However, the customer service we experienced put a damper on the celebration. We brought a group of 14 on a Saturday afternoon and were told we needed to call ahead of time for a group larger than 8. Nowhere on their website or Yelp indicates a reservation is required for a group larger than 8. In fact, their website states walk-ins are welcome, but groups of 20 or more require a reservation. I'd recommend updating your website if the reservation requirements have changed. The guy at the counter pointed at their graveyard of broken kayaks as an excuse despite not even asking whether we wanted to paddle board or kayak. He stepped aside to call the owner about our large group and eventually okayed us to use their rentals. When we told him most of us wanted to paddle board and we needed only 2 tandem kayaks, he admitted he assumed we each wanted single kayaks--which he would have had to bring down to the water. It sounded like he was too lazy to bring single kayaks out for all of us, but we would have gladly helped if he had asked. Lucky for him, the paddle boards and kayaks we needed were already ready by the water for us. He made a big deal out of nothing. We did enjoy our time out on the water and brought back the rentals an hour before close. However, we all were very turned off by the customer service we received and will likely look for a new kayak/paddle board rental place to bring our business to. This experience definitely did not leave a good first impression to our friends who had not been here before.

He was not able to provide any alternative booking as it is a busy Saturday in the summer, and we had to scramble to try and make new plans the day before the planned trip. I would not recommend booking with Cody on any of his boats, unless you are okay with the likelihood of him cancelling the day before and then telling you to rebook with another boat if we still wanted to go, since all of his boats are booked. Terrible experience for the amount of money we paid.

Left harbor around 0800 and went out to San Clemente Island to fish. The day was gorgeous; the sea was calm and there was virtually no wind. We fished for Sheepshead and whitefish and we caught out limit on both species of fish. Much and Easton were super professional and always helpful with whatever was needed (mostly tending to the youngster and fixing broken lines and removing fish off the hooks.). We got back to the harbor at 5pm with bags of filets to take home. Blackfish once again exceeded our expectations for the day. The only downfall is my husband said he was expecting to go in open ocean and that we didn't need to pay extra for a captain if we're just going to stay in the island. Then at the end we also had to tip the captain. Which was fine because he was cool but keep in mind you don't have to pay for it if you're going to be around the cove. To top this all off after my husband left a review they called my husband asking him to change his review and exchange they will give him two hour free yacht ride, so we can go in the open ocean. We tried so many times contacting them, they told us let us know when is a good day. After us letting them know, he told us he will let us know when is a good day for him THIS month. I had told my parents we would take them on a yacht ride, so now I look dumb because it is the end of the month and the guy never got back to me on Instagram, over text we tried contacting them. We have been renting Jet Skis/SeaDoos for years and years. The machines are kept in great shape. The people that work here are awesome, including Sky. Rentals are easy. You book everything on line. Their website also answers just about any question you could possibly have. They are also lenient on time and don't nickel and dime you. The ride through the harbor is nice. You catch a glimpse here and there of dolphins and sea lions. There are always sea lions at the bouey once you get out of the harbor. You can take a loop from the Jetty to the Balboa and Newport Piers and back. This will take aabout an hour If you just cruise. Overall, I am a fan and then some!+

It took couple of visit of learning curve for us to find out a setup that works. It's more challenging to find opportunities to learn surf fishing, so I was thrilled to find Ben, a professional instructor who was a perfect fit for us. I highly recommend following Ben's suggestions for timing and location. His extensive knowledge about the best times and places to fish is something you can't fully appreciate. Although I learned a lot, it was still overwhelming to grasp everything at once. Trust his expertise. We even postponed our first scheduled appointment due to wave conditions, but I'm completely convinced it was worth it. Ben provided detailed information about gear, bait, and setup, and I feel confident in my ability to replicate our fishing success. What truly impressed me was Ben's interaction with my son. He even kneeled down to be at my son's eye level (see one of my photos), a gesture I hadn't thought of myself. It really touched my heart. Thank you, Ben!

New to surf fishing and after attempting to learn on my own by watching videos, reading suggestions…read moreon FB surf fishing groups and skunking for my first 8 attempts at surf fishing, I came across Ben Hervey and American Sea fishing and I booked Ben for a surf fishing lesson. Let me tell You, it was well worth it. Ben's knowledge is immense. He passed on tips from putting on baits, which reels and rods to use, to the ideal water temperatures, tidal movements, wave heights, and identifying structures. After a few hours of instruction, Ben had to leave and to my delight, I was able to catch two surf perch on my own using his instructions. I now feel confident to go on my own and catch fish. I do plan to book another guided tour because one session was not enough to capture all his knowledge.
