Shout out to ClassPass for helping me discover Jason from MCW Health and Fitness! MCW was one of…read morethe first classes I've tried, and the best thing I have ever found through CP. I started attending a Functional Conditioning class at the end of May. This class begins with a warm up using an agility ladder, followed by circuit training. There are several stations to work through such as TRX, kettlebells, bags and resistance bands to name a few. The last part of class is cardio focused, which can involve jump ropes, burpees or running up and down the stairs. I always feel that I get a great workout at the end of every class. In fact, I enjoy his classes so much that I even signed up for bi monthly personal training sessions with Jason two months later. I definitely get more out of the PT sessions, since we can focus on my goals and try other routines such as weight training. I especially enjoy getting time in at the squat rack and bench press during our PT sessions. What I like about Jason is that he does take the time to get to know his clients, and figures out how to motivate and push you towards your fitness goals. There have been times where I wanted to half-ass the workout but Jason would push me to prove myself wrong. If you are dealing with an injury, he is more than happy to show you a modified version. It's crazy to see how much progress I have made through the group classes and personal training sessions over the past 7 months. Thanks to Jason, I have dropped 15 lbs, reduced my body fat by 1.5%, improved my posture and I'm getting stronger after every session. Whether if you're not sure how to get back into shape or if you have specific fitness goals, I highly recommend MCW fitness. You can't go wrong with Jason's Functional Conditioning classes or his personal training sessions!

I've never been a "gym guy". I grew up thinking I was too small to be athletic until I rediscovered…read moresports as a young adult. So when I say, "I love this gym", know that it's not coming from somejock who loved working out...and I do love this gym. I had been searching for a form of exercise to replace the activity and community of a team sport after I suffered a ruptured Achilles. I found GLSC through a free trial and had no idea it was going to change the way I thought and felt about fitness. GLSC workouts were the highlight of my week, and over the course of a year, I saw my skills, strength, and enjoyment improved significantly. Here's why I love Green Lake Strength and conditioning: 1) The coaches: Shout out to Coaches Hannah, Zeyab, and Jonathan, who were my first and primary coaches. They are the perfect balance between motivating and moderating, helping you gauge your skill/strength limits and safely push them. They are excellent at teaching form and technique, and they brought my high-school-level understanding of weightlifting up to par. Despite having an injured Achilles shoulder, their guidance helped ensure that I never injured myself (and in fact reduced my pain through strengthening and increasing range of motion) even while greatly increasing my strength and endurance. They can help you improve whether you're a beginner or an expert. 2) The community: GLSC has a vibrant community. Members get to know each other but not in an in-your-face sort of way - you can be a casual weekly member or you can join your fellow members on unofficial hikes and official BBQs and gatherings. There's a very wide range of ages and experiences in these classes, and they didn't make me feel "dumb" or out of place. Classes have been kept to 12 people max, which after experiencing much smaller and larger classes, 12 is a great number - not too crowded but not awkwardly empty. You also get to know each other through the infamous question of the day - just lean into it, it'll be fun, I promise. ;) 3) Facilities/programming: After trying several other gyms, I can confidently say that none of them quite match up to GLSC's programming. GLSC excels because of the three distinct segments of their strenght & conditioning workouts: Warm-ups, skill/strength-building, and WOD. The warm-ups aren't just stretching and jumping jacks - they are specifically design to engage the muscle groups that you'll be using, they help reinforce the techniques needed to complete the rest of the workout of the day, and they get your heart pumping. Other gyms I've experienced rush this part or do the bare minimum. The skill/strength segment is where I learned the most over the last year because they remove the speed element and focus on quality over quantity. Again, the other gyms I've experienced rush this part and either skip teaching altogether or push you into a higher pace too soon. They also offer a wide range of modifications and equipment to meet each person's level of skill and strength. The WODs vary between low, medium, and high metabolic conditioning and are varied in type and style so you're never bored. There's no "leg day" or "arm day" - your entire body will be exhausted every day. They oddly fill you with both a sense of dread and excitement, knowing how hard they will be but also how good you'll feel afterwards. And for what it's worth, the coaches have generally good tastes in music - good balance between pumping you up but not obnoxious techno. A note about cost: It's expensive. But I look at value for cost, not low cost. The quality of the coaching and programming alone is easily worth it in my eyes. Add to that a clean, high-quality facility, fun community, and personal results and I was happy to pay the higher cost. I loved this gym...but sadly had to give up my membership when my workplace moved away. I'm still searching for a new gym, forever comparing it to GLSC and still not finding its equal. Congrats, Nate and team, for building this wonderful gym and community! Hit me up if you want to expand to S. Seattle!

Greenlake Bootcamp offers month long outdoor physical training courses. I took the course in…read moreNovember (meeting 1 hr, three times a week). The course is taught by two trainers, Jesse and Breanne. Both appeared to be very fit and in their mid-thirties. To provide some background, I am generally a fit person--hwp with a normal BMI. I run and do yoga frequently. But after a bout of couch potato lifestyle brought on by grad school depression I decided to take this course to get me back on track. Pros: 1) Very rigorous exercise routine: The classes are basically interval training and rigorous right away. You are tested on the first day for how many reps of burpies, squats, pushups and sit ups you can do and also running time is recorded. After this class ramps up fairly quickly. 2) Positive reinforcement: The trainers push you but are also very encouraging and positive. I liked that a lot. 3) Nutritional Advice from community: The class also includes an online component where other members post what they are eating. This was an interesting experience and also gave me pointers on what brands to shop for that are less processed. 3) Results: I lost 5 pounds. My legs and glutes were stronger. I also lowered my resting bpm. I was happy with these results. Cons: 1) Outdoor only classes: This was possibly the biggest deterrent for me. The classes can ONLY be held outdoors. If the weather gets really shitty there is no indoor option. Eventually by the end of the course I fell sick from running in the cold at 7AM three times a week. 2) Photos posted on social media without permission and spamming: The first day of class students are asked to add both the trainers on fb so you can be connected to a community and get nutritional advice. This was helpful but what I did not expect was that they would take pictures of us during exercise routines and post them on their fb page. I did not sign any release forms to permit this! Additionally the fb community was a tad too active. It is not curated AT ALL so I would receive 10+ notifications a day. Sometimes just inane comments. This got irksome very quickly. 3) Dubious nutritional advice: The trainers asked us to remove dairy, gluten and sugar from our diet completely. Being a scientist I am skeptical of any advice that is not accompanied with whether research has been done on the subject. I would have liked to know more scientific background of why they were recommending this diet. I am sure you would lose weight with an extremely restrictive diet but thats not a good long term plan. I am more in the camp of eating everything in moderation. 4) Unclear advice on footwear: When I started the class, one of the trainers commented several times on the minimal running shoes I was wearing (Merrell brand). I have worn minimal shoes and ran in them for a while with no issues. The comments were always somewhat negative but unclear. Finally I asked him what his opinion was on my shoes and if he recommends them. The response was again, unclear. He said something on the lines of "they are not for me". I found these interactions awkward and confusing. If you don't have expert advice to give then why comment on them in the first place.

Plus, I've been getting my muscles back. So exciting! This is such a great fitness program, and the instructors and participants make it easy to be there at 6 a.m., in the cold, dark Seattle fall. Across the board, everyone is incredibly friendly and inclusive. It's not a bunch of brides trying to look good for their big day (which is great! this would be your ticket!); it's mostly fit moms who are committed to long-term health and fitness. I feel closer to my community, which is a hugely unexpected and positive consequence. I've been going 3 days a week at 6 a.m. at the Phinney Neighborhood Center parking lot, and some Saturdays at 8 a.m. at Golden Gardens. And, really, this is good for any fitness level. I could barely keep up the first week, and I've come a long way in the past month. Each workout is different and challenging, and the hour flies by.
