Thurns Specialty Meats is fabulous for your pork, sausage, German specify meats, cold cuts, and cheese. Thurns has been a family business in Columbus since 1886, first at Central Market, then on Greenlawn Avenue on the Southside. They smoke their own meat and cheese. The smoked cheddar is out of this world. They make all their own sausage and have many German specialties, including Braunschweiger, liver pudding, and knockwurst. They sometimes have beef products from OSU AG School. They're only open three days per week, and for abbreviated hours (as of this writing, their website says they're open Thursday 8a-6p, Friday 8a-6p, and Saturday 7a-1p - AND IMPORTANT - THEY ONLY TAKE CASH, but there is an ATM. Long time columbus resident. Finally made it to Thurn's. Pros: I grew up on a farm, and we processed some of our own meat. Thurn's is legit. Fresh. High quality. Can get bulk by the pound etc but also custom cuts as they grab a hacksaw off the rail and slice off the thickness you want of that bone in cut. Hands down the best ham salad ever. Ev-er. Prices are incredibly reasonable for high quality fresh meats. Cons: Limited hours only a few days a week. Which isn't really a con, but I was there on the first day open of the week and a few hours after opening and they were already out of a lot of things. They are trying with covid. But once you get inside it's not really well managed. Small space. No real system to move people from point a to point b. Kinda free for all to not get up in people's business. Which brings me to my biggest con. One of the older butchers got testy with me when I would t step forward to order because there was a lady in front of me that I wasn't sure had been helped yet and I wasn't going to lean over her to look at which ham bone I wanted. I ended up having to be pretty direct with him after he became visible frustrated and short with me. We're all just trying to do our best man. read more

This place has a good reputation, and deserves it. I had heard about it for years, but always lived on the other side of town and didn't have much reason to pass near it. Now I do. I finally made the trek because I read they had weisswurst. That's not something you find everywhere, or really anywhere anymore. I had it growing up, recently searched some out in Wisconsin, and had to get down to Thurn's when I heard they had it. They also have a ton of other sausages, smoked meats, lunchmeats, pork cuts, etc. I got some andouille; it was excellent- a bit of heat but not overwhelming, and clearly made with love. Same was true of the other stuff I got: ham salad, salami, garlic brats, smoked brats. Each one was a standout. My favorites were the andouille, garlic brats, and salami (actually the schenkin, I'm thinking.) Your mileage may vary. Prices are very fair. This ain't grocery-store stuff- it's the real thing. They only take cash, and are in an out-of-the-way place, but this is the place for sausage, and maybe meat in general, in Columbus. read more

A great butcher shop featuring all kinds of sausage, cured and smoked meats, as well as ready-to-eat meats, which was what I was after because I was just visiting for the week and not prepared to take anything raw on the plane with me. The staff was helpful and the business is all about the meat. No frills and no song and dance. I appreciated this and the samples I was allowed to try. Then I had to smell the overpacked bag of deliciousness sitting on the passenger seat next to me. Thank goodness I got a meat stick to eat in the car. First of all, it's crowded - all with people who love this place and have come here forever. And everyone has a suggestion for the newby - one said "try the bacon", and another said "you have to get the ham salad", and a third said "get this", and "get that", and "this is my favorite", and "don't miss this over here". I've never been in a place where everyone was so passionate about what was being sold. The woman standing next to me said "I haven't lived in Columbus for 40 years - we live in Chicago - and we come here EVERY TIME and take a full cooler to take back home...". Yea, Thurns that kind of place. So I ordered and ordered. They were right - the bacon is spectacular. The German potato salad is spectacular. The ham salad is spectacular. I had messaged him saying I wanted to check this place out after reading his July 2012 review. I then promptly forgot about it, remembering again when I saw his ROTD on 12-3-12. Why the hate? He's going to cost me a lot of money, that's why. My taste buds had gotten very used to Kroger's thank you very much, and now? The bar has been raised. Thurns is now my go - to place for meats. I went there Thursday and bought a couple half pounds of lunch meats just to check this place out. Nom, nom, nom and then....The next day I went back.....and bought 3 pounds of lunch meats ( I don't need 3 pounds of lunch meats all at once mind you ). Thank goodness they have very limited hours or I'd go broke. Man is this stuff good! The meats were so fresh tasting, with a little of that smokiness that I love. After my first visit, I have to say that this place is awesome. They have a crazy selection of different meats that you can order in just about any quantity. I wanted to try head cheese, blood sausage, and liverwurst because I'm weird and adventurous.. but I only wanted a small amount. No problem, Thurn's was willing to slice off just 2 oz of each for me and was super helpful telling me about each one too. I also picked up 1.5 pounds of fresh pork loin that I've been grilling for the week, and it's also amazing, clearly solid quality pork. In all I got 1.5 pounds of pork and half a pound of charcuterie type items for only $8- seems like a steal to me. Visiting Thurns is a wonderful reminder of a simpler time when quality and community mattered more. I'm trying to stay away from five star reviews but this place deserves it. Thurns has been family owned and operated for over 100 years. Every time I go in the staff takes extra time to offer me samples and educate me on what's behind the counter. I special ordered a quail and pheasant for Christmas dinner last year and it was amazing. The goose liver pate is excellent and they have the best sausage selection I have ever seen. I could live off the land jaeger and hot sticks we order them pounds at a time. I look forward to shopping at Thurns and don't mind driving to do it. Rock on! read more

A good friend of mine needed to make a stop here after our breakfast at German Village Coffee House, on a late Saturday morning. I'd never been here before, so I was definitely curious, and decided to go with him. Breaking it down. Pluses: - Several varieties of deli meats, bacon, smoked meats; many of which I've never hear of! - I love salmon and bacon. In that order...or not, it doesn't really matter. Given both, and I'm in protein heaven. Just so happens, Thurn's has this request covered, nicely wrapped with a red bow on top ;) - The gentlemen working behind the counter! They were all wearing button-down dress shirts and dress slacks - very sophisticated! Hacking away at meat, while still dressing up. Also, they all had a sarcastic, funny as heck, personality that was right up my alley! - Plenty of parking; easy access off the freeway The not so pluses: - Cash only at this join. Do they take EBT? - They're only open Thurs/Fri/Sat; the rest of the week is spent smoking the meats - When they're out, they're out, which can happen very easily. On this visit, they barely had anything left in the case; Stephen had to go with the end piece of the roast beef. - They only make Ham Salad - no chicken or turkey. The ham salad was too much sweet relish for my likings I definitely plan to stop by on a Thursday - best chance for optimal selection. Stopped by today and found the service to be very helpful, they explained briefly about the curing process and it was really interesting to learn that they make everything in the early week and then sell out by Saturday. A few regulars stopped in and I was happy to see genuine interactions between the staff and those they recognized - that type of service is missing these days and it's so nice to know it still exists. I got a small container of the ham salad and am so woeful at that decision, it might seriously be one of the best things I've ever tasted. It's perfect for a small sandwich or eaten with chips. The smoked ham is also delicious, it's got that fresh smoky goodness to it, perfect for sandwiches. I also bought the bacon, smoked trout and the pepper loaf. No idea what those are like (yet) but thus far everything I've tasted is super delicious. Loved the explanations and recommendations, it was just great service and happy to have found them! My vegetarian brother got me a gift certificate to this place. Thank you! The service was great and the products were even better. On my first visit they insisted that we try about ten different things. Although I was very full from brunch, they were very persuasive. Everything is made on site according to traditional German recipes. I have to agree with Sally M. about the Landjadger as a satisfying, distinctive, crave-inducing snack. I was also impressed by the Schinken, a German smoked meat similar to Prosciutto. Not to mention the best smoked turkey of my life, and some pretty excellent beef bologna. Next time I plan to bring home some double-smoked bacon. Pricing was reasonable for what amounts to an artisanal product. Thurn's only takes cash or check. However, they offered to let my friend take his meat and mail them a check, or put it on "his tab" and pay next time. I can't remember where I read about this place recently but thought I must try it. So we made the 20 mile trek (which we've made similar treks for other food so no biggie) and it was super crowded. It was obvious they knew many customers as they shot the breeze and I like that. What I don't like is that there isn't a number system like Carfagna's has. It was complete chaos. People who came in after us or people who were regulars after us got served before us. Nothing is labeled. So you'd better know either what you want because some things you just don't know what you're looking at. I'm sorry the regulars all know what they want and I'm just perusing trying to figure things out. Yes, I felt your cold vibe staff members but a few little signs identifying the things that are obviously just chucked back in the case make it easier for noobs. I also don't appreciate being publicly mocked for the amount of my order. I needed a little bit of bacon and the hubby was ordering, they asked for the poundage we needed and were scoffed at saying it 'wasn't much.' I said "we don't need much." We're two people, we don't need a friggin' pound of it! (I know...shocking.) He says it's only 3 strips, which is enough for what I need it for and glares at the hubby until he feel uncomfortable and tells him to round it up to four pieces. I'd say next time I would've told him to keep his bacon but for me, there ain't gonna be a next time. Using old family recipes that have been passed down through many generations, they produce the best smoked and/or cured meat products I've found in Columbus or for that matter in any place I've called home. You know you're in for a treat when you enter their establishment and are assaulted (in a good way, of course) by the smell of smoked piggy goodness. Their standout items are, of course, their ring bologna/knockwurst (made with just a touch of garlic), their schinken (think German prosciutto), and their double-smoked slab bacon. My other favorites include their excellent beef pastrami, their to-die-for smoked pork loin, and their portable and savory landjaeger sausages. They're open only three days a week (Thu/Fri 8am-6pm and Sat 7am-1pm) because they're spending the other four days making what they sell. If you want to have the best selection of available meats, go on Thursday or Friday, when they're usually still well-stocked. When it's gone, it's gone; try again next week. Cash or check only, though they've been known to allow regulars to carry a tab (where do you see THAT courtesy in 2010?). I LOVE YOU THURN'S! This is a place I go when I'm preparing for a family cook-out or a big breakfast gathering. The pepper bacon is to die for. You really have to go by the "early bird gets the worm" rule here, because they make only so much per week and when it's gone, it's gone! The garlic sausage is always a hit at my BBQ's. My Dad visits me from York, PA, and always INSISTS that we take a trip to Thurn's so he can load up on his favorite meats. He claims that if he could, he would only make his homemade bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers with Thurn's bacon. Don't forget to bring cash though, because it's cash-only! While on the Columbus Meat-Lover's Tour (with Columbus Food Adventures), we got an in-depth look into the various processes and old-school machinery used to make the meat sold at Thurn's. The men of Thurn's gave all of us an informative tour through the facility, showing us the drying room and the giant smoker. After our tour through the building, we were given a generous spread of delectable meat-based treats including candied bacon, which almost brought a tear to my eye, it was that delicious. This was really one of the best kept secrets in Columbus for awhile. Places like it just don't exist anymore outside of small towns. Sausages, lunch meats, bacon. etc. all made from scratch and smoked on site. I wish they could bottle the smell that hits you when you walk through the door. Before commencing my planned trip to Thurn's for the following Saturday morning, I literally had NIGHTMARES that I wouldn't wake up in time and all the delicious smoked meats would be gone. My weird sleep-worries were for nothing, though. Even though I ended up going to Thurn's on the last day of their supply, I was able to get plenty of tasty meats, including the smoked salmon. Relief. I just loved all the choices-- lunch meats (cut fresh, of course) that you won't find anywhere else, lifted from a past decade. Tongue. Various studded loaves. Salami with all the colors of the rainbow inside. I walked away with some plain ol' smoked ham for sammiches, the aforementioned smoked salmon, and some sliced charcuterie to go with my always-pungent cheese collection. Prices were more than reasonable-- way better than the grocery (and better for you, too, since everything is made in-house and not preserved and processed to the point of practically not being meat anymore). Yeah, the hours are limited and weird, but it didn't translate to poor selection on Saturday as I originally thought. I wish they had a stand in North Market or something. Still, I need to make Thurn's a regular stop during my weekend food-gathering. Cash only. This place is a timewarp to the 1960's. Thurn's is where you go when you know what you want and expect a certain level of historical recipe with your meats. When you open the door the wonderful smokey smell draws you the rest of the way in. It is like being at Cheers where everybody knows your name. There are so many great meats to try. Every time I am in there someone has something I have never had, I get a sample and this becomes my new favorite. Except in my opinion nothing is better then the Schenkin which is the German version of Prosciutto. Fabulous with cantaloupe and fresh mozzarella or tomatoes and basil. The Canadian Bacon is great for breakfast, lunch or snack-ask my daughter . My 7 year old nephew loves the mustard tongue. There are no cash registers and no credit cards. The men wear ties. Thurns has been around since 1896 and there is a reason for this. It is old world in this crazy modern world. Go on Thursday though for the best selection. I've never had anything here that I tried and did not like. Some of the best smoked meats you'll find anywhere in central Ohio, and a great selection of fresh pork. I've started coming here regularly for knockwurst and kielbasa to send to my parents in Kentucky, and my wife loves their liverwurst and braunschweiger. The people here are all really friendly and personable, are very familiar with everything in the store, and have great recommendations depending on your personal tastes. For items you can find in grocery stores (or, at least the rough equivalents; just about everything here is going to be way better than what you'll find in Krogers, Giant Eagles, etc.), prices are comparable, or maybe ever so slightly higher. I always seem to spend less money than I think I will for the amount of food I end up getting at each visit. Just keep in mind the store is only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and it's cash only. There's an ATM on site, but it's better to come prepared ahead of time. read more
