It was a Serendipitous visit- as we were driving by Batesville the Sunday before Presidents' Day. Thought we'd just stop and see what it looked like. Forgetting all about their famous cherry Thing-A-Lings. What a surprise when we discovered they still had plenty- we splurged and picked up a dozen. Also noticed the other array of tantalizing pastries they had. The cherry Thing-A-Lings were fresh and tasty. I can see why they have a cult following. I saw a local news feature on Cherry Thing-a-Lings, and that they were only available here for five days every year. The dates were February 16-20, and they looked delicious so I immediately jumped in my vehicle and made the hour and 15 minute trip from Carmel to Batesville. When I arrived I saw a long line that wrapped around the outside of the building. It was also cold and windy. I was in line for two hours and 20 minutes before I entered the bakery, which had only a small customer area in the front. A sign on the door stated there was a maximum of 8 customers inside at a time. You told the employee how many dozen Thing-a-Lings you wanted to purchase, and paid for them, $20 per dozen. Then another employee handed out the boxes of hot fritters straight from the fryer. The employees were super friendly! They appeared to be enjoying the occasion. While I never thought that I would spend two hours and 20 minutes in the cold and wind waiting to buy cherry fritters, I must admit it was worth it. As soon as I got my Thing-a-Lings I walked quickly back to my car, blasted the heat, and ate a hot cherry fritter. It was truly amazing. Full of cherries, lightly glazed, still hot, it nearly melted in my mouth. Definitely different than any other fritter I have ever had in my life. The long, cold wait in line was interesting. People were discussing where they had driven from to purchase Thing-a-Lings, and many had driven for hours from cities all over Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. There was even a port-o-potty for customers who were waiting in line. Many people said that they made this trip every year. Most people were buying at least four or five dozen of the fritters. A few people told me they buy enough to freeze and last 11 months until the next Thing-a-Ling day. Quite a few couples took turns: one person standing in line while the other got warm in the car, then they switched. As we waited in line, people carrying boxes of Thing-a-Lings walking back to their vehicles shouted encouragement, telling us, "It's worth it!" According to their website, they sold 199,584 Thing-a-Lings last year. I ended up buying 5 dozen cherry Thing-a-Lings to share with friends, and freezing some for future occasions. Definitely worth the drive to Batesville and the long, cold wait in line. Although next time I will dress warmer. read more

Stopped here for a quick donut. I've always wanted to try their famous Cherry Thing-a-Lings but today was just to try donuts here for the first time. We had tiger tails, blueberry donut holes and I tried a peanut butter and jelly macaron since I love these and have never had that flavor. All were good and I'll be back! read more

I visit Batesville once a month for work and on my last visit (the office I support is closing) I discover Schmidt's Bakery. Its a travesty D: I bought some macarons (mmm, tasty) and a small slice of fruit cake.. and I regret only getting a small slice! Literally the best fruit cake I've ever had! All most all fruit and nuts, not bready, definitely fitting it's name. Unfortunately I won't be traveling out to Batesville for work again. Since my original review, I learned that they offer Cherry Thing A Lings just one weekend a year, in February. This will now be an annual event for me. They run the bakery like a well-oiled machine, keeping the line moving quickly. Mine were warm and fresh from the fryer. I ate one in the car and closed my eyes as it melted on my tongue. read more

Made our annual trip from the east side of Cincinnati to Batesville Indiana for the infamous cherry thing-a-lings! If you have never experienced this you are missing out. These are only produced one time frame a year on Presidents' Day weekend and the exclusiveness makes it such a fun trip and thing to enjoy. Do yourself a favor and plan on this in the future, it is definitely worth your time and money. They are 20 dollars a dozen and so fresh and delicious. This is the second time that I have stopped at Schmidt's the bakery is located next to the Batesville Farmers Market. The staff are quick to wait on you and there is usually a small line inside the store. The first time I came in I ordered some sort of nut roll and coffee with cream and I really did not care for either one. This time when I came in I ordered the Butterfinger donut and a cappuccino. I still did not care for the donut I am not sure what it is. The cappuccino was just okay. It does appear that this place is popular for something called a cherry thing a ling and I have not tried that yet. Next time I'm at the Farmers Market I will order that and maybe a latte? They also have T-shirts and gift items for purchase and it appears that they also do cakes. Delicious! That is the only word to describe their items. Fresh from the ovens/fryers/whatever they use, hot and tasty. As you walk in you are greeted with a cozy and warm atmosphere. The service is usually very quick and to the point, you walk up, pick out the ones you want, and pay. Thats it. If you are passing through on a road trip or whatever you may have going on you should definitely schedule a stop! read more

Was driving on Interstate 74 and decided to go a few extra minutes for local food, instead of chain establishments. After lunch, stopped in Schmidt's for the first time. Got a pastry of some sort, I think called a whopper (not sure). Oh my word. Best pastry of my life! Walnuts and icing and not even sure what else. I ate half and saved the other half to savor later. I've been to Schmidt Bakery before and waited in line at 4 am for the Cherry Thing-a-lings. They have always been amazing. This year due to work, being pregnant, and moving further away I had no time to go and stand in line. I had them shipped to my parents house who live closer to the bakery. The next town over by the way. When I called to order they asked for my address and how many I wanted. Then my credit card info. They then hung up the phone rather quickly. They never told me how much shipping was or that there was a credit card processing fee. 3 dozen turned into $80+ out of my account. Not worth shipping ever again. They arrived yesterday and came squished in a small box. When I called today they kind of brushed it off and stated that they were all shipped and packed the same way. When I asked about the prices, they stated that they were rather busy, even missing calls during ordering and usually people ask what the total is when on the phone. I told her I was hung up on after I gave my credit card info and that was it. They offered me 2 dozen to replace the 2 that were squished. They didn't offer a refund or anything. Just felt that customer service wasn't the best this go around. My mom went to go pick up the replacements and the person behind the counter just walked away when my mom spoke to her. She came back with the 2 dozen and gave them to her. No "hi" no "sorry they were squished" NOTHING. Just not a fan of customer service. They wouldn't honor the discount printed on the $5 Batesville High School discount card. "Buy a dozen donuts at regular price and get 6 donuts free." The clerk said policy was a max $5 discount. Then that is what the card should say, especially since there is no donut for sale at 6 for $5. read more

Our GPS could NOT locate this place! We finally had to stop and ask for directions. When we got to the shopping center, we still had to drive around looking for the bakery. They have a little red awning and are beside the office supply store! My husband ordered the maple frosted cinnamon roll and he said it was dry. I had the jelly filled donut. It was OK, but I've had better. No place to sit in this little place -- make your order, get your sack, and get out. Coffee cake was delicious. Flavorful but not too sweet. Probably the best glazed donut I've ever had and the cranberry thingaling is pure bliss! The only thing keeping me from giving them a perfect 5 is that the coffee was aggressively mediocre. Now I am certainly biased because I have worked here for three plus years, but it has caused me to be picky about other bakeries because their stuff is just so good! Much better than chain baked good that you find at Starbucks or Panera because Schmidt's bakes fresh every day. Dunkin' can't say that. My personal favorites are a white cake with sprinkles, a classic glazed donuts, and they have delicious fudge brownies that are typically not seen. Breads are great too, go for vienna and if you're in around the holidays try some butterbit dinner rolls! I used to eat them plain while working! My gf went into the bakery to get some thing a lings tonight and she was greeted in the rudest way possible. The young girl at the counter who was about 18 years old looked at her and said you have to leave. The open sign was on the door and there was still 10 customers inside. The man in front of her said just stay I was late too coming in. Another person came in after my gf and she yelled at them to leave that there closed now and they left. She turned and looked at my gf and threw her arms in the air and yelled I told you to leave I am not serving you. My gf said well the open sign is still on you might want to turn it off. The girl replies I don't care and yelled at her again and said I am not serving you and that you have to leave. All she wanted was some thing a lings. She came back to the car in tears I said what is the matter and she proceeded to tell me what happened. I couldn't believe it. As Schmidt's has been a place that my grandmother has gotten bread and rolls from for years for the restaurant in Oldenburg when I was a little boy at Wagners. I understand that people have bad days and that there was a long line of people wanting to get there product. But there was no need to be so rude. So my gf left and she served everyone else in the store. I couldn't believe what she was telling me. I was shocked that such a well known place in town would hire such a rude girl to work for them. So now I'm sitting here writing this and still wandering if I even want to go back and give them my business ever again. All over a couple donuts.
