Screaming Mimi's is a NY icon! The place to come for curated vintage for the "it" girl and all the other creatures of the night! Such a well curated and fun place to be. So when Kitschy Flower announced a vintage doll live sale and holiday event at the shop, I knew I could not miss it. I gathered up some of my most fashionable to attend. We did the RSVP on line. Some last minute guest tagged along and also went to shopping. There was an array of treats and fun beverages. So lovely to see the Mickey (Mickey Boardman) and Baby Lynnie (Lynn Yaeger) did their Friday live show from the event and Cole (Kitschy Flower from Atlanta) popped in showing the doll highlights. Everyone working was insanely stylish and adorable. I could put them in my pocket. The doll fans were also dressed to impressed. I was so happy to feel the holiday energy and the creativity from the event. I knew I had to leave with a new little friend. I snagged an adorable kewpie baby. My friends found vintage clothing and jewelry that they had to take home. Everything was reasonable for what we got. Some items are more expensive since they are more rare. Highly recommend this destination spot for the NY residents but also for the tourist looking for the unique souvenir. read more

On a fun NYE trip to NY we met up with some local friends for dinner (Crispo - really yummy, check it out!). And who knew that upstairs in the same building was a super rad vintage clothing store!? We were so excited to find it that we ended up being late for dinner. Whooops! Great selection of clothes across many decades. Wonderful staff that were happy to talk about styles, trends, materials, designers. I wish we had had more time to try on some clothes, but of course we were late for dinner already and by the time we finished dinner the shop was closed. Screaming Mimi's deserves a zero if that were possible. I had my first, and last visit there last week. A black man comes in and I see them immediately look frightened and then tell he only black employee to go up to them and monitor the CUSTOMER. The black man can obviously see what is happening and unfortunately leaves, while the employee sits there looking uncomfortable with the situation. Since the owner personally expressed her concern to my last review, I thought I'd give Screaming Mimi's another shot....and I'm still not impressed. I am a fan of vintage clothing, more on the hip trends, and although most of the clothes are not my style, they still are vintage to a merit, just overpriced. There are some vintage stores around that sell designer vintage clothes for less so I can't bring myself to find that most of the items are bargains. I know some of the clothes are retrieved from different periods of time, but I still find the pieces exaggerated on the price. I do like the wide array of clothing, they actually have a lot of stuff here. The ladies were very helpful, I give you that, but doesn't mean I should spend more than $100 on a jacket. So, sorry Laura, but maybe someday, when I'm ready to splurge. read more

Incredible selection, one of the cleanest and most organized vintage stops I have been to in the city. This is real vintatge (not thrift!!! when someone does all the work and hunting for you it costs more!), but little to pricey for my standards. However for the quality and selection I was not too surprised. For any one who lives, breathes, and dreams vintage- this is your kind of spot. I had some time to kill after a doctor's appointment and just happened to look up and see this place! The guy that works here with the colorful hair was so lovely. I immediately felt like I could spend the rest of my afternoon going through the entire store! I love how they have the items organized by the time period they're from. I found a great 80s high-waisted denim skirt that I'm in love with. I agree with other reviewers that the clothes are on the pricey end. But what do you expect for a store on 14th Street? People have to pay rent. They lose a star for the young woman that works there that was too aggressively "checking on" me in the fitting room and trying to take the item (I was planning on buying!!!) out of my hands. Not cool. It made me super uncomfortable and feel like she felt I was shoplifting. Whether or not that was the case, I hope they read this and be more sensitive to how customers receive this kind of "service." read more

I ventured from Brooklyn to Chelsea on a weekend to visit Screaming Mimi's to shop for my New Year's Eve outfit and had such a fun time playing dress up in the fitting rooms. The shop is filled with real vintage pieces and for a Prohibition/1920's-themed party, they are very well-stocked. I grabbed a bunch of clothes off the rack and brought them to the dressing room, and thereafter, one of the salespeople brought me lots of things to try on and create the perfect outfit. This spot is definitely worth a visit, but do know before you go that this is in no way "thrift shopping", I paid $150+ for a dress there and they are charging like $35+ for over-the-elbow dress up gloves. Seems reasonable to me for the quality, but do not go here expecting to find one-time-wear dress up clothes like you might at a Ragstock or Salvation Army! read more

Mad expensive! I mean, I know that have some pretty killer vintage pieces, but most of the shirts start at $50, the long dresses ranged from $150 up... even a belt was priced at $30. While one of the girls working there was extremely friendly and helpful, I told her most of these were out of my budget... and she proceeds to show me something priced at $130.... smh..... Lots of well-curated items and I dig that they are sorted by time period... but this isn't a place that's easy on the wallet. It's a neat store, but the owner is INCREDIBLY rude to her patrons, and has no conception of privacy: she is a peeping tom I came to take a look through their costume stock, and found some fairy wings to try on. I went to take a picture in the mirror, and was told that photos weren't allowed. In and of itself, that's fine I guess. What happened next wasn't. At all. I went to go try on the wings with an outfit I had to change into in changing room. I could hear her whispering to her employees, and soon one of them was right outside the curtain trying to converse with me... And then the owner started yelling, "She's taking a picture!! I see her, taking a picture!!!" *blinks* So, first off, I was not taking a picture. I reached into my bag to check the time. But moreover: You're *SPYING* on your customers - nude in the *DRESSING ROOM*??? It's one thing to setup inane rules that are bad for business. Even when I was seventeen, off a plane from North Carolina and utterly clueless, Screaming Mimi's salvaged me with vintage clothes and baubles and made me feel like the 70's incarnate I dreamed of becoming. At a price, that is. This place isn't your hometown Goodwill, far from it. The selection has always been consistently good, if expensive. Their t-shirt section is off the chart unaffordable. $25 for a shirt with "Camp Counselor's Weekend '89" emblazoned across the back? Hell to the no. I recommend this place for one-of-a-kind pieces you don't mind paying for cuz you know you'll be the only girl/boy with it. read more

This store has some awesome selections. I might get spoiled here. Their pieces are a mixture of what's coming off the runway with a twist of street chic and their own personality, which is fun, yet sophisticated. The sales girls here are the most enthusiastic and friendly from any vintage store I've been to. And they're truthful, they don't say "You look great' in every piece, nor do they suck up to you either. Also, they have a million sunglasses. Affordable ones, too. Price-wise, it's a vintage store in NYC. You can't compare it to a thrift store because it's a completely different business. Are you a costume designer? Are you a drag queen? Or are you just stuck in the past? As I was none of these things, I don't really know how I stumbled in here, except I may have been drugged by my friend - a tacky drag queen - who saw an opportunity to dress me in sequins. I briefly remember having a drink with him and then a whirlwind of fake pearls, glitter, and denim flashing before my eyes. No, seriously. Screaming Mimi's is awesome, if you're into that sort of thing. The racks are sorted by time periods - 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s (shudder), and 90s. You can find stuff your mother used to wear (or still wears), with the shoulder pads and all. You can find vintage suspenders, Al Capone-era fedoras, gaudy hats, furry coats, belt bucks, tie clips, checkers, laces, and other unsightly embellishments. It's great. read more

One word - OVERPRICED. Screaming Mimi's is nothing special - just your run of the mill vintage place, but for 2x the price. Selection is alright, not a lot of designer stuff. Stopped in here after hearing about it for years as one of the best resale shops in the city. The staff was really friendly from the moment we walked in the door and the store is well organized, mostly by decade. Nothing in the clothes really caught my eye, but it is certainly a less stressful browsing situation than many other resale shops. Accessories upfront had some real gems, no pun intended. Definitely worth a stop if you're looking for a unique piece or something from a specific period, or just to enjoy fun eye candy. read more

Here is a review from a guys perspective since there aren't many. Screaming Mimi's has a pretty nice sized selection of mens clothes, from shoes to shirts to leather jackets and mens jewelry. Like others have said it is NYC vintage so its definitely more expensive than thrift, but unlike thrift stores you don't have to sort through tons of smelly crap to get to the good stuff. Someone already did that for you! I cant say I am a regular here but nearly every time I have gone Ive come home with a unique treasure. Including an awesome original vintage Metallica master of puppets shirt, and a mind blowing vintage hand painted Megadeth jean jacket(they deserve 5 stars for finding this alone). The staff is always helpful and nice but not over bearing. I hate being asked if I need help every 2 seconds. Plus the fact that this place always seems to be filled with gorgeous girls(staff and shoppers) certainly doesn't hurt. This store definitely isn't just for girls, even if the decor kind of feels that way.. and the prices might be a little high for your average guy(I'm a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to clothes) but it is definitely worth checking out. read more

So I scavanged the website to find out where it was located....I dragged by best friend there and YES there was a ton of items to be found there from vintage designer items : dior, versace, to no name brands which were a great funky mix....but heres the downfall of what i found....It was uber expensive!!! a simple blouse nothing special, not silk was $49..... Has wide range of vintage from classy to funky and flashy in all forms (clothing, accessories, sunglasses) to suit many different ages. Definitely agree with the others that this place is great for finding costume pieces and drag queen garb. Haven't been back in a while but still love the purchases I made a while ago. I'll agree with everyone else and say that the selection Screaming Mimi has is amazing. Shoes, glasses, dresses, you name it. Even tights and cute t-shirts. BUT the price?! A little insane. Granted, if I had a disposable income, I would be shopping here all the time, but I don't. Some of the items are a bit too ugly (like a pair of $50 white sunglasses my friend bought.. agh) but most of the stuff is amazing. The staff is nice, sometimes they make me feel uncomfortable but other than that, I would stop by even if you don't plan on buying anything. I would recommend it to find that special dress (worth it!) rather than for some hardcore thrifting (not worth it!). Prohibitively expensive for everyday slouch wear, Mimi's is a great place to shop for a vintage outfit for a special occasion when you need to impress a lot of people and have about $90 to do so. Oh, and I'm not one of the sex-and-the-city girls who lives and dies for shoes, but the selection of vintage heels at Mimi's is so amazing that it caused even me, a long-time chuck-taylor-clutcher, to stop in my tracks and gape. What a great shop! Nice to find truly, quality vintage clothing! Easy to find what you're looking for and the staff is very helpful. I needed a 70's outfit for a party, and got a great 2 piece bell bottom outfit! I'm petite, and it fit me like it was custom made! My husband found polyester baby blue bell bottoms, how amazing is that! Got the shirt to match and a pair of white leather slip on shoes. AMAZING!!! Prices are what you would expect (Pants, shirt, 2 pair shoes and my 2 piece outfit cost 300.00) and it's all quality clothing, not made in China, and a size Medium is really a MEDIUM, not extra small LOL! the place to be for pop stars, supermodels and heiresses who are slumming it in crap plastic jewelry and polyester. think olsen twins, stumbling out of starbucks on their way to class in black stocking caps. yum yum you can do better, pricewise. goes to show what "vintage" is in nyc. the antidote, if you want vintage in nyc, if you must, is beacon's closet in brooklyn. a third of the price, same crap. or, alternatively, leave nyc altogether - go to new jersey and buy whatever piece of tinsel or 10 yr old synthetic fabric you want for 40 cents... (then attempt to resell piece of tinsel to screaming mimis who will subsequently sell scrap of tinsel/fabric for $150 dollars... maybe you can cut a middleman deal and get $30 for yourself...) and the people who work here glare at me - i don't know if i'm unidentified - being not of the olsen twin set - but i know i have cute clothes, which i didn't buy here, and a cute style which you can't get exclusively here. maybe that's why they glare. read more

Overpriced. I do a lot of vintage shopping, especially online. I'm drawn to vintage fur collars, 50's tweed suits, leather vintage shoes (love me a two-toned Ferragamo), and white lacy blouses. I have multiples in my closet of all of these things and I love them. I know what prices to expect on sites like Ebay, Etsy and my local vintage and consignment stores. Screaming Mimi's had nearly all of the these kinds of items in their store. Unfortunately, even though I enjoyed their very interesting selection, the prices were extremely off-putting. They were about two to three times as expensive as similar items I've bought at other places. In short, this store is extremely well-edited and really great for customers who do not want to, or don't know how to, do their own hunting around. Do your hunting online, however, and you can get the same vintage fur coat or black leather bow shoes for half the price. read more

I can't speak to the customer service or selection because I only looked at a couple of items and the prices were triple or quadruple the amount other places charge so I left. Maybe the customer service and selection makes up for charging triple and quadruple more, but I sincerely doubt it. I was very excited to get to shop here, and I found a gorgeous choker necklace from the 50's that was within my price range. But the first girl I approached treated me like I wasn't good enough to shop in her store, and ESPECIALLY not good enough to see the 2nd floor. Hey, I get it, I'm from the South, and I probably looked a little homeless in my t-shirt and tights, but she also shouldn't judge a book my its cover. I stood at the jewelry counter for several minutes and the girl looked RIGHT AT ME, obviously seeing that I wanted assistance, and she promptly walked the other way. let's cut the boloney with this vintage nonsense. nine out of ten vintage shops in manhattan are simply thrift stores under the guise of resale and consignment, which is about as vintage as an iPhone 3. in brooklyn, ten out of ten. SM is in the one out of the ten bunch. it's legit. clothes are divided by decade with costume pieces set apart in the front by the register. I had a fancy schmancy nye party to attend and this was where the perfect flapper dress was, designed by the same people that brought us the costume design in The Artist. did I buy it? no. it was a surprisingly low $350 but i couldn't justify the purchase for one-time use. unlike the dress, there are many smaller items that are perhaps a tad marked up although not really, and only in the accessories category. I bought long white gloves and a teeny tiny blue slip, the total was just over $80, and neither of these items are vintage or special in any way. read more

Like all vintage, Mimi can be hit-or-miss...but with patience, you can definitely find treasures here at any price. They have used and new stuff (my boyfriend was psyched to buy a pair of Dickies that were practically a myth, they were so hard to find) and a great collection of shoes, boots and bags. Definitely not the place to find cheap vintage items. This thrift shop will rob you blind! They practically sell everything that has been used and abused for retail and above. However, they do have a lot of cool vintage dresses. Just be ready to drop $50+ and fork out more money for the tailor shop to fix the flaws. read more

A hit or miss kind of store. There are amazing things to look at, but as for actually purchasing an item to wear, you've gotta look at EVERYTHING and often come back once or twice a week. I own a few true 50s and 60s era pieces from here and they are some of my most treasured items. The upstairs has some more antique pieces to view.
