Walking into Michael's behind my craft-seeking girlfriend is like walking into a strange city at night and not having any frame of reference other than being able to recognize that the writing on the signs is in a language you recognize. There is an overwhelming jungle of sparkle and color, plastic and paper, metal and fiber. Machines whose function one couldn't even begin to imagine their function and occasionally, one of two that are recognizable. This is craft heaven, or so I'm told. I hadn't been to this store in a few years, and visited a few weeks ago. It was shocking how empty the shelves were and how many items were locked up. It used to be a fun place to browse, and they had display artist pens that you could write on paper to test, which was one reason why I went there. I'm sure they've had shoplifting problems like most other Portland stores, but having no product on the shelves means you can't sell anything. There were just a handful of store employees and a few customers the entire time I was there. It felt like this store won't be open much longer. It was a sad, depressing experience, and I won't be back. I walked out without buying a single thing on my list. You may as well shop online and save yourself the trip. I purchased a very expensive Cricut machine. As soon as I got home, I realized the mistake. I immediately went back to the replace it with the one I need. They refused to replace is because I simply opened the box. Did not use it and it is still brand new, purchased one hour prior to trying to replace it. Unrelievable. Yup, I'm a regular here--and I'm not very crafty, but their silk flowers really work on the decks of my house. The pride section was great this year ( growing every year). Other holiday fare is great, too. I could find two people working in the entire store on Monday, December 16. One woman, Brandi, claimed she was the manager, was working on a craft project for a customer. I asked her if she could direct me to cookie storage tins. She said, "Can't you see I am working with someone!" I then said, "Can you point me in the right direction?" She then told me I could look at the location on line. I returned when she was done with her project. Again she pointed to the other end of the store. I said, "Can you just tell me the isle number?" She refused. I then looked to her right and what I was looking for was right next to her! I raised my voice and said, "They are right next to you." There was a whole case of them! We were shopping at the store and asked to use the restroom (kinda urgent) - they had codes for the doors, we kindly asked and she annoyingly answered they're not in use. Next thing you know some gentleman asks a different employee here to use the restroom and she walks him right down and gets the code for him to go use it! What is this?? read more

Today (8/22/24), I visited the Michaels store at Glenn Widing Dr in Portland (store #9967) and was shocked when the store manager, Christina Cartwright, threatened me. I arrived with four $100 gift cards I received from work, intending to surprise my wife with a new Cricut machine. When I approached the register, the cashier called for a manager--first for a price match, then due to issues with my gift cards. Initially, Christina was helpful, working hard to process the cards. After about 20 minutes, she processed the first of four. However, the register froze, prompting her to restart the machine and warn it could take five to ten minutes to reboot. During this time, we chatted, and the original cashier assisted other customers at the self-checkout. Once the register was back online, Christina found she couldn't process the first gift card again but managed the other three. I tried to lighten the mood by joking, "They sure don't make taking a gift card easy on you guys. I appreciate the help." About 45 minutes in, Christina informed me that the remaining gift card (the one that had processed before) showed insufficient funds and that I would need to cover that amount. I asked her to clarify since we had both seen it process. She explained that the transaction had been voided, and the funds would return in two to five business days. Uneasy about leaving without documentation, I asked for a receipt or proof of the voided transaction. Christina told me she couldn't provide one because the register had been reset and instructed me to "just trust her." I asked if there were other ways to resolve the issue, and she suggested I call Michaels' customer service. I then asked if she could call with me, thinking it might help her explain what happened. Her response was, "Sure, it's not like I have anything better to do." I told her that her comment felt passive-aggressive and asked if I had offended her. She denied it but admitted she was frustrated because most customers just accept the situation and leave. I stated I would try calling customer service myself and asked for the number. Her response was, "It seems I just have to pretend that you gave me cash instead of the gift card because clearly, you won't accept any other response." I told her that if that was her justification, it was fine, but shifting the blame to me was unacceptable. We finished the transaction, and she asked for my name. I assumed this was for her records, so I provided my business card. Upon seeing it, she said, "Don't be surprised if you have a complaint against you come tomorrow." I was dumbfounded and asked her to repeat it. She reiterated, "I will be calling and filing a complaint against you with your company." I told her this was far beyond acceptable and questioned how she could threaten a customer's career just because they asked for help. I then asked if the corporate number was on my receipt. Christina replied, "No, but remember, I took care of you today by pretending you gave me cash." I asked for my items behind the counter because I didn't feel comfortable reaching for them. She handed them to me, repeating that she "took care of me." After leaving the store, I called corporate to report Christina's behavior. I also contacted my boss to warn him about a potential complaint and informed my marketing manager of the experience, suggesting Michaels be removed from the list of available rewards. Reflecting on this, I feel disgusted and fearful. What should have been a simple transaction for my wife turned into a nightmare that took over an hour to resolve. Christina's actions revealed a lack of professionalism, and her threats have genuinely shaken me. I entered Michaels excited to surprise my wife but left feeling threatened, disrespected, and questioning how a store could allow such behavior from its management. Maybe it's because this was the closet Michaels to my house and the first that I went to when arriving in Portland 19 years ago, but I love this location! Michaels stores do not have a consistent footprint so knowing the layout of this store and where to find specific items is a huge bonus for me. The store is not huge, but it's always well stocked. Prices are fair, even better when using a coupon and I always use a coupon! If you aren't on their email list to receive sale notifications and coupons, I strongly encourage you to sign up if you frequent Michaels often. For example, when their beads and jewelry making supplies are on sale for 70% off, I make a deliberate visit! I less I need something right away, I wait for the sales to purchase items I need in bulk. Through email, snail mail, and on their website, you can always find coupons for 50% off a regular priced item. Or 25% off entire purchase. So while in the checkout line, go to their site and have coupons ready! For those 55 and over, they offer 10% every single day. Ask for this discount if you qualify! Now to the products: - Beads and jewelry making supplies and findings are in abundance. As I stated, buy when on sale. Lots of beads (not semi-precious stones but sill nice) arranged by color scheme hanging from the wall display draws me in every time! In a separate section they have some semi-precious stone and premade pendants you can easily adopt into a unique design. - Ribbon! So many rolls of French wired ribbon, socially at Christmas time. Silver, gold, red, white fur, shades of blues - it's all there. Designs with Santa, snowflakes, elves, reindeer, stars, swirls - they have it. Ribbon is available in various sizes from 1/4, 1/2, 1, 3, 5 inches. This section is my downfall as I love color and textures. When I moved a few years ago, I gave away boxes of ribbon I had purchased over the years. So now I am very particular and only go near this section when I need something specific because sadly, I have no willpower! As with everything else, don't pay full price. Ribbon is always on sale and the closer to the holiday, prices get drastically reduced. - Baking supplies: flat spatulas for icing cakes, sugars in every color, silicone cupcake holders, baking mats, cake pans and so much more! - Card stock and supplies to make homemade cards spectacular at great prices - Lots and lots of seasonal items to decorate your house - Frames and framing service. Everything you need - Succulents galore! I've made so many gorgeous arrangements with the faux succulents, an easy way to modernize your house. Currently they don't have succulents; they consider them a spring and summer item. Look for them during those seasons! - Flower stems and bushes arranged by color make it so easy to find flowers for your project. Over the years I've bought many of their stems. Trick: when my real orchid loses its blooms, I stick a faux orchid stem in the pot until the real stem blooms again the following year. It's like a toupee for you orchid! Now for the con: since coupons are mailed, emailed, and available online, why not just offer to people! Some cashiers will use a flier to get the barcode and deduct the percentage. Others require you to have it and will wait for you to go to website. Ridiculous. Just give customers the deal! This location has lots of parking. It's only crowded on weekends during holidays so I usually have the store to myself. Staff is fine, they do their best to bust through the lines. Remember, people are buying lots of stuff so it does take time to ring people up. For this reason, I've bought some staple items online with store pickup option. All in all, a great store that has gotten a lot of money from me over the years!!! read more

I paid $400 for the framing and a piece of it had broken and I needed to get it fixed The employee made eye contact with me twice and then when I was trying to leave the store, I was asked if I had purchased anything. every time I go to Michael's, it gets worse and worse, and I understand it's probably not the best job in the world and that you don't get paid that much but showing a little bit of kindness would get kindness back over the course of 11 years have spent over $30,000 getting art framed at Michael's but I'll never go back read more

Disappointing! I had a difficult time finding anyone to help me find items, however the framing department (when there was someone there) was wonderful! Also, I was called and told that my picture frame was ready to be picked up. The girls in the framing department said that although she would not be there, anyone in the store would be able to help me pick it up. That turned out to not be true and was a wasted trip for me. There was no explanation, no apology, just "I can't help you, it's not my department." So I left, to never return again! read more

A few months ago I came into this location to purchase a few items and the cashier tried to charge me 10 cents for a bag saying it was a new law in Oregon. I politely told her the law didn't go into effect until January 1st and she started arguing with me. I told her I had bags in my car and I would go get one. So I had a rough patch in my framing (custom matting) experience BUT ... the many employees at Michaels did a great job trying to resolve and fix the mistake that was just simply an automated glitch and also a simple human mistake for a custom order- but it turned out perfect and worth the wait. Upon arrival Ashley took my order and helped me pick a fantastic mat to compliment my art that was a gift for my BFF. She also upsold me this great glare free glass! The automatic system emailed me stating it was ready. When I showed up it actually wasn't ready, and the crew working in looked and explained it wasn't ready and I was disappointed. It's a gift that has to travel all the way to Hawaii! Regardless, Wade helped me and even gave me a discount for the mixup that was great customer service IMO. I understand stuff happens and that worked. They even offered to have it done in an hour but I came back two days later to pick up instead. Claire helped me at pickup and was nice enough to stop while doing a large order to give me my art. At first I thought maybe it was crooked, but alas its not. Its framed very well and they took extra care to add the metal cord to hang, the artist info as per my request... and even plastic bumpers for when it hangs. At first I was unsure, but as Im staring at this beautiful custom art piece I am thankful for all the efforts by everyone at this Michael's location. I can't wait to ship this to my bff for her birthday! My dad collected art, this was his... and this is now going to hang forever in her home on the big island - where the artist is from... just where my bestie of 20 years now lives! Thank you all. My first time entering this store, not happy with the service. I only came to this location because of it being the nearest one from Vancouver. I had my doubts. I've experienced better service at Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann. I was surprised at the cluttered mess in some areas, I was hoping the products would be organized better, but unfortunately not. True that there is more product than in Vancouver, but not enough to override the service. The associates at this location was rude and seemed as if they did not want to assist me. I tried to let it slide hoping the attitude would change, but unfortunately it did not. It is a bit of a shame to say I will not be returning to this location, even if it tax-free. read more

This is my first visit at this michaels establishment. The one by my home was sold out of a certain collection so I drove to this was specifically because it had what I needed in stock. The online price versus the in store price was different so I asked an associate whether they could price match and she very kindly said yes and would let an associate know up front. Clearly that did not happen because the cashier up front was extremely rude and made it seem as if I was lying about the prices being lower online and did not want to change the price. A manager came and quickly corrected the problem and for that I give 3 stars. Thank you to the kind associates and management. I had NO IDEA this Michaels existed, I came here after dropping my parents off at the airport. First off LET ME SAY HOLY BIG!!! And well also NO TAXES! This is right off airport drive and I recommend using a GPS, or maybe its just me because well I get lost in a paper bag! Lol The staff here I found to be friendly, but scarce! That's ok though! If you are like me when you come to a craft or art supply store YOU DO NOT WANT PEOPLE asking you every five minutes "can I help you find something?" However some people I can image need help finding products for those projects that they just are not sure about. In that case though I would recommend asking a fellow shopper because chances are they know MORE than the actual employee! They are most likely an expert in that area, I paint and also do photography, I was looking to put my photos on canvas. Well the employee who worked there told me to use Modpodge that was specifically for that, NO! NO!!! That would have RUINED my photos and been a waste of money! Luckily for me, someone overheard and told me to use Liquitex or Golden Matte or Gloss gel depending on the outcome I was looking for! Yes Modpodge is cheaper but it leaves a white film over your photos.. I'm certain you wont sell any photos like that, or family and friends may thank you but put them right in the closet afterwards! But thanks to the advice my photos LOOK PHENOMENAL! (Sign up online and Michaels offers 40-70% off coupons so paying $14 turns into $7-$4!) This Michaels has hands down one of the best selections of paints, brushes and canvases I have found. I was also able to find pieces for the fairy gardens I was finishing. One of the things I like about Michaels compared to Craft Warehouse is the different levels of paint supplies they offer, they offer beginning levels up to professional levels in acrylics (I am sure they also do in oils and watercolors but I mainly use acrylics), they also offer a GREAT selection of chalk board paint and outdoor craft paint. Now if you are looking for more professional level canvases they do have some, but Craft warehouse may be your better bet here. BUT both places offer GREAT deals on canvas so you are safe either place. Now for those who like to scrap book OH LOOK NO FURTHR!! Michaels is your place! They offer EVERYTHING! From paper, to stickers to pens and stamps I cant even remember everything they have! They are definitely the place to go for storage for all your craft needs, they absolutely 100% beat our Craft Warehouse in this department! They also have a great selection of frames, I have never used this service but I do know people who have and they say it is wonderful. Again if you sign up for coupons they are ALWAYS offering savings on this. Michaels also offers classes, painting classes, DIY classes, sewing classes, EVERYTHING! I have taken them and some are free! I took the acrylic painting class and it was great! I belive they do have the supplies, but I brought my own (paint brushes and paint) they did have canvas and an easel. I prefer to use my own paintbrushes due to my illness but I did borrow some colors of paint I didnt bring. You want to make sure you sign up early though these fill up FAST! You can find out by signing up on their app (through the Apple App Store or Google play or their mailing list I am sure, or if you go in and ask) One of my favorite things about Michaels is there $1 bins, I have found some REAL treasures there! No JOKE! They have everything from clearance items to seasonal items to hand sanitizer so be sure to stop there on your way out! Now Michaels offers to mail or email you the receipt which I LOVE, who needs extra paper? Also I know I have mentioned this a few times, SIGN UP FOR THOSE COUPONS, when you check out they ALWAYS check to see what other saving they can find (including some discounts they might offer you dont even know about!) I have saved $30-50 off my ENTIRE purchase! YES they DO let you use MORE THAN ONE COUPON! THIS IS CONSISTENT! If you go to a Michaels in Portland like this one RIGHT ACROSS THE RIVER - NO TAX! I visited on a Tuesday morning and got to walk around peacefully without running into anyone -- not a single other customer nor an employee (which wasn't an issue only because I didn't have questions). They seemed stocked up and not quite so busy since they are in the middle of no where but they seems to be a smaller location than most honestly and the employees REALLY know nothing. We go to this location more than the one @ Jantzen Beach, but the closest one from our home was the one on 122nd across from KMart, which had been long gone. If I can't find what I need @ Joan's Fabric or Fabric Depot, I'd find them @ Michael's. If I don't find them @ Michael's, I'd surely find them online, because if the other stores don't have them, and Michael's don't have them, well . . . . you know. But I was lucky, when I DO find what I'm looking for @ Michael's, I just wish the ones I NEED often comes in the quantity of 100. I called manager about a complained, a product I bought from there wasn't as I expected and they were the ONLY store that carries them. They won't give a refund or exchange unless I have a receipt. I told her I got it for Christmas present, but they're the only ones that carry this product. She gave me a direction how to soak my Water Gems - otherwise, if I could go there today and talk to her, she'll see what she can do. Today, I was flipping, it snowed and I really didn't want to go out anywhere. I followed her direction, by soaking them in warm water - and within 2 hours the Water Gems plump up as large as marbles. (Earlier, I was disappointed they didn't grow any larger, I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong, when last year someone gave me a container of Lucky Bamboos and I soak them in water and they plumped up, but this time they didn't.) I was so happy when her suggestion worked. I called her back to thank her, and I was glad I didn't have to go out after all. Their store is also more organized than other craft stores I've been in. Like many dudes, I am occasionally dragged here by a more enthusiastic spouse. Not even smoking a bowl in the car before coming in here can help me groove on this place. At least I know where to go if I need a big styrofoam spherical thingy. So i settled on a circular rack of fabric, climbed in and made it my fort, a refuge, if you well from the suckiness that surrounded me outside the silk and polyester walls. However, nature soon called, and I had to abandon my fort only to find that they did not have a public restroom. The forest of fake tree-sized plants would have to do. However I had barely unfastened my 501s when a crabby old woman employee sternly advised me to go do that somewhere else. Sheesh, I'd be in a bad mood too If I had to spend 8 hours a day in that place. Then I remembered there was a Home Depot next door, which holds my interest slightly longer. Worst experience at Michaels ever. I'd never been to this location but heard it was the biggest store. Drove 40 min to get here about 10:30am on a Thursday. Store was basically empty of customers except me. I worked with three different employees. One who helped me and was wonderful. And then I never saw her again. Then two other gals upfront. The selection is great and if you've got a coupon (and considering they are literally everywhere, there's no reason to pay full price on anything) the prices are decent. However, this location appears to have no employees. I came in for the first time and, being unfamiliar with the layout of the store, wanted to ask someone for help in hopes of it being quicker than me wandering around aimlessly, scouring the shelves. There seemed to be one employee on the floor, and she was already helping someone else. Her multiple requests for someone else to come and assist me went unheeded, and I ended up waiting a good ten minutes until she was done with the other customer and could help me. She apologized profusely and was very helpful, but I wonder why there was literally nobody else who could help me find what I needed in the entire store. read more

The last time I was there, there was a young man with blond hair that actually was very sweet and helpful (hence the 2 stars instead of 1).
