When we visited Caparone Winery in Paso Robles, we made the mistake of driving down a dirt path road on the way. It wasn't terrible but do try to take San Marcos Road when coming here. When we came to the winery, it literally looked like a deserted farmhouse. There was just 1 other vehicle around and a closed door to the building. We ventured inside and was pleasantly surprised that the father/owner Dave was already there pouring wine for visitors! The building was filled with wooden barrels of unsulfated wine. On a modest table, Dave offered 2015 Nebbiolo, 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Merlot, 2016 Aglianico, 2013 Zinfandel, and 2016 Sangiovese. We sampled each wine and particularly liked the Zinfandel! The wine smelled fragrant and full. The wine was slightly dry and not at all acidic and we loved the lack of sulfated preservatives. At $18 per bottle, 10% discounts are offered for a half case 6 bottles and 20% discount for a full case of 12 bottles. We purchased the Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Nebbiolo. Excellent wine and without sulfite preservatives! A great little winery worth visiting!

The tour started at 10am cause it would be too hot to be outside in the afternoon. Our tour guy was very professional and knowledgeable about this massive vineyard resort. The tour took about an hour and half and finished with wine tasting in the resort tasting room. We were introduced to the entire property, history and facts about this winery. I really liked the cute goats on the ground. I was worried about them being in the heat and out in the sun. But our tour guy assured me that they made sure the animals stay in shaded areas and drink enough water to stay hydrated. The arts of this place are just fantastic. Owner is a big art collector so he covers quite a few cultures including Buddha (my faith)! All the arts are from the original countries so they are authentic. I loved the amazing art installations throughout the vineyard. My sign Virgo was on the top of the hill so we had to do a mill hike to see it. There is an art tour that we will do next time. I really want to know the details and histories of all the arts here. I was so glad that we decided to do this tour. If you ever visit Paso Robles wine country you might want to check this winery out. The prices were reasonable at $45 per person, $30 for resort guests and complimentary for members (2 people). The hours are Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays at 10am. Reservations are required. Ps. I'd suggest not visit in summer, central coast summer temperatures are unbearable!

For $45, I would expect a decent taste, not a sip. My wife and I decided not to buy wine this time, nothing really stood out. I did decide to buy a jar of olives; the olives had a slight hint of almonds, not a fan. I attempted to close the jar and the lid would not lock in place (unable to get a tight seal). I returned the jar and asked that the hostess notify the own of this issue. The server was great, friendly, and professional. My experience, during a $45 tasting, one should have consumed the equivalent of at least 3/4 of a bottle (I could be wrong). During this tasting, we consumed the equivalent of a half glass of wine.

As we clinked our glasses filled with 2017 Vista Del Rey's Zin-Bera with to cheers, I realized that I had not yet given Vista Del Rey Vineyards the review and credit it deserves. So as they say, 'there's no time like the present." If you want to experience the TRUE Paso Robles wine country--and, as a matter of fact the varietal Zinfandel--from BEFORE it became the next Napa or Sonoma, Vista Del Rey Vineyards (VDRV) is a must-visit! Prior to a weekend wine tasting trip, I had simply Googled where to find the best Zinfandels in Paso. I quickly discovered VDRV while skimming an article that identified all the top Zinfandels in the region. In fact, VDRV's Zin had rated within the top 3 on the list! Not to mention, they were one of the first, original 20 vineyards planted in Paso Robles and they celebrated their 25th year anniversary in 2020. Wowzers! I reached out to the owner and winemaker, Dave and his wife Carol, via their Facebook page; though you can also call them to book. They are not open to the public without a reservation since their winery is on their home's premises. [Also, keep in mind any county wide Covid restrictions]. In order to get to VDRV, you have to drive along some rural, dirt roads to reach a hillside destination up above the town of San Miguel on the eastern slope of the Santa Lucia Mountains. After all, you are driving to reach your destination of  "Vista Del Rey," translated from Spanish as "King's View." Once we arrived, we were greeted not only by a gorgeous 360-degree view, but the lovely couple, Dave and Carol. Oh, and can't forget their friendly dog and cat! Dave opened and introduced us to several bottles of wine including: a 2016 and 2017 Zinfandel, 2018 Barbera Lot 1 & 2, N/V Zin-Bera, 2019 dry Zin Rosé, and 2018 Barbera Dessert Wine. To be honest, all of them were simply spectacular, bold, and exactly what we seek out. I will say that the Zin-Bera was our favorite and such a perfect blend. Although Dave used to produce his own grapes on his vineyard, he eventually refused to continue to water his grapes due to the endless droughts that have impacted the area for decades. Now he sources his grapes from other sustainable, low-irrigation vineyards nearby. Like most small, family-owned businesses, VDRV has been having tough times with their wine club and pandemic relief orders carrying them through. What we loved most (besides the the wine obviously) is that VDRV was unpretentious. Dave and Carol introduced their wines (accepting all input and any criticism), their process, and welcomed conversation and questions. As fellow wine industry folks, it was super low-key and neat that Dave was willing to trade wine evenly as farmers use to do in the 'good olde days.' We continue to support VDRV to this day and it has become one of our favorite and most recommended stops in Paso Robles wine country. With this, I will end on: SUPPORT SMALL & LOCAL (Dave still hand signs each bottle himself!)--especially during this pandemic!

Vista Del Rey Lot"53" Zinfandel…read more I am not a huge fan of Zinfandel and when I do drink it I prefer wines on a much spicier level then the typical Fruit Bombs I get from California. This little winery in Paso Robles produces a few Zinfandels. Also Barbera and Sangiovese. The other Zin that Vista Del Rey produces I recall not liking much as it leaned toward that fruity style. The Lot"53" is a very well rounded Zin with Cranberry, Cinnamon and black pepper on the nose. BBQ ribs would be a must for this wine. I tasted this wine at one of my local hangouts in Whittier. The wine can be found for between $24.00 to $28.00 per bottle at some local wine shops. Cheers

I hadn't visited since the week before everything shut down for COVID, and I'm happy to say it's just as great as I remembered. The vibe is cozy and understated, which is a big part of the charm. It doesn't feel overly commercialized or like they're rushing people in and out; there's a real sense of care behind the experience. The wines are excellent, and the pricing feels very fair, especially since nothing about the experience feels over the top or pretentious. We came on a last-minute trip and weren't able to get a reservation online, but they were kind enough to accommodate us as walk-ins. We spent about an hour there, enjoyed the tasting, and ended up buying a few bottles. We'll definitely be back soon, and I'd love to join the wine club once we start drinking more wine. Highly recommend, just really good quality all around.

I liked all five wines on the tasting menu, including the rosé, which is new for me because I don't usually love rosés. I ended up getting another glass of the Barbera after we finished the tasting. Beautiful view from their deck. We caught the tail end of their cave tour, which always fun. Overall a really lovely wine experience.

Let me preface this with this - I rarely write reviews, and never have had to write a bad one…read moresadly. I believe sometimes companies have off days, and employees may have a bad day, which can affect one's experience, thus I dont let one bad experience ruin a company's review. But when it comes to my CHILD, you best believe i will never forgive and forget or let our experience be forgotten. We visited this winery expecting a relaxing, family-friendly experience and instead left with our daughter crying after being scratched in the face near her eye by the owner's off-leash dog. What makes this especially frustrating is that the winery's own rules state dogs must be leashed, yet the owners' dogs were roaming the property freely. Our daughter was calmly petting one of the dogs with me standing directly beside her when the dog suddenly growled and scratched her across the face. This was completely unprovoked and witnessed by the owner himself, who said absolutely nothing afterward. No apology, no concern, no accountability. An employee later approached us and said, "Sorry, he's old and maybe didn't like that she was the same height as him, which made him react".....which felt less like accountability and more like an absurd attempt to excuse why a reactive dog was allowed to roam off leash around guests and children. We also observed the dogs behaving territorially toward other leashed dogs on the property, making it even more inappropriate that they were allowed off leash in a public setting. My father-in-law is a VERY well known, well respected, and prominent winemaker in Virginia and across the United States, if you know anything about wine, you know him. So lets say, we understand winery culture and hospitality, fairly well. Had something like this happened on his property, it would have been handled immediately and professionally with genuine concern for the injured guest.....especially a child. Watching the owner casually continue on in his conversation with whomever, and pet the dog like nothing happened while our daughter screamed and cried was honestly unbelievable. In my opinion, not worth the visit for the subpar wine, if you want to take your children/dog somewhere. The poodles were friendly to me, and other adults, until we saw their behavior to other dogs & then my child....The complete lack of concern from ownership after a child was injured was shocking. Frankly, they are fortunate we chose not to escalate the situation further. Parents should absolutely be cautious visiting here with children or pets. An off-leash dog with territorial behavior has no place interacting freely with guests. Absolutely shocked and the owner should be ashamed of his actions & response (or lack there of) to the situation.

When we arrived, we were greeted with the first wine on the tasting list, which was the Grenache (pretty good, different than what I normally go for). The patio had a nice view of the rolling hills and we could see goats running across them in the distance. The tasting consisted of 4 wines, and we also got a bonus pour. Our host was friendly and knowledgeable, and I really enjoyed the wine selection, especially the "Messer" red. We also ordered lunch, and both my Harvest Salad and Parmesan Fries were very tasty. The grounds were nice, but not quite as breathtaking as some of the other vineyards I've seen in the area. Overall though, a good experience!

Admittedly, the Wine is well-made and pours are more than plentiful for $50, but sitting in the sun at 90F+ loses its charm quickly. Arriving early for out reservation we were asked to wait out front, our first of five tastes handed to us while we walked around. After this we were seated, and pointedly ignored for over 15 minutes by two female servers. No water, not even a nod or smile. It turns out "our server" called out, so a younger male eventually stepped up and took over, but still no water for another 15 minutes. All five tastes were notably poured in the same un-rinsed glass, contaminating flavors and clouding nuance.
