I'm 52 and totally understand the complications and risks with this type of surgery. I felt what could go wrong went wrong. The problem with a lot of people is they do not understand that when something goes wrong, almost all of the time it has nothing to do with the surgeon performing the procedure. Things just happen. Dr. Keem has always been professional and straight forward with me as well as the staff that works around him. I knew the risks and accepted what happened as part of that but Dr. Keem is great. I'd go to him again (this was my second procedure with him...the first being 7 years ago). The staff at the surgery center was amazing. All of them were great compared to my previous visit. I'd like to give a huge shout out to all of those who cared for me but the one that stood out the most was Morgan. She seemed so much of a real person than a robotic nurse that i had experienced with my previous surgery. She was easy to talk to and seemed relatable to my life experiences. Again...all of the nursing staff was amazing this visit but Morgan stands out the most. Thanks again.

My most recent experiences, however, show a complete lack of professionalism. My CT scans from a month ago have not been reviewed, and multiple calls to my surgeon have been ignored. Dr. Basamania has enjoyed a stellar reputation but I think his recent performance is subpar. I have been living with pain and a completely useless left shoulder since his revision surgery nine months ago. I understand that my situation might be complex, but to simply not respond to a patient is unconscionable.

My experience with this provider is less than stellar. I attempted to contact him (his office) numberous times and was ignored. I called, left many messages, I emailed several times. I even called the main clinic and asked what was up with this guy. I was advised to simply keep trying. Sorry I have better things to do and more productive ways to use my time. Eventually he did reply, but all of his apologies amounted to a hill of beans. Excuse me, but I actually require a little more respect than I experienced. MD's should remember this and practice accordingly. I honestly question the authenticity of those reviews. However, this review is real and legit.

I saw Dr. Hormel after injuring my knee. At first, he was incredibly helpful and sent me in for an…read moreMRI. When it appeared that we didn't need surgery, he sent me in for physical therapy. However, after about four weeks, the pain in my knee increased, as did the swelling. When I went in to see him about these issues, he was rude and dismissive of my concerns. He told me to keep going to physical therapy and that there was nothing more he could do. After he left the room, no one from his staff came in to follow up with me, to give me any followup information - anything. I was left alone and ignored. The next day, sores appeared on my leg, and when nurses from my primary care office saw my leg, they sent me in for an ultrasound, where they discovered clotting and sent me in for a CT scan and discovered a pulmonary embolism. Just a few days after Dr. Hormel told me there was nothing he could do, I was in the emergency room. If I had followed his advice, I might be dead right now. I would not recommend Dr. Hormel to any patients. It was one of the worst and disempowering experiences I have had in my life.

I had the bad luck of getting a severe lower back/hip sprain on a weekend, resulting from…read moreunderlying stress silently building up. It was a Saturday, I was new in Bainbridge and did not know where to look. I turned to Yelp and saw positive reviews and called the phone number. By chance, Dr. Petheram was in the office to catch up on paperwork. Luckily for me, he told me to come in to the office and he would have a look. From the first appointment he listened to my concerns, and used a restrained, minimalistic treatment approach. Immediately he worked on loosening up my seized-up, tight, sprain. He has a back stretcher machine that allows the body to be gently mechanically stretched particularly the lumbar (lower) back. He also uses a vibrator to stimulate muscles. He uses a little focussed hammer tool to help with spine alignment. There is very gentle spinal manipulation only as needed. Dr. Petheram is certified in using a laser which greatly reduces inflammation through photo-bio response at the cellular level. Laser was helping me to feel less stiff almost right away. Finally he is certified in "taping" using rock tape. This "tape" technique helps lift the skin over the concerned area, to encourage blood circulation underneath the skin and promotes healing. Within 3 times of going I felt I was really doing much better. Most of all I really appreciated the capable, expert approach, the holistic understanding, and the experienced care I got. You cannot go wrong with Dr. Petheram's expertise. He is a real healer and his kind manner is wonderful. Later on when I had a torn meniscus, I returned to him and he has been supporting my recovery because he would offer solutions for promoting body healing that the orthopedic surgeon simply does not have.

I had felt it was way beyond what a chiropractic visit could do. At times I couldn't lift my arms above my head. He listened and spent time and patience with me to create a plan. I left there with such mental and physical relief and I am into day four of remarkable feelings of recovery. I believe in chiropractors but all others pale in comparison to him. I saw Dr. Downer as a second opinion about groin pain. I had already seen another orthopedic…read moreprovider and had a hip injection, which made things worse. I was already going to PT and not making much progress. An inguinal hernia had already been diagnosed, and once Dr. Downer heard this, he was not interested in evaluating me, but sending me on. He flat out told me I did not have a "hip problem." When I asked him if my pain symptoms went with an inguinal hernia, he said "I don't know, I am a surgeon." Specialists who fix hernias are also surgeons. Dr. Downer had me walk across the exam room as his only "exam." Last I knew, an exam involves touching a patient, which Dr. Downer needs to go back to medical school to learn. I had a recent hip MRI ordered by my PCP, and surprise, I do have a hip problem! Dr. Downer gets good reviews from hip replacements patients, which are big ticket surgeries. He can't be bothered with patients who don't need this procedure. Seem like a coincidence? I bet not.

One of the worst Doctors I've seen and I'm old. I was referred to him from a UW Orthopedic doctor who had seen boney edemas in my MRI's and who provided me Dr. Cannon's name. I waited many weeks to get the appointment with Dr. Cannon. When setting the appointment with him I communicated with his nurse assistant to ensure prior to my visit Dr. Cannon had the scans showing the boney edemas and the scan of my history pathology showing I had mestatic breast cancer in the past. She confirmed the scans had been received prior to the visit. I set the appointment because I have severe bone pain in several locations. On the visit, Dr. Cannon walks into the exam room and asked me what the problem was. I explained to him my history of mestatic breast cancer and a double mestectomy and thyroid cancer to start, he wasn't really interested. I asked if he had read my reports or looked at my scans, he said no they weren't available to him. I expressed his nurse had confirmed my records were in their system, his response was they weren't. I told him I had them with me, both paper reports and CD's, he said he didn't have a way to download the CD's and wasn't interested in the reports. And asked me what I expected him to do. I told him I had several locations of severe bone pain and that boney edema's were showing on my scans. I explained that initially there was one, then more, and now I was having bone pain in my chest bones. He asked what I expected him to do about it and I told him I would like him to biopsy the boney edema in my tibia as it was the one at the time which makes it hard for me to walk. He told me that it woud be considered malpractice for him to biopsy a boney edema. Again I asked for him to look at my scans. He told me I needed to see a general practitioner and there good ones out there who can look general body pains. I told him if I have bone cancer I was going to be very unhappy about his decision to not review my records and that I had been referred to him specifically because he was a oncology orthopedic surgeon. He asked if I was threatening him, I said no, but I would be very mad of his level of care. He stated he didn't know I had been referred but then he tells me (without any review of my records) that it sounds like fibromyalgia to me. I walked out of the exam room with disgust. After the visit, I read his chart notes on my medical record which indicated he and I discussed my muscle pain, he made no mention in the notes that the fact of my visit was bone pain from boney edema's and my request for biopsy to confirm my breast cancer hadn't spread to my bones. It was very disappointing about his level of concern or level of care, I had spent 2 months to see him and then several hours back and forth from my island to Seattle and back just to be rudely treated and disregarded.

It feels weird writing a review on Yelp about a surgeon but here it goes…read more.. Kirby was great, he fixed my shoulder that dislocated all the time. I had the surgery a year ago, and he answered all my questions and re-filled my pain meds with just a call to the office when I needed a re-fill. He made me feel at ease pre-surgery and was very easy to talk to at all my pre and post surgery visits. My shoulder now is back to about 95% range of motion a year later and feels like new! It has not dislocated again which is great. If my other shoulder gets as bad as the one I had the surgery on I will definitely turn to Kirby again to fix it! If you need any surgery for your shoulder Dr. Kirby is the one you need to see!

While it is true that Dr. Kirby is the best shoulder surgeon, I had a little trouble with him in…read morethe exam room. Dr. Kirby was friendly, compassionate, listening and charming until the moment that he decided I was not a candidate for surgery. Like a light switch turning off, his face and body language changed and he could not get out of the exam room fast enough (he was running behind schedule). Many years ago, Dr. Kirby removed a calcium deposit in my rotator cuff. It healed perfectly and I felt like it never happened. Recently I had pain resembling what I felt post surgery years ago. I went back to Dr. Kirby because I was so happy with his previous work. When Dr. Kirby determined that this new problem was not needing surgery, he had no good answers or interest in what the problem might be. To placate me he said, "This will get better on it's own", wrote a prescription for pain then he was out the door. When I protested, he sent a nurse to show me some exercises (He would not have sent her if I was quiet). I still have no idea what is causing my pain. I don't want to go see him again over this because it costs extra to go outside of my insurance coverage plan. I feel like it would annoy him if I showed up again now anyway. Bottom Line: If I really ever NEED shoulder surgery again, I do want Dr. Kirby to do it.

Dr. Hein performed a trapeziectomy on me in March 2022. Everything about the experience was…read moreterrible. He led me to believe it was an easy peasy surgery. Following the surgery I had significant nerve pain along my thumb for 6 months. He tried to gaslight me about my pain. I finally left his practice and wound up with Dr. Miyano at Seattle Hand Surgery. He took an X-ray and discovered I was back to bone on bone arthritis. I swore, after my horrible experience with Dr. Hein that no one would ever come near my wrist with a scalpel again. However, the pain eventually wound up preventing me from getting decent sleep so last week Dr. Miyano performed a trapeziectomy revision. I spent 8 days in a soft cast. He did a much more complex surgery than Dr. Hein with No Nerve Damage! If you are considering a trapeziectomy I woukd think twice about having Dr. Hein do it.
