Raspberry Lemon Drop and Pineapple Ginger Mocktail.
    Shelly S.

This quaint lil establishment was welcoming once the door opened. We sat at the bar and had some tasty cocktails while waiting for a dinner reservation in the next town. The bartender was topnoch and was sure that we were taken care of while we sipped our delicious lemon raspberry martini and pineapple ginger cocktail. The dinner menu looks fanominal and we will be heading back on our next adventure out this way!

    Ribeye is the go too.

Service was excellent and Ribeye was delicious as I remembered it. Would have given 5 stars if not for my wife's prime rib meal coming out cold. It was the strangest thing, everything on the plate was cold, waitress took it back and microwaved it and it turned out delicious.

Prices are up. Food was OK not the typical clientele it used to get. Probably worth another visit.

My two older kids were starving and while we walked through town, we found Ferndale Meat Co . and saw that they sold sandwiches. Prices were great - $9 for a whole, $6 for half sandwich. There is also a dining area adjacent to the area where you order, and it has a ton of pictures of award winning livestock, and it's where the restroom is located. In addition to sandwiches, they also sell sausages and butchered meat by the pound. They also have a basket with little bags of Ferndale sand for sale. Hahaha We picked up 2 order forms, filled them out and gave it to the employee. Not sure how they run their business, but it wasn't very busy, and it didn't seem like anyone was really working. OMG, it took about 45 min to get the sandwiches. Once we got them and the boys sat down to eat them, we realized that the sandwiches were made wrong. They were both supposed to be hot sandwiches and they both were cold. My oldest son's sandwich was missing the pickles. But he was so hungry he didn't send it back to get fixed. My middle son's sandwich was supposed to have mustard, and no mayo, but he got mayo no mustard. I had to go back a couple times with the order ticket to show the lady what we actually ordered and for her to warm the sandwich. She apologized and offered to make a brand new one, but at this point we had already waited so long we said it was fine and just asked for a side of mustard so that he could put it in the sandwich. I am really disappointed with this experience at Ferndale Meat Co., I can't believe it took so long to get our entire order made wrong. It's a freaking sandwich, how hard could it be? Fun fact, Guy Fieri used to live in Ferndale and currently owns the Ferndale Meat building.

There is occasionally a jazz combo outside which can be enticing. Trinidad can be cool, so even with the space heaters, we usually choose to sit inside where the art decor is excellent and interesting. Yes, that really is a Dale Chihuly glass chandelier as you head up the stairs! Service is professional and understated. The servers know the food well and are present without being intrusive. I've been coming here for over 30 years and never had a bad server. Be sure to let them know if you're celebrating an event and they'll make your evening extra special. The food is always outstanding. The appetizer board included with your meal is such a treat of local small bites and hearty dark bread. Let your server know if you want the appetizer board to be vegetarian. Vegetarians and vegans have plenty of delicious entree options that go far beyond the usual 'pasta with vegetables' option such as the Spanakopita or the stuffed bell pepper over portobello mushroom. Meat eaters can enjoy the wide range of special barbecue options, the oysters, or fresh fish. Save room for one of their amazing desserts. We often have the Goat Cheese Coeur á la Crème which always feels decadent and light at the same time. The flourless chocolate cake is simply decadent (and not light) but oh-so-good. Larrupin Cafe is not inexpensive, but it offers great value since the service, ambiance, and food make it well worth the splurge.

The place was pretty busy at 8pm and we sat outside since we had our pup with us. I ordered 3 oysters as an app. I had just read that Humboldt Bay provided a large percentage of the oysters consumed in CA and NV so figured I should order some since we're so close to the source! I was surprised when I slurped it down and it was warm but they were delicious and the sauce on top was very flavorful. (That was my fault for not reading the description well enough; I'm just accustomed to eating oysters chilled) For entree's, I went with the Polenta Veghie lasagna and my husband ordered the Italian Mac n cheese. Both dishes were very good and very filling. I loved the crust of the polenta and the eggplant and cheese filling was delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful and I was impressed with the coziness and warmth of the interior. Great spot for dinner, I'm glad I chose this restaurant!

Papa Joe's, Ferndale, CA…read more Some places earn their reputation not by chasing trends but by simply refusing to change. Papa Joe's in Ferndale is exactly that kind of place. It has been a fixture in this town for over 35 years, and if you walk in expecting avocado toast and oat milk lattes, you are in the wrong building. What you will find is honest, unapologetic diner food cooked by someone who actually knows what they are doing, served in a room full of deer heads, dairy association flags, and enough history to fill a book. The story behind the place is worth knowing. Papa Joe's was opened by Joe Alexandre, who came to Humboldt from the Azores at age 12 and went on to build Alexandre Family Farm into one of the most respected dairy operations in the region. When Joe retired, he and some colkegues bought this spot and described it as a daycare center for retired dairyman, a place where the old guard could gather, play cards, and hold court. Joe has since passed, but the building is still owned by his wife & partners, the spirit of the place is completely intact, and the same waitstaff that has been there for years is still holding it down. The kitchen is now in the hands of a classically trained chef who previously cooked at Curly's and Ridgetop Cafe in Fernbridge. That pedigree shows up on the plate. The omelets are the move here. You pick one meat and two vegetables, choose your cheese, and decide between home fries or hash browns, then pick your toast. I go sourdough and hash browns every time without thinking about it. It is straightforward at Joes, perfectly executed greasy spoon cooking, the kind that does not need to explain itself. The hash browns come out shredded and crisped up just right, the omelet is fluffy and generous, and the whole plate delivers exactly what it promises. They never used to have biscuits and gravy on the menu, but this chef makes them fresh every day now, and they are the best biscuits and gravy in southern Humboldt County. Full stop. Thick sausage gravy, proper biscuits, stick to your ribs, and completely worth every calorie. The vibe in here is unlike anything else in the county. On the walls you will find deer mounts, flags from the Mexican, Portuguese, and Humboldt dairy associations, and artwork that has been hanging in the same spot for decades. They have freshened things up just a touch, but the soul of the place is exactly where Joe left it. The menus were recently redone and they tell his story, which is a genuinely good read while you wait for your food. They also now accept credit cards, which is a welcome change from the cash only days that caught more than a few people off guard over the years. A couple of things worth knowing before you go. This is not the spot for low carb substitutions, side salads, or specialty coffee drinks. You get black coffee, or you doctor it up yourself at the table with the cream and sugar that's already sitting there. The menu is focused and traditional, and that is intentional. They also do lunch, with solid options including a French dip and a good egg salad sandwich, and clam chowder on Fridays that I have not tried yet but fully intend to. If you are someone who needs a lot of options or wants a modified order, this may not be your place. If you want real food cooked well in a room full of history by people who care about keeping a tradition alive, there is nowhere better. Papa Joe's is a four star spot in the best possible way. It is not trying to be five stars, and it does not need to be. It does what it does better than almost anywhere else in the county, and that counts for a lot. Ferndale is worth the drive on its own, and stopping here while you are in town is non-negotiable.
