Nice looking store that is well laid out and organized. Overall really clean too! While we were there the staff didn't say anything to us, and since we didn't purchase anything we didn't have any interactions with them. Women's clothing primarily including shirts, jeans and dresses of all varieties. Intermingled with the clothing items are cards, figurine/nick knack type items some art work, some hats, quite a bit of bright colorful jewelry, sweaters, jackets, and some creams/lotions. Some of the items in store were marked down, and the stuff located nearest to the back entrance was all marked down (clothes). Primarily the reason for three stars, nothing caught the interest of my wife. It may very well have some items that you would like however, so I'd recommend if you're in the area and wanting to check out a boutique to pop in and see what they have. read more

Fabulous selection. Eclectic and one-of-a-kind! Customer service was so inviting and here I was just walking through on my way to the coffee shop next door LOL So yup... I started holiday shopping a bit early as I stayed at the Holiday Inn hotel next door to this place and was on my way to have some tea or coffee on a winters day. Walked out with banging silver earrings and ring (mexican crafted - the good heavy silver) and also a cute heavy sweater for my Tiny bit Christmas gift. Jewelry, blankets, dresses, bags, purses everything speaks crafted with care. The 3 lovely shop owners that I encountered were so delightful and absolutely NO HELP WHAT-SO-EVER for convincing me to tread softly hahaha I ended up staying longer and speaking with them about shipping items if I needed them in the future. I had vowed not to purchase jewelry here again, I had been spoiled by Oaxaca jewelry, yet this place has changed my mind I eagerly anticipate buying from them come Little Bit's Birthday and Mother's Day. It's a wonderland of fun for women local or visiting to check out. Most (if not all) of their products are hand made and imported. This is a great little shop to check out, being central to Vanderbilt University, hotels, coffee shops, and dining options. Alas, the store is now owned by someone else, and they no longer have the same goals or plan about artisan buys. They were kicked out by the landlord who took their business. Scarlett Begonia was a wonderful store, but the fact that it was family owned and supported artisans was important. Now, it's just the landlord owning the whole thing, and from recent reviews, it sounds like it's not well managed. I guess money can't buy you everything. It can't buy family-owned. It can't buy reliable relationships and good service. It can't buy the vision of what the store was and the people I loved to see and buy from. I won't be going here anymore. This is a favorite of my friends in Nashville from the teen daughter to the professional father. And I can see why. Clothing, art, jewelry, toys, musical instruments! Wow I wish this store was in NOLA. From the street it doesn't look that large, but it just keeps going and going. There is a small parking lot behind the shop with maybe a 2 or 3 spots. And the shop has both a back parking lot door and a front door on the street. The staff was great, even getting a giant ladder so I could have just the flying cat that I wanted. I found several great Christmas gifts here and I only wish I had the $ to actually buy myself a bunch of clothes. Next time! read more

The high star-rating for this store feels disingenuous since it was built by the founders, who after more than 35 years were unceremoniously booted out by the landlord and current owner. My understanding is that he is not committed to the longstanding tradition of support and commitment to the South American artists whose work we came to love. Nashville icons treated poorly. This store has a TON of stuff. It's huge. Whenever I visit a town I look to see if they have a fair trade store, and so I stopped here on my trip to Nashville. They have tons of clothing, jewelry, art, etc. I hate when people describe something as "granola" or "crunchy" or something, but maybe that's because I don't think of being called a hippie a pejorative... anyway, the average person would probably look at this store and think those things. The staff didn't really say hello or anything when I came in, but I wasn't too put out by that. I got to look around and saw a few things that were interesting, but nothing I had to have. That having been said, this store out of all the ones I visited reminded me most of my favorite store in my Oregon hometown, so it's probably a good thing it's in Nashville and not Chicago. I didn't purchase anything on this visit but it would probably be a store I'd visit frequently if I lived nearby. Parking is street, as far as I could tell, but I had no problem finding a spot in front of the shop. read more

4.5 The fact that I'm writing a review of Scarlett Begonia goes to show that there's so much more to find on Yelp than food. You all know the score: December. Holidays. Gifts. Gotta be better than last year. I always make a concerted effort to shop, buy and support local so when it came to looking for places to patronize in the last month of the year, I turned to Yelp. Yelp led me to Scarlett Begonia. Yelp made me look like a rock star. I had no idea this shop had been around for so long. In a city where new New NEW gets so much attention, I think it's important to remember what made this city this city. With almost four decades under its belt, Scarlett Begonia was all about global responsibility and sustainability when most internet SJWs were twinkles in their parents' eye. This is how you change the world: you do something. You don't just talk about it. SB's mission is 'to provide an outlet for struggling artisans from around the world and expose native cultures through their folk art and clothing with fair trade as a basis for all their business dealings.' They do this by selling incredible pieces for fair (and, affordable) prices. I was a bit ashamed that I hadn't ventured in before but this won't be my last trip. Looks are deceiving. From the street, I thought I was walking in to a closet. Once I entered, my jaw dropped. This place is a LOT larger than it seems. Perhaps SB has harnessed the power of the tesseract (from A Wrinkle In Time)? The vibe in the store is overwhelmingly positive. I interacted with the owner, his daughter and their staff and everyone was a pure delight. It's obvious they believe in what they do and are happy to do it. For someone like me, who does not enjoy shopping, they made the act pleasurable. Their beautiful products didn't hurt. I came in not knowing what I wanted to buy. After walking around, touching the clothes and listening to the music, I happened upon their jewelry. It's gorgeous. Each piece was inventive, striking and totally unique. Rather than shy me away from the pieces, I was encouraged to ask about them, handle them and see what I enjoyed most. I settled on a striking green necklace that was unlike any I'd ever seen before. It was a gorgeous piece that turned into a slam dunk on Christmas morning. I felt proud to have bought such a gift and I was happy to support a store (and, in turn, an artisan) and contribute to sustainability and globalism. Conscious consumerism works. Think global, act local is alive and well at Scarlett Begonia. When looking for your next one-of-a-kind present, I highly encourage you to find it here. Like Blair L., I've been wondering about this place for quite some time (more like 4 or 5 years) but never ventured in until yesterday. I was intrigued by the "South American Imports" part of the sign, but came to find out from the owner (VERY sweet lady I'll add) that about 20 years ago, she only sold products from South America because she and her husband traveled there frequently. Now, however, she has caught up with demand (probably from the Vandy girls) and sells clothes and accessories from all over. I did try on a really cute knit halter dress, perfect for a beach cover up or just kicking around in the summer, but it was $50 and as I'm trying to save some money these days, figured I could buy something similar at Old Navy or Target. Some cute dresses and knit shirts though. There is also quite a selection of wraps, scarves, and various products from Mexico, South America, Indonesia, and other countries I'm sure. Again, the owner was very friendly and explained the layout of the store, and the sales girls were eager to help without being too pushy. I'll definitely be back! read more

This store is so awesome and has been in Nashville for 36 years! I've been shopping here for around 10 of those and then the last 6 years I've been going regularly. Whenever I need to buy a gift for a friend or acquaintance I go to Pangaea and I go here. I also take pictures of things I want from SB and email them to my spouse, this way I'm guaranteed to get at least 3 gifts from here a year (Valentine's, birthday, and mother's day). I have purses, jewelry, shirts, dresses, finger puppets, and more from here! I bought my toddler niece a gorgeous dress made in Guatemala. There are things your well behaved child can amuse themselves with while you shop, too. Don't forget to look up! They've got great artwork above the front entrance and I found a fantastic Venice Beach vibe mirror ($25!) in the dressing room once. read more

The last time I checked, I wasn't a middle aged woman, so I think the reviews suggesting that those of us with functioning ovaries need not visit Scarlett Begonia are a tad harsh. Yes, the vibe is very hippy-granola-love-mother earth, but that doesn't negate the fact that there are some really cute items of clothing to be found in this store even for us urban city dwellers. While I could totally see packing up my suitcase with a variety of the organic cotton and recycled silk dresses they sell here should the urge to hightail it to some tropical paradise ever strike, I've also been lucky enough to find two really cute (but comfy) cocktail/work appropriate dresses here. When warm weather hits Nashville I pretty much live in skirts and dresses for months on end, so cute additions to my wardrobe are always welcome. If you're into outfitting yourself in items that are one (or three) of a kind, I definitely recommend checking out this place. Some things are overly bohemian for my taste (and figure), but the merchandise is updated frequently (I've been back twice in the span of three weeks and found different things on each trip). Prices are pretty reasonable, although items near the front of the store are obviously new arrivals and tend to be for those with slightly bigger budgets. But the sale racks are where really great bargains can be found (tops for less than $20, dresses around $30) and where you'll find me trawling. read more

I went in there the first time today and I was instantly impressed. They have great imports including carved gourds from Peru, jewelry from Ecuador, and decorative wall art. The women's clothing is section is full of cute dresses. Most of them are short, but they also carry maxi-dresses. All of the selections are very colorful, bright, and youthful. Items start around $18 and max out around $80. The men's clothing section is minimal. The store is geared more toward women, but your man could probably find much to look at in the store while you shop. The shop owners are very friendly and welcoming. My favorite work skirt of all time was purchased 4 years ago at Scarlett Begonia. It's a flowy white cotton masterpiece that is of really high quality and insanely comfortable. The prices can sometimes be a little high (I think I paid $60+ for the skirt) for my budget, but they have some hidden gems. I also have a very sexy black dress and gorgeous freshwater pearl necklace from the store. I would agree with other yelpers that a lot of the clothes are catered to middle-age women, but I'm 23 and I always find a cute dress or skirt on the racks. They have very pretty jewelry, lots of hippy linen skirts and dresses, some nice stuff for the younger crowd, and lots of "giftable" South American imports. The staff are very friendly and the store is fun browsing so check it out! read more

Awesome import shop run by ex-hippies (check out the photo of them young by the register -- 70s-tastic) carrying all sorts of cool import clothes, including sarongs, sundresses, belts, purses, blouses, hats, scarves, and jewelry. Great place for colorful gifts and accessories -- I've bought a strappy yellow sundress here, a black-and-white flowered sarong, a bohemian yellow silk purse, a cute change purse -- all reasonably-priced and cute. Oh sweet middle-aged mom haven. Ok so I'm not a middle aged mom so I feel I can't judge this place but I can tell you that I have never walked out of Scarlett Begonia with anything. However, I will say that it does have a great array unique South American apparel and accessories. From skirts, to shirts, to jewelry, to bags, to hats, and more. Everything seems to be fairly priced, and I have to say that they owner was just adorable and super friendly. I always make time to stop by this shop and have been doing so for many years and have made many, many purchases there. Unfortunately, my daughter and I were made to feel very uncomfortable when the woman working there stood looking over us like she thought we were going to steal something. This store has so much to offer, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't have seen it all. There is stuff everywhere! I couldn't believe all the different styles of clothing in one store, interesting jewelry, and beautiful wall hangings, mirrors and other interesting bits. I went in to do Christmas shopping this season and it was a great experience. I found great (and cheap!) presents and they gift wrapped everything for free! The sales people were very helpful and eager to help me find gifts too. Another thing I love about Scarlett Begonia, which others have touched on, are the owners. They are so friendly, and always there I think! They told me all about how they got started in the 80s, how they have started sharing merchandise with their sister store, and made me feel so comfortable there. Sometimes the prices can be a little high on the clothes, but they seem to have sales quite frequently. The rest of the goods are really reasonably priced though. read more
