I am so excited about this gem of a bed and breakfast. The house itself is absolutely beautiful…read more Approaching the house is a well appointed garden and steps up to a wrap around porch with a lovely gazebo that would be perfect for relaxing with a drink and listening to the birds in warm weather. From the porch, you also get a peek at the Mystic River and the Mystic Seaport. (I could see the Mayflower which was on a lift at the seaport for repairs-absolutely charming.) When you walk through the front door, you are greeted by artwork, books, and a parlor off to the right. There is a baby grand piano, tuned and ready to be played in the parlor. I just loved all the hand painted details by a local artist. It is a cozy, happy room. Walk straight through the front foyer and you enter the dining room which has coffee, teas, and water available 24/7. There was a plate of cookies on the table that were home made and out of this worldA scrabble game was set and ready to go. A well rounded breakfast menu was posted and you can order whatever you like, all home made including the granola. I am gluten free and Josephine was so accommodating. I even discovered a new GF bread that I thought was better than most I have tried. Josephine has a talent in the kitchen to say the least. Everything was delicious. There is a lot of local information on where to go and what to do. OK- now, the Mermaid Room This is not a large room but it has everything you need (including a little fridge) and the hand painted walls are an absolute study. To think one young lady produced all that art, a talent to be admired. There are 3 more rooms upstairs but I wanted to be on the main floor. I found the location perfect. It is not on the main drag so it isn't noisy but just walk a couple of blocks and you are right in the middle of downtown Mystic with all the glorious restaurants, cute shops, and a drawbridge over the Mystic River. 100% charm. See how many mermaids you can count‍. I will definitely go back. I would like to go on a river cruise next time. I am recommending the Mermaid Inn to all my friends and family.

The amenities are top notch, still with a touch of sweet whimsy. The modern, granite bath/shower, in the Blue Room, was complimented by a beautiful mermaid mural. The mantle was decorated with a charming mermaid fresco. The soft shades of blue made for a serene environment & I slept like a baby on the comfy white, wrought-iron bed. Breakfast was delicious! Challah bread French toast with a medly of berries one day, a delicious lobster quiche on another. The Inn is Victorian, the theme is all things mermaid but, the heart of it all is the proprietor & hostess, Ms. Josephine! She could not have been more welcoming & accommodating. Thank you, Josephine, for a restful & rejuvenating stay at your lovely Mermaid Inn!

It's never easy taking over a B&B, and the family that now runs this place seems very nice, and hospitable. That said, at $450 or more per night, execution is requisite for a high Yelp rating. We stayed here four 4-days and 3-nights in the Rosa room. Each room here is somewhat unique (I think there are only 8 rooms here), therefor experiences may be somewhat idiosyncratic to the specific room. Positives: + Hospitable welcome, alerted us by phone when the rooms was ready + Welcome gift (nice touch) + Large room + Gas fireplace which worked well + Comfortable king bed + Pleasant grounds + Separate entrance for this room + Convenient location + Excellent homemade breakfast with seating times to prevent crowding Negatives: - Road noise (on a very busy road, traffic including trucks 100 feet away) - Musty smelling, we couldn't keep windows open at night due to road noise - No sugar, etc. in room for coffee - Bathroom outlets not working - Bathroom door difficult to close - Blinds were broken on one side, and just left standing in the corner of the room, these should have been removed if they could not be repaired - Large piece of plastic left on the window sill, looked dirty there, not well cleaned - Uncomfortable sleep sofa couch for sitting and small TV - Microwave not working (actually it was after we figured out nobody plugged it in) - Outside light over door is on automatic timers, too bright for the light filtering shade, so the room is lit up at night (we prefer a dark room for sleeping) - Rosa backs up to the kitchen, and we could hear a lot of banging and noise at 10pm as they were doing prep work for the next morning The negatives balance out the positives for a 3-star stay. Bottom line, we'd be unlikely to return, especially to that room.

Although surprisingly shabby, the ambiance was nice enough. Sabrina was wonderful. She brought us to our room (The Emerald) with its king size bed, sitting area and large bath. We booked that room as my husband is extremely tall and needs a little more wiggle room in the bed for his legs. Had a king not been available, we would have looked elsewhere. We booked for 3 nights. The room was lovely....except for the dreadful stench of a dead rodent in the wall. No ones fault, but the penetrating odor made it impossible to stay in that room and not feel filthy and/or ill. Sabrina apologized that she had not been in the room for a few days and had no idea of the horrific smell. She did try to have the problem remediated -but to no avail. We were offered a different- very tiny -room (Ruby). It consisted of a smaller bed, no seating, tattered and torn curtains and it was difficult to negotiate getting around the one side of the bed that was passable. Although no ones fault- except for the rat -, we were extremely disappointed as there was nothing luxurious or special about this 2nd room. View was nice though. Sabrina assured us that they would handle the price adjustment over the weekend. In the end, we left a day early. It was our choice and we did not expect any reimbursement for that one night. We merely wanted the difference in price between the the two rooms at the time we booked. It seemed like a very fair request.. The difference in price was $250.00, of course we asked for nothing more, despite out inconvenience. The price was not adjusted by time we left so we called when we returned home. Here is the rub!!!! It was a struggle to have an intelligent conversation - never mind get our rate adjusted to match the quoted rate for that second room. The manager was extremely difficult, snarky and incredibly rude. He was arguing about returning any money to us. I explained that Sabrina said they would reimburse us the difference. After several days, G., the manager came up with an arbitrary $200 reimbursement instead of the full amount. After a further struggle, he said he would see if he could do better. We called several times and he never did do better. In fact after his $200 declaration, he never accepted any of our calls. Twice, I also tried to reach the owner, Ann Law, to see if she could understand the unfairness of the situation. No response from her either. They simply ignored our correspondence. While we were at the Avonlea, Ann was readily available to chat about her newly written book she was promoting during Thanksgiving dinner. $50 won't break our bank, but wow what an unprofessional and unnecessary experience. It would have thought it would not have broken their bank either. From the overall shape of the place maybe it would! Perhaps Ann will use the extra money for some new curtains or some rat traps. If you don't mind a shabby place and you don't run into any problems that need to be fairly addressed, you may like it there. Great views and great location. BTW. - I waited to see if they were ever going to respond or refund before I wrote this review. They chose not to. Hey everyone is nice when things go smoothly. True colors come with adversity. This review couldn't be any closer to the truth . Good luck. Maybe try something different.
