It is located inside what comes off as an office building. Once inside there the smell of books is in the air. Love that smell! There's a few racks for adult books. There is a great selection of kids books and products. The bathroom is so cute! It's filled with book posters and is very clean. What a stellar bookstore! I have been in my reading era this year and this independent bookstore had a delightful curation of books to help me reach my reading goal. Once inside, we were greeted with a warm atmosphere in a bright, clean space. I loved the handwritten recommendations and notes posted throughout the neatly organized bookshelves. I found them so helpful! They also had nifty treasures and stationery goods that I have yet to see at other bookshops -- definitely something for everyone. I was surprised to find an independent bookstore in the middle of Reston Town Center! It's tucked in the middle of a large building near the ice skating rink/water fountain center. We found the address but didn't see the bookstore immediately. Fortunately, there's a sign for Scrawl Books in the hallway, which helped us easily find the store! The store is small but it's jam packed with books, writing materials, games, puzzles, finger puppets, and other things I'm sure I missed. I appreciated the hand written notes on the bookshelves highlighting certain books, and that the woman behind the desk was able to quickly pull a few construction vehicle books when I asked for ideas for my son. My daughter walked away with an adult coloring book and gel pens to color it in, and my son walked away with some cute ninja erasers. They're still playing with them a day later, so I'd say the bookstore had some good options! My daughter drew until her bedtime and as soon as she woke up, and my son has been running around camouflaging the ninja in various clothes and other items of the same color while stealthily running around. We were here because Scrawl Books was one of the generous supporters of the Fairfax County Library reading program, and I hope the community supports the bookstore as a reciprocal thank you! read more

Saddest moment of the day: attended a morning meeting near Reston Town Center. As I left, I ran across the most darling bookstore: Scrawl Books. Warm wood framing surrounds the inviting entrance, and beautifully enticing books crowding the windows ready to confront any passers by glancing at the store - crowded against the glass clamoring for attention. A lovingly curated collection there for quick and easy window browsing. And inside? Beckoning shelves ... but ... It was Not. Yet. Open. (Wailing crying face) I pressed my face against the glass and juggled the doorknob, to no avail. Alas I was there during off hours. So I will simply need to come back someday soon. read more

Before we moved to Reston, we never noticed this bookstore as we were rarely on that end of Market Street. It was only after we moved here in the fall did we see it. After the holidays, we thought we would check it out---and the Market Street storefront had papered up windows. We wondered if they had gone out of business. Looking around the internet, we saw that they were moving as they put it "around the corner". At the time, they said they would open in January. January turned into February. We looked at their website where they gave their address and said they would open on February 18th. On February 18th, we went to look for it but couldn't find it, then gave up. A little more searching and we figured it out---if you were on Market Street, you needed to enter into a building that had 11911 on it. We were here on a Monday afternoon. As we entered the store, they were still setting up shelves. The 2 women who were working there were very unfriendly. They just stared at us---didn't even smile. My husband said "hello" to one of them, she mumbled "hello" back to him. As we browsed, no one said a word to us. The bookstore is small and has an area carved out as a kids' section. We didn't buy anything as nothing caught our eye. We took a look at Freedom Drive because the previous day I looked and saw nothing to indicate they were there. All they have is a small handwritten sign on the door that exits directly to Freedom Drive. So much there is so wrong. In a time when chain bookstores struggle to retain customers, one would think that an indie bookstore would work double time to let others know they are there. Reston Town Center hasn't had a bookstore in quite a while. First Brentano's went out of business, then Barnes and Noble lost their lease. It's good to see a new bookstore there. They won't last unless they shout it out to the area that they are there. put signs out on Market Street showing where they are. Either get a good, prominent sign for the Freedom Drive side or put a sign on the sidewalk pointing to it. Do some direct marketing to nearby residents in the form of mailing out a card, maybe even offering a coupon. Finally, the staff needs to be more engaging and friendly to customers. Honestly, all those things should have been done quite a while back. They have a small shop at the Wiehle Avenue-Reston East Metro station. Anyone walking to get the train will easily see it. However, given their location in Reston Town Center, many will miss it. We may check them out again sometime in the future to see if they have improved. As my husband pointed out, it is a very small store. Except for the kids' section, there didn't seem to be anyplace to sit down which doesn't encourage staying a while and browsing. read more

I have visited this wonderful bookstore gem in Reston many times. Their bookshelves are literally overflowing with an amazing selection of titles in all genres. Even if they don't have the book you need in the store, they offer free local delivery or affordable shipping to get your book to you. They offer a free and easy loyalty program that rewards you for all of your purchases. The staff are always pleasant and take time to understand your reading tastes and offer great reading suggestions. Most importantly, they have in-person author events with big names in literature, like TJ Klune! Their store is a little hard to find due to construction but they have adequate signs found near North Italia. I'm pleased that they still require masks for all patrons. You always feel safe and welcome at this independent bookstore. read more

Absolutely love this place! I work near here and needed to kill time and what better way to do that than go to a bookstore? Staff are super friendly, I chatted with a young woman in particular and she was able to recommend a book to me. It's a small space but they've really made it functional and utilized what they have. There is a wide array of books to choose from and other fun items like candles and notebooks you can browse. If they don't have a book you want, they will order it for you. I will definitely be here again. This store makes me happy! read more

Nice to look around and browse and to support a small business, but if you need a specific book, you may want to call first since it doesn't have as wide a selection as a major book chain. read more

I had a great experience with Scrawl Books this holiday season! I, like many people, struggled to plan and shop during the pandemic. I purchased a few books online from Scrawl on 12/16/2020, fully expecting the package to be delayed and arrive after Christmas. I got a call a few days later, saying that the store noticed that my delivery address was close by and went out of their way to deliver the package by hand so that it would be there for Christmas morning. Very sweet of them to go out of their way, and unexpected! I can't recommend them enough for their caring customer service. I just went to Scrawl Books for the first time and absolutely adored it. It was such a cozy bookstore, the kind that has all the nooks stacked waist-high with tons of good reads! Everyone was so nice too. They are dog-friendly, which I really appreciated. I love that they have little notecards on the shelves with comments from the employees on particular books/series, and they also highlight local authors too. Highly recommend! Can't speak for the store as I sadly hadn't visited before the pandemic, but their online order pick-up service is quick and easy! The associates vary in level of friendliness but one really hit it out of the park when I called to see if they could leave my order out. Instead, she allowed me to pick up my order after hours while they were preparing to host a virtual event. I hope Scrawl will stick around while the rest of RTC um... regains some stability in its retail tenants. read more

This little independent bookstore is a book-lover's dream! Shelving that doesn't hit the ceiling, so you can see all the titles, but like any true hoarder of books, Scrawl Books doesn't contain it's wares to shelves. They have books stacked in piles on the floor, laid horizontal across the tops of shelving (and even squeezed in in top of regularly lined shelves). The hand-drawn signage adds a touch of whimsy. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, willing to help find (or order) just what you're looking for. They even have a book suggestion jar where you can take a title suggested by another patron or leave a suggestion of your own. I called Scrawl Books today in last-minute need of some books for a Baptism and was pleasantly surprised by how many suggestions Molly was able to offer off the cuff. By the time I got to the store - mind you I hadn't even confirmed I was coming - she had set aside even more books for me despite being busy getting ready for an event. Talk about great customer service! As we went through more options together I realized she was familiar with each and every children's book and able to offer useful feedback on them all. The first time we visited, we really liked this store. Had a great conversation with the salesperson, bought some books. BUT this afternoon, Nov 19, as soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a sullen glare by the heavyset girl with long black hair. When we walked thru the store looking at the merchandise the girl with black hair AND another girl with long brown hair, kept turning to look at us and glare at us . So... What's going on here? ??? One of us asked the woman behind the counter where the restroom was. She said "You're better off using the one across the steeet in the hotel. Ours is a pigstye." So we looked at the restrooms in the store... They WERE Pigstyes with no hot water, almost no soap, no towels... WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON HERE? ? We are NEVER RETURNING TO THIS PLACE! !!! read more
