Disregard the guy from Canal Winchester. He has no idea what he's talking about. This is one of the Great Triumverate of German butcher shops in Columbus, the other two being Thurn's and Schmidt's. All three started in German Village, but after a while Schumann's moved to 3-C and Thurn's moved to Greenlawn Avenue. Schumann's German roots are evident in the quality of their meats. Every cut of meat is American or Canadian beef of the highest quality. They also carry Ohio beef. They have some house specialties, like their fresh, handmade submarine sandwiches. John, the current owner, is virtually a family friend now since my grandmother purchased her meats here about 20 years before I was even born (his father and my grandfather had a business relationship until they both retired). If I weren't moving out of state, I would continue the family tradition. John is always in the store, and he's always making sure his customers are treated well. The staff is made up of people from the neighborhood. Some of my schoolmates from high school work there now. In every way you could possibly imagine, this is a family establishment. Canal Winchester called it a stench. I honestly don't think he's ever been in a butcher shop before. I've been in several, and they all smell like this - and it's a good, comforting, if-I-stay-here-any-longer-my-stomach-will-eat-itself smell. It smells amazing in here. I really don't think high-quality meats are supposed to smell anything but delicious. They're always busy during the dinner rush and on weekends. It's especially busy during the first two weeks of the month when people come in with their food stamps. Grab a number as soon as you get in the door. It's a system that has never failed and you'll be given the stink-eye by other patrons if you don't grab one. You might be in there for an hour or so, but don't get mad and walk out. Everyone on staff is doing their absolute best to get everyone in and out as fast as they can without sacrificing customer service. Again, disregard the guy from Canal Winchester. I don't know what that dude from Canal Winchester's problem is... maybe the air was blowing the wrong way from Frank Road... or maybe he forgot to take that pill he takes to make his flatulence smell like bakery fresh cinnamon rolls.... who knows? In any event, I've been buying my meats from Schuman's Meats for fifteen years, and remember my parents buying meat there growing up. It's everything you could ask for out of a full-service butcher. They'll accommodate just about anybody... you like your meat trimmed a certain way, no problem.... Awhile back they even got me in buffalo meat.... mmmmmmmmm. Unbelievable. Their staff just accused my husband of theft - stealing eggs one at a time (over a period of months, natch) and putting them in his pocket. They say they have witnesses. They say they've seen it with their own two eyes. They say they have it on video. If you're going to make accusations, they damn well back them up, because not doing so opens them up to a defamation case (since they found it necessary to accuse him of this in a store full of customers). We've been long time (10 yrs +) customers who have frequented this store (one of the last remaining locally owned butcher shops) and who spend hundreds of dollars there every month. Why, on that is good and holy, would my husband (whose salary is in the six figures, btw) steal an egg (worth .20) not just once, but repeatedly over the course of several visits. Maybe in six months he'll have enough to make creme brulee. If they feel we are thieves, and you say that you have footage to prove it, then put up or shut up. Call the police and get them involved, because he has done absolutely nothing wrong. We've already decided never to frequent your store again, and will also share our experience with everyone we can. If they think so little of us and the business we bring to them, and (in their words, not his) feel the need to "watch him like a hawk", then they don't need us in their store - because apparently if they think that we are thieves, then they all are complete idiots. read more

Best meat around! Great customer service and friendly workers every time I go. I will not buy meat any place else!!

My first time in and I was impressed. Mostly by the staff, but still impressed. It was crowded as I was warned it would be and of course people were being impatient and taking it out on the employees. Somehow the employees all seemed to just keep a smile on their face and keep on going. We ordered a whole strip and had them do 1" cuts and wrap all 14 steaks individually to which they gladly obliged. We also ordered burgers and bacon and were a little indecisive at first, but the staff didn't even hint at being annoyed. The steaks have all been grilled by now and they were great! Burgers were good and we haven't tried the bacon yet so I can't comment on that. We also purchased jams and honey and pies which were made locally and have been very happy with everything. This place is the best, cleanest, friendliest market I have ever seen in Columbus. I just bought the best meat I have ever bought for lunch meat and steaks and chicken. I live right by Carfagnas, and although it's a fine place. It is just not as clean looking as this market...I would recommend you try Schuman's quality. Shuman's to the Rescue! I made the mistake of not buying a frozen turkey early enough to thaw. I drive up to Shuman's on Tuesday night right before they closed hoping against hope that they could save my bacon, and they did! Love and behold a beautiful 17 pound turkey that was in the fridge, already smoked and ready to go! I grabbed a ham and that bird and we were off to the races! Thank you Shuman's! The meat is fresh and 100% better than grocery stores. The butchers are all very friendly and knowledgeable. One of a very few companies, if any, that give out Christmas calendars too. High quality meat and cheeses at affordable prices. I highly recommend Schuman's Meats. read more

Schumann's is the best place for meat selections.Along with walking in to get what you need,you can also call ahead.They open early, which is SUPER convenient for me, since I work first shift at my job..I can call ahead,and pick up my order when I get off work. We lived in Florida for 7 years. Never could find any good meat or cheese. Moved back to Ohio 5 months ago and were shopping local grocery stores, but still they came up short. We visited Schuman's about a month after moving, and now we only shop there for all our meats and cheeses. Not only are the prices awesome, but everything is fresh not frozen/thawed from the grocery store. We spend less at Schuman's. May I have a sample please of that Red Hot Hoghead Cheese,,, sure you say, well what about the souse. Would you mind telling me the difference between souse and Hoghead Cheese. (Pickling) Wait a minute this sample is dinner size... like how many calories is this? 80 you say. (Andrew Zimmern eat your heart out!) Those people behind the counter serving me... and laughing non stop and having sooo much fun. I was having a childhood throwback moment and wanting to get a small purchase of this sweet pure lard and they made it so much fun. I stayed away from the Cracklins and they had the skin still on some of the bacon. They even had Pork Bellies. Yes I think they have it all or will special order and or prepare. The difference between butcher shop meat and grocery store is amazing. I've never bought meat from the grocery since going here. I'll come out and say it, if you're going on the first part of the month GO EARLY!!!! It gets crowded with all the food stampers buying deli meat and cheese by the slice and others filling their carts. Theft must be an issue here because I have heard the staff talking about someone just walking out with food. It is quite aggravating to say the least. The difference in wait time from the first of the month compared to the last few days of the month is crazy. If you can get past this particular crowd and the odd stench of the place then you'll get great service and product. It was nice to see that they carry Queen City sausages, the same that you can get at the Reds games. read more

Living in the hilltop area,we don't have far to drive if we want great meats ! The prices are somewhat more than,let's say Kroger,but you pay more for great quality ! They have an awesome selection in their meat case and even sell a few Amish baked goods ! We will never go anywhere else for our meat items ! read more

The store is great. JUST DONT LEAVE A BAG ON THE CAROUSAL! Once you leave, they will treat you like a liar and a complete shit bag when you walk back in and say, hey, i seemed to have left a bag. 3 trips into the store finally resulting in my 70's mother getting what she paid for but that's ridiculous. Ive never had anything bad to say about the place and i can recall going in as a child. Why, when its not "Mothers day" (thats when all the mothers get their welfare) and they are not too overly busy should one have to fight and argue with some guy about whether or not she forgot something. Im sure some one either walked off with it or the cashier who seemed as if she didnt want to do her job, picked it up and took it into the back. Id rather not eat chain store meats but if that ever happens again, you bet Ill find some where else to spend the hard earned cash we WORK FOR! Yes, as other have stated, welfare week is complete hell and they begin to moan and bitch that they arent getting service fast enough but then when its their turn, they spend as much time wavering as they spent waiting to spend HUNDREDS of dollars on food only to most likely sell it for real money! They eat better than I do! Never noticed any foul odors as some one else stated. Its very close to the sanitation department where raw sewage is treated but I live between Schumans and that place and never smell it. The lady with the theft story, I dont buy it. None of it. I`m in my mid fifties and have been shopping here practically since I was born. My late mother used to carry me in on her hip. But they have the best meats and the best customer service. I drive across town to shop here as I now live in Blacklick. I don`t know what the guy from Canal Winchester is talking about the smell. The store is very clean front and back. I have shopped at the store he talks about, but don`t care for it as much as Schumans. Too much wine and other products that have nothing to do with meat at Carfagnas. I go to a meat market to buy meat, not wine. At Schumans you`ll find that they will custom cut and wrap your meats the way you want them to. They also have one of the best deli selections in town. They also have a few other things I like to get like the amish made pies and roll butter. In the frozen cases they have one of my favorites, Stan Evans Sausage. It come in a box and is in individual patties. You only take out what you need or want at a time. Their steaks practically melt in your mouth and their ground chuck is very lean and freshly ground. The store is uncluttered and open, I do avoid shopping there the first week of the month because it is very crowded and I can`t stand for very long due to my arthritis. But if you do go then, the staff does the best they can to give every customer the best service and get them out as quickly as they can. I also like that no matter what if they slice something they show it to you and ask if it`s okay, like the deli meats and cheeses and also if you buy a pork loin and have it cut into chops. I don`t know what I`d do if they ever closed. There`s no where in town that has this big of a selection of meats and deli. None of the other meat stores in town in my opinion can compare to Schumans. read more

Kroggers meat is horrible. I have gone in and seen some of the meat out of date and also just seen horrible cuts that i wouldnt take if they were giving it away. Its alittle more price but for the meat you get and how long it lasts and how freash it is. read more

I have been shopping at Schuman's for over 30 years. They have great products and even better service. I am unfortunately recently disabled and because of this I can't stand for more than 10 minutes. I phoned them today and asked if they could package me up 3 chickens that I could pick up. I explained my situation and they were extremely helpful ! Truly a hidden gem. Being a life long Hiltopper, Schumans is featured in all of life's memorable meals. This Christmas will once again feature a 10 lb prime rib, aged of course. This is the BEST meat in the City. I refuse to buy any grocery store meat since eating Schuman's meats. This summer we purchased a large freezer and decided to try a side of beef from Schuman's. Wow, after eating their steaks and ground round any beef from a grocery store literally turned my stomach. Since then I have purchased their pork chops, beef stir fry and cube steaks - again, all high quality meats. We now only buy Schuman's meats. You simply cannot go wrong with their high quality meat. I have to agree with Gordon M.,,, Schuman's Meats is probably the best and almost, ONLY real meat monger in the city of Columbus and has been for at least 15 yrs. I remember my grandparents turned me on to them when they were living. ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND that likes TOP quality meats and excellent service, From Muirfield to the Golden Ghetto (Upper Arlington) to the Bottoms. Can appreciate their service and quality. I just hope they can hang in there in this economy. I assure you Schumans sells only the best.
