My husband and I decided to go to this one of a kind store and we're so happy we did! It's full of costumes, props, make-up/prosthetics, wigs, shoes, accessories, rentals and SO much more! I wanted to go in specifically for makeup, to create a zombie look for my friend. They carry only the best special effects makeup brands at reasonable prices, not like the garbage you find at Spirit Halloween. And the staff was incredibly knowledgeable! I was looking for latex free makeup because my friend is allergic and they went above and beyond to make sure it would be safe for her. I also ended up finding a cape in the cape section which sparked s an idea, so I got a little something for myself there too! Much, much more than a Halloween costume store! This massive store can help outfit you Burning Man as well! While there are definitely costumes for silly/fun things (like, an entire row of Santa costumes in June??! love it!), they have costume pieces that are more for your alter ego; that is, is you're going through a emo/Goth phase, there's stuff here for you; if want to go to festival and dress up for that, they've got some stuff; if you're into LARPing and looking for, say, a Victorian outfit, yep, stuff here for you. I think this is the most fun store I've seen in NYC if you're shopping to dress up for a theme party. Okay, well, except if the theme is just 'white party', which, I just don't see a lot of pure white clothes, lol. In terms of selection, for example, they have an entire wig *section*. There's also costume rentals available for their more elaborate pieces, which gives a lot of variety to play with if you've got the budget. There's an entire counter just for magic tricks. And so on. The staff is nice, attentive, and helpful, but not in that hovering, oppressive way. This has become my favorite costume/Halloween store in the city! The decorations are bigger, better, louder, more elaborate. I love turning my home into a veritable haunted house every year and this place makes me feel both inspired and overwhelmed with ideas. The costumes are high quality, stuff that will last you for many years. I ended up buying what I can only call a steampunk wedding dress from them years ago and it's more well made than the disposable fashion you'd find in H&M. Their top notch costumes are downstairs while the prepackaged costumes are on the ground floor. I really love their period pieces downstairs the most. Victorian, gothic, princess, fairy, pirate, wench - an entire wall of corsets. Every time I come I think to myself that I should just wear these clothes on the regular (costumed brunch anyone?). I've also purchased tails, stockings, gloves. They have a nice selection of wings, and a huge range of masks. And the wigs, my god the wigs. I tried on my first wig here. Then another. Then like 7, and the staff were as giddy as I was. They're convinced I'm going to start my own collection, I'm not quite there yet but I was surprised at how much fun I had playing around with different looks. As amazing as the store is, the staff absolutely make it even better. I felt like I was shopping with old friends, not only was everyone helpful but they seemed genuinely joyful to be working there. There prices are insanely overpriced. You can buy straight from the Manufacturers and save hundreds to thousands of dollar.

The problem is that the picture of the costume showed costume components that were not included in the purchased item.

I had a terrible retail experience here. I went with my girlfriend to buy Masquerade masks for a very important party. The guy behind the glass case with masks was so incredibly passive aggressive and rude, he had a beard and bald head. There were no other customers looking at masks except us. Granted, we were being picky, but all we were asking was to try on masks! His angry facial expression and obviously annoyed body language showed he despised us and thought we were a nuisance. It seemed like we were interrupting something important, though other than servicing us he was just chatting to someone and on his phone, so clearly he didn't have anything much better to do. Are we a burden for wanting you to do your job? Additionally, when we finally chose masks, he rushed to the register to get rid of us. Perhaps the most unfriendly retailer I've ever encountered, this employee created an utterly awful experience and I guarantee I will never come to this store again. Worst shopping experience imaginable. I happened to see a dress that would work for my Halloween costume this year. I decided to purchase it last minute as the website stated there were currently 3 in stock and in-store pickup was available within 8 hours/"up to" 24 hours. The website states clearly that you are NOT to show up until you receive a text that your item is ready for pick up. I never received such a text. When it had officially been over 24 hours I attempted to call the store dozens of times and their PHONE IS SHUT OFF/DOESN'T WORK WHATSOEVER. I never even received an email confirmation for my purchase and yet the charge is still on my credit card. I have submitted a dispute on the charge with my credit card company and look forward to getting my money back and avoiding this place at all costs going forward. read more

Great selection but with a price point to match. Adults have many options of costumes and accessories. From Angels and demons, cartoon heroes, to fairytale legends and many in between. If it is not popular you probably won't find it here. The selection decreases tremendously as you start looking for children costumes. And the smaller they are you are better off looking somewhere else. This store is so huge. I always lose someone when I come in here as we maneuver through the store. There are actually 2 entrances to make it easier to come and go once you make it through the store. Just be sure to come early to have a chance to find what you want before things sell out the week of Halloween. read more

What a cool & quirky costume shop! My friend was seeking a mask for a masquerade the following night so I met her here to find the perfect look. Upon entering, this wasn't your run of the mill costume shop full of racks of clothing, it was a nice mix of Halloween props and even Zoltar dispensing fortunes! I was approached by a nice worker asking if I needed help, then directed to the back to locate my friend on the hunt for the coolest mask. In the back, I also met a sweet tabby cat overseeing the wig section with a flamboyant drag queen! Let me just start out by saying that this review really goes to Jen Hebner and the fantastic design department at Abracadabra NYC. They are freaking AMAZING. If you need any alterations made to your costume or need a custom costume or looking for a rental, I would head straight to the basement floor of Abracadabra NYC. They are affordable, friendly and know what they're doing plus they offer costume services all year long. Carnival anyone? My story? I committed a rookie mistake and had my costume made by a well known online cosplayer on the other side of country. Now this costume was to be made specifically for my body from the top of my neck to the tip of my toe. I gave all of the measurements to her and... well, I think you can see where this is going. Thank GOD I asked for my costume to be completed and sent to me 2 weeks before the date of NY Comic Con. Lo and behold, it did not fit right. As in, it was literally choking me and I couldn't zip it up because there was no stretch in the fabric... at all. Now I don't know about you but a body suit design MUST have give. I almost had a melt down over it thinking there was no way it could be fixed within the next 2 weeks. Luckily fellow Yelper Benson Y. was in the vicinity of Abracadabra when I told him of my plight and he walked straight into this Flatiron store and explained my situation. Once he told me that they encouraged me to bring it in and that it sounds like it is salvageable, my spirits instantly lifted. The very next day I headed over there and for the next hour or so we went over design, alterations and what I wanted for my Viper costume. In the end I was more than confident in her abilities to fix the mess I put myself in. The best part was, I did not find her alterations to be expensive at all! They were completely reasonable and every alteration was listed out for pricing so I knew exactly what I was paying for. In terms of work she tucked a little here, put some spandex panels there, cut this, cut that yet it was still "my" baby if that makes sense. For my final fitting, I was in awe over how amazing it looked on me. The costume fit me perfectly to a T and I finally felt like the comic book villain I aimed to be. I purchased the new Brewing Witch on 10/10/21 via mail. I received it 10/13/21, which is great. Started to put it together and there is no UL Power Adaptor or Bone Necklace. When calling the store on 10/13/21 at 4:22pm EST I was told this is a new product for them and they did not check them as they came in, just shipped them out. Then I was told that before they can send me what I already paid for )$363.92) They were going to look into the other boxes to see if it a reoccurring problem. Great on the last part, but I still need power. I was told I would get a call back from a manager. As of today 10/14/21 1:17pm, no call back, called this morning, they took a message at 10:30am b/c the store opens at 11am, emailed thru the site, no response, sent a chat thru the site, no response, emailed all 4 email address on the site and still waiting for an answer. read more

There's a really cute and friendly store cat named Merlin here! Now that that's out of the way, this is a pretty neat place. There are three floors full of costumes and costume accessories. I was expecting some more extravagant or sophisticated costuming, but a lot of it reminded me of those seasonal Halloween stores. If you DO want more sophisticated theater costuming, there do seem to be decent makeup options. read more

I have visited Abracadabra NYC in the past and they have a fabulous selection. I am writing this review in regards to their wonderful customer service. I needed two Gretel costumes for my daughters (for culture day). Rochelle and a gentleman looked all over the store for it. Rochelle came back on the phone and said they were unable to locate the costumes. However, she offered to check to see if they had anything else that would be suitable, without me asking. I really appreciate that level of service, especially over the phone. I will definitely shop at their store for my future costume purchases. read more

I've passed by this store for years and never thought to check it out. At first I was not enthused by the large selection of cheap Halloween costumes. But I went down to the basement and was SOLD! I love the real costume selection here. Agreeably, some of them were quite pricey. There were some gorgeous brocade Baroque coats that were $450. But there were also a bunch of legit vintage flapper dresses (with hand-sewn beads I assume) between $50-$250. There were ostrich and turkey feather boas that felt amazing (I'm so used to seeing the synthetic stuff that I didn't even think about real feathers). You can rent costumes, but I find the clearance rack to be a great steal. There were also vintage items like fur coats. I'd totally come back here just to vintage shop. read more

Halloween is my favorite time of the year and I love Abracadabra for all that it is and then some more. The place is stocked to the gills with every imaginable costume you can think of. I come here almost every year, looking for inspiration for my Halloween costume and other events. They have 3 levels for all your costume needs. Downstairs, there are accessories and make-up to make you fantastic for Halloween. I was stumbling around a few nights ago in here trying on all sorts of hats! The second floor is where you will find costume kits. Want to be an Indigenous person? Check. Cowboy/cowgirl? Check. 70s hippie? Check. Sexy flight attendant? Check. They have everything here! The basement has costumes you can rent, and well that can get pretty pricey, but if you want to steal the show, they will have a custom costume for you to rent. Just one caveat to this great place, DO NOT COME IN HERE CLOSE TO HALLOWEEN, because you will be in line for hours. Come prepared and get your costume early, seriously. Or else be prepared to get intimate with everyone in line to get their last minute costume and be mentally OK with waiting over 2 hours to pay, that was my experience last year, never again! read more
