We decided to share our home with a new cat friend and spent some time looking at websites in the area. The Humane Society seems to do a good job of describing the personality of their animals, posting multiple pics and updating availability. Ours was a 2 day process, I went down on a Saturday and received good service from the staff even though it was busy. There are volunteers that work there that might not be totally up to speed (they're easy to spot) but I don't think that qualifies them as bad help. -Patience- is key when you are looking for a lifelong friend to bring home and the HS is trying their best to match potential owners with the right pet. I was required to fill out a "pre-application" before I could spend some quality time with the candidate cats. It's a no-kill shelter, so there are quite a few adult cats that are cared for onsite that have really cool personalities! Each cat has an info sheet on their cage. After the pre-application you are interviewed by a staff member and asked to acknowledge and agree to some basic care. You also get a coupon for a free vet exam (ours: Aurora Veterinary Hospital, recommended!), coupon for local pet stores, adoption guides as well as all the info they have regarding the animal's history. Tsuki did show symptoms of a UTI when we brought her home but the HS gives you an info sheet stating exactly that as one of the common occurances (taken care of at the exam). She's acclimating great to her new home. Since she's not a kitten the grand total was $25 for a gorgeous cat with an incredibly sweet personality. We feel pretty lucky. read more

But most importantly, my boyfriends dog was needing emergency surgery that's was very expensive and they went above and beyond to find a vet that could do it for a much better price and even called the next day for a follow up. Adopted both of our dogs from Humane society and they're great. The staff their really care about the pets and really informative and helpful about caring for our pets. We got a chance to a do a nice meet and greet with our dog before adopting another and they are very meticulous about doing whatever training/behavioral assessment of dogs before they are even put up for adoption. I went to visit my son in Jan. who lives in Seattle and since I love animals he brought me to this place. I was told that they just did some major renovations inside and outside. When you walk into the building you walk downstairs which feels like the basement... I felt SO BAD for the dogs in there. They're kept in concrete cells ALL ALONE with NO vision to ANYTHING OR ANYBODY unless you walk by and were ALL shivering. Even the prisoners get treated better The air was set to 69 degrees in JAN and the workers were ALL walking around with jackets. SO SAD read more

I nanny 6 and 8 year old sisters. They had never been to Humane Society before, so we dropped in to take a quick visit. This is what they had to say about it... 6: I really liked that I could pet the cats and some of the cats really liked to be petted. The dogs were really noisy. A lot of the dogs were in the outside part of their kennels and we couldn't see them. One of the staff in the cat portable talked to us and she was very friendly and talked to us. The other staff looked really busy. The kitty rooms smelled like cats. My favorite animal was "Newman" the cat, and I hope gets a nice family. 8: I thought it was amazing to see all of the animals there. The dogs were very loud, and they wanted to get out, and were jumping when we walked passed. The babies were sleeping, and a lot of the dogs were outside, so we couldn't see them. Some of the cats didn't like to be petted. The cats were in rooms and not cages, so we could go in and play with them and pet them. I found out later I am a little bit allergic to cats. My favorite animal there was the white chihuahua puppy. In the "furry friend" room I liked the bunny. I saw a chinchilla for the first time, and I didn't know what it was, I thought it was a bunny, but my nanny said it wasn't. I adopted my first kitten from Seattle Humane Society in 2013, and my second just a few months ago. Both times I was impressed with the cleanliness of the shelter and professionalism of the staff. The pre-adoption forms are thorough, and even included a section on how you would trouble shoot common issues (scratching, not using the litter box, etc.). The staff read my form each time with a sharp eye, and asked questions about many of my previous pets. It was clear how much they care about their rescues being placed in the right home. The post adoption packet had everything I needed to make sure my kittens were off to a good start. As expected, all of the medical info and history was included, along with the microchip info. But I was pleasantly surprised to find two items. First, a coupon for a free initial vet exam. And second, a little bio/questionnaire from the kitten's foster family! It was so cool to see what behaviors the foster family noted, especially compared to once my kitten had settled in for a few months. Now I'm the happy owner of two healthy, goofy cats. When i scheduled appointment for neutering my male kitten i didn't receive an email with details about the procedure, i called them about that, they said the email will be sent 3 days prior the surgery. So i waited, but still didn't get the email, tried calling again when 2 and 1 days left, but only got answering machine. When came to pick up my kitten i discovered they shaved and cut his stomach as well, to mark that he was neutered, how crazy! Absolutely unnecessary injury, he is an indoor cat, besides that he has collar with phone number. When I decided to adopt a dog in July, I found Hercules on the Seattle Humane Society's website. He was in one of their foster homes, because he had kennel anxiety. SHS was prompt in all of their communication with me, and they had me come in to answer questions and place a hold on him. I met him and his foster dad two days later, and everything they had told me in person and on their website proved accurate about Hercules (and I so fell in love). We were (and are) a great match. When it came time to settle up, his adoption fees were halved, because they were doing a promotion to help find homes for dogs over three years old. They also provided me with food, toys, and LOTS of information to help me through my first time having a dog. Included in his adoption fee was also a certificate for a free visit with a vet and a 6 week training class. His vet visit was very reassuring (nothing wrong!) and we've loved the training class. If you are looking to adopt, SHS does a wonderful job transitioning their pets from their care to yours. read more

The Humane Society is great. I got my female cat from here a couple of years ago. It's a bit confusing when you're looking online at PetFinder to know if the kitty you're seeking will be at the shelter or is off-site (foster care, adoption fair, etc). Saratoga was not who I came to see, but she is a sweet little cat and I got a TON of great advice & support from the volunteers. This will probably push someone's buttons, but I do have to note that adoptions from the Humane Society are more expensive than adoptions from Seattle Animal Shelter. Fabulous place to get your new cat! They put whatever they know about each cat on clipboard attached to the cages (how old, why the cat is at the shelter [if known, and take anything that sounds over the top with a big grain of salt because some people will say anything to not look evil], and the clipboards tell you traits like "does/n't play well with other cats" or "good or not good with children", "shy", "very affectionate" etc. But the best part is the "get to know you" rooms. You snatch up the resumes of the cats you like and give them to a volunteer. They bring the cats one-by-one to you in a little (very little) room with some toys where can spend time to see how you and the cat mix -- so you can decide if he or she is "your cat". It's first-claim-gets-the-cat, so see them in the order you think you'll like them if you are there when it is busy. I highly recommend getting an ADULT cat. You will be able to see their personalities in the get-to-know-you rooms. I have adopted 2 cats from here and they have both been gems. The turn off is easy to miss if you are going west, so if you think you've missed it turn around, it's a steep turn off, and the sign is easier to see going east on that little stretch of road. read more

Me and my daughter were crying because we got attached to kittens but could not keep them in a household with small children. From my experience today, I can tell that this place could use some work with customer service. We came in at 5:30, knowing the place closed in 30 minutes but wanted to see a few options to bring a furry friend home. The line was packed when we walked in so we decided to browse for a quick 5 minutes, we came back to the desk to find it was already adopted which is no problem, the lady was nice about. She said to go find one real quick, we knew which one we just had to run to grab the name. We came back real quick and the other lady said it was too late, and we made the mistake of not signing in as soon as we came in. The same time I watched her ignore a customer trying to talk about when she could pick up the animal tomorrow at a certain time, to which the lady replied it might be gone tomorrow. The other customer still had a question but looked at us and asked us what we needed. Another lady on the phone in the rudest tone said "uh yea, we close in three minutes"You would think as a humane society you would want to take time with people to give them information on coming back and what not, but this was just rude. I never understood how people can work in an industry like this and not pay attention to how their clients are treated. read more

I really love this place. Three adoptions and no problems at all. The staff has always been very helpful and supportive and the people that actually handle the dogs are very familiar with the individual animals. The only problem I have is if you tell them you are moving, they want you to wait because moving is stressful to the animal. I can understand the concern, but they have no problem moving a dog out to foster care and then moving it again when it is adopted, this seems to be a little contradictory to me. Let me just say that some veterinarians and shelters, the Humane Society included would do well to consider that: 1. Good, loving pet owners don't give up their canine and feline companions for no good reason. Even if the vet can't tell what's wrong after a simple physical exam and a blood test -- pet owners KNOW when their pet's behavior is not normal and when they're suffering. 2. Many good, loving pet owners can't afford to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on tests that may never reveal what's actually wrong with their pet. 3. Pets get mats for reasons other than poor care or inattention by their owners. And lastly, having a support group for people who have lost their pets is a nice thing, but it does not take the place of actively listening to pet owners when their pet is suffering, and showing compassion when you're communicating with a distraught pet owner. (And for whoever was on the phone with Chester's owner, the word is "dementia," not "dismentia." Making that kind of mistake does not inspire the public's confidence in your understanding of animal health.) read more

Where to start....i said i wasn't going to be using the services of Seattle Humane anymore after them lying to me & their staff treating me like a criminal. But i had a emergency on my hands & another time my mom trusted them to get her dog spayed here. PLEASE READ MY PAST REVIEW. Because of letter limits, i can't repeat previous problems. So please read up if you wanna see what they did to give me a bad taste in my mouth. For my emergency, this is going to be a heart breaking story. I had found a neighbors abandoned cat. She was a senior who was malnourished & didn't get along with other cats. Because my household has cats, she was stressing out as i was nursing her back to health. I went online to local shelters/rescues. I was declined from a couple due to space & one saying they wouldn't take her because she didn't get along with cats. So all of them surprisingly referred me to Seattle Humane. I was desperate so i read their surrendering policy & called. First time calling, they were very happy to assist me. They had asked me first off, how old she was & when i found her. I told them. They asked me to describe everything up till this point, including personality. So i did. 15 minute phone call & i thought they were going to say "bring her down" when i was suddenly told "Sorry we can't take her since you've had her for under a month". WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME SOONER? Why did you make me talk about her after asking about when i found her & then proceed to let me talk? Something was up! But she did say she would be acceptable to the shelter. So i asked "Can i try in a few weeks?" She said sure & wished me well. 1 1/2 Months later & i call back. The cat was healthier & so i thought "Now they would surely take her since it's been over a month". I had called them & no one replied to my voice mail. So i emailed them. I had mentioned everything i had talked about with the previous girl but i decided to leave out the fact that i had called previously. It took them 4 days to email me back with a very upsetting response. I was DENIED. The reason they gave was that "She's a senior cat with special needs, she doesn't sound like she's doing well & so the best option would be for her to be put down" & gave me options. WHAT THE H***??? I said she was getting better, i had waited over a month to get her in & i was suddenly told they didn't want her? I knew something was up! Then they referred me to King County Regional Animal Services Shelter & told me i could either have them take her in, they aren't a kill shelter (but they are) & see if they can take on a special needs cat OR get her euthanized there. She had special needs, she wasn't sick with a cold. So being told one thing & then being told another thing...i think the lady on the phone was making things up. Yes some places won't take in stays till after a month of having them. That could of been one excuse to not flat out tell me "Sorry, we don't want her". Looking at their website, i found "Adoptable" Senior special needs cats that were in foster homes. So i knew that they took them. Why else then was i referred to this place by other rescue shelters? Then i realized they didn't want to be responsible for a helpless, old cat that was malnourished & skinny. I was ANGRY! So angry that i was furious & would not stop crying for this poor cat that no one would take & i was trying so badly to help her! She knew it too, that no one wanted her. So i said "Even if she doesn't like cats & is stressed by mine, i'll take care of her". Sadly she passed away in October. I had taken her to the vets a month before & was told she was healthy for being so old & with all of her teeth still there & shiny coat. With blood tests she only had a slightly elevated liver level & were put on thyroid meds but i'll never know why she passed. I loved her so much. How would you feel if once you turned 60, your family kicked you out of your home & were told you were a bother? That's what happened to this kitty! Please love your fur baby till the end. :'( As for my moms spaying experience, her dog got spayed here & all went well till we brought her home & she became sick. So sick that we had to rush her to the vet & were told that someone didn't sterilize their tools correctly, causing my moms dog to have a serious infection that could of killed her. I understand it's a low cost spaying facility but this is Bellevue, this is where people put so much money into this place that can afford it. It's a very well managed vet & shelter. There is no reason to have bad customer service, deny helpless animals for their age or condition & almost kill my moms dog while in the past lying about my adopted animals & their records, denying adoption of their animals, etc. I've donated to this place in the past & recently was pleased to hear a new facility was going up, but now i cannot stress how important it is to do your research when adopting or having procedures. Wish this place was better. So Angry! read more

From my 2 visits to this particular location, I can't help but feel the interrogation of interested and/or curious adopters serve more as an obstacle for finding these animals homes rather than facilitate it. Which should be the ultimate goal. I don't want my review to be influenced by other reviews, but it seems this is not a uncommon perception of this facility. I really wanted to love this experience and pass on to my friends how fantastic it was. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Great organization and they perform miracles for many animals. However, the adoption process was not pleasant. The staff tried to skip over our family when we waited 1.5 hours before opening because someone else whipped out their paperwork first. Luckily we wanted different pets. Then I tried to call and get info on the animal we adopted and they treated me like an idiot for asking. I expressed my frustration with how I was treated and her response was to say "well we are all volunteers here." So I will be going to other rescue centers from now on. Sadly. My name is Janet Brown. On July 25 of this year I adopted a cat from your mobile adoption unit when it was parked on 5th Avenue South in the International District. Eclipse, Animal ID #A22147684, female domestic medium hair, black, was represented as a cat who was "a social eater" who was able to live with another cat. I was asked some questions that were apparently leading ones: What would I do if my cat scratched my furniture or did not use the litter box. I was told by the volunteer, Paul, that Eclipse needed someone who largely stayed at home with her and would encourage her to eat. Since I work at home, this seemed an easy requirement, and since I have owned cats for decades, I was sure eating wouldn't be a problem. Eclipse from the beginning ate her food, my other cat's food, and did her best to eat mine from my plate. She soon put on weight, and also regurgitated undigested food on a daily basis, so I reduced her portion of cat food. Eating was never an issue with her. However aggression has been from the beginning. She was hostile toward my cat and refused to let me touch her for the first two months. I was patient and convinced that this would change. Then she began urinating in the corner of my bathroom. When I moved her litter box to that room, this stopped. Her aggression toward my other cat went unchanged and in a one-bedroom apartment became a problem. Finally my original cat began to avoid her as much as he could. Since Eclipse was beginning to let me pet her, I thought we were on an upswing and that in time she and my original cat would find a form of co-existence. Last week I had cataract surgery which had me away from home between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. I came home to find cat feces in the hallway. This has happened once or twice a day for the past week and I discovered Eclipse was the defecator. I cleaned the areas thoroughly and hoped she would stop being upset. Last night at 2 p.m. I was awakened by her urinating on my bed. Before I was fully awake I kicked several times. Now Eclipse is under my bed and comes out only to eat. When I examined her medical history that was sent home with her papers, I was horrified by the drugs she had been given and the extreme aggression she displayed when in your care. She apparently was happy in foster care where she was the only cat. Given her aggression, she should have had the disclaimer that I saw on other cages in the adoption unit the day I took her home--that she should not be in a home with another cat. In my contract it says that for you to reclaim Eclipse, I need to pay a fee of 200 dollars. For that reason, and because of the drugs she was given for several months under your care, I will not return her to you. I will try my best to get past this horrible experience that both Eclipse, my original cat, and I have had in the past four months. But I want you to know that I will let other people be aware of my experience on social media and will actively discourage anyone I know from adopting an animal from you. Eclipse is the fourth cat I've adopted in my life; the other three were beloved pets. She is a nightmare. read more

You have to be "first in the parking lot " in order to get the puppy , not just first in line at the door and first inside ...... I left that place in tears I was first ... Still didn't get the dog .. INSTEAD. They gave the dog to some old rich guy that pulled up in a 60k vehicle that said hes gone 8+ hours a day!!! The poor puppy that's 4 months old has to sit in its filth :( I'm home all the time my husband just worked 3 straight days no sleep to go drive to this place .. I was on the hunt for a puppy and I ventured to the humane society in Bellevue to see what they had. I am a HUGE cat lover so my friend and I went into each room to play with them. We then looked at the doggies and I eventually asked to play with one. After my interaction with the dog I spoke with one of the volunteers. It seemed that the volunteer sort of assumed that anyone walking through their doors to adopt are going to be bad owners. When I told them my kitty lives at my moms house cause she's lonely and needed a pet she had the nerve to say "how many other pets have you abandoned?" Oh I'm sorry that I found a wonderful home for my kitty where he gets spoiled on a daily basis (and I see him once a week) and for me to try to adopt a puppy and give it a loving home. What an awful person I must be. Never going there again. read more

Rating changed because the CEO offered to cover our adoption fee after this ordeal ($120), but we apparently "misunderstood" their policy. Apparently, if she were sick, we could've returned her, they would have cared for her, and we could have adopted her back. This was never clearly explained. Seeing all the reviews about how many complications people have had just getting a straight answer about whether or not they'll actually get the animal they put a hold on, I wouldn't trust them with a pet rock. We (luckily) signed up for pet insurance just in time, and we can get most of our $1,200 dollars in vet bills back. Our kitten just finished her antibiotics, but is still a bit sneeze-y. It was very scary to nearly lose her. read more

I'm a huge advocate for shelters and adopting animals, but my experience with the Seattle Humane Society was only stressful and miserable. I adopted a cat from their traveling van with the assurance that she had a clean bill of health having been de-wormed, given flea treatments and isolated for upper respiratory syndrome showing on her charts. I was entirely misinformed because not two days later she threw up a tapeworm, only to have fleas appear the next day and finally I received a letter two weeks later stating she had tested positive for Feline Leukemia Virus, and that upon her second test has been determined "discordant", meaning it was probably clearing out of her system. None of her costs were covered by the free health insurance I received with the adoption, and moreover I had to double those costs to make sure my other cat hadn't been exposed to all of her illnesses. The shelter put my first cat in danger of getting tapeworm, fleas and most importantly Feline Leukemia Virus. Had I known of her existing conditions I never would have gone through with the adoption. I ended up having to spend $500 plus of my own money, which I didn't have, making up for the shelter's irresponsibility. They refused to take responsibility in the form of helping with my bills in any way other than refunding the $25 adoption fee. I was in touch with the director who excused their false bill of health by telling me that they do deworm, just not for tapeworms and that they didn't give her the next round of flea treatment because they didn't detect any on her, when she did in fact have them. They legally could not compensate me because I took my cat to an outside vet, another piece of information that was never told to me, in fact the complete opposite, I was given vet recommendations by their volunteer. They blamed the misinformation on the fact they work with volunteers who gave me a false bill of health due to poor training instead of taking responsibility for giving me a very sick cat. If you plan on adopting from this shelter, get all of your facts from them straight before you end up in a stressful situation like I have. Make sure you vet your animals medical records and are able to access their in-house vet should anything occur. Overall, a very unhappy and stressful experience that could have been entirely avoided had they been responsible enough to give me the correct health history of my cat. I entirely encourage the adoption of pets, though I would suggest going to a kill shelter before this one for the sake of shelter animals and the fact that SHS does not adopt out their animals with accurate health status. read more

The lady that "helped" us fill out the application and matching us up with a dog was the worst. We didn't go there to be belittled and picked apart. I really did not want to wright this but I know it is important. My husband and I adopted a dog from the seattle humane society, there was no information on him and no warnings about behavior. After getting him home we found out that he was extremely food aggressive and randomly tries to bite people. we have tried for two years to change both behaviors with no success and are now facing the fact that we need to find him a different home. Went to the Humane Society to look at dogs. It was very busy, the staff was doing it's best to keep everything organized. As somebody who has worked with animals and people a lot in the past I was understanding and appreciative of what some might call an "interrogation", i.e. meeting with a knowledgable adoption advisor. After waiting for an hour and a half I met the dog I was interested in. Staff gave me plenty of time to meet with the dog and was honest about her history, health and behavioral problems. This is an animal shelter not a pet store I appreciate honest staff who don't sugar coat things. I am seriously considering adopting the dog and if not this one, I will definitely be back to look at others. I did not find the staff condescending at all as some here suggest, although I didn't meet everyone. In my experience with animals, people who are knowledgable and can tell if somebody else is or not. Do your own research and reading if you don't want other people explaining things to you. read more

Just off the 90 north of Factoria mall, the Humane Society offers more than just animals for adoption. They also have a boarding area with a la carte grooming choices and dog training classes. Your pet doesn't like the new food you're trying out?? That's ok - drop it off as the center is always in need of food donations. Our animals are from there and we couldn't be happier. My only complaints is that the check-in office is extremely small and I did have some concerns during the healing process and they were a bit difficult to get ahold of. this place is an ok shelter. it's a good place to adopt a dog because they do behavior testing of every dog before adoption, so adopters can get an idea of which ones do well with other dogs, cats and children. they treat the cats fairly well, but they keep too many of them in cages for far too long and don't rotate them through the free-roaming rooms enough, nor give them cage breaks through foster homes. i also find that they have a ton of overcrowding because they are so focused on making their numbers look good (# of animals in and # of animals out), that many of the animals suffer for it by being in cages for too long and inadequate socialization. since this is a strictly donor-funded shelter and not a municipal one (except for the city of renton, which uses this is its shelter), there is no reason for overcrowding - it's simply greed. on top of that, they have a tendency to euthanize healthy, adoptable animals out of hysterics. when a dog tested positive for parvo, they euthanized all of the pit pulls (including puppies) in the dog dorm rather than test them and treat them if needed. parvo is very treatable if caught early enough, but since pit bulls are highly susceptible to it and harder to adopt out due to the shelter's own imposed adoption criteria, they just killed them all. that makes it really hard for me to support this shelter when there are so many rescues around that treat animals much better. read more

I adopted my cat, Aslan (formerly known as Cappy) from here back in February of 2012. The staff was super nice and helpful! We didn't have to wait long to adopt him since it was a week day. They let us know of his medical background and there weren't any "surprises" that other people got when they took their pets home. Everything was in the paperwork. The description of him was so on point! He really does greet us at the door when we come home! And he's super cuddly and sweet! He's a wonderful therapy cat and I will definitely adopt another pet in the future! I'm also a new volunteer there and get to work with such precious, sweet dogs! It's a great environment to be in!
