Over two weeks ago, I went to Jefferson Marketplace to pick up some food for Sophia from Firehouse Subs when I decided to stop here for some treats to eat with my meal. Every time I pass by, I see the inside looking really good but never had the time to go inside. This time, I chose to finally step in and see what they had to offer. I have to say the inside is gorgeous. I should've taken pictures to show how everything was organized very well and was clean and neat. On the left side of the counter were various cupcakes and on the right were ice cream flavors. You could spend at least 5 minutes trying to decide what you wanted. But luckily, it didn't take that long. I ended up choosing the peanut butter cup cupcake, which was very good. Not too sweet at all and full of flavor. I even cut half of it with a butter knife so that my hands wouldn't get too messy. And the packaging was really cool. A little spot to catch for some sweets. I was very glad to make a stop when I had the chance. This will be a repeat down the road :) read more

I was in the area for an event and decided to stop in and was not disappointed. The business is very clean and beautifully decorated. There are tables if you decide to eat inside. Had a great walk-in experience at Smallcakes! We walked over after we had dinner and entered into an aesthetic and vibe that was friendly and welcoming. Surprisingly, they had an ice cream selection that was intriguing as well but the wife and me both decided on trying a cupcake. I had the carrot cake one which was pleasantly dense and moist. Love this spot for cupcakes! While they are a bit on the pricy side, they are large and have plenty of cupcakes options to choose from. There is a rewards system as well, which is nice. The icing is thick and very sweet! I usually knock off half and eat the rest. It is perfect for me. I actually like this place so much I had them make my bee themed cake and cupcakes. Small cakes?! Mini cakes ?! Whatever you call them, I'm in! We stopped by here on a whim and have officially found a new "stop by" place whenever we are in the area. We came by about an hour before closing, so they were out of some flavors, but that's okay! They also sell ice cream, which we didn't try. We got a mini cupcake sampler, the normal sized chocolate cream and the normal sized pink frosted chocolate cupcakes.... Just writing this review my mouth is watering! 8/24/20: We showed up about 20 mins before closing. I had a taste for cake & ice cream and remembered this place offered homemade ice cream. I sent my family in to order my Oreo cupcake with vanilla ice cream & it was my first time tasting it. YUM YUM YUMMYYY!! Their ice cream was so delicious & they give such a HUGE helping of it between the halved cupcake. I didn't want to waste it, so I ate as much as I could. Unfortunately for me, I got sick right in their parking lot. OMGGGG! I thought I could handle it. I should have listened to my body. It definitely told me to stop before I got to the middle of the cup of ice cream. You could definitely share that ice cream with 2 others easily. I learned my lesson, that's for sure. Lol. I decided to try something new one evening, so I stopped by SmallCakes. The inside of the shop was cute and clean. Staff seemed pleasant enough, too. Sadly, I feel like SmallCakes is all looks and no substance. I was surprised by how expensive a single cupcake was. I also disappointed by the fact that only very basic, common flavors like vanilla and chocolate were on sale. I decided to try one of their vanilla cupcakes anyway. The cupcake looked tall and lovely with a sweet swirl of frosting. I soon learned it actually was about 50% frosting, the whipped sugar and shortening kind. It tasted like artificial vanilla and a lot of sugar. The cake itself was underwhelming. It reminded me of boxed white cake mix. Ok crumb, not much flavor, pure white color, reasonably moist. It looked pretty but didn't taste like much. I can see why people like this place, but SmallCakes definitely is not for me. I would have greatly preferred a cream bread from Bread Garden. One of those cream stuffed pastries would have had more flavor and probably a whole lot less fat and sugar! Sure, it wouldn't have been as fancy looking, but I prefer flavor over looks. The price is better at Bread Garden, too. I think I will stick with my Bread Garden over SmallCakes for now. read more

First advice? If it's your first try, don't get so many because you don't know if you'll like them. For $3.50 a pop, they're not cheap! We saw that they had ice cream also and tried their Brown Sugar Bourbon with Peach(?) and ended up getting a double scoop. Positives? - The interior and design of the place is absolutely adorable. It is inviting, bright, and colorful. It's very clean and has that sweets/bakery smell we all love so much. - The employers are lovely and helpful. - The ice cream that we did try? DELICIOUS. We loved the creamy consistency and it had just the right amount of sweetness. That ice cream will keep me coming back, for sure. Now the negatives... their cupcakes... aren't really that good. Out of the four that we got we only really enjoyed one cupcake which was the Hot Fudge Sundae. With the rest the cakes they ended up not having enough flavor and the icing sickeningly sweet. Like make your teeth hurt sweet. With the chocolate based cakes you can barely taste the chocolate (except for the Hot Fudge because it had a chocolate sauce Center). Really at a 3.5 for this place. I'm so sad that they opened RIGHT when my sister are moving out of the Radius apartments within walking distance of Smallcakes. Oh well. At least it won't wreck my waistline anymore than Five Guys and Sweet Frog already have. Smallcakes is adorable, very pink, and is what you would imagine a cupcake shop to look like. They have their flavors written on a chalkboard on the side wall and flavors of the day up at the counter. They also serve ice cream and milkshakes. But you can't get a milkshake out of any of the ice creams they are serving, only the one they have listed as flavor of the day which is kind of weird to me, I'm not sure why they couldn't just use the other ice creams to make whatever milkshake. They have a good amount of cupcake flavors. Price is average for a cupcake shop, $3.50. They also sell it by half a dozen and a dozen. My sister and I got half a dozen for about $19. We decided on the almond flavored (Wedding cake), boston creme pie, cookies and cream, peanut butter, lemon, and key lime. The girl behind the counter really wasn't all too friendly nor was she too helpful. We walked back to our apartment and cut into some of them. They are huge! The Boston Cream Pie cupcake was good, I liked the thick chocolate frosting on top and and custard filling was good. The cupcake was moist and delicious. My sister and I tried the lemon one, and it was disappointing. The cake was good too, but it was just a vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing and some lemon filling in the cupcake and in the middle of the icing. Kind of a let down. The almond flavor cupcake was subtle but good overall. It doesn't seem like their cakes have a lot of variety. I wouldn't make a special trip out here by any means. I cannot even explain how horrible my experience has gone with this place. My husband I have been going to this place for a few months and we absolutely love the cupcakes. So I went in to see if they could provide a cake for his birthday. I came in with ideas and was so excited do have a cake done with this place. I showed the employee a few pictures of what I was looking at and was eager to place my order right then and there. Unfortunately I was directed to go online and place my order. So I left and went home and went online to send an email. I uploaded the photo the employee said was good to go and explained I wanted chocolate on top of chocolate (which was a joke because my husband likes chocolate). I was emailed that it couldn't happen and no other means of collaborating or fixing the size or picking a design that worked was offered. So I wasn't upset that it couldn't be done, I stated that in my response, I just needed to see what could be done. Needless to say this place needs to fix their customer service on cake ordering. I met the new owner the day they purchased the store. She and her husband were very kind, and I assured them that they were doing the right thing. I love this store, from the aesthetic to the food, it is well thought out. Fast forward some months and my youngest son is graduating. I called them for a few cupcakes to eat. They graciously took my order and changed the colors to represent his school. The day that I went to pick them up, I was stressed, a lot was going on. The owner was quickly pulled my order, and told me to "Calm down and go, do it!" Super encouraging. They didn't have all their cupcakes displayed when I went in, which is why I'm giving four stars. When I asked what was available they let me know they could ice pretty much anything except maybe 3 flavors. The girl helping me was super quick about getting my order ready! The icing on the cupcakes tastes like traditional birthday cake icing. And the cupcakes are very moist and the whole cupcake is pretty heavy. I recommend using a fork if possible. I had a BIG craving for Smallcakes today and was NOT disappointed (as usual). This tiny cupcake shop is my absolute favorite on the peninsula! I have not once tried a bad tasting cupcake here. My all time favorite is their Lemon Drop cupcake with the lemon drop on top and lemon flavoring in the middle. It's amazing! Today we tried the Birthday Cake and the Vanilla Pink Sugar flavors. The cake was extremely moist and the icing on top was just PERFECT. The price for 2 was around $7.50. Looking back the cupcakes were big enough to split 1 between both of us but I didn't mind the extra ;) The staff is always very friendly and inviting. The shop is small but there's plenty of unique seating options inside and around the area outside. Overall I would rate this place 10/10! The wedding cake (a delicious almond cake) and the strawberry were particularly unique. There is a lot of frosting, but it's easy to only eat as much of it as you want. We BOTH became ill after eating these cupcakes PLUS......the customer service is non-existing. My husband greeted one of the 2 females behind the counter (while the other one was helping another customer) and this female associate said nothing. She awkwardly stared at him and never asked if we needed help. He said loudly to her, "Hello, how are you? .....**awkward silence/stare**** Well, okay then." She awkwardly just continued to stare at us. It was 3 hours before closing so it's not like we came in last minute. The first female finished helping the first client at the counter and as that customer walked away.....we approached the counter and the female walked off towards the back of the store. She ignored us. very odd. She never said, "hello, I'll be right with you" or anything like that. The second female associate walked over to us and just stared again. I honest to god thought she was having a stroke right in front of us. It was awkwardly silent...... I greeted her again, she said nothing. We asked for 2 cupcakes and she rang us up and then we left. She never said, "good bye" or "come again" or anything to us. Just silence. I've never experienced this, ever. This was our very first time here too! We left confused but still excited and eager to try the cupcakes as the presentation is so pretty! We were extremely disappointed in both the cake flavor and cupcake frosting/filling. The cake however, was tender and moist. It crumbled nicely and the presentation/boxing was so cute! that's about where the good stops. The frosting taste like premade frosting from the cake aisle. There's no way it's freshly made and you could tell :( . The cake itself has no flavor. It didn't taste like chocolate or vanilla. Today is the birthday of my 89 year old aunt in Williamsburg. It's always a challenge to come up with an appropriate gift for her, but you can never go wrong with baked goods. Of course, I didn't realize that it was her birthday until last night. And I live in Portland, Maine so it's not as if I can pick something up and drop it off. So I researched my options in Williamsburg and stumbled upon Smallcakes. This morning I called up Smallcakes a little after 10AM and spoke with the owner Sabrina about the possibility of delivering a dozen cupcakes today. Sabrina took down my info and said that her husband would call me back since he deals with deliveries. Not more than 5 minutes passed and Dave called me to set up a delivery. At 1:39PM I received an e-mail from my aunt who thanked me for "the most unbelievable" package of cupcakes that she had received. I can't comment on the cupcakes themselves since I live quite far away from Williamsburg, though I have no doubt they are spectacular based on my aunt's feedback! I *can* comment on the customer service. Sabrina and Dave couldn't have been nicer to deal with. And for that I am very grateful. Next time I'm in Williamsburg I hope to swing by Smallcakes and try the cupcakes for myself! read more
