The park land was donated by Mather and he also contributed heavily to the arch construction. It is a tribute to the peace and friendship between Canada and the United States, and as a grand gateway to Canada. The park also includes a cenotaph dedicated to veterans from Fort Erie who died in World War I, World War II and the Korean War, sits to the east of the arch, facing the Niagara River. Its not necessarily a destination on its own, but if you are in the village of Hamburg its a nice place to walk through.

I had originally planned on just doing a quick lunch walk to do some bird watching but when I got there I quickly realized I'd be there longer than expected because there were so many rarer birds I had never seen and the place was so beautiful! The trail along the gorge rim was really gorgeous. Pun intended Some of the other trails inside of the woods were pretty muddy and a bit hard to follow because of the leaves, but using the alltrails app helped a lot. All of the trials were well marked too, which I really appreciated. It does seem like this place needs a bit more upkeep, but for the most part it's a really great park to walk at and it's dog friendly. All of the trails are pretty moderate and not too strenuous.

The Margery Gallogly Nature Sanctuary is 145 acres of private forest that, instead of being…read moredeveloped, has been acquired by the Western New York Land Conservancy and is now open to the public. There is a loop trail and a spur, which together added to a little more than 1.5 miles long. Some of the trail is on a raised boardwalk because the area can be wet and the trail is not open to dogs. Signage does say that snowshoes and cross-country skiing are permitted. The forest is lovely, especially now with the autumn colors taking over. Although it was dry when I visited, a nice big frog greeted me along the path and reminded me that the area is a wetland area. There were a few families with young children visiting. Other than negotiating the boardwalk, it is an nice easy hike for kids. The nature sanctuary is easy to reach. The trailhead is in the back corner of Assumption Cemetery and there is a small parking lot for visitors.

The park was vibrant and full of visitors. I was impressed with the overall cleanliness of the park, as well as clear signage and displays for all the attractions. The highlight to me was the new visitor center. I believe the last time I tried the visitor center was 2019 and upgrades have been made. It's so modernized and attractive. Many clean bathrooms to use, lots of interactive displays, a cafe, and gift shop. You can tell a lot of money went into improving this place. I also liked that there were so many public restrooms available throughout the park and seating options including picnic tables and benches. We also saw lovely hanging baskets throughout the park. Everything looked so good and well maintained. A great park for a day trip. Make sure to check out the maid of the mist at least once!

It's hard to imagine that people once attempted to go over the Falls in a barrel, or so the stories say! The Maid of the Mist takes you right to the base of the Falls and it is AWESOME... and WET! Don't let those little ponchos fool you. You are going to get soaked, and the roar of the water is incredible. The Visitor Center inside the park isn't nearly as impressive as the Discovery Center Welcome Center, but it offers clean restrooms, a refreshment stand, and an information desk. There are also plenty of fantastic photo opportunities throughout the park and along the viewing areas. The nightly fireworks display is spectacular, though it does get crowded. For wheelchair users, there is a fabulous, spacious ramp that provides easy access down to the viewing level. Quaint and quiet, although I didn't do it, plenty watch the nightly fireworks from here. A simple yet understated escape. Mostly open, so it's not exactly a secluded place; nonetheless, it still offers some solitude. Worth passing through on your way to and from Table Rock and/or the Tunnel, or even if you're just walking about in Niagara Falls.
