My husband is open water certified and I needed to get my certification so that we could go diving together during our Southeast Asia trip. I did some research on both Yelp and general internet and Scuba Fusion seemed to have better reviews at the time. I am so glad that I chose Scuba Fusion because I had an amazing experience getting my certification. EVERYONE at the shop is genuine and share a passion for diving. They honestly want to get more people in the water. Although Scuba Fusion is relatively far from Oakland, I looked forward to each session as well as the open water dives in Monterey. I also chose to buy all of my equipment here at the shop and Nina did not pressure me to buy sleeker diving gear at all. She gave me the once-over for each item and then let me make my own decision about them. In the end, I opted for middle of the road diving gear because I didn't see myself diving a lot in California (it's cold!). I did the open water dives at a different center and they gave me all the paperwork which made it very easy. Scuba Fusion is AWESOME! In May of 2015, I completed my scuba certification through SF and had a great time. The instructors are knowledgeable, experienced, engaging, professional, and fun! Like most scuba certification programs, I completed my certification over two weekends. During the first weekend, I attended a morning indoor class with a small group of people, where we reviewed important information and took quizzes to test our knowledge. If you're lucky, donuts will be provided. :) In the afternoon, we went to the Olympic-sized pool at the College of San Mateo. The pool is beautiful, but it is located at the top of a hill, so it can be really windy and cold! At the pool, we practiced assembling our gear and using the equipment to control our buoyancy. We also learned the different hand signals and emergency protocol to follow in a variety of situations. For the second weekend, we went to Monterey to practice diving in the ocean! The area in which you scuba dive is right by the shore, so you can walk into the water (i.e. not be dropped off on a boat). Unfortunately, the visibility isn't that great and the water is REALLY cold! Thankfully, SF provides you with all of the right equipment to stay as warm as possible. If I remember correctly, you can borrow everything from SF (e.g. fins, wet/dry suits, gloves, booties, scuba tank, regulator, etc.) but you have to provide your own snorkel and mask. Cons: The program was not cheap, but it was definitely comparable to other companies. The program is also a HUGE time commitment (preparation reading, two weekends of full-day activities, traveling to/from Monterey), but, again, this is similar to what you'll find at other companies around the Bay Area. Special thanks to: Nina, for patiently helping me find equipment that fit perfectly; Joe, the class instructor, for being clear and engaging; Daniel, the pool instructor, for holding us to high standards and making us laugh along the way; and Chris, the ocean instructor, for helping us feel incredibly comfortable and safe during our dives in Monterey. I would never recommend Scuba Fusion to any one in the Peninsula area. Please check out Anderson's instead, located in Pacifica. I completed an open referral class and found it to be a complete waste of time. Will, the instructor was late to each and every class. He was selling things to customers while attempting to teach academic lessons that went on and on and on! We had very little pool time and then he did not want to give us the referral because we did not complete one skill, due to his lack of timing and incompetence. Please listen, do not go to this scuba business to gain your certification. You will spend more time in a class room than learning the necessary confined water skills that are needed prior to the open water skills. You will also receive a sales job on equipment from Will. Will was not interested in teaching and appeared unorganized and distracted. He rushed through every skill in the pool and did not care if you understood the skill or not. I believe we were cheated on pool time due to the fee that Scuba Fusion had to pay for the rental of the pool. His modeling and explantation of each skill was very poor - horrible instruction. If you had a question- he simply would ignore you and move on. I cannot say enough about how much I was disappointed in the instruction and the cost of the course. I even bought $300.00 worth of equipment prior to the class from scuba fusion. The mask he sold me initially was not for a beginning diver, because it was tinted and you could not see my eyes underwater. Can you believe that? It is exceptionally important for a dive buddy, instructor and dive master to be able to see your eyes underwater! My boyfriend and I then went to Cozumel, Mexico and became certified by an awesome instructor. There were two of us to one instructor and he took the time to make sure that each and every skill for the open water dive was completed and done safely. Comparing the two experiences is like dog-food to filet mignon, ( prepared perfectly!) I believe the people who have offered positive reviews are not aware of what excellent scuba instruction should be. I am! I completed 18 dives while I was in Cozumel and did beautifully. I did reef dives and wall drift dives and felt completely aware of all my teachings. Please listen, people new to scuba diving, do not take classes at Scuba Fusion! Am an experienced diver, was looking for a specific mask, that they had in stock. Salesperson, who had never met me was intimating off color humor-not terribly cool.-certainly unprofessional. I had traveled from Mountain View, they only had one mask in stock, their floor model, which many people had handled, and then charged me for a brand new mask-not right dude. Then he couldn't even find the proper box-case the mask came in, gave me another from a different mask, same manufacturer. We evaluated multiple options across the peninsula and San Francisco before we chose Scuba Fusion. We even went so far as to take a full orientation and filling out our forms at another location in San Francisco, but, we opted for Scuba Fusion once we saw their flexibility in scheduling, professional staff, and competitive prices (among scuba certifications at least). Danny and Bill keep the classes fun with their jokes, but when it comes to learning, they are very helpful and want to see you succeed. We did the referral program so we did two days of classes with two days of pool diving and were impressed with the amount of exercises we learned in the pool. The pool used is also fantastic - an Olympic pool at College of San Mateo. Most other schools use their own pool or a much smaller pool. All in all, a great experience with a solid staff. I have gone diving several times with Scuba Fusion. Wow what a fun time to learn how to ride a scooter with twin tanks. It was not only my first time riding with an under-water scooter (which was by the way, like having a caddy for your golf clubs), but also my first time diving advanced with two tanks instead of only one. I was impressed with not only the knowledge my instructor had about technical diving, but also impressed with the relaxed and professional confidence he had during the dive. I took my time deciding which shop to get my certification from. I went with Scuba Fusion because it seemed to me to have the best balance of cost and quality. Everyone on Yelp seemed to love these guys--with good reason. From helping me buy my gear, through the pool and the classroom, all the way to Monterey, everyone I met from the shop was very knowledgable, friendly, and fun to be around. They all have a passion for diving, which is so infectious when you're spending the whole weekend with them. I personally didn't have too many issues getting through the program, but there were some in the classes who needed extra attention. Each of the instructors went out of their way to make sure everyone got as much from the program as they could. And when one person struggled with an underwater skill in Monterey, I saw one of the instructors take them separately on a dive to give them as much one-on-one time as they could. They want to see you do well, and they will give you all the opportunities they can to make that happen. Really fantastic dive shop. I highly recommend going with them. I recently took the Open Water certification course with Scuba Fusion - it was a blast! The instructors (Chris, Danny and Bill) were awesome and made the classroom, pool and ocean sessions super fun and full of humor. I would highly recommend Scuba Fusion to anyone looking to get certified. I'm off for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and feel very well prepared. I also got great advice when purchasing equipment at the store - having no prior experience I felt like a fish out of water (haha!) but they showed me what I needed and I think I've got a pretty good set up now. I had gone on a few 'unofficial' dives before deciding to get certified. I couldn't have picked a better place to learn! Rashed, our classroom and pool instructor, was fantastic. There are two ways to learn... - The first is because the book says so - The second is practical tips and a deeper understanding of the very important hows/whys/when. Rashed took the time to teach us with the latter approach. He's got a great sense of humor, went above and beyond to ensure everyone felt comfortable, and certainly reiterated the important rules of diving several times. Moving on to our certification dives in Monterey. Let's be honest - diving in Monterey isn't easy. We had 4.5 feet visibility, currents, and it was miserably cold. I was beyond thankful to have Will and Dan there - pushing us and continuing to test us while providing ample guidance to navigate through the conditions. Overall, I left feeling like I had truly learned. I have gone to several dives since then, and feel like the foundation provided by Scuba Fusion is going to keep me safe while I continue to explore the underwater world. read more

Strange experience, I called and a guy picked up the phone. I started describing my experience of doing pool sessions 1,2,3 during vacation. And not being able to finish due to lack of time (during traveling vacation). At this point, this guy was not able to describe difference between "PADI Scuba diver certification" and "PADI Open water certification", which is clearly described here on PADI's website: https://www.padi.com/padi-courses/scuba-diver/ He suspiciously asked me 4 times, why you were not able finish certification, even after I explained that I was short on time. I had been interested in diving for many years, and I loved snorkeling, so I decided to get my diving certification in April 2015 as the next step. I called around to a few dive shops, and decided to stop by this one. Within a few minutes I was signed up for my certification class! I felt no pressure to buy diving gear, which would have unsettled me. The in-class portion was quick and painless, and helped my understand what to expect. The pool section takes place over two ways in the San Mateo College pool. The instructor (mine was William) was able to take our group of 5 through all the exercises and we felt comfortable in the water and with the gear. The open water part of the class is in Monterey. In April the visibility was really low, meaning it was hard to see far in the water. But my group of six still felt comfortable in the water, with instructor Chris. Unfortunately my regulator failed during one of the exercises and started free flowing, but Chris was there in seconds and he helped fix it. I wasn't alarmed and all in all the situation helped me feel even more comfortable under water. If you live in the Bay Area and are considering diving, I recommend you give these folks a visit. I'll definitely be going back this summer for my Advanced Open Water certification. As a side note, my birthday was incorrect on the Certification Card sent by PADI. Going for a dive this Saturday in Monterey and some buddies recommended the SuBo Titanium "semi-dry" suit in lieu of the usual 14mm stay-puft marshmallow man outfit that one usually rents from the dive shops along breakwater, my man Will showed up earlier than his usual opening time to help me try out the suits (side note: monterey divers: GET THIS SUIT!) after a couple of "frank and bean" moments, we got the perfect one and I ended up buying spring straps and retractors as well! What a COOL guy! Ever since I was 17 and could afford my own car, I became addicted to the ocean. Between Surfing, beach bonfires, fishing, and Scuba Diving, I can not spend more than a few weeks away from the great pacific. I have been diving with S.F. for 3 years now and the community of divers and instructors that frequent Scuba Fusion are world class. I teach diving at Scuba Fusion and highly enjoy every class, challenge, trip and sushi dinner with the rest of the crew here. I've stayed a customer (I have spent more $$ on gear and travel than you ever will) and teacher here because of one reason: Will, the owner, runs a small "mom and pop" shop where in everyone enjoys one another. Diving is a fantastic sport, and although no one speaks to each other underwater, I highly enjoy spending time between dives with the community of repeat customers and volunteers. The Instructional staff does not do this for a living, a very important distinction when choosing a dive shop. Between the patent attorney, salesman, paramedic, and ironworker (myself), we all simply enjoy exposing everyone to the ocean safely and in fun. Diving in Monterey is no cake walk: the water is freezing, you're carrying a lot of weight to balance out the thick wet suit, and the visibility is terrible. But with Scuba Fusion, I felt safe the entire time. They are friendly, knowledge, relaxed, yet vigilant -- the perfect combination for teaching a group of newbies who are liable to panic at any moment. I wasn't expecting to have such a fun time getting scuba certified. For me, it was a means to an end: I really wanted to scuba dive during our family vacation in Kauai. So I signed up for PADI open water certification with Scuba Fusion, which is two full weekends -- one on the Peninsula and another in Monterey. After I signed up for the course, I received a detailed welcome packet detailing everything I needed to know about getting certified. My first step was to come into the shop to pick up my homework packet and buy some gear. They require you to have your own mask, snorkel, fins, and gloves -- an expensive venture, but honestly worth the money. You don't want your mask to not seal when you're 25 feet under water. I never felt pressured to buy the most expensive gear, and they were helpful in deciding between all of the options. The homework took a while (evening homework for about a week), but kind of fun -- PADI does a great job making the content readable and understandable. For the first weekend, you spend the mornings in the classroom reviewing homework and taking quizzes. Nothing too complicated, but you'll definitely want to have the homework done. Then, after a short lunch break, you head on over to College of San Mateo's beautiful pool. At the pool, you review skills so that you'll be confident completing them in Monterey, if you decide to complete your certified dives there. It was pouring rain, but my instructor Joe found ways to lighten the mood. A few days before the Monterey weekend, we received an email that we were going to be in for a bumpy ride, but not bumpy enough to cancel. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous. I even contemplated completing my certification dives in Kauai, but decided against it since I didn't want to take two days from my vacation. Yes, the surf was a bit swelly, but I felt completely at ease in Monterey. My instructor, Chris, was very attentive and his confidence in our abilities was contagious: he made me feel more confident. There were hundreds of divers getting certified at the same site that weekend, so it was a festive atmosphere. The site is also walkable to food, a dive shop (for air refills), and Canary Row. After completing my first dives after certification with another diving company in Kauai, I am now 100% confident that Scuba Fusion was the way to go. My fellow divers couldn't believe that it was my first "certified" dive and solidified that I was well trained by the folks at Scuba Fusion. Needless to say, I'll be back for additional trips and training with Scuba Fusion. I'm officially hooked! read more

I've been diving in NorCal and it's COLD. I decided it was time to move from thick wet suits to more comfortable dry suits, so I took Scuba Fusion's "Dry Suit Sunday" class. The class was awesome. We had a small group (only 4 of us) with William as our instructor. We started out assembling gear and covering the classroom bits, then moved to the pool. The pool session was fun and informative and really prepped us for the Monterey dives the following week. I was so impressed with the dry suits that we used in the class (White's/AquaLung Fusion suits) that I went back and purchased my own Fusion Tec dry suit package. William helped out with getting the order placed and making sure it arrived in time for me to take along on my next dive trip. I did both my Open Water Diver and the Advanced Open Water Diver at Scuba Fusion and have had an amazing time both times. Bill is pretty much the nicest instructor you will ever meet and is very laid back and patient but also has an incredible amount of experience. I didn't know anything about scuba going into the class and didn't feel particularly comfortable with the notion of being under water but after the first Monterey dive I was having the time of my life. I've taken classes with both Justin and Rob as Dive Masters and both are excellent as well - 5 other people from my first class have become regular divers and at least two of us are going full steam ahead on getting our Dive Masters. I just finished my Open Water Certification with Scuba Fusion, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. The first time I visited the shop, I talked to the store's owner, William about the certification course and he was very patient and helpful explaining everything to me. I signed up shortly afterward. The next step was to buy my personal gear and and getting fitted for my wet suit size, and the girl who works at the shop, Nina, was very helpful in getting me through that process. She also explained that I could try out all my gear during the first weekend (in the swimming pool) and I could swap out any gear that wasn't fitting me well. The first weekend of the certification consisted of a weekend with mornings spent in class, and the afternoon in the swimming pool. The in class portion was lead by an instructor named Chris. He did a great job explaining all the important concepts, and overall it didn't feel boring or tedious. As for the swimming pool, it was a lot of fun and was great for getting me comfortable with all my gear in the water. There are a bunch of skills you need to learn and then demonstrate that you can do properly, plus a basic swimming test you need to pass on the 2nd day. The final step of the certification was to do 4 dives over a weekend in Monterey (San Carlos Beach). I was originally scheduled to do this in December, but unfortunately there was a last minute weather change that created unfavorable conditions for beginners. William called off the training, and explained that I could reschedule at no additional cost. Obvious this was just bad luck and not the fault of scuba fusion, and it was a good call to call off the training given the unsafe conditions. My luck was much better on the 2nd attempt, and the conditions ended being great (for the most part). We had a small group of just 3 people, and the instruction was lead by William and another instructor named Danny. Like William, Danny is a very experience instructor, and has the additional trait of being very funny (sometimes). Most the the open water training consisted of re-enforcing the skills learned in the pool and learning how to descend/ascend properly. Some of the skills are definitely more challenging than others (ie mask removal underwater!) but the instructors were great with getting us through them all. Overall it was a blast and we all got certified! Woohoo! I would totally recommend Scuba Fusion to anyone who is interested in learning how to dive! read more

I had a fabulous couple of weekends with James and other Scuba Fusion staff as I became certified last month. There's not much that I can say about my experience that hasn't already been said by others on Yelp... I found the Scuba Fusion staff to be attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful in every way. Though I'm a strong swimmer and am comfortable in the water, I was a little nervous after hearing stories of cold water and poor visibility in Monterey. Upon our first dive there, though, I realized that there was absolutely nothing to be worried about and that I was in great hands with the SF instructors. There was a minor snafu when I discovered that the wetsuit they'd provided for me in Monterey was a size bigger than I needed. However, James and Will were super great about allowing me to rent another one from the shop nearby... they even offered to pay for my rental, which I appreciated. I was also really happy to buy all of my gear from the SF shop in San Mateo. Not only was it helpful that they have a return policy after the pool weekend, I also really appreciated that they didn't try to upsell me on all of the gear I would need. Scuba certification is an investment (not cheap!), so I was really grateful to hear the staff's advice on what they thought was best for me. As a result, I feel like I ended up with just the right set of gear. You just can't find that same kind of honest guidance on Amazon. I wouldnt even dream of giving these guys anything other than 5 stars. We were looking to get into SCUBA and so so happy we went through Scuba Fusion! Will was an amazing instructor as well as one of the most patient people Ive ever met. We referred to him as the zen master the whole certification weekend in Monterey because nothing seemed to bother this man, he's very understanding with beginning divers and always makes sure everyone is comfortable and safe!!! Class: I had the pleasure of taking the open water certification class with William as our instructor. He's a very nice and knowledgable guy. He made my first scuba experience a really welcoming one. From the swimming pool to Monterey Bay, I felt comfortable the whole time thanks to William. I would recommend Scuba Fusion to anyone who is looking to get certified. Store: They don't have a big selection but they do carry quality stuff. I know I'm a new diver but I did my research on the snorkeling gear they carry.
