What an amazing yarn shop! This local-owned business has everything a fiber lover could wish for - from bulky balls to skinny skeins in every color imaginable. There are adorable crochet, felting, and cross-stitch kits along with a range of hooks and needles in all the sizes. Looking for a handmade gift for that special someone? They have some mittens, scarves, and hats in unique patterns. Owner Bre is so knowledgeable and was able to answer all my questions and provide advice on some of my purchases. Robin was so friendly and happy to discuss different options for crochet hooks. Fiber fairy Susan also custom dyes some of the wool that the shop carries. Collective knowledge, experience, customer service and a variety of product options make this an easy 5/5. Definitely a must for your visit to the area.

Is this store closed permanently? I went by today and it was completely empty.

Just temporary! We will reopen in February with brand new floors.

The locally made yarns are gorgeous, and there is a nice selection of other high quality yarns as well.

I knew it was risky and the timeframe was really short and long story short it ended up being a bad choice - the dress I ordered was awful! With only one week before my wedding I rushed to Davids Bridal to try to find a dress off the rack. Obviously though, going to a bridal shop, non-traditional dresses are hard to come by and the best I could find was a cute ivory tea length, A-line dress. I really wanted something colorful and floral still so I found some floral tulle at JoAnne's and then searched for a local seamstress to see if anyone local could figure out something to do with my boring ivory dress, and in just a matter of days! Oh and the shoulders needed to be taken in as well!! Mandy was quick to respond, invited me to her home-based shop and said she could do it and would have it done by the next day!! It was even better than I expected! Like a whole new dress and fit like a glove!! I felt absolutely beautiful and received countless compliments! I highly recommend Mandy! Not only an excellent designer and seamstress, but also extremely kind and great to work with! Thank you Mandy for saving the day and making me feel so beautiful on my special day!!!!

This is an adorable, somewhat small shop-classroom-studio. There are lots of indy label sewing patterns (like Christine Hayes, Colette, etc), sewing notions, a smattering of scrapbooking items and some lovely locally-handmade pieces. The Makehouse offers fun classes. They offer basic sewing, pattern making, upholstering and specific piece workshops. There's a Kids Club a couple nights a week. They also have drop in sewing times and "sewcials". It seems local fiber artists use the space as a studio...it's an inspiring environment. They were featuring some unique hand embroidered portraits of women by an artist named Annie Nazarian when I stopped by. Unique, interesting. There's a definite Somerset Studio, slightly vintage vibe coursing through The Makehouse that is charming...if staying downtown, it's worth the extra block's jaunt to visit or if local, a few hours to stop for a class. I try to spend a couple weeks at a time every few years in Victoria - and on my next extended stay I intend to take some classes...I can't wait for my next visit!
