I recently acquired two awesome, rare sheath knives, and I needed custom length webbing and buckles to secure the sheaths to my leg. I recalled seeing this type of thing at Redwood Trading Post, so I randomly stopped by with my knives. The staff-- without any hesitation-- spent about 20 minutes with me carefully measuring and preparing the webbing, as well as offering me different options that each had benefits and trade offs. It was perfect and also unbelievably cheap for what I got, to the point that I felt guilty spending so little in the store. I've been back several times over the last 30 years including my time in the Scouts and after, and the experience has been consistent that whole time. 10/10, highly recommended. read more

This place is a gold mine for outdoor gear! I came here for Redback boots and found so much more than I was anticipating. Yes, they had the boots I wanted, but they also have really helpful and knowledgeable staff AND all the gear you could want, as well as some harder to find gear! It's clear this place is for nature lovers, and the heart shows. My spouse loved their selection of specific outdoor tools in particular! I felt very well served when i was looking at some boots, and I learned a LOT about what to look for for hiking v running v walking v standing in a shoe, which I never knew about! I will absolutely be back for my future hiking shoes because they have a might selection of quality products that are not available at other outdoor stores that I have seen (Danner, Redback, etc). I didn't expect so much time and attention from the staff, but they were incredible. I will be back and will be recommending it to people! read more

This is probably the most friendliest place to buy work wear clothing, foot wear & camping gear. They take their time and patiently explain products for any choices! Their return policy is also outstanding! There are times that I really don't need to buy anything because I have mountains of gear... but it's just the great quality time spent in this place definitely worth the support to give business! This place is pretty awesome. We came here so my boyfriend can purchase work shoes for his job, and his work place does business with this store. The employees here are friendly; right when you walk in we were greeted with smiles and a 'good morning'. We didn't think that the inside would be huge, but it is! My boyfriend looked around in the work-related gear, which has it's own area of the store, and my daughter and I looked at the outdoor gear. When we checked out the work shoes, the gentleman who helped us out was really nice and helpful; he showed us the variety of work shoes that they had, which ones were steel toe or plain toe, and was really patient with us when it came to us asking if they had specific sizes for specific types of shoes ( and we asked for quite a few ) This was our first time here and it was fun to check out this place :) I hope in the future that we will come again soon! read more

Their prices are way too high, considering there is a Sports Basement, REI, and Any Mountain just a few blocks away with the exact same merchandise. And those stores have better selection, size runs, and frequent sales on top of their lower prices. Plus, their employees just stand around and watch you, instead of engage you or answer questions. I felt like I was being followed as a potential shoplifter when all I was doing was walking around and browsing. Not once did anyone welcome, acknowledge, or help me. Totally negative shopping experience. I will not be back even though I try to support local, independent shops. Not this one! read more

This store has so much selection! I was going to a camping trip and needed a lot of gear. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I just discovered I just discovered this great place. Enough staff to help! The staff was knowledgeable. I bought boots That were perfect for me. Staff was patient. Awesome customer service. The guys in there are always polite, helpful and most importantly funny and friendly!! Today I went in to buy a new sleeping bag for an upcoming trip. I was torn between 2 options and the guy came over and helped me understand the differences! I believe his name was Jim and he was terrific! The one I wanted was of course out of stock and of course my trip is this weekend so didn't wanna wait to order it! The guy offered to either pack up the floor model for me in a box (which I politely declined but was a great option) OR he would give me $10 off the little more expensive one I was looking at which I also liked a lot! He wasn't pushy at all and I really appreciated the random discount and the willingness to accommodate. My boyfriend and I go to this store quite frequently over some of the bigger stores cause like I mentioned , the guys in here are just terrific!! read more

Redwood Trading Post has a special place in my heart! I've been coming here for nearly 30 years! As a child in the Boy Scouts, my Boy Scout leader's son Steve landed a job here, and he still works here!!!! While "other" outdoor stores have seemingly changed to cater to the techie/yuppie crowd, redwood Trading post has remained true to its roots! They provide great outdoor gear, great customer service and Have great employee retention, which also says a lot about their values!!! I love this place!!! read more

Have been shopping here for years. First time at new location. Terrible. No one was willing to assist. Finally someone came out after 10 minutes. I was there to buy an ice chest. Not a big issue. But I shop small businesses for the personal touch. If I want savings. I'll go to Amazon. Probably will never shop here again. I guess after 30 years they lost their business model. I love this place!! This is a great outdoors store that has a lot of things that REI does not. This is a hidden gem. One of those stores the locals know of, and word should get out about. I had my hiking pack stolen out of my car trunk, and have been building a new hike pack. I've gone to the REI near my house and one farther away but couldn't find many things I originally purchased at Redwood trading post (RTP). I also have bought two pairs of hiking boots from REI that I ended up not liking and ran out of options there. I bought a new set of boots from Redwood trading post (RTP) that I really like that REI didn't have. I also got a wool hat that is lined to carry in my hike pack, along with first aid and safety gear that I couldn't find at REI. I filled up a basket with things I wanted, then made pile on the counter and the price was so much lower than I expected. RTP has a lot of different brands so I was able to purchase some cheaper options at times, but has good brands so I could chose more expensive options. Like for a new compass I had options ranging from $10 to $150. I bought a water bottle here that's my favorite kind/size that I can't get at any REI. RTP has really great clothes here too. I love the wool long underwear I've bought here in the past. It's lasted years and been my "go to" items in the winter, even when I'm not outdoors. (keeps my heat bills low). I first started going to this store in 1980's and it became my favorite store. Yesterday I drove an hour one way just to get to this store to get the things I needed. It was well worth the drive. I'm really happy with the stuff I got, the prices, and the help I got at the store. Jim is really knowledgeable about everything in the store and is patient and kind. He has given me some deals which has increased sales in the store while increasing my wool wardrobe at the same time. It was worth the two hour drive yesterday to get there and back. Went to RTP buy some socks for a pair of boots my GF bought elsewhere. I received expert help from a gentleman I've seen the The Trading Post for many years. Even though I wasn't going to make a big purchase (we already had the boots), he devoted the time needed to verify the socks were the best I could buy to work with these boots. I appreciate REI's and the Sports Basement's large selection, but Redwood Trading Post probably has what you need and certainly has the expertise to ensure you get the best product for your adventure! read more

This is the only place where I do my Christmas shopping. I agree with the review about Redwood Trading Post being a hidden gem that only locals seems to know about. Great products at reasonable prices with friendly, knowledgeable staff that don't hover over you. I am an REI member, and I do shop there about once a year when a need arises, but I've followed Redwood Trading Post from their store on El Camino Real to their current location, probably because of the staff. read more

Honestly, I buy most of my clothes, here! I'm an IT guy so I don't need anything fancy, "Work clothes" work for me and RTP has a good selection. Dickies, Carhart for work stuff, and Columbia, Marmot, Arcteryx, Kelty, Jansport...they've got it. I also always go here for backpacking kit. I might not buy something here, but I will always check to see what they have, and probably 2x out of 3, I happily hand my money to the Trading Post. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, sometimes almost TOO friendly! Boots, tents, packs, stoves...they have a good selection and the prices are very fair. There are a number of comments in this section about the unfriendly Asian woman. I'd like to say that I've interacted with her for years and she's never been rude or impolite to me, at all. Everybody else at the store is great, and most of them have worked at Trading Post for years and years. read more

Finally got the chance to stop by here to pick up some camping gear. I almost bought some cheap tarps on Amazon but I wanted to go to a brick and mortar store and support the local guys. Tarps were actually cheaper here anyway so it worked out. I also found some MRE's to bring on my trip (good thing there is a bathroom where we are camping). This is a cool place with a lot more than I expected. Good boot and hiking gear to choose from. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They even told me which MRE's went straight through them and which ones plugged them up. No lie. Parking and entrance in the back FYI. read more

Not only do they have a ton of camping, hiking, and backpacking gear at this location, they also have a very large selection of work boots and work related clothing here! For those looking for steel toed work boots or waterproof work boots, this is place is your spot. They've got an assortment of styles and brands to choose from, which was hard to find along the peninsula. The people working at the store are very friendly and helpful, and provided great customer service. I will definitely come back here if I ever need any hiking or work supplies. I was in desperate need for a travel pack big enough to accommodate clothes for about 2 weeks. As a first time buyer, I had zero knowledge besides the little things I looked up. I was recommended this store by a good friend of mine, and so I decided to stop by and check it out to see what I'd find. Once I quickly realized I had no clue what I was looking at, I decided to ask for help. Fortunately for me, they had a guy named Jonathan there, who happened to be the guru of travel packs. It was awesome! He knew everything about them. He was extremely helpful, and had so much knowledge, that by the end of my time there, I left the store happy and with a nice travel pack to show for it. I definitely recommend this store. I appreciate Redwood Trading Post so much and am glad they are going strong at their new location. Plenty of parking in the back and it's a no-brainer to swing by on your way to 101 or after your Kaiser appointment, and so forth. Hats are a necessity for me and they have a fantastic selection. I love the clothing lines they carry. They have everything you need! And unlike the chain stores, it's easy to find what you're looking for, try on items or ask questions if needed, purchase your items, and then get right back outside to start enjoying your hiking/camping/yoga/various outdoor activities etc., all in a reasonable amount of time. read more

Great selection (some things they can do better in) but one of their cashiers is horrible. Not a welcome or any acknowledgement when entering the store. Upon check out, seemed like she hated her job or was having a bad day. After paying for my good, she just threw the receipt onto the counter. Did not even hand it to me. Either train your cashiers to be polite or let them go. This ruins a shopping experience. Prices are comparable to other locations...this was my first time and probably won't be back. read more
