Relieved that there were others there who shared my lack of experience, Mike presumed to get the group in gear/paddle-mode - & gave us a brief rundown of paddle techniques, safe-kayaking around other boats, what to do when faced with a wake, how to utilize the kayak & paddle for maximum control & leverage, capsizing protocol, etc. Not only was his introduction animated & enthusiastic, he made everyone feel comfortable & welcome throughout our trip. We paddled to Paddy McGee's (a waterside restaurant in Island Park), & had a wonderful lunch - along with a much-deserved drink - which made the short paddle back to the Long Beach Boat Ramp/Marina a breeze! Gabriel and the other lady, whose name I unfortunately forgot, were so friendly and informative. These people are kayak enthusiasts, not true salesmen. Yes, they run and operate a kayak shop, but they're kayakers themselves and they love talking boats, gear, gear and experiences. I'm newer to kayaking, but I'm learning fast. I'm absolutely going to take lessons here at Empire and really enjoyed speaking to Gabriel. Again, she's extremely friendly, but she knows her stuff, and is full of knowledge waiting to be shared. I told her she was like the North Star guiding me through uncharted waters. If you want to learn about kayaks/kayaking/kayak gear, stop by this shop. I really think you'll be happy you did. They knew so much about the Adirondacks and local rivers, but even more, they also travel to Southern rivers. It's great to see a group that really bonds with each other. I was tired of groups where people just wanted to paddle and go home. Here, day trips always have a Happy Hour tailgate party where folks share snacks and stories. I've heard the camping trips are fantastic. I was afraid to sign up when my skills were new, but the instructional weekend keeps giving...people keep coaching and helping. Or, you can also be in a tandem canoe with an expert. That's how I broke into moving and whitewater adventures. Best sport I ever did...and I"ve done a lot...because this group is so professional and warm.
