Can I just live here? Scotia Lodge went beyond our expectations by a mile, and then some. When we saw the price we thought, is this too good to be true? It's true! They have managed to blend the historic nature of this hotel with modern amenities perfectly (without feeling too boutique/hipster-y). Greeted with a free beverage upon arrival, we made our way to our room to find it clean and cozy, with ample outlets, reliable wifi, and a clawfoot tub. After four days on the road, a soak in that tub gave me life! There is a restaurant serving breakfast 8-12, dinner 5-9 (we got The Lumberjack waffle sandwich for breakfast. Not sure what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting in-house recipe waffle mix stuffed to bursting with eggs, sausage and cheese. YUM!), and a bar downstairs that has very fair pricing. They also have soaking tubs for $25/hour with Epsom salts and other amenities (we didn't rent it but it sounds great). There is a local grocery store just across the street that has ready made hot/cold foods, beer and liquor, and anything else you may need. Located just north of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, it's a perfect starting or ending point for your redwoods excursion. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, prompt, and informative. The grounds are beautiful, with a large picnic area to enjoy your morning cup at. This place gives Overlook Hotel vibes in the BEST way possible. Can't wait to come back! Check in seemed fine. The hotel is clean overall. the room had bare essentials except ... no hair dryer. Bathroom had a claw foot tub with overhead set up to allow for a shower head. No safety rails for help getting in/out of tub. Seemed dangerous even for a youngster. The mattress appeared old and not comfortable. Rug in the room ... slipped on it.... safety concern. Its obviously an old building and had a little creepy feel to it. No elevator so anyone with limitations would have issues with the stairs. Limited parking. The restaurant wasn't open during our stay. Not the highlight of our vacation. read more

The motel does not advertise that they do not have AC. They attempted to put us in a corner room on the intersection of two busy streets. The desk clerks response to our dismay over the lack of AC and street noise, was we should open the windows. My bigger concern was that gasoline cans and power equipment with gasoline is stored in a garage under guest rooms in the hotel. We refused to stay there and the hotel's response was to refuse a refund. As a side note the facility is outdated with huge stains on the carpet in the common areas and worn out carpet on the stairs. Traveling often comes with surprises - none on this trip have been as delightful as this place. The word "charm" is overused but perfect to describe this lovely hotel. The lobby is gorgeous, the room furnished with taste and comfort, little touches included to pamper like a taste of whiskey and a chocolate. An eclectic decorated hotel in a building with a rich logging day history. The space is revitalized by new owners. Coffee, tea and water available for guests in the lobby. Our room (212) was large with a modern shower. In room pour over coffee set up that we loved, fridge and small microwave. We found the room quiet and windows that opened, one without a screen. Bed was comfortable. No blow dryers or iron in the room but available upon request. Friendly staff. Negatives, no breakfast and room smelled like cat urine upon entering. Afternoon sun and windows closed made the smell very strong. We opened all the windows while at dinner and it wasn't as bad. Wished, there was grab and go breakfast of maybe dairy free yogurt, hard boiled eggs, granola, jars of overnight oats with fixings. A fire pit on the front porch would have been perfect for evening gatherings. All in all we'd return. $482 for two people for two nights. read more

The place is beautiful, however, it lacks amenities. No blow dryer. No iron board. No AC. No shelving space for toiletries. We used the tank of the toilet as shelving and a medication fell in the toilet. It wasn't fun handfishing it out. We left the windows open for circulation. Bad idea. I got bit so bad from mosquitos. We loved the comfortable beds, the Humboldt coffee & knowledgeable staff. This tiny towns history is very interesting & the staff are a wealth of knowledge about it. The breakfast was such a nice break from typical fast food. Soaps & shampoos were lovely, smelled good & didn't dry my skin out like many do. Enjoyed my stay. Plenty of parking available. My review here is specifically for the Massage Therapy I have gotten at this location. The two Therapists I have had experience with has been amazing. Karina provides a life changing deep tissue massage, she is professional and I can't help but melt when I am on the table. Kylee is phenomenal and an expert at relaxation massage. I think I leave this realm and travel to another when getting a massage from her. I believe they use a hemp oil to massage, and my skin loves it. Booking is done on the website which for me, makes the process easier. I did notice you cannot see who you are booking with on the Scotia Lodge site, but you can find names of therapists on the Social Spas site. I called the Scotia Lodge to know who I was booking with in the time slot I wanted. There are baths to add on to the service for free, but I have no had a chance to try those. Maybe next time! I am hoping they make a spa there soon, and I have heard rumors of a salt cave and hot tubs, but as of yet it is not there. I am really happy getting a massage there though. I lived in the Scotia area for 5 years, so it was nice to get a good massage close to my home, because I become jello after and don't want to drive too far. Now I live in Fortuna, and I still drive to the Scotia Lodge to get a massage. The hotel is cute and inviting, (My parents stayed here once when visiting) and I am looking forward to what they create here. I took a walk around the neighborhood before my massage and there is a shop near by called Azilas Cauldron that has books and candles and other witchy things, there is a thrift shop type place next to it that was not open but looked interesting. 5 stars if you are traveling for vacation, 3 stars if you are traveling for work. Pros: beautiful, scenic, comfy, a bar and restaurant are on site, staff are incredibly friendly, and the lodge offers a wide variety of local wines, chocolates and snacks. Cons: no elevator or ramps, rooms start on the 2nd floor (I had cases and cases of equipment that I had to drag up the stairs), no gym, no printing station, the restaurant does not open until 8 am, no desk inside the room to work, and the shower temperature fluctuates. It is located across the street from a gas station and grocery store that is open from 5:30 am to 9 pm, which was convenient. Overall it was beautiful and relaxing. I believe you can even make massage reservations here. read more

An absolutely beautiful place to stay. When I heard about their plans to revive this classic Northern California inn, I didn't think it was possible. But they've done a wonderful job, keeping the stunning lobby, dining room and grounds and modernizing the rooms. Each room is unique, with new, incredibly comfortable beds, dramatic lighting, stunning wall decorations and classic claw foot tubs in lushly tiled bathrooms. Delicious food, artisan cocktails, friendly staff. Family, dog and cannabis friendly. It's just a short drive to revitalizing Redwood forests, including the spectacular Avenue of the Giants. The beauty of this place can't be described in words and the photos don't really do it justice. It's really like stepping back in time to the heydey of this establishment. Scotia Lodge is truly a hidden gem in the forest. We spent New Year's Eve here and enjoyed a fantastic couples massage (Karina and Nicole were amazing!) as well as a few days lounging around the property. We had a two-room suite which was great because my sister stayed with NYE night. All of the in-room amenities from the coffee to the cocktails were well-thought-out and appreciated. Our room also had a claw foot tub which was awesome for a New Year's Day bath and the water pressure for the shower was surprisingly good for an older building. Our heat worked great and we were pleasantly surprised the room had DirectTV which came in handy for movie watching on New Year's Day. Main & Mill's food is great upscale pub food with some fun additions. I enjoyed the jackfruit nacho fries and the burgers are super solid. Wonder Bar is honestly one of the shining stars of this place with incredible interiors, super great staff, and good cocktails. The decor was a healthy mix of SF and Miami, but there we were in the thick of the Redwoods enjoying the vibe! Yes, this place is new and there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out and expectations for modern luxury amenities should be managed (e.g. room service, keyless entry), however, you will kick yourself for not staying here in these early days. I expect this place to hit its stride in the next few years and become a real destination (with prices to match). *Also- it is an old hotel with thin walls facing the hallway so if you have kids, for the love of god- do NOT let them run up and down the halls before 9am. read more

The Scotia Lodge harkens back to the heyday of Humboldt. Situated in the beautiful Eel River Valley, the Scotia Lodge stands tall over the sleepy town that is its namesake. On the inside, Scotia Lodge features beautiful Redwood details and showcases an amazing restoration that remains in-progress throughout the inn. There are detailed carvings of Redwood trees, wood features throughout, and a mezzanine that overlooks a gorgeous lobby. Leading off of the lobby is a ballroom that functions as a dining area, with an in-hotel restaurant (Main + Mill). We dined there for dinner, and it was delicious! Also, the drinks were top-notch, served by a bar attached to the restaurant. Unfortunately, breakfast was not available during our stay, but we were offered complimentary breakfast boxes with snacks and sandwiches or breakfast burritos within. One feature you will notice throughout is that there is ample seating in all areas of the lodge. You can be as social as you like, and we often saw locals and visitors alike reading books and sipping drinks, enjoying the peace and quiet that Scotia has to offer. The room we stayed in (2-room King) was comfortable, cozy, and well-appointed. There were a range of drinks available, pour-over coffee, local snacks, and restroom essentials. There are wood details throughout the room, and sometimes furniture which is time-appropriate for the lodge. There's also comfortable seating, satellite TV, and WiFi available. There is no air conditioning (Eel River Valley weather tends to skew mild) but there is a fan and a heater if necessary. Windows in the room also open up to the outside. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, and the quilt-like comforters were perfect! Important to know: You will receive a physical key for your room. There's no contactless check-in/out due to this, but it definitely added to the charm and nostalgic feel of the stay. The service at the hotel was also superb. We were warmly welcomed, and those who choose to imbibe receive a free drink upon arrival. The front desk staff was knowledgeable about the area and willing to help others make calls or reservations at local restaurants. Special thanks to Michelle, who assisted us and regaled with stories of the lodge's past! With regards to "things to do" there isn't much in Scotia - you may love or hate that (we loved it!). There is a small market across the street, and Scotia is next to a few towns that have a few more shops (Rio Dell, Fortuna). However, it is a beautiful walk around town, easy river access, and there is a cool fish hatchery exhibit near the sawmill. Regionally, the area has LOADS to do, and Scotia is right in the heart of it all. It is situated right on the edge of the Avenue of the Giants, home to picturesque redwoods and a variety of hiking trails. There's Highway 36 nearby, which will take you to many different swimming holes on the rivers during the summer. And you can go north on 101 to other parts of the county to see the ocean, go hiking, see a movie, attend one of the multitude of makers markets throughout the year, or just to soak up the beauty Humboldt has to offer! All of this to say: We would 100% stay again at the Scotia Lodge. The hotel itself is gorgeous, with charming details around each corner. Upon arrival, we received a warm and friendly welcome from Mike. He showed us to our room, which was delightful and included a number of amenities including local coffee and treats. The furnishings were stunning and the room was comfortable. Soaking in the claw tub was a highlight of the visit. In addition, the restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced. I was very impressed with the photos online but the Scotia Lodge just hasn't lived up to them. The walls are paper thin, we can hear our neighbor peeing in the bathroom, their conversation and music/tv clearly. I can smell cigarette smoke coming from next door. The restaurant isn't open during the week for breakfast and there aren't any other options nearby. Oh, and the curtain rod fell on my husband when he was opening the curtains. I also found someone's hair on the shower wall, so showers aren't getting a thorough cleaning which is gross. Super disappointed in our expensive stay. We stayed in the Salter Suite. Pretty can only take you so far. Edited to add: we requested a room change because of the smoke and the new room had two used washcloths hanging over the shower rod. We were also downgraded rooms despite equal and better rooms being available. read more

I loved this place ! I thought it was so cute, the staff were very nice. It's very much like the pictures in terms of the rooms. A lot of the original building work makes you feel like you're in a dreamy but upscale boutique cabin in the woods. What's left to be desired though is eating. Really prepare for burgers and pizza pretty much. The restaurant was fine, nothing special but not too bad either - I liked that you could easily get the food to go to your room if you desired. There are very few restaurants close by. There is a grocery store/deli across the street if you want to get something for the microwave. I would recommend for a quick overnight stop but I stayed for two nights and was definitely hungry which was annoying. read more

I recently stayed with Scotia Lodge. The hotel itself is pretty, but also very old. The water is small, the floor makes sound and so as the door. The most upsetting part is, there's an extra $30 amenities fee on top of the existing booking fee, and it's mandatory. It's like a hidden fee, you wont know that until you pay for the bill. They charge you the "coffee" that they offered in the room, and the juice they greet you when you do the check-in. Who's doing that nowadays? No one by the front desk has mentioned about it, and you dont get a refund if you dont drink them either. What? I was totally not aware of any "extra" services that would be charged until I received the payment. I would totally not go there If I know there's additional charges on top of the existing booking fee. It is disappointing. read more

Like maybe a forest green top or collared tee, or forest green blouse with clean blue jeans and loafers like topsiders or clean white tennis shoes. What I saw today really was not a good look. Wow I loved this place!! Was nervous because there weren't too many reviews but I would stay here again in a heartbeat! Old building, definitely gives off The Shining vibes...and I'm okay with that!! One of the other guests said they experienced ghosts and said they heard the piano playing at 3am! There is a bar that was open late and maybe could have been them...but I didn't tell him that :P. I think the bar is only open until 11...so who actually knows! We checked in at 10 or 11pm and Sara helped us out. She walked us to our room and gave us a quick tour. We get complimentary drinks! Complimentary...not so complimentary because they charge you an amenity fee. My receipt says $30 for Friday, $25 for Saturday. Not sure what the extra $5 would be for. I was thinking they were going to have great shampoo I could take home or something! But no, just alcohol :( For drinkers that's great! For non drinkers, not that great. We stayed in cozy queen 215 and it was very cute. But tiny! I was in charge of writing signs for my friends wedding and had NO room to write them inside. Luckily, right outside our room there was a table and two chairs so I got to do them there! No neighbors on either side of this room!! Nice! Close to the parking lot too for loading and unloading. No elevators, be ready for a workout. Would not recommend the restaurant! We went for breakfast, but maybe lunch or dinner is better. Cute coffee station in room, would be nice for non-dairy creamer options. They do have single serving Silk in the lobby for $3. Felt very clean. I am giving this lodge two stars as opposed to one because the rooms were lovely. We enjoyed adjoining suites thoroughly until the morning. We woke up literally on an ant hill. We did have food in the room, but had put it all away the previous night. When we woke up, there were trails of ants on the floor, in the closet, on our bedding and all over the microwave that we did not use...They were all over everything else as well. I have never experienced this at a hotel. We also woke up around 6:45 in the morning with what seemed to be a construction crew above us. It also sounded like kids were running up and down and jumping maybe off of the stairs. So, don't expect to sleep in here. Since I am a local, I do see myself returning for cocktails and food. This is a good idea but just not quite ready for Primetime. Now called "Scotia Lodge", this is probably a 100 year-old hotel that once served the lumber barons that frequented this old lumber mill town. It's not cheap. A room will set you back at least a couple of hundred for 1night. So we decided to make a weekend trip down from northern Humboldt County to check out the highly-touted renovation efforts. At check-in, we were shown to a nice room with 14-foot ceilings with an art-deco feel to it. It was quite cold in the room, so we closed the ancient, single pane window and put the little baseboard heater on, and decided to find the bar. Oops, the bar is under construction. "Maybe next month", we were told. There was, however, still alcohol available upstairs at a little cubby hole adjacent to a cavernous empty ballroom with a few chairs and tables scattered about. Zero ambience. The martinis, with tip, came to around $15 each, similar in price to the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. They were served in a stemless, plastic glass. You can order a sandwich or other light fare from the same cubbyhole. We returned to our room, which was still freezing, with only a trace amount of heat coming from the single baseboard heater. The TV was wall-mounted with only about 25% of the screen, at best, visible from the bed. So, we slept in our clothes to keep warm, ok ?? The next morning, we awakened to find hordes of ants trailing in, en masse, all over the floor, in our toiletries, all in our belongings. In the morning, at check out, an apology was offered, but no recompensation. No worries. Now let me say, Scotia is a very small hamlet. There is a lumber mill, the hotel, a store, and a few houses for the mill workers. Scotia is adjacent to the town of Rio Dell, a tiny depressing hamlet given over apparently to the cannabis industry as deduced from the offerings in the hardware store. Rio Dell also has a bar, a liquor store, a hamburger stand, an ancient Rexall drug store and 2 dispensaries. That is it, folks. So there is not much at all for visitors to do there. Maybe that's the way they like it. The hotel is trying to raise money via crowd-funding to build a pool. Good luck with that. We were also charged a $25 "amenity fee". Folks, for the money, there are zero amenities. So they are trying to do the "boutique hotel" thing, in the middle of nowhere, without the money to do it properly. The ancient single-pane windows and high ceilings just don't make it when it's 40 outside. Umm, pest control ?? Good hotels don't have pests in the rooms...ever. Maybe in 5 or 10 years, Scotia Lodge might be worth $250 worth of hard-earned money. That time has not come. read more

Stayed one night with my pooch! It's a lovely building and there are lots of touches that make it feel special. The lobby is impressive and beautifully restored. Fun little store area with interesting merch. The decor overall and in the rooms is nice and has lots of nice pieces, and the bed was comfortable and warm. We had dinner in the bar (you order upstairs and bring it down to the bar) and it was fine if not particularly memorable. The drinks were great and inventive, and the bartender entertaining and friendly. And yet...there's kind of a cold-ish feeling. Not so much in temperature but in vibe. A lot of little things make it feel that way - ordering at the counter and fetching your silverware and condiments, the spare decor, the feeling of emptiness throughout when we were there, the limited and a little aloof staff. It was almost as if they were only "kind of" open. Maybe when it's busier and more people are there, it feels warmer? Not sure. The thing is, I've stayed at their other property in Samoa/Humboldt and it had a similar vibe - cold (although it was actually cold there when I visited). I think it comes down to this: This is one of those places that feels well-hyped and insta-friendly. Looking at their website and social media makes the place seem really fun and funky and happening and well done. So much so that when you get here...your expectations might be a little too high. It's just a bit less than what you're expecting. I'll still try it again though, and I hope it's filled in more when I do! read more

I love this hotel. It's beautiful. We drive by a few months before we actually came to stay, and so glad we came back. The building has a bygone charm, but the rooms have been given an update and the service is great. It's old. We could hear some street noise, because neither walls nor window were enough to keep it out. The restaurant is basic, we had a good burger. It's an 'order at the counter, they bring it out' kind of place, with limited options, but since it was cold af outside we were happy to take advantage of the option. This is apparently a work in progress - the owners have plans for expanding and improving and I can't wait to see it. read more

We enjoyed our 2 night stay at Scotia Lodge. The lobby is absolutely gorgeous and has free coffee and water and the staff was friendly. The rooms and bathrooms were updated I believe in 2021, the bed was comfortable, the room had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The food was good they are not pretending to be a gourmet restaurant, we were fine with their menu, it was convenient to get food in the hotel without having to go out. There is a small grocery store across the street if you want to cook something in the microwave in your room instead. The hotel is only 5 miles from the north entrance to Avenue of the Giants which was great! I would not hesitate to stay there again! read more

What a fun historic place to stumble upon while on a Roadtrip! The place is very nice with large rooms, plenty of accommodations and such a great price! The lodge is equipped with everything you could want and more and on top of that they are located across the street from a small marketplace so if you needed anything else you could walk over and grab it! Took over 40 minutes for food to arrive. Every dish was overcooked. Pancakes tasted like whoever made the batter had no idea how. An $86.00 tab plus a tip was far too much to pay. Miss the way this place used to be when it was the Scotia Inn...Went there for New Years Eve for dinner and drinks..food was good, but service was not...staff was very inexperienced and unfriendly, didn't know how to make basic alcoholic drinks. Food is a basic self serve..you order, they buzz you when your food is ready, no table service. Condiments are in little packets like fast food. No additional sauses or dips were offered. Food is placed on a large serving table and you come get it amongst everyone other's orders. No one checks to see if your food was okay, if you want dessert or any additional drinks. Everything is on disposible plates and flatware. And we had to buss our own table. $70 for 2 burgers and fries and 2 drinks was abit steep for the lack of service we received. read more

I booked at the hotel website. Turns out that in the very fine print, far away from the booking page, there is a $30 "Ammenities" fee that was added to the room rate. I also saw that the restaurant was closed after October 2, while on the booking page no mention was made of the closure. When I called to inquire about the fee (about 5 minutes after the booking), I decided to cancel because of the fee and no restaurant, and they advised there was a $25 cancellation fee. After a long time due to Covid and economy and who-knows-what-else (!), the Scotia Lodge is back. I just happened to be biking by with my friends when we popped in and were completely blown away by the beauty of this place in such an unassuming area! I suggest you google the town and the history of the logging industry (of which the Lodge was integral, and perhaps still is). The Lodge is gorgeous inside and totally reminds me of the Awhanee in Yosemite Valley. It's totally old-school with spectacular interiors made from the redwoods from the area and probably milled from just down the street (old Pacific Lumber). Now, this hotel doesn't have much to walk around in, the town of Rio Dell is just across the bridge (Eel River) but its proximity to hiking, the 101, and most importantly, the beautiful town of Ferndale is what makes this a destination. The ballroom and bar (i.e., "Wonder Bar") are truly worth the visit! Gorgeous! The prices are totally worth it and the rooms are beautiful! I'm going to get my friends together and we're gonna block out a bunch of rooms and do some biking, hiking and dining in the area with the Lodge as our "base camp". The menu looks great and all the little spa options and general up-scale treatment you get just for walking in makes me want to stay here and bike over the "Blue Slide" road (instead of driving to 101) back to Ferndale through the beautiful green farmlands! read more

Great stay! Our room was clean and nicely decorated as was the rest of the hotel. Charming, historic hotel. Amenities like chocolates and drink added to the charm. Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. My husband and I were running late after spending the day driving up 1. Called to confirm that the restaurant would be open. It was getting close to closing, and the hotel worker, Tiffany, took our order over the phone to be sure we had dinner after a long day. Would recommend highly! read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Scotia Lodge. It is a beautiful place with many Redwood trees nearby. The staff was very friendly and nice and our room was gorgeous. It had a claw foot tub/shower combination and a large armoire for a closet. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable! The bar was very quaint and friendly and the food was great! The Lodge is a short drive to downtown Fortuna and even closer to the Chapman's Gem and Mineral Shop which was a lot of fun. If you find yourself in the area definitely give it a try. read more
