About 6 mos ago,I came in for a cleaning and check up, which was fine. A week later I developed severe pain in a back molar that already had a root canal. Dr. Helen Sergerie diagnosed an infection and prescribed an antibiotic and told me the only tx was to pull the tooth. I asked her multiple times, isn't there any way to save the tooth? No, she said , it must be pulled and sent me to an oral surgeon. I was told the surgery involved IVs, implants, tooth replacements and 6 mos before I would be finished. I went home to consider and took the antibiotics for 4 days and when I was still having pain, I called Dr. Helen Sergerie to ask if another antibiotic would be more effective. She said, Sorry, there's nothing more I can do. Wow, never got that from a Dr before! I finished taking the antibiotics and every day used alot of Listerine and the infection with its pain went away. I wasn't sure about all that other tx so waited to see how the tooth did. 6 mos later, no problems but I needed another teeth cleaning so stupid me, went back to Sagewood. Yup. Got another infection with that same tooth. Well I couldn't believe that my tooth couldn't be saved so I went to my previous dentist at Sterling Ridge Dental. One look and Dr Cope said, absolutely, that tooth can be saved! He sent me to Advanced Clinical Endodontics, (ACE) and sure enough they performed a re-root canal and prescribed strong antibiotics and finally cleared up the infection and fixed the problem with the tooth. One day! Not 6 mos! Stay away from the revenue focused, Dr. Helen Sergerie.

They are both very meticulous in everything they do. However, their billing department is less than ethical. Do not ever take their word for what you may owe after insurance is applied, even if they say that they ran it before your visit and are sure that the amount you are paying will cover the bill. Before my child's appointment, I had them run not one, but two, insurance coverages, so that on the appointment day I would have a true balance. The office personnel who handled this for me told me I was probably over-paying a bit for these services, but I went ahead and paid them close to $2,000 (after all, they told me that they had run both insurances, and this would be close to the amount that would be owed). Six months later, I get a bill for almost $350. At first, I thought this was just a mistake or some lag in either insurance payment or accounting. I know this can happen. For months a notice simply showed up through text message- no call, no explanation for the payment request, nothing to explain what had happened after such a long lag. Of course, I would not have normally expected a personalized call over invoicing but given the lengths I went to (since it was such an expensive visit) in order to ensure it was budgeted for, this bothered me. Finally, I picked up the phone and called them. They said they would look into it and call me back. No return call. The month passed and so I believed it had been resolved through insurance- a mistake, but, again, a text message for an unpaid invoice arrived. I immediately called the office to find out what had happened. The office person put me on hold and then returned to tell me that one of the insurances did not pay and I owed the invoiced amount. This being in direct contradiction to what the girl had told me when she originally reached out to both insurances to verify payment before services were even rendered. Sagewood Dental did not lose my business because of skill, but because of unethical business practices. I will not use any company that lies to me in order to perform services and then comes back six months later, plus, to collect more money- especially when the customer service and explanation have been handled so unprofessionally.

(note, I am extremely scared of dentists due to improper care in the past) NOTE: I paid $10.000 for the horrible service that I am trying to be brief about on here. $5.000 for my permanent retainers. He came up with a plan that my crowns needed to be replaced. I had permanent retainers placed by my Orthodontist years ago to keep my lower front teeth in place, and I paid $5,000 for those. He took it upon himself to remove my permanent retainers, told me that my teeth would not move, I am 57, of course, they will move. He half extracted one of my lower front teeth in the process, very painful. I cannot bite into anything; my lifestyle/food habits have changed due to the half extraction/cannot bite into any foods. I kept going back and forth throughout that time while he tried to come up with a plan for my 4 front teeth. He said for me to come into his office on 6/2/2025, which I did to discuss the bridge he said was the only plan he had that could fix what he messed up. We have been on the phone multiple times trying to come up with a solution for the mess he created with my 4 lower front teeth. On 6/2/2025, he dismissed me and said I was not his patient anymore, and said he was sorry for the mess he created. He had planned the dismissal and did not want me in his office anymore. He took my 10.000 andmade my teeth worse. He said I am not to come into his office anymore. Got a call from his office manager on 6/5/2025, stating I will not get a refund/no work to be done to fix my teeth/not to call or come into the office again... I am at a loss as to what my next move is because Dr. Stephens is the person who created the mess with my teeth, took my permanent retainers out without my permission, took my money, and refused to fix my teeth or see me again due to me being 'unhappy,' he stated... Dr. Stephens has his eyes set on money/financial gains, not on helping patients. Steals your money and does not treat the patient/me and then discards his patients after taking their finances...

Know your dental benefits and verify your treatment estimate yourself…read more I'm writing this because I hope our experience encourages other patients to become informed consumers of their own dental care. Treatment plans are estimates, but before agreeing to thousands of dollars in dental work, review the charges and independently verify anything that doesn't make sense with your insurance company. I'm very glad I did. My husband received a treatment plan at Sterling Ridge Dental involving multiple crowns. Our Delta Dental PPO covers crowns at 60% in-network, yet one crown was estimated at approximately 45%. When I questioned this with the office coordinator/manager, Theresa, I was told perhaps our benefits had decreased and was advised to contact Delta myself. I did. Delta confirmed our crown benefit was still 60%, consistent with estimates we had received from other in-network providers. Unfortunately, my conversations with Theresa became increasingly uncomfortable. I found her demeanor dismissive, passive-aggressive and at times hostile simply because I continued questioning discrepancies in the treatment estimate. At one point, she suggested another provider may have obtained a different result by coding a different tooth and said their office would not "unethically" code the wrong tooth to obtain coverage. That was never what I requested. I simply wanted to understand why their estimate didn't reflect the benefit Delta confirmed. I also questioned separate D0350 photographic image charges for the crowns. Theresa told me these photographs were needed as documentation/proof so the practice could get paid by insurance. I specifically verified this with Delta. The representative told me D0350 photographs are NOT required for crown reimbursement and that standard dental radiographs, including periapical (PA) x-rays, can be used when additional documentation is necessary. PA x-rays are covered under our plan. I understand an office can choose its own documentation practices. My concern was being charged separately for something presented as necessary for insurance reimbursement when Delta told me that specific photographic code was not required. This was especially confusing because during our consultation, the dental assistant took intraoral photographs and specifically told us they were for internal office use and were not something we would be charged for. When I continued questioning these issues, Theresa became more confrontational and told me, word-for-word, "We're not going to let any insurance company dictate how we run our business." She also told me I was "lucky that we accept your dental benefits." I wasn't asking insurance to dictate how they practice dentistry or asking anyone to improperly code anything. I was asking reasonable questions about our coverage and financial responsibility before committing to substantial dental work. Theresa ultimately proposed obtaining a formal predetermination from Delta. She also attempted a three-way call with Delta, but I was disconnected/hung up on and she never called me back. Within approximately the same week or the following week, I received the predetermination we had been waiting for, yet I still received no follow-up from Theresa. Ultimately, this wasn't about one relatively small fee. It was about transparency, professionalism and how legitimate patient questions were handled. We intended to establish long-term care here. My husband had substantial dental work to complete, I had scheduled my own new-patient appointment, and we potentially would have referred others. Instead, we canceled his treatment and future appointments, canceled my appointment and chose to seek care elsewhere. My advice: KNOW YOUR BENEFITS. Request an itemized treatment plan, review the charges and call your insurance company when something doesn't make sense. No patient should feel intimidated, pressured or "lucky" that their insurance is accepted simply because they ask questions. Being an informed patient is not being a difficult patient.
