She was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to walk us through the wines. We decided to try some of the reserve wines and were blown away. The winery itself is beautiful, modern, relaxed, and surrounded by great views right next to the estate vineyards. What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into one of the highlights of our trip. Needless to say, we enjoyed ourselves enough to join the wine club and buy a case to bring back home to Temecula. Looking forward to opening those bottles and remembering a great day.

You'd think there would be at least one wine that was good, but we didn't find one that we enjoyed. The atmosphere, however, was amazing! We loved the farm environment with a beautiful lawn and tons of room for kids to run around. Dogs are welcome, too! Our server, Stephanie, was also very nice and knowledgeable about the wines. Top picks when I visited: 2015 Sangiovese 2015 Marsanne Up and coming on the list are a White Grenache, Tempernillo, Cab Franc, Barbera... Holy smokes! I cannot wait for those! Although when you drive to the tasting room you may have the feeling of "Where the heck is this place?" or "Are we ever going to get there?" Be patient. You will, and it is well worth the drive. When your name carries the legacy of Hearst, those standards should be even higher. The setting at Hearst Ranch Winery in San Simeon is undeniably beautiful. The oceanfront views are spectacular and make it a destination worth visiting. Unfortunately, the hospitality did not match the stunning location. This was our first visit, and sadly, it will more than likely be our last. Throughout our visit, it was evident that some guests received warm, attentive hospitality while others, including us, received only the minimum level of service. Hospitality should never feel selective. We ordered a charcuterie board, and after waiting approximately 30 minutes, I finally asked our server about it. Only then were we informed that we were expected to walk across to the General Store, pick up the board ourselves, and bring it back to the winery. We were also told that the winery kitchen is closed on Mondays and that the host had apparently been confused when taking our order. Had this been communicated at the time of ordering, the misunderstanding and the lengthy wait could have been avoided entirely. The apology we received felt disingenuous and lacked the ownership that transforms a service failure into a positive recovery. Mistakes happen in every hospitality business. What guests remember most is how those mistakes are handled. Hearst Ranch Winery has an extraordinary location and a name synonymous with excellence. I sincerely hope leadership reinforces that every guest deserves the same level of warmth, professionalism, and hospitality from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave. The legendary DeRose Winery…read more.. It's all about the Cab Franc! I believe the Cab Franc is what they are known for... and for good reason. The Cab Franc is one of the best I had! The only other local domestic rival I know off that is near as good hails from 3 Steves Winery in Livermore, and they get the grapes form DeRose! So, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of the Cab Franc. You won't regret it. The Cab Franc is a 100% Cabernet Franc, not blended. The Vines are pruned in the winter, the Grapes are exposed to sunlight with careful leaf removal and the Clusters are thinned after veraison. Common tasting notes are Berries , dark Stone Fruit, a dash of pepper a subtle hint of roses. Can you tell I like is wine? The vineyard is located on both sides of the San Andreas Fault and wines are part of the old Vaché planting method. DeRose wines are also organically farmed, just not not certified. Oh, can't forget the dry farming as well. The Winery is in the middle of nowhere... It's a journey onto itself to get here. There isn't much else around. There is another winery down the road, but that's about it. Don't be scared to make the trip. They recently opened a Tasting room in San Martin. The Pinot flight comes with a Chardonnay to start followed by four Pinot Noirs. We were also able to dry their dessert wine, the viognier doux. Definitely order their charcuterie board! For only $20 it's a huge plate with lots of variety of goodies to munch on during your tasting. The staff were lovely and I enjoyed all the info they told us about Calera.
