What a fantastic find! A lot of restaurants are closed Sunday but Ivanhoe was open. Very cool decor in the restaurant and while quiet it was a great vibe. I had the seafood fettuccine, Mom had the mushroom fettuccine and my wife had the tenderloin tips w garlic bread. Our clam chowder starter was amazing w nickel sized clams. The portions were huge! Our server learned it was our daughter's wedding and brought us a complimentary crème brûlée which was outstanding. Service was top notch! Ferndale doesn't have a ton of restaurants but the ones they have are great. This is a must eat! read more

I was part of a large party, so that may have been an issue. Not enough waitstaff to accommodate all tables effectively. Chowder was so so. Bread was dry and burnt on top. I enjoyed the chicken marmalade, but there was a piece of cheese melted over the top. I think it was Swiss? After removing the cheese it was good. Ihad hoped for more mushroom wine sauce. It seemed lacking. No one was thrilled with their meal. All were served except one dish was missed and had to be prepared after the rest of us had their meals. This quaint lil establishment was welcoming once the door opened. We sat at the bar and had some tasty cocktails while waiting for a dinner reservation in the next town. My husband and I dined at the Hotel Ivanhoe for an early Valentine's Day dinner. While there were a few positives, overall our dinner was a disappointment. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Our salads were fresh, and tasty. We made reservations, but it would not have been necessary. We were seated at the back of the restaurant, at a small two top table, near the fireplace. While the fireplace was on, there was no heat. I had my jacket on throughout the meal. We were dissatisfied with the overall meal. Specifically, our vegetables were served cold, there was no Marsala flavor to my Chicken Marsala, the mashed potatoes were the absolute worst (instant, no flavor, more like baby food), and our bread was dry and over reheated to the point of being black on top. When we were offered dessert, we were told that desserts were being "transitioned". The only offering was vanilla creme brulee...not even ice cream or an after dinner foo foo drink. What a let down! The website and the posted menu need to be updated and corrected. The Chicken Marsala comes with baked potato or penne pasta. Not correct, they do not offer baked potatoes. And it is supposed to be chicken breast, not a thigh, which is what I was served. The prime rib is listed at 14 oz. We were offered only a 10 oz. cut. Going out to dinner is a treat, something out of the ordinary and not to be wasted. I would not recommend. I don't mind the extra cost, but I expect better food and that isn't at Hotel Ivanhoe. read more

Do not eat at the Ivanhoe Went there to get dinner tonight and ordered the Pesto Ravioli. The menu clearly specified that the dish contained cheese ravioli. I get about 3/4ths of the way through my meal when I bite into something that clearly wasn't cheese. So I cut the rest of the ravioli in half and lo and behold, about three to four of them were meat ravioli mixed in with the cheese. I'm a vegetarian. I haven't eaten meat for close to a decade and currently I'm very sick because of it. There are also people who have meat allergies or who abstain from meat for religious or cultural reasons. I will say that our waitress was very gracious and apologized and that we didn't get charged for my meal. However, I have literally never had this happen in the time that I've been a vegetarian. This speaks to a huge issue with cross contamination and a lack of oversight in the kitchen. At best, they were careless and opened two packs of ravioli to boil while not bothering to check what kind they were. At worst, there could be dozens of other problems in the kitchen. I feel genuinely disappointed as the Ivanhoe was one of my favorite restaurants before the closure. All in all, the quality went way down and as someone who has worked in food service I'm still genuinely baffled at how such a huge mistake happened. read more

Excellent place for dinner, or just for a "wine down" with live music. And Ferndale is worth the drive. We live on the Central Coast and visited Ferndale for only one night as Memorial Day weekend was closing down... We actually stayed in the Victorian Inn across the street, which was a great place to spend the night. By the time I'm posting this, our hosts in that hotel have probably gotten their ABC license and opened their restaurant, which would be worth checking out. read more

Skimpy Shrimpy: My wife and I checked out this place after the recommendation of an Airbnb operator. My wife ordered the Venetian Shrimp dish which delivered only 3 shrimp (the menu touted 5) so I kindly made the waitress aware who initially confirmed 3 was standard. I believe she realized this error and kindly brought her a skewer of shrimp prepared very well as recompense. The atmosphere matched the towns culture and history and preserved architecture from early California with quite a history to the building. The food was overpriced for what you get. Came here on a slow Sunday evening with my partner. We waited at the host stand for over five minutes without being acknowledged once by the bartender or the servers. One of the servers and bartender each saw us standing there. Not once did anyone say, "Hi, someone will be with you shortly." We eventually walked out. This was the first time in 30 years I actually picked up a salt shaker because nothing was seasoned, and it was completely bland. Went to the Ivanhoe restaurant on Thursday Aug 7th with 3 friends. All four of us were disappointed. I ordered chicken piccata. What I received was a baked chicken breast. It was not pounded or slightly breaded, there was no flavor in the butter/wine sauce other than butter, no flavor from the capers. The baked chicken breast was cooked perfectly, but I didn't order a baked chicken breast. The penne pasta was about a half serving. My sister had the venetian shrimp w/goat cheese polenta. The portion of polenta was less than half of what you would expect. What is cheaper than cornmeal? Our friend ordered cheese ravioli but received a meat filling and was comp'd. Our 4th friend ordered the calamari steak. I've never seen anything that looked like what she was served. The drinks were good. The salad and ministrone soup was delicious. The garlic bread was underseasoned and not really toasted, but was garlicky, which we liked. One outstanding comment is for our waitress. She saved the day. What an asset. She was wonderful. Quirky handsome hotel with only four rooms (we were in the Roberts room) with a balcony and street view. Unfortunately the hotel is on a turn in the road which facilitates rumbling trucks and motorcycle show offs. Ferndale is not as peaceful as you might think, even in the off season. Also, our balcony featured an ashtray with cigarette butts, kind of gross. But the complaints stop there...the room is lovely. And decorated with antiques. The bed squeaked, the claw bath tub is not my thing..but. There is wifi and cable, great coffee, beautiful decorating...warm and cozy. It's very casual...and there is. A nifty little library/ sitting area with board gems, books, etc.... Delightful experience to be sure! read more

HOTEL: We had stayed at the Hendeson Kausen Room $100.00 09/05/10. I was impressed by the size and quality. No museum smell. I believe the hotel was renovated 2001, pretty new. And the Old Western feel to it. A couple of biscotti and little bottles of water in the room was thoughtful. Only negative was that the fan from the downstairs kitchen was loud. Since everything else is quiet, it souded louder. The sound did not go all night, so we had a good sleep after all. RESTAURANT: With the quality for the price, it is a great deal! The place was packed. Calamari was my favorite, pesto ravioli was good too. $52.00 dinner for two with drink, not bad at all. We will be back. read more

Stayed 1 night in the Brice Room, the room was comfortable enough but we could have used a luggage rack in the room, alas the floor had to do. Bed was comfortable, but the room was a little noisy from the street noise and patrons leaving the bar/restaurant. In the restaurant that night we had an enjoyable meal, food was very good and fairly good service. Wife had the Ceasar salad and grilled prawns, salad was fresh but on the small side, probably should have ordered the large size, our fault. Prawns were tasty. I had the Chicken Marsala, it came with 2 large breasts and lots of mushroom sauce. The baked potato was very good and fluffy. I could not finish this large dinner and therefor had no room for dessert. Our fault also... :( We will definitely come back again for both the room and the food. read more

I'm guessing that everyone who has written a good review did not stay in the room above the kitchen with the windows facing the alley AND the restaurant/bar fans @ the window (very loud)! The room compared to the other rooms is not nearly as nice as the others. Personally, I would have tried to maybe over compensate for the bad smell, loud fan, alley view,dark dark room and made the room feel even more cozy than the others. My boyfriend made the reservations with the owner who told him there were two rooms left. He told her he was bringing his girlfriend up and asked, what she felt was the better of the two rooms. After we checked in I peeked in some of the other rooms as the doors were open and they were vacant. They were nicer than ours. At check in she told us they serve dinner but not breakfast. Again, if you like to drink and the smell of a bar/restaurant then this is the place for you. But if you want a cute bed and breakfast then there are other choices in the same price range in Ferndale and downtown. The first night, I believe all the rooms were booked. However, the next night they were not, and my boyfriend was very upset when he saw the other rooms. As he had asked, the owner, for a nice room. She could have offered us to move the next night. The fans were so loud! When we asked about them and she told us they would turn off at 10pm. That was not true on the 2nd night it was 10:30ish. We came to enjoy the Redwoods and hike so going to bed early WAS the plan.The locals, definitely hang out there at the bar. Again, great if you want the bar scene, but it got very loud and we were trying to sleep. We came for the Redwoods and tranquility. The restaurant was not good and way over priced. It has carpeting I think hasn't been replaced since the place was built (lol). I do not see too many restaurants with carpeting anymore. So the smell was not pleasant. We ordered chicken picatta and a seafood pasta. The chicken was a huge boneless breast, dry and too much sauce. It was not butterflied or thinned out what so ever. The pasta had too much sauce, as well. The salad was the only thing I ate. The bread they serve is wonder bread-like baguette. The prices do not match the quality. I will say the servers were nice and attentive. But that cannot make up for bad food and smell. We did have good food in town. In summary, this is not a cozy romantic get away. We had a pretty bad experience both in the lodging and food of this establishment. However, there are many in the area. read more
