I have never fished before in my life. Not that it makes me any less of a man, (I mean, I've chopped down trees with my bare hands, I eat steak on the regular, I've punched things and I drink Jack Daniels), however, I felt like my life was missing something. I'm a hunter-gatherer, and I haven't hunted or gathered anything outside of a grocery store. Enter Schooney Charter Fishing. This guy was amazing on a number of levels. I went with two of my siblings and my brother brought along his two sons, ages 9 and 5. First off, they make this as effortless as possible, bating your hooks and casting for you. If you get curious, ask and they showed you how. The captain and his sidekick were extremely patient with my nephews, answering their never-ending supply of questions. They moved from spot to spot, always keeping in contact with other boats to find out where you would have the most success. We fished mainly for Sea Bass, and the occasional Blue Fish. However, they also offer small tuna fishing, shark fishing and cod fishing earlier in the season. Also, on your way back into the harbor, he'll stop by his lobster traps, and whatever is in there, you can have as well. Nice little added bonus. The pricing isn't all that bad, ranging in between $400 and $600 depending on how long you stay out, or if you go tuna fishing, as that's a longer trip out to sea. But if you have a decent day, you can basically make it back in fish. After your day is done, they will clean and fillet your fish for you. Grab a cooler, because you are not going to want to let any of your catch spoil. I've been scarfing down Sea Bass for the past three days like it was my job. Which is good, because since I've discovered "Yelp" I've been paying a lot less attention to my real job. Outstanding. My two sons and I went out for a half day with Layton, and we had a fabulous time. Very knowledgeable about the fish, and good at reading people as well. We got as much help as we needed, but not too much. Landed three keeper stripers and had a great afternoon in the sun. read more

We had an amazing day out on the water with Captain Eric! We caught a solid amount of fish which we were able to take home and cook ourselves, in addition to having tons of wildlife sightings. Eric let us tell him wherever we wanted to go and whatever we wanted to do, but also was extremely helpful and gave great recommendations for what to do. We recently took our annual family vacation to Cape Cod and we decided to charter a fishing boat with Capt. Eric for the second time. The first year we came back with 5 striped bass and I said "beginner's luck". But this year our magnificent bounty included 7 bass, 4 lobsters, and 1 unlucky crab, so I am FULLY convinced that Eric is the MAN and every fishies foe! Eric is knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and knows how to ensure a good experience. His boat is clean and capable of holding all the fish you will catch! I have been on a lot of charters boats and this has been the experience of a life time. I highly recommend Schooney Fishing Charters. We had a phenomenal time on Captain Eric's boat. We were a party of six, all beginners, two kids and one 82 year old. Captain Eric was super with all of us - easy going, incredibly knowledgeable, great with the kids. He never talked down to them, gave them encouragement and listened easily when they screamed what direction they wanted to go. He knows his stuff and we caught a lot of fish, a few lobsters and saw beautiful whales up close! Now I know some of that bounty is luck, but he really knows what he is doing and gave us all excellent opportunities to experience the water. The kids reeled in fish as big as them. The boat is clean and comfortable and there is a toilet! He was very generous in his time and knowledge. We're so grateful to have found him and will most definitely go with him again when we are in the area! read more

Captain Eric starts as a man of few words, but then makes up for it with lots of knowledge. He listens to his charter! When we got stuck fishing for bait and couldn't catch a thing, he heard our son wanted to see whales, and took us to see whales (on the way to more fish). We got closer than the actual whale watching boats, and it enhanced our experience. We kept catching Blue Fish (wild fish, scary teeth and not good for eating), but Captain Eric stayed out longer for us so we could try and catch a striper. No luck - but an A for effort. We had an awesome time today whale watching, we saw the biggest whale EVER, and I am not a whale watching fan. Even after we told Eric that we were fine with going back to port, he insisted that we stay until we saw a whale. It was a great day on the bay and ocean, truly memorable. Thank you Eric!!! read more
