I have medical insurance that isn't fighting me every step of the way. Oh, yeah, they call you all the time for stupid things. Misspelled their name, should end with the letter "M", not "N". Have to give props to the customer service team, they've been universally friendly and have attempted to help. Unfortunately, they're supporting a dysfunctional health insurance provider. Every time I've attempted to use the OTC website this year, it's been broken. Attempted to use the ride service twice. First time the person I spoke to came across incredibly incompetent and actually attempted to talk me out of booking a ride. They succeeded. Second time I was sick enough it wasn't safe for me to drive but far short of a full-on medical emergency requiring an ambulance. The service refused to provide a ride. Like Diogenes looking for an honest man, I'm looking elsewhere for a competent health insurance provider. Recommend avoiding at all cost (literally!). read more

Beginning in January, 2024, I selected SCAN MyChoice as my Medicare Advantage Plan. It is the WORST insurance experience I have ever had to endure. SCAN basically does not want to pay for any benefits that are included in the plan. SCAN makes excuses such as the healthcare provider is out-of-network despite me finding the exact healthcare provider on their website specifically showing the provider in-network and SCAN providing me a list of in-network providers which specifically includes my service provider. I've had to escalate every one of my claims to SCAN's Grievance and Appeals team, however they are just as incompetent as SCAN's claims and member service teams. I have submitted complaints about SCAN to both Medicare and the Better Business Bureau. I can't wait until January, 2025, so that I can switch to a competent Medicare Advantage Plan. I don't understand how Medicare can allow such an incompetent organization such as SCAN to be sanctioned as a Medicare Advantage provider. read more

I have had SCAN for 4 years and for the most part I have been pleased. However, today I called the customer service number to change my plan to the Venture plan and was beyond shocked at the service I received. The person who I spoke with could barely read, was not at all ready to help anyone especially something as difficult to navigate as health insurance. After spending almost one hour on the phone the person to my amazement said that the Venture Plan is no longer available! So he wasted one hour of my time and didnt even have a clue that the plan he works for is no longer available! He also told me that they also no longer offer Silver Sneakers which I know was not true. After one hour of nonsense I spoke to his supervisor and was equally not qualified to answer my questions and had no idea that her employees were NEVER advised that the Venture Plan was discontinued back in January! It is unbelievable how incompetent SCAN employees are and I do not recommend purchasing insurance through them. read more

No one knows what's going on many times I have been at doctor's offices and seen people crying because they think they've been forgotten three and four hours waiting on a ride home. Don't ever try and get an answer for your covered benefits. After having to deal with three "customer advocates", for over a week, still have not been able to get issue resolved or answers to questions. Last contact, over a hour of trying to get answer, the customer advocate decided we needed prior authorization for an ultrasound at a facility approved by our medical group, informed advocate authorization was not required; but got transferred to medical group anyway and advocate did not remain on the line. The so called "customer advocates" are only there to answer basic questions for "new suckers" looking for new coverage. They don't know anything in depth and therefore cannot provide adequate informed answers. read more

SCAN medicare Scripps plan sucks. They charge $35 just to walk in the door at anyone outside your primary doctor. Tried to switch and was told I'd lose my doctor. They have none of the benefits offered on TV by every other plan and certainly don't give $148 back to you every month, no allowance at drug stores, nada, bumpkiss, squat. I needed to switch to a different type, and the change is still not resolved after 2 months. They are a Health care HMO and not honest. Their sales people, and their documentation, which is supposed to be a contract, say that emergency and urgent care situations are covered when traveling. I had an emergency requiring surgery while in another state, and they refuse to pay what I had to pay - because they refused to answer the phone when the doctor's office called to verify coverage. I have bone to bone arthritis both knees, my doctor requested a shower chair to help me shower safely and keep me from falling and it was denied. Since then I've had one knee replacement surgery and Dr has requested shower chair, foldable bedside commode, temporary wheelchair while recovering at home and if SCAN/medicare deny these items then I'm through with this no good insurance. Medicare takes your $170 every month but don't want to give you nothing. Take your money and watch you suffer. That's pitiful!! In this country we should not have to pay for Medicare!! my elderly father has medical medicare and the program scan. we took my father to the ER at Pacifica hospital on Jan. 22nd and the service was horrible my father almost die because of Pacifica's lack attention. The reason why I'm doing this review on Scan is because I called to file a complain with them and they wouldn't take it because my father was not next to me to approve it (I wasn't asking for anything because I have all his information all I wanted to do is to file a complain), I wasn't asking for anything just to file a complaint but they could't do that for me thank God we got my father out of that plan and change him to kiser. at this point I feel like any plan is better than what my dad had and pacifica and Serra are the worst. the only reason why my father stayed with them for so long is because my father hates change and he refused to change. read more

I cant wait until Monday when I start shopping for a new Advantage plan, and put Scan in my rear view mirror. What started out as promises of the amazing benefits of the Scan Advantage plan turned out to be just a bunch of typical insurance sales BS. I just was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes recently. The Hospital and Dr. provided a Gluclose test monitor so I could keep track of my glucose levels. The doctor also provided a prescription for One Touch Verio test strips. When I went to fill the prescription today the pharmacy informed me that Scan does not cover the One Touch Verio strips although regular Medicare covers them 100%. If I wanted to buy them it was $77.00. I was completely out of test strips and called Scan. The Scan representative said he was sorry but the One Touch strips are not covered under the Scan part B or D HMO plan, again covered by original Medicare. I stated to the Scan representative I was completely out of test strips. The rep said for me to call my Dr. for a new prescription for the Scan approved glucose monitor . BTW you can buy the test meters and test strips off Amazon without a prescription. So without the Scam Advantage plan I could have the One Touch Verio strips that would have been covered under part B Original medicare. However by being a Scam Advantage Plan member I am being denied a prescription by having the Scam Advantage Plan. To me, and in my opinion, it appears Scan must be getting an incentive by limiting diabetics to only two brands of meters and test strips. Express Scripts, which takes care of the prescription part of Scans Advantage Plan informed me the strips are covered under Medicare Part B. Express Scripts informed me I did not need Scan to use their prescription Drug service. Express scripts can be used with original Medicare without needing a Scan Advantage Plan. I find it interesting that at the end of the day, Medicare pays Scan Advantage yet Scan denies prescriptions that Medicare would otherwise approve. Where is the $$$ Medicare is paying going? Since we are in an open enrollment period its time to look at the multitude of other Advantage plan alternatives. I would urge anyone thinking of joining Scan to shop around first. Hey Scan, we are not taking prescription medications or using devices deemed medically Necessary for the fun of it. I will be talking to Medicare as well. read more

I had a spinal cord injury on Christmas Day 2018. After going to the hospital I was transfered to a specialist and the hospital tried to contact SCAN to get approval. Well, apparently they all went on vacation because they literally couldn't get anyone on the phone until after New Years. Who knows how much damage that week long wait caused?! Then, after the surgery, the hospital wanted to transfer me to a spinal rehabilitation clinic for in person therapy to try to regain my ability to walk. SCAN refused. My case worker at the hospital argued with them over the phone for several days about it. SCAN still refused. In the end they sent me to a nursing home for elderly people for a few weeks (I was in my late 30s when this happened, I have SCAN because I'm disabled.), where the only therapy I got was a guy who came around every other day for an hour and the only equipment they had was those little foot peddlers and elastic bands. Also, they refused to authorize medical transportation to the 'skilled nursing facility' so I had to call an Uber and the hospital poured me into the back seat where I spent the next hour in incredible pain and peed myself all over the place in the poor guy's car. Then SCAN sent me home and that was it. I had to spend the following year teaching myself how to walk again because SCAN is blatantly evil. read more

I was enrolled with the plan for a year in 2022. Tried to switch doctors in June on a three-way conference call in-between; me, the medical group and the health plan. It took an hour back and forth with the health plan and the medical group to find out I could only switch to one doctor that was in-network and his panel was open, according to the health plan's CSR. Below is the acid email I sent to the health plan member services department with no reply - I've never expected anyway. To Whom It May Concern, This is a formal complaint and condemnation about your "business" practice. I have together with One Medical's administration requested to switch providers and to my dismay I was denied based on false premises. On our conference call on 06/03/2022 it was determined after checking a long list of doctors with One Medical that Dr. Brian Secemsky was accepting new patients according to the health insurance information. Today, 06/13/2022, I called to verify the status of my request to find out I was the victim of a classic scam. Moreover, Dr. Brian Secemsky is practicing medicine in San Francisco County but in your convoluted directory it shows him registered in Alameda and San Mateo counties only; therefore, he should not be even included as a provider on Scan Classic (HMO) San Francisco health plan. As I stated to your incompetent CSR, who has no clue what she's brainless repeating over the phone, I will be terminating your mediocre services at the end of the year. Because of the unending delay in treatment required, as verified by three orthopedic doctors, I write this as I await an appeal determination from SCAN. After two of my doctors retired, the third doctor could not do the procedure, beyond his skill level apparently, so SCAN decided I need to see ANOTHER surgeon, in Lomalinda,, 75 miles away, with the first of what undoubtably will turn into six 150 mile round trips. Apparently, SCAN does not have any orthopedic surgeons connected to Eisenhower hospital, 15 miles away. This has been going on for one year now, and I can no longer walk, let alone drive to Lomalinda. What is the purpose of having an insurance company that has no clue about rectifying a well documented injury, known required surgery, and their answer is, `well, SCAN offfers transportation" What a SCAM!!!! read more

I have basically been happy with Scan. I have many of my yearly and new appointments coming up and no access to a dependable car. I called yesterday to find out my transportation benefits and it sounded perfect. I arranged for transport for a test today and had it all confirmed with the providers office and transport company. I scheduled the arrival for 30 minutes before needed just to have extra time in case the driver was late. I received FOUR texts giving info, location of driver map, driver info, where to wait, etc. I waited outside, watching for him. I live in the desert in a gated community and when arranging for the pickup gave the gate code. My apartment faces the gate. One text stated driver was there. He was not. I called the number provided for the driver and received a recorded message stating ride has been canceled. This must happen often to have a prepared recorded message. I called the transport company and she was polite but rather than attempting to get the driver she kept asking questions and talking. She said it would take at least an hour to get another ride arranged and I should call the medical provider and see if they could see me that late. Incredible. Now for this particular appointment I can't get another for over a month. I can't chance using them again. I live in the desert and it is over 100 degrees and with covid restrictions some office don't allow you to wait in the office. I can't chance waiting outside in possible 115 degree heat and a driver not showing up and transport company Scan uses not bothering to resolve this. My suggestion would be, although I am happy so far with Scan, their transportation benefit is not only worthless but dangerous. I would caution not to use it and warn others. read more

The service from SCAN and HealthCosmos was so bad that my husband, who was very sick, wrote to the CEO about the lack of good doctors in the plan, delays in providing authorizations, and being given out of date information. My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea and he waited many months to get an appointment with a suitable pulmonologist. He was prescribed a CPAP machine which he never received. He also had kidney disease and a tumor on his liver and endured a long wait to get authorizations and appointments to see doctors. During that time, he was hospitalized and he passed away in July, 2022. When I am feeling better after losing my husband and best friend, I will submit a detailed report to Medicare as I feel that they should not include SCAN as a Medicare Insurance option. This spring we enrolled my mother Susan in SCAN's EMBRACE plan that is designed for patients in a care facility-- and the care she received from NP Henry was exemplary and prompt. Henry takes great pride in the care given to his patients and is in close contact with the staff at the facilities he covers, and keeps the family closely informed. Anything she needed came to her at the facility-- we never needed to worry how to get her to one place or another. When the time came for her to go on hospice he was kind and compassionate and careful to make sure we understood all the options for her care, and supportive about our choice for her comfort. We were way beyond completely satisfied-- we were blessed to have this special health plan available to us and doubly blessed to have Henry's care. read more

Greetings, I have Scan medicare. Sometime in October 2023 scan moved Lakewood, Los Alamitos and Brookeshire IPA under one umbrellas the.Premier Health Care (PHS). Since Octoboer of last year my husband who is under my insurance had to get treatment, Scan after giving four to five diffent facilties authorizations could not find a provider to help my husband's condition and my doctors says Scan has the authority to get you an out of network provider if none available under your plan. However with continously informing Scan that my husband is very ill they sent cops at my place stating elderly abuse not taking care of my sick husband. I did know taking care and requesting medical services which we were clearly covered for was a form of elderly abuse. He is 80% hard of hearing. They even sent a social worker team at my house. Both the cops and the social workers after questioning and cross examining me & my husband found no such abuse and were as much as told us how could a insurance provider give this type of wrong information. I showed him my call log and and several authorizations sent and Scan could not find a provider and they were covering there backs for in case my husband passes away. I believe those reports did not serve thier purpose. This is what i called HARASSMENT TO SENIORS and abuse of their position These service is covered by Scan medicare. These are the only IPA Offered by my office. The customer service when you call them they say change IPA and your primary care doctors we have had since past 20+ years. As for me for my shoes as i fell down at work and after surgery done by workmen Comp have 10% permanent injury and need to have special shoes two different sizes as i also now suffer from diabetes. I was authorized to go to Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics West at Lakewood, CA . I gave my fit to this office sometime first week of November 2023 till date no shoes. Call that office nobody ever picks up the phone or calls back. However to contact them you have to call the orange couty office number explain to them about Lakewood office not answering calls after several tries and she will connect you. Spoke to the othopedic doctor and he said he has received several complaints about Hanger but cannot help as our insurance gives only those options and he also remarked/added in exasperation that after their unstasfactory client satisfaction/performance they have purchased several other orthopedic facilities which use to give same service. Hanger Orthotics mentioned above is a NO service. I would say a cruel joke on the unsuspecting people of our country. When we call Scan to report the matter the only answer you get is change the IPA if you are not happy. There survey is a scam. They really do not want to know your issue. If you are happy with them the survey they talk about shows up but after talking with customer service they feel you are not happy NO Survey will show up. My issues not still resolved from October 2023 till date January 2024. read more

I thought Scan was fantastic until I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I found the best primary doctor not far from my house and was told I would not have a co-payment for my surgery. However, when it came to having radiation treatment I was told I would have to have daily treatments 5 days a week. I called Scan to see if there was any co-pay. They said my co-pay would be $50 a treatment. This would cost approximately $1,000 per month. There is no way I could afford it. Scan offered no help or support for my situation. I'm sure I'm not the only Scan member that has experienced this situation. This is an option of NOT paying rent or NOT paying for my treatment. read more

I'm not sure how SCAN ever got a rating of 4 1/2 Stars. I would not give them one. In a year I have tried to get a PCP that actually cares but no avail. They all are too lazy to do anything to help unless you raise a stink. I have complained at least 11 times and they seem to care on the phone but really don't do anything. The Doctors at Memorial Care are horrendous and all they do is refer patients to other doctors that are no taking new patients. Do not believe that they are as good as they claim. They have no idea of good Doctor's that actually have availability, they just dump a referral and you have to try to get an appointment. I have had Scan for 7 years now. Absolutely no complaints. I have had very expensive cancer treatment. The doctors are wonderful. My out of pocket has only been a few hundred dollars. They have paid out close to a million dollars. For a little extra I have dental. My vision care is covered, as well as prescriptions and other extras I haven't used yet. read more

I movef my medicare provider from Kaiser to SCAM... I went for a drug test in a lab that was disorganizef and grimey. The girl drew blood without using gloves I went for the urine test and found the cup had been opened. I washed my hands and peed in the open cup. I washed my hands and opened the door using a paper towel. The whole lab looked like a converted janitors closet. Im not sure how I made the fecision to join this third world medical association but after I got home I decided Id seen enough and rejoined Kaiser... AS SOME HAVE SAID IT SHOULD BE CALLED sCAM STAY AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN FROM THIS MEDIC Im very reluctant to name names... But the facility is the one on Riverside Ave near the 210 freeway... When you go in you may need to wait in line behind several other contracted services. Unlike Kaiser that takes Kaiser people only ( unless you go in thru the ER) there are people there who have a myriad of illnesses. My broinlaws brother was in there recently and said that the place had smelled of paint and he had been given a sealed cup and the blood draw was done with modern equipment... Been with Scan for more than fifteen years and never had a problem. The Doctors have alway been there for me. When I had a stroke five years ago, I was immediately hospitalized where I spent the next five days before being transferred to a rehab facility where're I was treated with compassion and professionalism. I would like someone from Scan to contact me and tell me why there are so many poor reviews at yelp about Scan insurance. Now there is Prime Scan that is being pushed by the people that help us get alternative to just Medicare. When I called Scan and posed the same question, I was told that there is not insurance company that doesn't have bed reviews. This is not a satisfactory answer as I have Aetna PPO through Medicare and I have not seen any bad reviews on it. The only reason I am considering to change to Prime Scan is that the premium is much lower and my RX is much cheaper. But, who knows? This may be true that it is just a Scam Health Plan. I do not know. Again there are no reviews on the Prime but the regular Scan certainly have too many bad reviews. Can some one from Scan contact me and talk to me about my concerns? Thanks read more

I live with my elderly father and we have had issues for more than 6 months now with SCAN denying treatments that should be covered by normal Medicare. However, SCAN has done nothing but limit his access to care, how often he sees doctors, or blocks his ability to get treatment. And good luck getting a live human on the phone. I am a 68 year old male, and part of the SCAN Healthplan. I am also a diabetic. I used to have many seizures from low blood sugar. I have probably had as many as 300 seizures in my lifetime because of low blood sugar, so you can imagine the life saving value of the Dexcom Sensor, which will alarm me if my blood sugar is low. I have been without this sensor for a few days now, because of the inability of SCAN to fill this prescription. I have called their customer service number for the past 10 days now, spending sometimes over an hour each day trying to get my prescription to my pharmacy, One receptionist told me Dexcom was no longer in their "Formulary", meaning that it was no longer covered by SCAN. That was such an outrageous statement, that I asked to speak to her supervisor. I was told by her superior that my endocrinologist needed to send a prior authorization to SCAN. I called my endocrinologist and was told that she had already done that, but will send another one. I called back SCAN and was told they could not find the authorization. I asked SCAN if they could contact the endocrinologist, who is on SCAN's list of preferred physicians, and SCAN told me they could not do that. ???? SCAN finally found the prior authorization, but now it had to go to the physicians medical group to be Okayed. SCAN told me this could take time, but it had to be done, by law, by July 4th. That will make it almost a month long since I first started to attempt to get this prescription filled. Are you kidding me? It is amazing how incompetent and how people that answer the customer service are allowed to say anything, without any consequences. I do not know of any reason why SCAN has put so many impediments into the process of simply filling a very necessary prescription, and cannot come up with any other reason other than to slow down the process. I would definitely change to another insurance, but this has happened as well at other insurance companies that I've had to deal with. This way of handling customers is now standard process for insurance companies. And they have the audacity to tell old people to join a health club, while at the same time adding so much stress in older people's lives.
