My wife and I are fairly new to craft beers and he was patient and informative. He explained the various beers on tap and made suggestions based on my wife's preferences. I don't know what was going wrong when my husband and I visited but none of the beer was drinkable. We tried several beers of different styles. None of them were true to the style and they didn't taste good. The hazy IPA wasn't hazy. The Pineapple IPA just tasted like pineapple juice. I took about 3 drinks of my first beer and just gave up. I've only ever been to one other brewery where I couldn't find a beer I liked, and I've been to many breweries across the country. They are currently soft opening with a grand opening date of May 31. I really enjoy the peace and the beer. The building is in the back of an office park, but it is surrounded with trees and foliage. You walk into a large, open, and inviting space that is brightly lit. There are plenty of tables and seats, including an area with bus seats, to really remind you of school. There are 3 main screens, 2 playing sports or science channel, and 1 with the current tap list. Additionally, there is a really excellent outside seating area that is supremely relaxing. You can go out there and completely forget that you are right off franklin gateway. It's very quiet. Finally, last, but not least, the beer. I thought several of the beers were very good to excellent for a first run batch. One of the owners, Thomas, was very excited to talk about the beers and the space. They also sell home brew equipment and if you like one of their beers, they will sell you everything you need to brew if. Overall, excellent space and great beer. I can't wait to go back there! I had horrible experience here tonight. I went to enjoy a couple of beers with some friends for my birthday. The brewery is now requiring mask only for those who are ordering beer or walking through. Everyone else can sit at the bar or in their seats without wearing a mask. How is this helping prevent the spread of COVID? On top of all this, the owner decided to cuss me out for not wearing my mask correctly. This happened while everyone around me had no mask on at all or had them pulled down on their faces. Their constant rotation of new beers is amazing(unless you find a beer that you can't get enough of and show up one day and they are out cough cough 1.21). The people are great and very friendly. Ask questions. They know their stuff. With everything that happened with Covid they have been very honest and upfront about their restrictions. Some might not appreciate their restrictions but I am one that is very happy with them. Just put a damn mask on until you sit down. Simple. I needed a beer fix and didn't want to drive to South Carolina to get it from the source. I stumbled upon this place via untappd. Why not, I thought....my DD and I arrived on a terrific Tuesday afternoon. We were the only ones for a while then a steady stream of patrons came and went. The gentleman behind the counter help guide me to the types of beers that pleased me. My rating...4 of 5. Why, mainly because the place was geared toward male clientele and designing one's own beer, which by the way was okay and just wish there were more people hanging out.... but...I get it. We moved to Georgia from Tacoma, Washington about 2 years ago. I was a part of the local home brewing scene and had very established relationships and expectations for service, availability, and recommended recipe options. Upon finding Thomas' store, I have found that his operation is top notch! I immediately fell in love with his store design (which he built most of!), and most importantly the service. Thomas not only uses software to help you build your own recipes, but he saves your profile, so you can go back and easily re-brew a beer. His growler selection is always diverse, ensuring you are getting the beer that you can't find in a bottle. One of my favorite things to do here, is try a flight of his mostly local (but not always) offerings. He also carries a wall full of craft beer from all over the country, if you are looking to customize a six pack. Once again, most of the items will be things you won't find at your local grocery. Another unique part of his business is that you can brew your own all-grain recipes in store, and let it ferment in his temperature regulated refrigeration unit! This is amazing, as it's college level, personal training on all grain brewing. If you are an experienced extract brewer, it's a great chance to use top of the line Blichmann equipment to learn to move to the all-grain process. Driving by while out exploring on a nice day, I found this place purely by accident. Being an avid home brewer for many years, I was excited to discover a brewing supply shop relatively convenient to my home. The guys who work here are super nice, and extremely well versed on brewing beer as well as drinking it. This is the kind of knowledge you hope for when going into a brew supply place, and they've got it. Stocked up on a good selection of craft beers as well as a brewing kit. I can't recommend this place enough. I just hope they expand their stock so that their selection of equipment is a little wider. They just opened, so there's room - and time - to grow. read more

Was down visiting some family over thanksgiving weekend. Was staying at the FUNkles place, and had to get a way for a bit, as the afternoon there would have been spent unpacking boxes. So we looked for a nice place to kill time in the afternoon. There was a possibility of going to see the mother, but the timing didn't work out correctly, so that didn't happen. We scrolled through most of the breweries listed on yelp, and found a majority to be closed on Sunday. This place was recommended by an aunt, even though she had never been here. We went in, and were immediately impressed by the draft selection. Not just great local beer on tap, but also some very nice rare beers from throughout the rest of the U.S. We both got a flight, because that's all you can do. We thought about joining the "Flight Club", but knew we shouldn't ask, because ... the first rule is YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT FLIGHT CLUB!!! As we were getting ready to leave, we looked for a shopping cart, or other method to carry beer out, but that didn't exist (I'd assume most locals just go in for a mixed 6), as we were visiting a way out of area place, we picked out several beers to go, all local and not available in Champaign/Urbana. Again, no cart, so we ran out to the car, and pulled out the cooler, and brought that in as our own little shopping cart. Filled that up, and wound up getting more than 2 cases worth of beer. The overall bill was really low (we thought they didn't ring it all up; but they assured us they did). While we were there, a couple was transferring a beer they had brewed from primary fermentation into secondary, and doing an addition of whiskey soaked oak cubes. The lady seemed a tad upset that they weren't using a higher end whiskey and were using something from a plastic bottle. The staff (and us) assured her that the quality of the whiskey would not come through, and all you are really looking for is whiskey flavor (and oak), so you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on a bottle of Van Winkle, you can spend $3 on a cheapo, and wind up with a good (if not better) product. Let your beer shine, don't make it about the whiskey. When the brewery I work at hired a new assistant brewer, who had a homebrewing background, I asked him how he liked the job... the job is just like homebrewing, except cleaning on a much larger scale. This place does the cleaning for you (if you brew there) (or so it seemed). So, you can have all the joys of brewing a 5 gallon batch of beer, without messing up your stove, without making the entire house smell like you brewed, and without having to spend your time cleaning, brewing, cleaning while brewing, and cleaning once you get done. Also, you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment just to brew a batch of beer. read more

I can't speak on the home brewing supplies here as I don't personally home brew, but from what I hear this is a really good place for everything you'll need. However, you don't need to be a home brewer to enjoy Schoolhouse, as they also have a number of really good beers on tap as well for you take home in your growlers. Their selection of taps include some of the best beers from Georgia that you usually can't find at too many other places. Even more, they don't have a huge selection of cans and bottles, but what they do have is definitely the good stuff and worth a look at. If do frequent this place often, they do have a monthly program available at different tiers, and it seems to be at pretty good prices. Worth a look at if you're always buying beer! read more

I am writing this review as someone who has visited schoolhouse a few times and been thoroughly unimpressed. Unfortunately they're the only homebrew store anywhere around where I live, near the Marietta GA location. I will explain my most recent visit. I brewed a beer recently (all ingredients purchased online) and I do still bottle my beer so I needed to pick up some priming sugar. I went into Schoolhouse to get this. The guy at the register asked what I needed and I asked if he could give me two 4oz bags of priming sugar. My scale which I typically use at my house was broken which is why I asked him to weigh it out. If you bottle your beer you will understand this is a normal amount to request for a 5 gallon batch and is actually the prescribed amount for many of the brew kits that Schoolhouse sells. He went into the back for a minute, and came back with 2 bags. I paid him and left. After I bottled my beer, I was looking through my email and saw my receipt from Schoolhouse. The receipt stated two 5oz bags. I hoped maybe it was a typo and I decided to order a scale online to double check. When it arrived, I weighed the second bag and it was 5oz. As any homebrewer knows, you put a lot of time and effort into each batch. This was my first batch on my own. I usually brew with friends but decided to try one myself. I did everything for this batch very carefully and made sure it was all correct. My beer is now entirely overcarbonated after only 4 days of conditioning, ruined in my opinion because the staff at this store does not care or just does not listen. A simple request. Two bags of 4oz of priming sugar. Too complicated for these guys. I don't think most of them even know how to brew. This is just a guess but based on the help I get when I'm in there I would not be surprised at all. They are always out of multiple ingredients for THEIR OWN kits and always have to give out substitutes. They ran out of Centennial hops one time after telling us that Centennial hops are basically the most commonly used and some of the best/easiest hops to utilize. This is just one of many bad experiences I've had. It is always something. I will not be returning to this store. I would rather drive across state lines if necessary than give these idiots my business. read more

My wife and I went here last night to support PAWSITIVE an organization that helps get animals fixed for people that can't afford normal vet procedure. This place is great! We are beer nerds.We just moved into Marietta last year. We have visited several growler fill stores in the area. All of them have a unique feel. Schoolhouse is great in that it give the total immersion in the beer environment. The staff loves talking beer and will help with anything you need. The prices are good too. I've never been to the physical store, but I ordered some brewing supplies online and received receipt of payment. Weeks went by without receiving the supplies, notice of shipment, or tracking number. The store never responded to my numerous emails and every time I contacted them by phone I was always told it would ship that day or the next. I had a very poor experience at this brewery. The mask rules make absolutely no sense. Why does the person standing at the bar placing an order have to wear a mask, but as soon as they sit down at the bar to drink their beer they are allowed to remove their mask? Makes no sense!! Customers sitting at tables in the brewery do not need to wear a mask, but as I walked through to use the restroom, I was asked to put my mask on. I'm not against masks, but some consistency would be great. Bartender was very rude about the mask, but had no problem with talking to people sitting at the bar with no mask.. I haven't had him put together a recipe with me like Dennis used to do back in the day, simply because I got out of that (who's got time when there's so many great brews out there to try!), but I expect he can do wonders. Selection changes frequently, he gets hard to find brews on tap, & he knows his stuff. Meetings to exchange brews, share home brews, meet brewers... Great little spot with very friendly and helpful staff...and very friendly and cute dog. This small little store front managed to house quite a variety of items from home brewing equipment, unique bottles/types of beer, glassware, taps which you can sample, growlers for sale, AND (what I found the most interesting) home brewing classes. The staff member explained that during the class you can choose what kind of beer you'd like to brew, they'll provide you with all the supplies and ingredients then show you how to brew it. Thomas runs such a great place here: friendly, knowledgeable and a great selection of specialty draft and bottled beers. I recently took my hubby there for a brewing class for his birthday and it was a GREAT experience. Craig and Thomas know SO much about brewing and walked us through every step, from tasting the grains, creating the mash, learning about and adding the hops and yeast, fermenting, cleaning, etc., all while sampling some fine brews and learning about the science and fun behind brewing. We can't wait to go back and bottle our batch this week! I highly recommend taking a brew class, whether with your sig.other or a group outing. So much fun!! Tons of brewing supplies for the home brewer, which hopefully we'll become. We usually stop there at least once a week to get a growler, and sometimes bring our dog, Ella, so she can smooch it up with shop dog, Ben. Fantastic people, environment, education and, well, BEER!
