This place is absolutely amazing. I love sausages, and the Hungarian Butcher makes the best I've ever had. So far I've tried the spicy smoked Hungarian sausage, their brats, and a custom made South African sausage. All were top notch. They also have other select meat cuts as well, which I'm sure are just a flavorsome. I'm so happy Columbus has a place like this to add diversity to the city's food scene. read more

Never has product in stock, must pre order/ pay for simple quantities of sausage. Not authentic Hungarian taste unfortunately and very overpriced lacking flavorful Hungarian spice. Not worth the trip or your money. Yuck! Also their shipping prices are ridiculous, 100 dollars shipping, no discounts for large quantities or anything to offset price. Not a good owner.- grouchy doesn't even greet you, he wants your money that's all, not a friendly environment at all and very tiny inside. I've eaten sausages in Spain, France, England, Ireland, Germany, Croatia and now Columbus, Ohio. Asked, which sausage was the best, I'd say I enjoyed them all with beer. The Hungarian Butcher in Columbus, Ohio under chef Dan Vargas has created some exceptionally smoked spicy sausages seasoned with garlic and paprika. I bought the Csubai Slami $14, Gyulai Kolbasz $11.84 and the Debreconi Kolbasz $8.48. The pickles I bought were vinegary,with a hint of garlic and dill. The sauerkraut was made from scratch. It had a medium shred texture and a bit sauer with caraway seeds, The homemade spaetzle with mushroom gravy completed this meal, almost. I stopped to buy a case of Yuengling beer just to make sure I had a completely balanced dinner. I started up the grill which sits on my deck at my condo and settled back to enjoy this meal with friends. The Hungarian Butcher uses old and new Hungarian recipes to produce their sausages. They get their meats from local Ohio farms and suppliers like Sakura Wagyu farms and Woodruff farms to produce their Szalonna, Kolbasz, Sonka, Lonza and Hurka meats. If you enjoy sausages these are an excellent choice. They also sell to high end restaurants in Columbus like the Refectory. read more

Just opened yesterday, and bustling today. Full disclosure: Sweetie went to school with Dan, the owner, who has been in the local food scene for a long time. He ran Double Comfort, a much-missed Short North restaurant, and has been involved with local faves Tatoheads and Ray Ray's, if I remember correctly. Nice little shop in the Linworth strip where Cameron's is, with loads of amazing meats inside. Brats, chorizo, weisswurst, and many other sausages. Several pates, bacon, pastrami, and much more. Cabbage rolls, an assortment of cheese, pickles, a few dry goods, all enticing. Mom picked up some items for a relish tray for a church dinner tonight. I got sausage, pastrami, and pickles. Might grill or air fry the sausages. I suspect the pastrami and pickles will be gone before Monday, or else I'd take them to work for lunch. Edit: I've had several pastrami sandwiches. It's luscious, and flavorful. The pickles are carrots and cukes and peppers, crunchy and vinegary with a hint of garlic and dill. The sausages are huge and tasty. I did them in the air fryer since the weather was too crummy for grilling. We also got hente kolbacz, kielbasa seasoned with paprika. And salonna, sort of a cross between bacon and roast pork that works well as a snack, on sandwiches, or as an ingredient. Closed Mondays, decent hours the rest of the week. We'll be back. read more

They opened within the past few weeks, and I live nearby and happened to see the sign. Let me tell you, AMAZING meats, cheeses, and general charcuterie. I came home and looked up the information on the chef, Dan Varga. Quite the pedigree, which explains to me how they create such flavorful products. In addition to traditional Hungarian sausages and sides, they have beautiful beef options. I decided to order a variety plate of Hungarian sausages and brats. They are named in Hungarian, and I forgot to note which I had but the mild was a delicious blend with bursts of garlic and caraway. The spicy paprika version brought a warming heat that was mellow and stayed with you during the meal in a good way. The sausages are a fine grind, which is a texture I prefer. I also bought their scratch-made sauerkraut, which was a medium shred with caraway and a nice balanced juice, and after heating up it still had a good crunch to it. Additionally, the staff were warm, welcoming, friendly, and spent time explaining anything I needed since I wasn't familiar with the Hungarian products. I told by a close friend that I needed to get to this Butcher shop, and finally stopped in. Everything is so fresh, and has a great taste. The butchers behind the case are knowledgeable and want to make sure your experience is perfect. This day I bought the Kielbasa it was delicious and huge, I ended up sharing some with family. I can't wait to grill this the next time. We also got some of their homemade breakfast sausage again it did not disappoint. Lastly I picked up four of their homemade cabbage rolls, these we priced at $4.00 each and let me tell you thy are fantastic! I also noticed they make made to order Charcuterie Boards that he was busy preparing. These looked really good and price is based on what you put on them. These are also order ahead items. I also must mention the steak selection which I will try on next visit, and yes they even have Wagyu... They are open 11am to 7pm Tuesday thru Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday. We were on our way home and happened to notice this location we had read about and had wanted to try. The smells upon entering are divine! You know it's got to be good. We tried a few sausages and paprika bacon that we originally came for. That bacon was heaven on earth! We are on a carnivore diet and eat a lot of bacon. This bacon melted in my mouth! I've been going to the Hungarian Butcher for the last couple months, and my only regret is that I didn't try them sooner. They have a great selection of fresh meat, of all types. It's locally sourced, and always delicious. It's so much better, both in taste & nutrition, than what you get a a supermarket. They also have a number of cheeses, condiments, bone broth, tallow, etc. Not only is the meat to- notch, but the entire staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful!!! Just phenomenal! Fantastic customer service. Reasonable prices considering this is a small business that specializes in handmade, local based products. Our first time in we decided to try some basics first. We got their kielbasa, breakfast sausage, bratwurst, and of course some cabbage rolls. My mom is Slovak and grew up in Cleveland around a lot of East European influence. She said the kielbasa and breakfast sausage were the closest she has had to what she grew up with. The kielbasa was a skosh garlicky for us, but still delicious and leagues ahead of what you'd find at a commercial grocery. We are fans of Carle's bratwurst in Bucyrus, and the brats from here were very close in terms of flavor (and again, way better than any store-bought variety). We will absolutely be back! We plan on expanding and slowly working our way through all they have to offer (there's tons to choose from). If you like/love meat, are of Eastern European descent, and/or like supporting small, local businesses-you NEED to go to the Hungarian Butcher! read more
