Traveling from Oregon to Richland Washington we pulled in to purchase a Kuat double bike rack. At…read morethe register we found out that Washington state no longer removes the sales tax for out of state customers so we'd be hit with an additional $65.00 charge on our $749.00 bike rack. When I asked about the tax I was told I could go online and request a refund later. I did that this morning, 3 days later and found out the state of Washington won't accept refund requests until the following year. Pretty frustrating. The $65.00 isn't the end of the world and the sales staff was very nice. It just seems like a good business practice to advise your out of state customers of the implications of their purchase rather than give them just enough information to get the sale and let them figure it out when they get home.

I need vitamin D3, says me. Back to The Hat. I had a couple of requirements for The Hat. It had to be a lighter color like tan, be packable, have a drawstring so that it didn't end up in the ocean, guarantee 50 SPF protection (in case my dermatologist is reading this), and be somewhat stylish (like that is possible), plus I didn't want to mortgage the house or sell a kidney. First stop on my shopping trip for The Hat: REI. Before I could even find the hat section though, I was sidetracked by the winter sale--mittens, scarves, hats, coats. I like to do my Christmas shopping early. Name brand stuff like North Face at low prices. Handed off those items to the hubby who was busy eyeing the snowshoes (maybe he is taking up a new hobby) and continued my quest for The Hat. I knew this place would have some great choices (I checked their online selection), brands like Columbia, Outdoor Research, and REI, of course. I found one full aisle (both sides) and a sale rack on the adjacent aisle full of potentials. I eventually chose one after some consultation with the hubby. It came from the sale rack, too! While purchasing the winter gear and The Hat, the clerk asked if we had a membership or if any member of the family had one. Sure, let's try a family member's name. Bingo. The clerk explained that attaching my purchase to a membership allows me to bring the items back within one year of purchase if not completely satisfied. There are other benefits (check the REI site for information).

They also carry lots of other equipment for salesman or rental. I rented a cruiser bike and spent a delightful hour riding on the riverfront trail. The bike was awesome! And at 10 bucks an hour it was the best money I've spent in days. The sales people were knowledgeable friendly and helpful. If I could give them six stars I would!

Nestled within the elbow of the mighty Columbia as it makes its last dash Pacific-ward are the…read moreFinley Hills Trails. This area is known as the Wallula Gap & you are gifted with views of this natural wonder....after you ride through some sandy, desolate, and sweat-inducing trails (that can sometimes have a rattler or few). So, I have looked at this area from afar (by car when heading down to Walla Walla, or by train window when going to Portland), and have always loved the terrain. Here, the Columbia cuts through what must have once day been a mountain, and now we're left with a mini-canyon with high walls. I always assumed the views from atop these walls must be awesome, and they are. Getting here is a short jaunt from the Tri-Cities, and yes, you do drive through Finley (it's not that scary, actually). Most of the drive is paved save for the last mile. There's an area to park your car (it isn't marked, but the Yelp Map should give ya a good idea). Once parked, cross the road you were just on and make your way through the gate/fence. Then you're in. There's the main road/trail here. I heard there is atleast one single track you can also take here if you take an immediate left, but it wasn't illuminated to me (grasses overtook it methinks). At any rate, just follow the road. The riding is decent, but it does get sandy in parts. If it's windy (which is frequently on the menu at the Wallula Gap), you will wish you had a mask like Darth Vader. I rode a few miles and saw no other bikers, but did see people on horseback. I was frequently on the lookout for rattlesnakes. It was a hot day, and my friend mentioned they also like this area (I never came across a single one). After a tough arduous workout, I spied some sort of Tower (probably cellular) and made my way toward it. Here is reward for all the pain and suffering. This is a perch with the views to make memories. Here you can see Mr. Columbia's elbow. You're going to be high up along cliff's so don't be too daring. It's a bit rocky here, too, so mind your knees and don't do the falling thing. This is what made it all worth it. Great views, great views, great views. Next time, I'd probably try this during a less windy and earlier in the season (to avoid the dryness factor). But all in all, a new local biking option has been found.

Ummm...are you still with me? Yeah. Being a Star Wars nerd does something to one's social life. If you're still with me, then you might get an idea of riding single track on your mountain bike. Instead of beaming past redwoods, here you blast past large sage brush. I'm a novice to single track. I mainly ride fire roads and gravel roads. They're easy, and offer lots of space---not very technical. Single track on the other hand is a whole other beast. A beast catered to those masters of the fat tire. State Patrol is the Tri-City's offering of single track. I was skeptical. There are no hills here. It's a sandy desert. What kind of trails would they have here?? I was hesitant indeed. Last week, I finally made my way to State Patrol, and I am impressed. To get here, head for the actual State Patrol, and right there you will see a tiny road with a "Dead End" sign. That's where you can park and access the trails. I ended up jumping onto the trails directly to the right. They went slightly uphill. I wanted to get acquainted to the area, by riding the border of the trail area, and then delve into the more meaty trails. After riding by the State Patrol and Vehicle Inspection facilities, the "border trail" passes sort of near the I-82, and then away from the highway and along some farm fields. I passed several trails going the other way (and most likely down hill). Some trails were labeled. The first real trail I hit was "Baja". Oh snap! The twists and turns. Gravity (yes, gravity was invited to the party) pulled me down the switch backs and jumps. There were a couple of times when I just about ate it. I had a smile on. Now many of these trails are handmade. There are jumps dug into the trails if you want to try 'em---they looked too burly for my fraidy cat 'self--someday perhaps. Be aware that single tracks are narrow trails. I scraped my pedals on the ground many a time. Space is tight, and fun. And yes, there are hills. Once you make it to the bottom of the little canyon, you have to turnaround and go uphill. I actually had to dismount and walk my bike on one of these uphill trails. I don't know what this place will be like in hotter months, but with the cooler weather, this place was fine. I have heard rumors of rattlesnakes, so I was a bit wary and alert for them, but I didn't find any. I did see a little trash and broken beer bottles (rednecks always have to leave their mark). At the bottom of the canyon there is also.....a dam! Who woulda thunk there's a dam in the Tri-Cities!? A fun afternoon was had (check out the cool photos). Spent about 90min riding the trails and getting a great workout. I never did come across an Ewok though.

I really love this bike park!! I typically ride here, Galbraith and occasionally Beazley and will…read morehonestly say that I enjoy this park the most of the three. The tracks are super flowy and have the right amount of uphill mixed in the downs to keep things challenging and fast. I think the reason I like it better than others is because its not just one big uphill climb, followed by one steep fast downhill. I rarely feel to beat up from the climb to properly ride the downs. I am a weekend rider and don't see myself getting sick of this hill any time soon. If I rode everyday I could see myself longing for a Galbraith type park because State Patrols not technical and there is not a whole lot of variety or obstacles (almost no rocks/roots). My favorite runs are X-cut and Freeway and Woods. Fred and Johns are where to look for jumps and drops. I would advise to inspect any drop/jump before you try them as I have noticed many of the jumps here have uphill landings or jumps that need landing repair. The jumps seems to be kept up the best on Fred and Johns and I always see people there working on them.
