This time I visited Grapevine for hair trim and hair color. I got sun-kissed/partial highlights on the crown section only, in the color honey/caramel/walnut. Katie had colored my hair before so she just matched the top portion of my hair to the bottom. So basically she had to color only a quarter portion of the total length of my hair. Katie is an expert and I'm very satisfied with her services. Grapevine has increased their rates, so, hair trimming is now $60 and highlights is $90. They didn't increased their rates for s long time until now. I guess they deserve it for all the effort and care they put in to make you look pretty. I don't know about others, but I prefer to give them between 20-25% tips. read more

You never want to leave a hair salon looking worse than you did when you walked in...but that is what happened to me when I went to Grapevine. I called the salon and requested an appointment--noting on the call that I was a new client and that I had long, curly hair. I was the first appointment of the following day and things got off to a pleasant start. During the consultation I explained that I didn't want too much length cut off and my stylist respected that throughout my haircut. Unfortunately, once it was time to blow my hair dry it was clear that he was rushing and distracted by the arrival of the next client. My stylist hurriedly blew my hair out until it was (mostly) dry--leaving it incredibly rough and unpolished. Then he mentioned "The next time you make an appointment mention how much hair you have so that I can reserve more time." Initially, I thought this was a fair request but I DID mention that I was both a new client and that I had long, curly hair when I called for my appointment. From there, I was rushed out the door feeling grateful that my hair was not cut shorter than I wanted it to be but really disappointed in the style. I don't have anything against anyone in the salon but I felt obligated to share my experience so that others don't get their hopes up as high as I did about going there. One, it's not the customer's responsibility to ensure enough time is reserved--it's the receptionist's job to collect the necessary information and schedule accordingly. Two, even without the time issue I'm not sure I would have been happy with my blow out because the stylist's approach was totally crude. This is a 2-star salon benefiting from being located in a 3-star part of town and having 4/5-star loyalty from just the right number of reviewers to rise to the top of a Yelp search. I really, really hate writing less than stellar reviews but I appreciate others sharing their experiences to save me from bad ones..so, there you have it. read more

I really wanted to like this place. They were super accommodating in helping me get an appointment quickly. I got Katie doing a cut for me. I thought that she did a good job with the consultation, giving me some good suggestions for fun/cute ways to change up my look, but also something that I wouldn't regret. I liked that she gave me face framing layers and blunt bangs, also telling me how to blow-dry them on the fly. However, I didn't think that she took enough off with the length, and went back the next day for her to fix. She gave me a dry cut, that seemed a bit hurried and not all though careful. I thought it was fine (given I can't really see the back of my hair). However, I have another friend who does hair, and when she was looking over my hair, she noticed that the bottom of my hair wasn't cut evenly -- there were a few stray pieces that were noticeably longer than the rest of my hair. Probably from the dry cut. She also said that the layers weren't that well done. They weren't blended in well. I think that my friend is great with hair, and I trust her opinion. Overall, I think that they do a good job with the consultation, and probably a decent job with cuts, but it may not be that refined. Really cool, nice people. It's a small, cute place with three hairstylists. I used them for wedding hair and makeup for a group of 5 and they made everyone look beautiful! Jen and Daniel were awesome with updo's and Katie was great with makeup. It's a small place, so for most of the time we were the only ones there and we were allowed to bring food and drinks. Should have brought mimosas, but my girls were already hungover from the night before and couldn't really take anymore (and I definitely did not want them taking a stumble on the grass aisle!). All my girls were very happy with their looks. I do believe my trial run was better than the actual day, but it might be because Katie and Jen were exhausted from working on 4 girls previous to me, but I was happy nonetheless. Brides go last so that their makeup and hair are the freshest, but the makeup and hair stays set all day and night. So, if I could do it again, I would go first so that I can get the most energy and attention out of the makeup artist and hairstylist. I got to see other people get haircuts during my trial run and at my wedding day, and the cuts were all trendy and fresh...lots of layers, volume. The stylists definitely tailored the cuts to the clients' wants and wishes. I plan on visiting again for a regular haircut. read more

So I went to Grapevine Hair Studio for the first time two years ago when I moved to Baltimore. I had walked by a few times to see some friendly faces, so when it got to the point where I really needed a haircut, I poked my head in and made an appointment. If you are one of the ladies out there with super thick and frizzy hair (you know who you are), then you know finding the right stylist can be difficult, because few know what cuts "work" for thick hair and how to do them right. If you're like me, you've "been around the block" only to end up looking like you're wearing a bike helmet or like a member of the Hairspray cast. And I love John Waters' style, don't get me wrong, but that sort of hair can be dangerous with the summer humidity around the harbor and risk of getting struck by lightning at a Patterson Park concert. Now, you are going to think I am pretentious but I am going to "tell you true" as my Sicilian mother-in-law says: Prior to moving to Baltimore, I got my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon. I wanted the perfect bob, and let's face it, they invented it, so I figured why reinvent the wheel? So I shelled out a ridiculous $100+ per cut. And their cuts were beyond excellent. JUST NOT AS EXCELLENT AS KATIE'S! I have been so impressed not only by Katie's mastery and professionalism as a stylist, but also her ability to create the perfect classic bob. She can certainly do the funkier styles as well - this gal has got it all going on - but she gets to know the personalities of her clients and respects when you want to go the more classic route. She has created by far the best styles I've had in my 33 years, and that is a lot to say, as I've lived all over the United States and boy am I picky. Not only that, but Katie and the rest of the staff are incredibly courteous and make you feel at home, so going there is totally relaxing and fun. I always try to schedule appointments beforehand, but when things pop up, they are always able to fit me in last-minute. And not in a condescending sort of way, but in a spin-around-the-chair, don't worry 'hon, what-are-we-doing-today sort of way. Katie and her husband Daniel are just amazing human beings. Okay, I never write bad reviews about places. I always try to give them a second chance, but this is an exception for me. First of all, Im not from Baltimore, I just moved here, and Ive had platinum blonde hair for YEARS. I read amazing reviews about this place so I made an apt. From the bat, they gave me a hard time. They wanted me to come in for a consultation JUST to schedule the apt, so they could see my hair.I explained I work 85 hrs a week, 30 min away, and I need to schedule an apt b/c I had an event coming up, after 30 minutes on the phone, they allowed me to. First headache over. Then, I get in there, keep in mind I had light brown hair with blonde highlights and was trying to go back to bleach blonde, a feat many hair stylists of done for me in my lifetime in one sitting. They tell me its going to take 3 times, but they'll do their best. First, they strip my hair. Then, they put bleach directly onto my scalp, no foils, nothing. after 5 minutes, Im holding back tears it hurts so bad. The girls next to my stylist noticed the pain Im in, and told him to take the bleach off, he got rude and said "well, shes gonna have orange hair!". I allowed him to leave it and told him I'd rather hurt than walk out looking like a pumpkin. I withstood almost 25 minutes of mind altering pain. I was gripping the bench it hurt so bad, even after they washed it off, the pain didnt subside. he swore it wasnt burning me, but two days later, I had scabs all over my head. And we're talking major scabs from burns. Thank goodness I have a doctor in the family and was able to get burn mediction without a drs apt, or there would have been more money down the drain. By the end of the day, and yes he did spend all day on me, which was his doing not mine( and he keeps saying its my fault b/c I had black hair- he got that from me telling him that 6 months earlier I'd died my hair black- I walked in there after 2 corrective treatments, MY HAIR WAS LIGHT BROWN WITH BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS), he says due to all that, its THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS. I wanted to say a lot to this, like you never even saw me with black hair, and you burned the hell out of me, and this blonde looks like dogshit, but I was in so much pain and so upset that I did the classy thing and simply smiled and pretended I wasnt upset. To relieve the second bit of pain he'd caused me, he gave me two bottles of expensive products. When I got up to the counter to pay, I bent over to go into my wallet, and a bottle suddenly disappeard when I picked my head up. The counter girl had taken my bottle back! I almost said something, but I'd been through enough for one day. I got home and realized I had orange ALL in the underside of my hair. My hair was fried worse than it ever had been in my life. And two months later, ITS STILL FRIED, even after 5 corrective treatments, shampooing once a week, and deep conditioning three times a week. Im italian. I have the most durable, porous hair anyones ever seen. All my friends are stylists. so I know my stuff. I cant speak for every stylist there, but the guy that did my hair really messed mine up. Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he was tired, but theres no excuse in the world to charge someone 300 dollars for a head full of scabs and orange fried hair,. Normally I would go in and give them a chance to fix it, but I wouldnt let this place touch my again. I couldnt even get it fixed b/c it was so destroyed, my regular salon is FINALLY willing to go in and try to fix it after two months. That tells you how bad it was and still is. If you're a blonde: please do NOT allow this place to touch your hair. Every one makes mistakes, but theres no excuse to charge someone 300 dollars when you make one, and not acknowledge that you've burned the hell out of them. I have given Grapevine my business and just thought that eventually they wouldn't make me feel like I was infringing on their time by getting a simple haircut. I've never wanted anything extensive and maybe that's why I was just never worth their time. I made a point to say repeatedly the last time I was in that I wanted just an "in between cuts" trim. They proceeded to charge me full price and did so in an unprofessional and assuming manner. I'm more than willing to pay for a haircut, but we discussed multiple times that I didn't want a haircut, just a trim. I found Grapevine Hair Studio after the very emotional and challenging one-year marking of the passing of my hair stylist and friend of nearly 10 years. Since that loss, I have had my hair done by 4 other stylists (more than once for a few of them) and have left each appointment feeling frustrated. Frustrated not by just the stylists, but by my own inability to describe what i want because for nearly 10 years my hair guy just knew what to do and i was flexible and trusted his judgement. After reading a few reviews I decided to try Danny at Grapevine, i am in Baltimore a lot and the location is convenient to where i stay. When i entered the salon i really liked the vibe and Danny was very welcoming and made me feel very comfortable. He colored my hair and freshened up my hi-lights avoiding the red and brassiness that my naturally dark hair so wants to be. The cut turned out to be a little shorter than what i asked for and i think what even he expected but i really believe it needed the cut as the last person had made some pretty obvious errors with my hair. That being said, i have had many many compliments about my hair since my May 5th appointment and am really happy with it, it is short and i do well with short hair and this razor cut and style gives me some diversity, i have styled it a few different ways and as it grows out a little will be able to change things up even more. He took the time to listen to me when I first arrived and was very considerate about what I wanted, he provided his professional opinion but never lost sight of what I told him was important to me. He did an amazing job with my hair. I have somewhat thick and long hair and he cut it beautifully. He gave me great long angles that really worked well with my face. Upon relocating to Baltimore, I was looking for a new stylist and salon to help me revamp a tired look. I like edgy haircuts with color that is both bold and sophisticated, and many salons I've dealt with in the past, while they've done a good job, haven't gone edgy enough or bold enough for me. That has all changed with Grapevine. My first visit was in June 2013, and I met with Katie beforehand to do a consult about color and cut. She worked with me throughout, and on the day of my cut and color gave me an awesome, edgy cut with a style of bangs I didn't know I wanted (but totally did!) She uses a bright red on my hair that starts out a bold ruby color and fades to a lovely auburn that really pops in the sunshine. She also helped me find some products to keep my hair looking its best for the three to four months of abuse I typically put it through before finding my way back to Grapevine. I had my third cut-and-color at Grapevine last month, and was just as pleased as ever. Each cut is a little different and a little more edgy, and the color is awesome as ever. I couldn't be happier with the services I receive there. The price is, in my opinion, competitive with other salons in the same area, and since I have never found a place that can do such a bright and long-lasting red color on me, I consider it an especially good value. Katie has also offered to do interim bang trims for me, and though I haven't taken her up on that (because I am lazy) I think it's pretty awesome. Also, at my first appointment, she used two colors, a slightly different one on my bangs. When the color on my bangs started fading faster than the rest of the color a week later, she re-dyed my bangs to the same color as the rest of my hair (at my request) and didn't charge me extra. I thought this was especially kind of her since the fading might have only been my imagination. Normally I would go over the negative points of my experience, but I honestly don't have much negative to say about Grapevine. As a logistical note, I would recommend to those who are driving in to leave extra time to find parking in Canton, especially on weekend afternoons. To make a long story short, if you communicate well with your stylist, you're likely to have a very good experience at Grapevine. I have never been disappointed. read more

For about seven years, I have had my frizzy, curly, graying, cow-licky, dark hair cut, colored, keratin straightened, styled, highlighted, lowlighted, blown dry, and otherwise taken care of at Grapevine, almost exclusively by Danny but with occasional expert fill-ins by Katie and Jen. Before Daniel started styling my hair, I had always had trouble finding a stylist who could offer me a stylish cut that also worked with my largely unmanageable hair. But I've never had a bad haircut at Grapevine, always had terrific color services, and I know I can rely on the stylists to do a good job, whether I'm wearing my hair short or long. Danny can work a blow-dryer like a magic wand. My hair is healthier and better-looking now than when I was 20. Because I have been going to Danny for so long, I sometimes go short on direction and just let Danny figure out how to best achieve an overall goal, but he has been open and responsive when I have been more specifically directive (like before a job interview). I enjoy the atmosphere at Grapevine--welcoming, unpretentious, and casual, but fully professional when it comes to hair. While I sometimes buy products there, I don't feel any pressure to do so and have been alerted by the stylists to inexpensive products at the drugstore that can be great for my quirky hair. I generally spend at least an hour and often longer for my appointment, and it's worth the time, despite my schedule being hectic--plus it's relaxing and nice to chat with the people there. read more

went in for a hair and makeup trial for my wedding based on J.C.'s review. my experience was not so great... it seemed like katie was annoyed because i came in late and my hair was a little damp. there was a huge accident a few miles in front of me, as i was coming up and i sat on 95 for about 25 minutes, i called and left a message letting them know. as soon as i got there, i let them know that we did not need to do the makeup trial since i was late, but she said she had time to do it. i showed katie the picture of what i wanted, and she said she could do it. she put my hair up with curls on the sides. the curls DID NOT look anything like the curls in the picture. ofcourse, she blamed my hair, she said it was because i needed a haircut/ layering around my face, i wish she would've told me this BEFORE she said she COULD do it. whatever, i just ended up asking her to put all of my hair up in a mid bun without the curls i liked. this looked fine, it was really simple, and i was happy with it. again, not exactly what i wanted, but at that point we moved onto the makeup. the studio is poorly lit, there is a tiny window next to the area she did my makeup, but it really is not enough light. the whole process seemed a bit rushed, as katie's next client came in during the middle of the application. i did not like the shadow she used so i asked her for something lighter, she seemed annoyed again) she changed it. it was fine, and i didn't feel comfortable asking her questions. she seemed hungry and annoyed. i thought the way she spoke to the receptionist seemed a bit rude, she had her pick up some fast food for the crew. i also asked her to curl my lashes as she did not. i saw myself in the mirror in the car, and i looked like i had a halloween mask on, the foundation did not match my face at all. do not go here for makeup if you are asian. i called to see if she could match me better, but she informed me that she had to tend to her client there, and reminded me that it was my fault that i was late. she also told me that i could bring in my makeup for the day of my wedding. two hours after the trial, i had racoon eyes. it was pretty bad...needless to say I did have anything to do with her following the trial. read more

She did a test run a month or so before the wedding, and offered to make changes, but none were needed. Katie and her husband, Danny, traveled to Delaware to do my and my bridesmaids' hair and makeup on my wedding day, and they did an amazing job--every one of us felt beautiful and they were able to re-create the inspirations we showed them.
